Category:Programming languages

Hi, I was wondering why you removed 'Category:Programming languages' from all lists of programming languages? Yet you left 'Category:Esoteric programming languages' in the List of esoteric programming languages article. Was that by mistake?-) ZeroOne 12:42, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi,ZeroOne. I decided not to touch the subcategories, since by their own nature, they give rise to lists of programming languages (say, the LISP subcategory -> list of Lisp-related prog langs, and so on). Perhaps we should make an attempt to standardize on the subcategory naming convention, though. The other possible way to use the Category/subcategory hierarchy would be to use the subcategories to actually hold the links to their languages, rather than the Prog Lang category; but this approach has many disadvantages IMO: languages could end up in both the category and subcategory, and there would be no equivalent to the current de facto alphabetical list produced by the category (in fact, if we stick to a consistent interpretation of the category elements, we don't need the List of Prog Langs in Alphabetical Order article any more). Furthermore, if a consensus is reached on how to use the subcategories, we might end up not needing the List of Categorical prog langs article either. One more thing... I did remove HQ9plus as a programming language, but left it as an esoteric one, on the grounds that since it is easier to come up with a valid new esoteric language than with a full-blown language entry, eventually we would end up with a Prog Langs category with an overwhelming majority of esoteric mini-langs over the real langs. I think the main reason that we need lists of programming languages is because an article does not exist for each and every language yet. Thus the categories can't create automatic lists that would be complete. Neither can categories organize the languages in a chronological order etc. The problem of languages falling under their specific category and/or the main category is real, though. How would it be decided what languages should have their own sub categories? Etc etc... Maybe we could even setup a new Wikiproject in order to get some standards on programming languages and also get new articles written about as many new languages as possible. NOTOC

Sorry, ZeroOne. It was me: I was experimenting with the effects of not using a TOC on certain, rather short, articles and I forgot to remove it. Do you have an opinion or any thoughts on the matter? — danakil 20:27, Sep 4, 2004 (UTC)

The article wasn't that sort as it did have four headers. I think a table of contents gives articles certain credibility, not to mention usability: with a small resolution (like 1024x768 or less) you don't necessarily see anything but the first header, if the chapters are long. Using the TOC you can quickly get to the chapter that's interesting and also see if there actually is anything interesting in the article without scrolling the screen. Also if more headers are added in the future the TOC becomes more important but people might forget to remove the NOTOC message. I can't really think any other use for NOTOC but alphabetic lists and such for which nice, short template TOCs exist. --ZeroOne 20:36, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Civ series template

Hi, I wonder about the construction of the Civilization template... the 'other' category is what concerns me. I wonder if it could include other related games, and how related they would be. For example, Colonization. ? Krupo 17:16, Oct 24, 2004 (UTC)

Makes sense, but that definition can easily get misinterpreted. For example, Galactic Civilizations has the word, although it's obviously quite different. Similarly, Freeciv would then require addition, eh? On the other hand, the original Civilization article mentions Colonization, drawing it closer into the series' orbit... The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

Template:Chess position

Thanks for putting the board coordinates in the template. I had wondered if that could be done, and you just did it.

I wonder if we should have a second template that doesn't include the coords. If you look at Slav Defense, there's a large main diagram that looks great with the coordinates and many smaller diagrams that I think looked better packed tighter without coordinates.

No problem. I actually wondered why no one had done it before. I think more templates would just make it confusing. People would use the no coords template with the main diagram and coords version with smaller diagrams anyway. But one thing I was thinking was to create a second template where there would be space for commentary under the board. It would just be a simple table where in the upper row you'd have the board and in the lower one the text. Actually it could be done with the existing template by adding another parameter at the end! Leaving it empty, as it would be by default and as it now is, would only create an invisible row. How about that? --ZeroOne 10:12, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

If you can put in a optional caption parameter, it would be nice. Right now to put a caption under a diagram I think you have to put the chess position table inside another table. At least that's what I did in Slav Defense.

