Date links edit

You have discussed date links before. It seems that more and more people are becoming interested in the debate in many talk pages. I do not know if you have seen the discussion and votes at: new bot application. Voting may have ended, so I am not soliciting your vote. But I thought that you might like to read what has been said by other editors. Several editors feel strongly about it and the issue will inevitably be discussed again. bobblewik 11:50, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tessa / References edit

No problem. Thought I'd reference-ize is now, before the page grows and grows over the next few weeks, as Tessa gets more and more news coverage.

Take a look at Wikipedia:Footnotes for details of the syntax.

Give me a shout if any questions.

Thanks for your message. I wasn’t aware of this policy, but it makes sense. The only thing I'm still not clear on is wether year of release is prominent enough to link on its own? Justin Foote 19:30, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bob Gandalf edit

hello mate. to be honest, my use of ampersands is a bad habit i'm trying to shirk. i forget to check myself sometimes. a little while ago i heard on the radio that the young pop tart, Joss Stone, upon meeting Bob Geldolf, refered to him as Bob Gandalf. he'll always be Bob Gandalf to me now. as i was about to hit the submit button, i knew i should change it, but it tickles me so much that i couldn't help myself. i wondered how long it would stay there. 1 day it seems. thanks for bringing my contribution back from revert death though. Syed Babar Ali Zaidi edit

Hi, I noticed you put a prod on Syed Babar Ali Zaidi and I wanted to commend your quick action in this regard. Having spent considerable time recently looking at Pakistani history, I can confirm that this article is a hoax as far as it's claims go. It is an obvious attempt to mimic the genuine historical figure of Allama Iqbal. Pakistan was founded in 1947 so there is no way this individual (born 1975) could have been the spiritual father or the thinker of the country. I am going to change it to speedy deletion request because it is harmful to have such dishonest vanity on Wikipedia. I just thought it would be polite to let you know before I make the change. Just a note to reply to the message you left me on my Talk page about date linking.

I'm still pretty new to Wikipedia, but I'm not one wanting to do these things on purpose.

Thanks for the information and the link, I'll definately read through it.. and I'll have learnt things from it.

Thanks again, Mikay.

Welcome to Esperanza! edit

Welcome, Whouk/Archive02, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in April, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2 edit

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
Signed...

My RfA edit

Dear Whouk: Thanks for commenting on my RfA. Can you help me out in understanding the warning/block process? I thought I understood it pretty well. --CTSWyneken 10:45, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

That does help. Thanks. Re: the asking for an admin to warn, if I remember correctly, this was an anonymous user. I avoid warning such because many people can use the same IP. I hate being unfair. Yet the vandalism was immediate and continuing very rapidly. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that an admin would have tools to help with that issue. Confronted by something similar as an admin, I would see what my toolset could do to help with it. If I could not solve the dilemma, I'd seek out Jayg and others for advice.

Prior to the time a month or so back when it was first suggested I might make a good admin, I really did not pay much attention to such issues. At the very least, this RfA will help me grow as an editor.

Thanks again! --CTSWyneken 11:38, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism edit

Hey, I have noticed that an annonomous user 82.111.23.171 whose talk page you can access here User talk:82.111.23.171 goes around vandalising pages and then reverts them five minutes later. You can look at their history to see this. They insert random names of people (i assume friends) and then change them back. I was wondering if you, or someone you know has the power to block them from editing? Thanks, Shudda

Thank you for the help you gave with my Doctorwhospecialbox template, which I had been intending for use on the "Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death" article.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3 edit

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
Signed...

Lifting Protection edit

Bryant Gumbel (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) edit

The article was protected over claims that certain edits violated a NPOV. This is not vandalism according to Wikipedia's vandalsim policy There were also attempts to discuss this on the talk page. Two user's involved in the dispute were both stubborn in what should be included in the article. Again according to Wikipedia's policy on vandalsim this is not vandalsim. Also note that [2]Wikipedia's policy on semi-protection states, " It is also not an appropriate solution to regular content disputes since it may restrict some editors and not others." Therefore in the spirit of Wikipedia and in compliance with stated policies of Wikipedia the protection should be lifted. Mbofuc 19:44, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Maybe I'm not following enwiki convention, but that talk page does not comment or discuss the contents or layout of Darin Zanyar, and it's not even in English, which makes having a blue link to it misleading and the page pointless. I'll translate it for you:

