cardiff arcades

I don't know if you know Cardiff, but the media Wales (S Wales echo) article was a lie (or at least the curzon rep was lieing), as many buisness have closed down in recent months and few reopening, and no expanding, You can see for your self. Rhymney River

Hi Welshleprechaun

I've replied on my talk page but thought I'd drop you a line here anyway. Previously numerous articles linked to either River Rhymney or Rhymney River. I've been editing the River Rhymney's into Rhymney River's to ensure some consistency. I agree that the word order is unusual for a British river name and I can only immediately think of its two neighbours the Sirhowy River and the Ebbw River which follow this unusual line. If you do as I did, a Google search on this word order for any of the three, you'll get a much larger trawl of results for 'X River', similarly they are all named in this reverse fashion on Ordnance Survey maps.

Economy of Cardiff template

We have to apply some discretion in this template, it will become meaningless if it is simply a list of every organisation in Cardiff (or for that matter, every event that has or will take place there). After all, the focus here is on the economy. Independent record labels can be as small as a micro-business or even a sole trader - there's little evidence that the ones we're debating are any bigger. These kinds of enterprise make absolutely trivial contributions to a local economy. A takeaway could employ more people and have a higher turnover! I have no objections to these garage labels appearing on a music or culture template (as long as they are notable within that context, and not just releasing music by unknown local bands) but they are out of place here.--Pondle (talk) 16:38, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

List of tallest buildings in the United Kingdom

I'm glad that you're looking for compromise, but I still think that your line:

As of 2010, the majority of buildings taller than 100m are concentrated in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester

is a little misleading. Of all the buildings on the list, three are in Manchester, two each in Leeds and in Liverpool, but a whopping 37 are in London! So it would be more reasonable to say:

As of 2010, the majority of buildings taller than 100m are concentrated in London.

In my view, it would be more sensible to return to the original simple line:

This is a list of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom taller than 100 metres (330 ft).

The reader can then see for themselves what and where the buildings are.

BTW as far as this is concerned - well, neither of us exactly covered ourselves in glory in that little episode (I've never said that I was perfect) but I don't think it's particularly good example of bad faith on my part. I was sticking up for a long-standing MoS and supported by other editors on the talk page. Anyway, let's try to move past that and work constructively where we can. I sense that we are always going to have disagreements but Wikipedia isn't a place to hold grudges, we should discuss differences, as we are doing now.--Pondle (talk) 17:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

If you pick the names that the world already uses, and the scopes that it gives, for these things, three things will happen:

• You won't face accusations of original research.
• Instead of these things being obscure articles for a niche group of bus enthusiasts, they become important articles in human geography, dealing with the local transport geography of a major conurbation.
• As a consequence, you can probably rope in the railway article writers, cycling article writers, and human geographers from other WikiProjects to turn the articles from things that people dismiss as "just those bus geeks writing timetables" into what you could probably make, as long as you incorporated all of the human geography aspects, into GA or FA class articles on these various transport corridors.

Wales

I have put the Wales article forward for GA status. It just needs tweaking, and maybe a heavy-handed swipe from outside to get it in place. I am writing to those who are constant contributors and defenders of Wales and Welsh articles, to not scream at me for doing this, but to help get the article through. If we fail, we fail, there is nothing wrong with that; but Wales should be a Good Article at least and if it takes good intentioned amateurs to reach that then so be it. Sport in Cardiff

I noticed that you changed the Welsh translation templates of the Cardiff leisure centres from ''{{lang|}}'' to ''{{lang-cy}}'. Before you change any other translations, I wanted to make sure you were aware of its effect: 1 it causes the word “Welsh” (linking to Welsh language) to appear before the each translation – an overlink. 2 the translation changes to normal script, rather than italics (as it should be). Hi there, just noticed this image that you created showing the locations of leisure centres in Cardiff has a mistake on it. You've placed the International Pool where St David's hotel is rather than in the Sports Village which is where it actually is. Sparks page

Hi Welshleprechaun,

Please can you let me know who you are (preferably outside Wiki) so I can discuss the Sparks page with you (I am assuming you are a fellow CRT26 member!). I have given much time and thought to creating this page and setting it up a certain way. I partly (not entirely) undid some of your recent revisions, and note that you have since completely unwound this! Hi welshleprechaun

My apologies, I assumed you like I were a member of Cardiff Round Table (we organise the event). It's good to have one of the proper Wiki guys on the case.