On another note, I tried the Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial#Photo_gallery suggestion of simply placing the chess positions one after the other and floating them all to the left follwed by clearing the left float at the end, but it didn't work well. The end result was a kind of a stair-step down as each position to the right started one line lower than the one to the left. Do you know any way to make that work? The advantages are that it's simpler and the positions would wrap to the width of the screen rather than forcing a fixed 3x2 setup as I used in Slav Defense. --Quale 17:24, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I suppose you mean the edit I made in Tiger (disambiguation). My justification was that the page is so long that one cannot see the message rightaway. Most disambiguation pages are much smaller, there the message can be at the bottom of the page. --ZeroOne 14:36, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

As you probably know already, the template you created ({{esolangs}}) has been nominated for deletion at WP:TFD. I've voted keep there, but I'd like to know why you chose those languages. The nominator said that the 8 languages were arbitrarily chosen. I highly doubt this, and I'd appreciate it if you could just leave a quick explanation about why those specific languages were chosen. I presume they are the most popular/famous ones?

No, I failed to notice that! Thanks. They are mostly the canonical examples of esoteric programming languages. Befunge and Brainfuck are the types of languages to which other languages are compared to and referred to as Brainfuck-variants of Befunge-variants, etc. INTERCAL is the oldest known esoteric programming language. Hitchhiker Templates

You seem to have done a bit more editing with these than I have... JW1805 just improved the look of the {{HitchhikerMiscellanea}} template greatly, only now that "Books" is towards the top, rather than being in the bottom line, as in the other four Hitchhiker templates ({{HitchhikerBooks}}, {{HitchhikerRaces}}, {{HitchhikerCharacters}} and {{HitchhikerPlaces}}) it no longer looks uniform. Go tiles

Hi ZeroOne. I notice you just uploaded a bunch of Go tiles. I guess it's too late to avoid duplicating effort, but the Commons already has a set of Go tiles. They're used at Rules of Go, via Template:Go board 5x5. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 21:05, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I was actually updating the go-images to get my sudoku-template at User:ZeroOne/Sandbox look nicer. :) I admit I thought I'd do a favor for the go-people too by updating them. It looks like the Go tiles you improved are only used at Hasami shogi. Not that I'm objective about it, but I think my Go tiles are better: the stones are realistically 3-dimensional. Also, as with real Go boards, a stone takes up its entire square; meaning you don't need nearly as many tiles.

Automatic Google Earth placemark

Hi, you created the automatic Google Earth placemark script for the http://kvaleberg.com/wiki/index.php/Wiki:Map_sources page, right? It doesn't quite work for me. For instance, when I click on 13°43′42″N 100°32′00″E and then choose Google Earth from the Map sources page, it downloads the customplacemark.kml file and opens it with Google Earth. But Google Earth simply shows the standard globe centered on the U.S., it doesn't move to the specified location (which is in Thailand). Do I have to check or uncheck anything in Google Earth? (Using Google Earth 3.0.0616 beta.) Thanks, AxelBoldt 19:25, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

If I save the customplacemark.kml file to disk, then open GE, and then open the .kml file from within GE (File|Open), everything works correctly (located in Temporary Places, and visited immediately). If I close GE again, and double-click on the .kml file, it works correctly as well. If I let GE open the downloaded .kml file directly without first saving it to disk, it doesn't show up in Temporary Places and is not visited. This is on Firefox 1.5. I just clicked on the placemark link on this page, firefix asked me whether to open the file with GE, I said yes, then GE opened and moved right away to the location in Serbia. Everything seemed ok. Do the placemarks from your script have the exact same format? Maybe they lack a title? AxelBoldt 21:06, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

I can't find any .kml files online anywhere, everyone seems to be using .kmz. Anyway, I just tried this again, and there's still nothing in Temporary Places after GE starts. AxelBoldt 22:23, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Please check the article. It's an alternative system (Wikipedia:Proposed deletion) which does not require votes so long as no one opposes the deletion. If you object to the deletion, simply remove the prod notice and preferably explain why in your edit summary or on the talk page. If someone still wants the article gone, then it moves to AfD. BDAMD and Argh! have now been proposed for deletion as well. I have a feeling that someone is actually going thru the category and prodding anything they haven't heard of...If you're concerned about this somewhat arbitrary process, you might http://tools.wikimedia.de/~interiot/cgi-bin/queries/en_proposed_deletion to see if there's any others up for deletion that you think ought to be saved, becase I know nothing about programming languages. Compact TOC