"Heello Darin ! I am an 11-year-old girl who adores you,Hehe!!! My sis' knows your cousin fun:P Or they know eachother a little can I have your home address please SMS to Marre_94girl@hotmail.com kizz kizz//Marie ɱLoveʝ"

Does enwiki consensus speak for keeping such talk pages? At svwiki we would not even hesitate to delete it. Caesar 20:45, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good, thank you! We've both learned something today :-) Good luck administrating! –Caesar 20:58, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Hi Whouk, thanks for supporting my request for adminship! Unfortunately, it ended with a final tally of 45/15/2, no consensus. I may have another go in the near future, once the school year is over. Thanks again! -- getcrunkjuicecontribs 23:10, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Help! All wikilinks have become underlined! edit

Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, all wikilinks in the text have become underlined. What have I/has somebody else done? I much prefer wikilinks without underlining. Tamino 10:40, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Even more bizarrely, by logging out and then in again, I got the underlining to disappear. What on Earth is going on? Tamino 10:46, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bands edit

If you're going to keep an eye on bands that shouldn't have an article, consider working on things like List of black metal bands and their ilk. They're set up encourages creating articles, many of which don't need them according to WP:BAND. I discovered that as the likely source of a repeated recreation after being deleted. - Taxman Talk 12:17, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Luka (Verbal Vets) edit

Hi Whouk,
Oh..do I spell your (nick)name correctly? If so, could you tell me how I should pronounciate it, please? Well...I'd like to thank you for your change regarding my article Luka (Verbal Vets). You placed it into my user space at User:Lukasz Krawczyk/Luka (Verbal Vets), and you're appreciated for that. Of course..I'm not going to recreate this article in the main article space, rest assured. (By the way..I just noticed my another articles regarding Imam Bilal-Firmin as well as Rahim Muhammad (members of the Natural Born Spitters hip-hop group) were erased too.) So thanks a lot, and happy editing to you too. Cheers, and !שלום Peace out! — Luka (Verbal Vets) 12:49, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Categorizing edit

With reference to the changes you did to my categorizing, I would rather wish to point 2 things: a) If you use the full name of the person, specially when, like in the case of Chilean names, there's a composite last name (meaning, using father and mother's last names, in that order), the lists won't be in alphabetical order. I have tried it several ways, and just putting the first initial of the last name you want the person listed under seems to solve the problem. b) when you reversed the changes made, you eliminated many people from the lists (they were new categories) which will need quite a lot of work to put back together, and also, you disarranged quite a few names from their correct position. I know you meant well, but please, BEFORE doing it again, do contact me, so as to avoid having to correct everything twice. It's quite annoying. Many thanks. --Mel Romero 06:33, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'll answer point by point as you say you didn't follow it all...
a) Could you give me an example of what you mean? For someone like Alberto Blest Gana, the only different between sorting on "Blest Gana" rather than "B" is that instead of appearing at the top of the "B" category he appears between, say, someone called Black and someone called Boone - which is where he should appear.
Well, look for example at the two Errazuriz presidents (father and son) - Errazuriz Echaurren should be BEFORE Errazuriz Zañartu since both have the same first name, but using the system that you advocate happens exactly the oppossite. Then check all the other Errazuriz in that list, and you will see what I mean.

b) I removed some from the category Category:Chilean people, but that was because it was a duplication. If someone is in Category:Chilean generals, they don't need to be in the "people" category too as the generals category is a sub-category of Category:Chilean people by occupation. What do you mean by "disarranged quite a few names from their correct position"? Can you give me an example? —
Ok, just a couple of examples for your sake - 1) Francisco de la Lastra should be listed under "L" not under "D", according to common usage for names employing the "de" or "del" or "de la" particle. Is like the "von" in German or the "van der" in Dutch. You don't find Beethoven under "V" but under "B" (the last name is "van Beethoven" after all). 2) Cristian de la Fuente should be listed under "F", now after your corrections is not listed AT ALL, the same happens with Admiral Manuel Blanco Encalada. 3) sub-categories should be just that, special caracteristics, but the possessors should also be listed under "Chilean people" in general, because if not it would be very difficult for people who are looking for someone but don't know their profession to find them, the categorizing should make it easier, not more complex. At least everyone in that list has been arranged that way, if we were to follow the other suggestion, then the list of Chilean people would be empty save for the sub-categories. --Mel Romero 07:59, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ambient Music edit