Fair point about some of the edits. A few things that I think are worth doing:

- One of the links that I had up was to the Charities Commission Page about Cardiff Round Table's charitable fund. I can tell you that Sparks in the Park is basically the only fundraising activity that CRT organises. Therefore, the financial history given there is a direct record of the money raised at the event over the past several years. You can't get much more neutral than the page of the charities regulator.

- The Wales Online article that is up there about Sparks 2009 can be updated with their write up of Sparks 2010 here: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/cardiffonline/cardiff-news/2010/11/08/sparkling-display-for-south-wales-crowds-91466-27616502/

- I can't see any issue with the "Aims of Sparks in the Park" section?

- I also think that some of the early history of the event is worth having up there. Some of that is on the page http://www.cardiffroundtable.org/history-of-sparks-in-the-park/

- The stuff about Sparks in the Park Highland Michigan was added by them not me. It seems only fair though to give a mention to other events to use the name.

Hi there, I amended the flybe page to reflect their current commercial practises. I work at Manchester Airport as a flight dispatcher and have contacts with flybe in their bases in Exeter and Belfast City. I understand there was no citation as I do not know how to cite myself. Flybe are known in the industry as fly'may'be.

just wondered why no-one has updated the mid year population estimates for Cardiff? The current page presents the mid 2008 estimates published in 2009. The ONS/WAG issed revised mid 2009 estimates last year.

(The) Cardiff Story

Hi Welshleprechaun,

I understand what you are saying, however the first piece of text on the official website says "The first Cardiff Story galleries will open on the 1st April, 2011"...also in the latest News on 10/3/2011 "Cardiff Story opening date announced"...also in the Big Give it says "Through the Cardiff Story Big Arts Give Christmas Challenge, you can help us ensure that we deliver world class galleries by making a donation towards its development..." all of which suggests (along with the website www.cardiffstory.com) that "The" is not really part of the title otherwise "the" would be in capitals. See the Manual of Style, which states "Do not use a, an, or the as the first word (Economy of the Second Empire, not The economy of the Second Empire), unless by convention it is an inseparable part of a name (The Hague)" I feel (from the above examples) that "The" is not an inseparable part of the name, so that is why I changed it. Swansea

Your last edit summary on Swansea did concern me. Although I don't disagree with your reversion of the previous edit, I do have concerns about bringing the tribal rivalries of South Wales onto the pages of Wikipedia. I don't believe it is either helpful or appropriate, especially from an experienced editor. Both Cardiff and Swansea seem to be estimable cities. • Template names have now been standardised, for example Template:Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest and Template:Countries in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest have both been moved in order to be consistent. • {{WikiProject Eurovision}} now accepts importance ratings as well as quality ratings, and the project now has a formal assessment department which gives details on how to assess articles, and provides a place for contributors to request re-assessment. Media in Cardiff

That source is from Cardiff Council in 2003! It is nearly 2012 now and a lot of things change considerably in a decade. Plus that fact that is probably bias as it is produced by Cardiff Council. Likewise Leeds and Manchester local authorities claim the same and there is little honesty. From the research I've done, Manchester has the largest media sector outside London. I can't find anything that backs Cardiff.

Picture remains bright as BBC gears up for move, 16 June 2010. The FT - quote: "Manchester is home to far and away the biggest broadcasting cluster outside London"

Manchester to be home of new body for media and digital sector, 21 February 2011. Manchester Evening News - quote: "Manchester is the economic centre of the north west, and Europe’s second largest media hub after London. "The creative, digital & new media sector in Greater Manchester employs 61,000 and is worth £2.6bn."

Creative and Media Industries - Manchester MIDAS (questionable). Quote: Manchester is Europe’s second largest creative, digital and media hub and the industry is growing faster here than anywhere else in the UK. With strengths in everything from film and TV to games development. Employing over 64,000 people across 5,800 businesses, the creative, digital and new media sector can be found in most districts and suburbs.

North West Region - Manchester opendoorsmedia.co.uk - Quote: At the moment Manchester is responsible for 16% of the entire of the UK’s media output.