I've reverted your changes to the {{CompactTOC}} template, as it caused some pages that use it to break. If you want a compact TOC with that formatting use the already existing {{CompactTOC3}}. How did it cause the pages to break? I take it CompactTOC3 does not break anything, then? Looking at that list of TOCs, why do we even have CompactTOC, CompactTOC2 and CompactTOC3 as they are essentially all the same? --ZeroOne 19:20, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

There are some pages that use {{CompactTOC}} with other sections added on the end, which the formated version doesn't allow. Pages that use version 3 don't have this, so it doesn't break them. The reason that there are so many different templates is that they are all differently formatted - different pages have different requirements, so there are lots of ones to allow the right one to be used. There is a proposed template to replace all of them linked from Wikipedia talk:Template messages/Compact table of contents, but I don't understand how that works (and its only been there a couple of days iirc). List of mathematics articles (0-9)

That page is maintained by a bot, and while it is writable by people, the bot expects a certain format. Your changes to that page have been overwritten by the bot, and actually, I don't think it is a good idea to use templates in that page, it is a huge slow page anyway, and using templates for each of the 310 links would be a server strain I think.

Good point, thanks for the attempt. The sad thing is that nobody really reads those lists, and rather seldom writes to them. (OK, not really. :) The only purpose of those pages is to list the math articles to make sure we know where they are and how many they are, and I don't think they are much used otherwise.

Calculator images

Hi, ZeroOne. I noticed all of the images you've uploaded; they look great! I do have a question/concern, though, regarding the 2 calculator images (Image:TI-86.jpg and Image:TI-84 Plus.jpg). Both of these images contain the text, "Hello Wikipedia!" I'm concerned that these images constitute self-references which are to be avoided. Could you take a look at WP:ASR and see if you concur? Orphaned chess images

The {{orfud}} template is for orphaned images where "fair use" is claimed. Such images get deleted because we can't claim fair use when the image isn't actually being used. But "fair use" doesn't apply to public domain images, because any use is OK. I see no reason to delete public domain images from Wikipedia just because they are orphaned. The image description contains information that is not in the chess diagram template image which replaced it. Some other similar chess diagrams had actual solutions to the problems in their image descriptions, although Image:Loshinsky L'Italia Scacchistica 1930 Grimshaw.png in particular does not. Thanks for uploading Image:MetalGearSolid2-Substance screenshot1.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Fair use in userspace

Hi, I'm writing you to let you know that fair use images cannot be displayed in userspace for legal reasons. I've edited your image gallery so as not to display some images that I know are fair use -- if you could get the rest, that would be great. --Improv 15:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Portal:Chess/News

I'll not revert your addition of the dates, but I may post a query apropos of the issue at Portal talk:Chess/News, inasmuch as there are a few compelling reasons for our exclusion of such dates and in view of the common practice of our commenting out (cf., wholly omitting, lest one should not be able properly to manage the sections) dates in news sections (see, e.g., Template:In the news [part of the main page], Portal:Law/Law news, Portal:American football/News, Portal:Basketball/News, Portal:Golf/News, Portal:Television/Television News); toward the contrary proposition, though, one might adduce Portal:Food/Food news, Portal:Swimming/Swimming news, Portal:Association football/News, and, I suppose, Portal:Music/Music news splits the difference, including, for each event, the month but not the specific date. To be sure, I think the inclusion of dates to be altogether unseemly, but it's plain there's no consensus (even amongst those portals that are sports and games-related), so perhaps a meta-discussion is in order; at the very least, it's probably something that ought to be discussed at the news talk page, although I suspect that no one—save us—will happen by to contribute. I reverted a few of your link excisions—most of which I think were properly made—and left an explanation at the talk page.
