Mark Evans (general) edit

Thanks for your contributions to this page. Good work! Pdfpdf (talk) 11:09, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nice picture!! Well done. And you managed the rhubarb like a pro. I'm impressed. Pdfpdf (talk) 06:49, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP & pictures edit

Pictures on WP are a pain; I've been contributing to WP for about a year now, and I still haven't got it completely worked out. Unfortunately, the official portrait of Mark Evans is copyright (see http://www.defence.gov.au/copyright.cfm) and you do not have permission to load it onto WP. Very soon the WP-copyright-police will start inundating you with spam and will delete the picture. (It will be interesting to see how long they take!) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:09, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I deleted it from the page, but I dont seem to know how to delete the image itself?
You can't. Only WP "administrators" can delete pages.
(BTW: You can put a tag on a page which basically means: "Dear Admin, Please delete this page.", but I can't remember the detail at the moment. When I find a reference, I'll put it here.)

Ribbons edit

100x20px is tiny for my aging eyes. Is there some guideline somewhere saying that is the "standard" size? If not, how do you feel about me making them bigger? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:51, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there is a standard size, I just copied the format from another page,
Which page?
make them bigger if you wish.
Thanks. (Or at least, my eyes thank you!)
The table looks good!
Thank you!
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:20, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I got the format from Angus Houston's page.

Ta.

I think that the UNTSO ribbon may be a problem because I had to get the image off the internet because it wasn't on Wikipedia so I am guessing they will delete this image also?

It depends how quickly we act.
Tell me the URL of the page you got it from, and I'll see if I can fix up the rhubarb before they delete the picture.

(I don't really know how it all works on here so I am guessing you mean that I am to type 4(~) at the end of this message?) Ylbb (talk) 12:30, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's right. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:22, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

The URL where I got the image from was ---- http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.medals.lava.pl/int/r/un.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.medals.lava.pl/int/int.htm&h=30&w=105&sz=2&hl=en&start=9&um=1&tbnid=w6j508jI9CsHmM:&tbnh=24&tbnw=84&prev=/images%3Fq%3DUNTSO%2Bribbon%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

I displayed the ribbons the way they are worn. I have found a photo of the ribbons a while ago (excludes a few) http://www.defence.gov.au/budget/05-06/dar/volume_01/chapter_04/index.html Ylbb (talk) 08:07, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Note that photo was taken when AM as opposed to AO therefore it now comes before the DSC. Ylbb (talk) 08:30, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah. I was quoting from Australian Honours Order of Precedence and Australian campaign medals, but like you, I'd pay more attention to the photo. (Perhaps I mis-read it, or perhaps I just don't understand it well enough!)
I re-read those pages; it seems I missed the fact that the GSM is not a "foreign award" - it appears as one of the "Australian campaign medals"
BTW, how did you find out he's been awarded those 12 medals? ("It's an honour" only mentions a small subset of a recipient's awards; I've been looking for a better source.)
Pdfpdf (talk) 10:45, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I know from the time that he was on his tour as commander Joint Task Force 633 then based on the criteria of these medals then he would now have been awarded of them - I am certain of that. With the Australian Defence Medal he would also have this medal, you will notice that a lot of them at this sort of have rank have started wearing it, it is a recent medal which is an Australian military decoration which recognises current and former Australian Defence Force personnel who completed an initial enlistment period, or four years service. I did see a photo of him wearing this ribbon, I just can't seem to find it. Ylbb (talk) 12:37, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, there's no doubt you're a better source than "It's an Honour", but I guess I was hoping there was a website somewhere ... ;-)

photos edit

BTW: Did you see this one? It's on this page. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:17, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
And there's this one taken last week. Pdfpdf (talk) 15:04, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
MAJGEN Evans at Government House, 11 April 2008, receiving Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) from His Excellency Major General (Ret'd) Michael Jeffery, AC CVO MC KStJ, Govenor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia (copyright)

The photo from Government house looks great!!

Yes, I think so too. It's such a pitty that it's copyright and not "public domain" Pdfpdf (talk) 14:54, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tripovich edit

I like the page you have set up for Matt Tripovich!! Ylbb (talk) 09:55, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well thank you!
Not wanting to sound too arrogant, but I'm pretty pleased with it too.
I've been (unsuccessfully) looking for info on him for months. Eventually I got fed up, so I decided to ring his PA and ask where I could find some information.
The phone was answered by a (full) Colonel(!)
I described my problem and said "There's a bio for Matt's subordinate on the ADF Leaders page, but not for Matt".
The Colonel replied, "We'll have to fix that. What's your email address?"
Two minutes later a had a very comprehensive bio in my inbox! Pdfpdf (talk) 14:54, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
(BTW: How did you notice that I'd created it?)

