Request to reassess Yellowknife, Northwest Territories edit

Hi,

The article is already assessed as a B class, the highest rating that an article can receive without a formal process. The next step would be to take it to WP:GAN to see if it meets the criteria for a Good Article. As a good article reviewer, however, I can tell you that even a quick skim of the article shows too many problems, most pressingly the fact that a large majority of the text in-line citations, which are used as a marker for proper referencing. I suggest that you fix this first as, without these citations, the article may be quickfailed for a lack of proper referencing. After that, you can submit it as a Good Article Nominee at the aforementioned link, where a reviewer will either pass, fail or put the article on hold in order for changes to be made. Good luck. Cheers, CP 01:10, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Favour edit

If you have the time I need a favour. What is the correct spelling for the Kitikimeot Boarding Home? Is it the "Lena Pederson Boarding Home" or "Lena Pedersen Boarding Home? Currently we have an article on Lena Pederson but it appears that there is also a Lena Pedersen. I know that Red Pedersen had a wife called Lena (no sources) but I can't track down if they are the same person with a variation on the spelling. If you don't have the time no worries. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 20:34, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the quick reply. I hadn't seen those. I did find a Hansard from the GN that managed to spell it Peterson and Pederson at the same time! I'm wondering if there are two different people here but if so who was Pederson. Right after I left you the message I got a call and now I'll be Yellowknife on Saturday for almost a week and I'll take a walk over and look. Cheers. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Yellowknifer Frontpage.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Yellowknifer Frontpage.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:22, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just noticed that neither the Yellowknife article or The Times Behind the Signs mentions Ragged Ass Road. It's probably the best know street in the city. There is an article on the Tom Cochrane album Ragged Ass Road. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 16:34, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Parker's Notch edit

Do you know anything about this? There is a bit of discussion at User talk:CambridgeBayWeather#Parker's Notch and User talk:Bearcat#Parker's Notch. Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 23:05, 27 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, it seems to me like there is an article in there somewhere — I'm just not knowledgeable enough about the territories to find it (*grin*). Thanks for looking into this. Also, when you're asking around, consider the possibility that it might just be a bad name for something, too. Bearcat (talk) 00:19, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I also just now went to the Toronto Public Library website and put a request in for the John Parker book that's being cited as a reference. Hopefully I'll get it early to mid-week and can look over it to see what the deal is. And over at WP:CWNB, User:JGGardiner gave me a couple of web references for Parker's role in drawing the NWT-Nunavut boundary ([1] and [2]); his guess seems to be that "Parker's Notch" is just a non-standard name for an article about the boundary dispute itself (which would be a good idea if we can manage it!) Orphaned non-free media (Image:Trumbo and Cleo 1947 HUAC hearings4.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Trumbo and Cleo 1947 HUAC hearings4.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Hello, YK Times. You happened to reword my external link to the City of Yellowknife's website. I have something somewhat personal to ask you. I'm visiting my relatives in Yellowknife this December and I was wondering if you as a resident, know any activities, museums, attractions, etc. I can do and visit during my two weeks in Yellowknife. This will be a GREAT help. Thank you for your time and effort, YK Times! :-)

Hello again, YK Times. Thank you for your last suggestion; they really seem to help. Anyways, I was wondering if you know the name of Yellowknife's local newspaper. Also, in Yellowknife, is there any place to buy newspapers like New York Times, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and other major newspapers? Thank you for your help once again.

Category:Education in Yellowknife edit

I know you are not as active but I wondered if some or all of the schools in the format "École Name School" should be moved to drop the word École. I realise that having École in front is the proper name but I suspect it's not the common name. Of the 3 I am familiar with, I would think a better title would be St. Patrick High School, J.H. Sissons School and Sir John Franklin High School would be more usual. Of course the most common would probably be St. Pat's, Sir John and JH Sissons but that won't work. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 19:52, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'm just going to start on them. Using the proper name is usually a good idea to start as it's easier to source than a common name. Although it does lead to odd looking things like Brockville-Thousand Islands Regional Tackaberry Airport and I know there is another airport with Ltd. in the name. I've requested a discussion regarding what our naming convention should be for NWT-related categories, since right now they're very inconsistent — some use the form "the Northwest Territories", while others use the form "Northwest Territories" without the word the. Schools edit

Thanks. It was fun to do. I spent 3 hours with my daughter driving around getting pictures while her husband was at work. I know we missed the Dettah school and it turns out we also forgot William McDonald Middle School. She knew we were missing one but couldn't remember which. We got a lot more than the schools, some of which are similar to existing images, but were able to get a few new ones. The only place we didn't want to go to take pictures was down to the two jails. We thought that the sudden arrival of two skinheads, she had her hair shaved off to raise money for cancer and mine is about the same, taking pictures might cause a bit of a stir.

By the way do you need User:YK Times/navbox deleted? I edited Template:YellowknifeNTSchools so it no longer needs to link to the navbox. Cheers. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 15:02, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Con mine aerial.jpg edit

I was just looking at the picture. You've got it listed under two different licences. If the licence is fair use (non-commercial use only) then it requires a rationale for each article it is used in. On the other hand if it is a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 then it can be used by anybody anywhere. The other thing is that with having two licences on there I don't know which is the correct one. Cheers. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:27, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
