Xania; please note the following discussion from the Metrolink talk page. If you have suggestions as to how best to deal with the obsolete map, they will be most welcome. User:Xania has added a sentence into the text noting the non-appearance of the airport line on a 'nearby' map. In my view, if such a note is needed, then it should be applied to the map itself (although even better to update the map). May I suggest removing the sentence? The map in question is this one - it doesn't yet have the airport line. Instead of inserting awkward editorial commentary into the article, it might be more productive for someone to drop a friendly note to the creator of this map, User:Jza84, and ask him/her to update it. Excuse me @TomHennell? Stop being so patronising. My addition was necessary and not merely a comment or note. Until the map is updated what I wrote is perfectly fine (don't remove the map). I hope I was only treated in such a patronising way because I am an old-time editor. I really, really hope you would never treat a newbie in such a way. The response to my simple, minor edits is a perfect example as to why most new editors never return and why fewer people contribute to the project these days. Re: Making a clickable imagemap

Imagemaps are one of the oldest and most promising advanced display systems available on Wikipedia, and are not in of themselves a complicated tool; however most users are either unaware of their existence or of the existence of tools meant to assist with making them.

There are a few ways to approach making interactive images on Wikimedia software:

• Create an image or graphic incorporating labels embedded within the graphic itself, which are then brought out via an ImageMap. This is what I did in {{Volcanic Eruption Map}}, and if you have some experience with making vector graphics it's the most widely applicable option. However, I confess that I'm surprised that you find this particular example so appealing! The image itself is suboptimal, and was eventually removed from the page it was intended for: a little bit of interactivity doesn't save the fact that it's a crowded, uninformative graphic. If you want to make good imagemaps you need two things: some vector editing skills, or someone with them at the image workshops, or a compelling image you've found "in the wild"; and this script.
• However, generally speaking it's better to instead create or instantiate an image and then lay blue-links over it, as, for instance, here or here. This is prettier, jives with Wikimedia formatting better, more clearly informs your audience of the interactivity of the graphic, does not cover up the link to the image underneath, and doesn't force you to qualify your image as a "clickable imagemap" in the caption. This requires the use of {{Location map}} or {{Image label}}. However there are no tools that I am aware of to assist with actually positioning the text: I've always had to do it manually, through trial and error.

I hope you find this helpful; I've had the intention to create some sort of a tutorial describing the process for a long, long time, but those interests died away with my general level of involvement in the project (almost nill, nowadays) a while ago. ResMar 22:10, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