Yeah it looks great, I just went into the history and saw you had created it Ylbb (talk) 08:23, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ribbon size edit

I changed the size of those two ribbons because when I pull the page up those two ribbons come up a lot larger than the others and it looks strange. When I made the sizes of the two ribbons smaller they then appeared to look the same as the others in the image. Now that you have changed them back those two look really big again? Ylbb (talk) 15:37, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh. Well, that complicates things. On my browser, all the 200x40 look the same size, and the 150x30 look about 3/4 that size, which although more logical, is of no help to you! Do the 100x20 all look the same size to you? (Or do those 2 look smaller than the others at that size too?) Pdfpdf (talk) 16:12, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

When they were 100x20 they all looked the same size. When they are at 200x40 those two ribbons appear quite a bit larger than the others, but when I set those two to 150x30 they all look the same size again.... Strange. Ylbb (talk) 05:04, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is strange, isn't it.
(Actually, I recall reading someyhing last week about there beong a bug in WP and what you can do about it, but I can't remember where I read it, and I can't remember what it said!!)
I'll have a look around and see what I can come up with. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:45, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

UNTSO edit

Actually - try this - http://www.medals.lava.pl/int/int.htm Ylbb (talk) 15:39, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Mmmm. Not as simple as I thought it would be.
Not sure what the solution is, so I tried this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:UNTSO_Medal.gif
That should avoid any problems ...
Well, it's past bed-time here. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 16:12, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
On reflection, this is probably not the best solution, but it will do until I can think of a better solution. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:45, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

David Hurley (General) edit

You wouldn't have a picture of David Hurley, would you? Pdfpdf (talk) 07:03, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nah, sorry I don't. On the defence page it says:

This work is copyright. You may download, display, print and reproduce this material in unaltered form only (retaining this notice and imagery metadata) for your personal, non-commercial use or use within your family or organisation. Apart from any use as permitted under the Copyright Act 1968 (for example, "fair dealing" for the purposes of reporting news under section 103B of the Copyright Act), all other rights are reserved. Requests for further authorisation should be directed to the Commonwealth Copyright Administration, Copyright Law Branch, Attorney-General's Department, Robert Garran Offices, National Circuit, Barton, ACT 2600, or posted online via www.ag.gov.au/cca.

So I dont understand why you cant get an image from the defence page, a bit like the one of the Chief of Army Peter Leahy, this photo states where it was sourced from. Ylbb (talk) 08:29, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

You can get it, but you're not allowed to use it on WP.
It depends on the copyright. The Leahy photo was sourced from USDoD; USDoD copyright allows you to copy it to WP. The ADF copyright says You may download ... only ... for your personal, non-commercial use. Putting it on WP is not your personal use. Pdfpdf (talk) 10:54, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:MAJGEN Evans.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:MAJGEN Evans.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already.

If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.

Thank you. Genisock2 (talk) 18:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Are you planning to do anything about this? It would be a shame to see that photo disappear; it's a really nice photo. Pdfpdf (talk) 15:01, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I must admit I am not too sure what they want me to do? I thought what I had done was ok? Ylbb (talk) 08:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lol!! I had pretty much the same reaction!
Well, I really don't know what was being complained about (which makes "fixing" it a bit of a "shot in the dark"), but I had a fiddle. Let's see if that keeps them happy? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 10:37, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:MAJGEN Evans .JPG edit

Image Copyright problem

Hi Ylbb!
We thank you for uploading Image:MAJGEN Evans .JPG, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

Copyright Police edit

Mmmm. It seems it didn't keep them happy. I'll ask them what they're on about. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 05:48, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, I'm wrong. It seems it did keep them happy.
Your new picture is called Image:MAJGEN Evans.JPG. This time they are not complaining about it; they are complaining about the first picture you uploaded which, for some reason, is named Image:MAJGEN Evans .JPG!! (i.e. there is a space between "Evans" and ".JPG".

I guess you can ignore the new message, or if you want to do something about it, you can ask them to delete the old picture (and no, I don't know how to do that - I guess you post a question to the page they refer to in their warning messages asking them how to delete a picture.) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:00, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, Ill just leave it hey. Thanks for that. Ylbb (talk) 10:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Decoration of Merit.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Decoration of Merit.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 11:05, 29 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think I've fixed it. Pdfpdf (talk) 02:18, 30 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
By-the-way: You know how I like them all to be 100x30px. I've resized it, but the quality is really poor. Can you have another go at it please? Your original is nice and crisp & clear - just the "wrong" ratio of length x breadth. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 02:18, 30 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

FYI (CJOPS) edit

Evans is still CJOPS till July 2011, isn't he? If you know differently, do you have a reference we can quote?
Hurley was not appointed AC until after his CJOPS stint.
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:21, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Apologies RE Hurley - I didn't realise that the award was as per the time of doing the job.
Hmmm. Fair comment! (I guess I need to look up what the "standard addendum" is and add it to the page. Ho hum ... )
I know that Evans will be finishing in May however I do not have a specific reference to quote.
Oh. I'm guessing that means he's retiring - is he? Pdfpdf (talk) 13:23, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think it is all yet to be confirmed.
Uh huh. We shall see what we shall see ... Thanks, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:36, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

OK. I admit it. I'm confused! edit

Hi! Regarding your edit, I now know better than to doubt your information, but this page, and others linked from here say:

Personnel at Head Quarters Joint Operational Command, in Bungendore, today farewelled outgoing Chief of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Mark Evans. After serving for more than 35 years in the Australian Army, Lieutenant General Evans is retiring.

So, what is it that actually has happened so far? And has anything about the future been announced? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:24, 11 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
