A cupcake for Yhuo edit

Hey Yhuo. Glad to see you're aboard - I'm looking forward to seeing your contributions! Do you use the Chinese version of Wikipedia as well? Would be curious to hear your thoughts on the differences between the two (assuming there are differences).

Oishiisou has given you a cupcake! Cupcakes promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. Spread the WikiLove by giving someone else a cupcake, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.

Welcome to Wikipedia! edit

On behalf of Wikipedia, I would like to welcome you to the community! My role as Wikipedia Ambassador serves to assist professors and editors working to incorporate the encyclopedia into the classroom. I would like to offer my assistance with any questions you may have with writing and editing, along with clarification and direction pertaining to community policies and guidelines. If you need a mentor, I can also help by recruiting an Ambassador to work with you on a one-on-one basis. Please consider me a resource and let me know how I can help. Qianling mountain edit

Hey there, I would do one of two things with the above referenced article. Moving it to the mainspace was a bit premature due to the lack of references. I would highly recommend userfying the article back to your sandbox, before it is deleted by another editor. Another choice would be to make an effort to locate significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. This is the means by which notability is established. While mountains are generally considered notable, the amount of sources and notability of the place are still important. If little information beyond statistics and coordinates is known to exist for a named geographic feature, there is probably not enough verifiable content for an article. Rather than deletion, it is recommended that these articles be merged and redirected to a more general geographic article. For example, the Guiyang article would be the appropriate target destination for the Qianling mountain article, if significant sourcing cannot be found. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 22:16, 30 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Article review and assessment edit

It has come to the attention of several Ambassadors and mentors that some students are attempting to participate in official review and assessment of articles, primarily for Good Article status or in attempts to review the work of their classmates. Others are offering second opinions to an official review being performed by other editors. Unrequested second opinions oftentimes lead to disputes. While the enthusiasm and initiative is admirable, it is actually inappropriate for new or inexperienced editors to review or assess articles in any capacity. The Good Article process, review, and assessment requires thorough understanding of the project's policies and guidelines, specifically pertaining to the Manual of Style, verifiability, neutral point of view, and the ability to accurately identify copyright violations, reliable sources, and topical, as well as general notability guidelines. With all sincerity, please do not attempt to review or assess any articles. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me either on my talk page or through email. Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 18:45, 31 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Cind.amuse. Thanks for your comment. I understand the potential issues for "new or inexperienced editors to review articles". However, respectfully, according to the GA review guide, articles can be reviewed by any registered user who has not contributed significantly to the article. While "contribution ratio" seems to be the only requirement, I am wondering whether there is any other policy around GA review that maybe you could direct me to? Thanks.Yhuo (talk) 23:04, 3 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Hey there, while the WP:GAN does not specifically list the reviewing guidelines with new editors and students in mind, it is generally understood within the community and widely discouraged. GAs are one of two classifications for high-quality articles that have been through an assessment nomination process. Editors don't have to be highly-experienced to make good suggestions for improving an article, but they should understand the basics of what a really good article or GA looks like. Editors need basic knowledge and understanding of the Manual of Style, verifiability, original research, copyright violations, neutral point of view, reliable sources, citations, and the image use policy. In order to accurately review and assess articles, an understanding of these guidelines and policies is vital. If new editors truly insist on reviewing articles, we encourage them to enlist the support of a GA mentor before proceeding. A list of GA mentors can be found here.