Hello, thank for you welcome message. I need your opinion on the following: Gene Poole reverted my edits on the Ambient Music article. What I assert there, is very commonly shared knowledge. Just vist Amazon.com to get aknowledged about people's opinion on ambient music. This person also defined my contributions as eccentric and POV. I think he should be banned from here. I'm into music since late 1970s, I studied Physics at university, I worked (some years ago) as a sound engineer with some musicians in my area, one of them is academically trained and worked with soundtracks of minor films. I regret to realize that its not the first time in which youngsters make every possible effort in order to cut away "older" or serious Wikipedians. Brian Wilson 11:11, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

My comment on Gene Poole that defined my contribution as "eccentric" edit

Would you please tell me what is not civil in my comment? Just making someone note that this is not the first time that he is offending someone by saying "eccentric" as he did in the note that he posted with his reverting? Guys, I really can't understand this "community", or maybe some dozens people that are here pretending to be a community. There are dozens of essays both on books and in music magazines, published in the last 30 years, that clearly state what ambient music is, and what is not (thank you for your suggestion regarding the use of 4 tildes, but I use them only in few cases).Brian Wilson 13:46, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

LOL Deiz got to it. He's been an admin only 2 days :) :) Be simpler about it, I think. Posting an article about a db-band such as Krayze is borderline-spam-vandalism. No process at all is due for deleting a picture that could only be used in a db-band's article. - CrazyRussian talk/contribs/email 13:40, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Recent article deletion - castpodder edit

Apparently a AfD was carried out without verified reseach or reason. The reason seems to be the article creator was banned, which really makes no difference, and it had no notability. However that is incorrect. The developer and article's creator made a blog post[3] about this, he isn't happy so be-warned, and provided its notability with sources from 2 major linux magazines, LinuxJournal and Linux Mag, Adam Curry's direct code base it was created from, a major University of Buffalo uses it in there own linux distribution, its listed at the Free Software Foundation which isn't easy to get on in the first place, and mentioned a few times on ZDNET. Also it seem's that one reason for deletion was no userbase was mentioned, how can that be a basis for deletion? With linux and its GPL license actual count of any use is hardly going to happen with at least 7 distributions that contain the program plus a Univeristy that supplies it for there students. If that is a requirement then all linux software listed here should be deleted as there is no way to count a userbase. I hope the article is undeted since it and can be easly proved to a valued article to WP. 192.242.17.39

RfA Thank You! edit

Thanks Whouk,

I am honored by your support in my recent successful request for adminship. As an administrator, I am your servant, ready to help however I can. (In your case, since you've had the tools longer than I, my best use might be menial labor!) My talk page is always open; should you need anything, or should you see me making a mistake -- probably a common occurrence -- please do let me know. I will depend on the good sense of the community to keep me from making a complete fool of myself! :) In gratitude, Xoloz 16:43, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Steve Bard Page edit

Hi,

can you help me out. I posted less than an hour ago two new pages about two Lib Dem candidates in the Blaenau Gwent by-elections. You modified these and categorised them, to my appreciation. someone has subsequently blocked the Steve Bard page, claiming copyright infringement. The alleged infringement comes from material used in a press release that was written by a colleague of mine, is publically available and I have full permission to use it. I have posted this on the page talk page and on the copyright page. I just thought you could look at that and add weight, as a controller type who has seen the pages.

Thanks,

Kev O'Connor

ps. I also went to Leeds, graduated last year.

Gabriel Grey edit

I was wondering why you deleted the Gabriel Grey article I created this morning? Gabriel is an up and coming member of the UK Pro Wrestling Scene, working a gimmick that spans over at least half a dozen promotions and across the Irish sea into Irish wrestling as well. He's worked several promotions with high profile US stars included on Wikipedia, and for some of the prmotions listed in the "Professional Wrestling in the United Kingdom" wiki article.

Also, I had no idea what had happened to the article - it took me a good 20 minutes or so to track down what had happened and where to ask about it as this was my first attempt at creating - a little note at least as to what had happened and why would have been greatly appreciated!

Regards, TheInno

Will, you might want to take a look at this new user's message on my talk page. I don't think you were really too harsh on her, but she has sort of taken the deletion personally. I just thought I should let you know. --TantalumTelluride 00:06, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
