content edit

I probably should not have accepted the article, because it is as much an account of the regiment, even during periods when the subject was not there, as a bio of the subject. So Ive started cleanup, and have very much more to go.-- I expect it will end up at one-third half the present length If you want to write an account of the regiment, make that a separate article. Please do not restore material I have removed. I am doing this editing to correct my error in accepting it; the alternative way, would be for me to revert my acceptance, and send it back to draft. I have two queries--I added them to the text so they will be seen during editing, though they do not appear in the article:

Did van Lossberg sail with the regiment at the time? (if he did, there is some material I will restore) If not, when did he sail, and did he go directly to Newport? -->
Was van Lossberg present with the regiment at the Battle of White Plains? (if he was, there is some material I will restore) If not, where was he? --> DGG ( talk ) 01:25, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

To reply to your questions:

1. Von Lossberg did sail with the Regiment and arrived at New York with the First Division on August 12, 1776.[1] 2. Von Lossberg participated as a Brigade Commander at the Battles of White Plains and Fort Washington. He left New York for Rhode Island arriving there on December 8th 1776 [2]

The reason I have included information about the Regiment Von Lossberg, is that it was a family Regiment in as much as his brother General- Lieutenant Heinrich August von Lossberg was its Chief from 1770 onward. Given the Regiment carried the family name there is a close relationship, which I thought would give context to the Article.

Von Lossberg himself became Chief of the Regiment Von Jung-Lossberg (formerly the Musketier Regiment von Mirbach) in 1780, which he then commanded, so that reference should be included.

I hope that this assists in editing the Article.

    • Another question. why are we talking in this article about the regiment named for his older brother? And if it wa formed in 1683, a century earlier, it can't have been named at that time after FWvL's older brother. DGG ( talk ) 06:30, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

My point here is that the Regiment at the time of the American revolution was named after the Family with his older brother commanding it. After Trenton the remainder of the Regiment was named Von Alt Lossberg and the new Regiment was named Von Jung Lossberg with Friedrich Wilhelm von Lossberg commanding the latter. This gives a clear link of both Regiments directly to Friedrich Wilhelm von Lossberg, which I think a reader would want to know. In particular given his name and the name of the regiment are the same. I would not delete the references to the Regiment, but perhaps the connection can be explained more expressly. I would be happy to edit the text to show this.

You also asked about why the trip from Germany to New York is relevant. Von Lossberg did accompany the Regiment from Germany, although he did not command it. He would therefore have experienced the voyage and the description of it is associated with him. I can edit to make this clear.

Thanks
