ROC vs Taiwan

May I know which article you are referring to? Legally, there is no such country as 'Taiwan', only the 'Republic of China'. There is a 'Taiwan Province' and 'Taiwan island', but they are only a subset of all the territories administered by the Republic of China. en:wp is a bit ambiguous - it starts the Taiwan page with "Taiwan ... is a state in East Asia.", though it does then say "the Republic of China now governs the island of Taiwan".

While you're educating me, where does "Formosa" fit into the hierarchy? Is it a synonym for (island of) Taiwan, or are Taiwan and Formosa different things?

However, if you feel that the unofficial name should be used for the sake of clarity, please go ahead - Well, before I read your explanation I thought that, but now I'm not sure what the best way to handle it is!

The Republic of China is a country established in 1912 on the Chinese Mainland, but which only retains control of the province of Taiwan and part of the province of Fukien after the Chinese Civil War. The Taiping Islands were ceded to the Republic of China while it still governed China in its entirety, and these Islands are geographically and legally a part of China, and not the island of Taiwan. More precisely, the Islands in question are in the Republic of China, but not in the 'Taiwan' part of the Republic of China.

Formosa is a name given to Taiwan by the Portugese when Taiwan was a colony of that country, and is nowadays never used in an official context. It can be viewed as an alternative name of the island. It should not be used to refer to the Republic of China.

Hello, I understand that the government on Taiwan is officialy called the Republic of China. But in English, Taiwan is the common name used. The official name is unpopular and might be confusing for people not familiar with cross-strait relations. In wikipedia articles, we often use common names instead of official names. For example, we use Greece instead of Hellenic Republic. I apologize for reverting as vandalism, I was being lazy and pressing that button is quicker.Uaat (talk) 02:51, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for clarification on your part. I had concerns about using the common name of Taiwan, as the Republic of China still administers territories that are not part of Taiwan. I thought logically this meant that one could not equate Taiwan with the Republic of China. As I am from Taiwan myself, I understand some people may have concerns about using the name 'Republic of China'. I agree with you that the common name should be used, but only in the premise that it would be less confusing for some English speakers outside of Taiwan. Dömötör tower

Hi Z10987,

I read your message concerning my first article in Wikipedia. I think I'd need some help. On my home citi's page I found some yet unintroduced sights. I had the idea, to write about those. My question will be as I understand your point: how can i put this article to that sight, Dömötör tower?

@Kiskotek: Thanks for asking for help. I think you should begin improving your article by saying where the Dömötör tower is. From your post, I understand it is in Szeged, Germany. Put it in! Say something in the first paragraph like Dömötör tower is an attraction and historic place in Szeged, Germany. You can also add in other information such as when the tower was built.

One more thing. After every post on a Talk page, sign off your comment with a Z10987 (talk) 23:03, 9 June 2014 (UTC). It will automatically put in your username and put the time and date there, so you don't have to type it all in yourself :)

It's great to see new contributors in Wikipedia. If English isn't your first language and you aren't that good in English, you can go to the Simple English Wikipedia at simple.wikipedia.org to create the article there first. People there are more accommodating and will make much more effort to correct typographical errors and grammatical errors. Someone like can help to port it over to this one after you're done.

Hi, this "article" was a user page that, together with its talk page, had been moved to article space by a vandal. Before tagging an article with CSD tags, you should check the article history first.