I'm deleting that quote from the Media in Cardiff. The FT is a certainly a reliable source. If you can find a reliable, up to date source which can state that Cardiff has the largest media sector outside London then you can re-add the statement. In a recent edit to the page Vibeke Hein Bæra, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. ESC 2013

Hi there,

Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you could explain further why removing this part from the lead section of ESC 2013 is irrelevant as a reason? Isn't the lead suppose to summarise the content of the entire article anyway? Of course. You're right - the lede/lead should indeed summarise the article. However, the information I removed was not part of the summary of this article, which concerns Eurovision 2013 not Eurovision 2011. It is entirely relevant that Armenia is returning after a year break, but what their 2011 entry was and who sung it does not pertain to information regarding the 2013 show. I have nothing against bringing more info into the lead to invite the reader to read on about the 2013 contest. If they wish to read details about 2011, they can do so on the 2011 article, to which a link is provided within the info retained. Welshleprechaun 20:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Based on your interpretation there, it doesn't reflect on what I have been told they way articles should be portrayed, and what they should include. Yes, the 2013 article should primarily have details/information about the 2013 contest. However, in the ESC 2012 GA review currently on-going I have been told that if we're to mention a country returning, then we should also mention briefly who represented that country last, and with what song. This provides a brief update to a reader, saving them the time to trawl through other articles just to find out who last represented a nation and with what song, and also presents a good detailed article for the general reader who may not be familiar with Eurovision. So who is right, the GA reviewer and how they say what should be included, or yourself, who is saying such details are irrelevant? Wesley☀Mouse 21:13, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Eurovision Young Musicians - Austria 2012 On 11 May 2012, Norwegian, Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad, won the 16th Eurovision Young Musicians 2012, in Vienna, Austria. This is a biennial event, and the next contest will take place in 2014, with Vienna most likely to be the host nation for a fifth consecutive time. Eurovision Young Dancers - Norway 2011 The next contest is scheduled to take place in 2013 - the host city is expected to be announced towards the end of 2012. The past month has been an eventful one for the project as a whole. Old dramas have closed, new ones have begun. Four articles nominated for GA review, three of them passed and promoted, with one of them making ProjectEurovision history by being the first annual contest article to ever achieve GA status. If it wasn't for the hard work and the many hours of team collaborations that we have endured on this project, then those accolades would never have been gained. Each of those article promotions are as a result of your continuous determination to be part of the best team this project has seen for a long time. Project 4 - "Country" in the contest "year" involves: Creating a page for each country participating in the contest each year. This will give information about the year in Eurovision for that country, like how the song was chosen (selection events), how well it did, any other information about its participation that year. Project 5 - Sourcing involves: On Wikipedia, it is very important not only to have the correct information, but to show where you got it from so it can be verified. Editor's should be finding additional sources to reference information with. This project also includes checking all similar pages to make sure things are consistent across the board and correcting any errors. A listing of pages marked for some sort of cleanup is available here. Swansea (again)

Welshleprechaun: Wikipedia was to established to provide accurate information on a variety of subjects, not pander to childish, parochial prejudices. As stated by Pondle, the article on Swansea is about the whole city and county, not merely the urban areas. If you cannot drop your parochial nonsense, I strongly recommend that you stop contributing.

Hmmm, I never realised that only the figure for the urban subdivision was being cited in the lead - this change seems to have been introduced sometime in 2011, and strangely passed me by. It made the article inconsistent with the topic - which is, to repeat, *the City and County* of Swansea, not an ONS statistical artefact - and also inconsistent with the other Welsh cities.

All the Welsh cities contain rural areas as well as an urban core, and all of them have different population data for the local authority, the ONS urban subdivision and the wider urban area stretching beyond the county boundaries. You'll know all this from past debates on the Cardiff talk page.

As for your point about what figure people are most interested in, well, the most common practice is to use local authority figures as the basic of city populations - as in the recent Welsh Government reports on city regions, [1] or this LSE report on the 2001 census.[2] This is fine because, as again you'll know from past debates, city status was granted to the *counties* of Swansea (and Cardiff) in 1996 - not to the ONS urban subdivisions of the same name.[3]

On the issue of your objectivity, well I'm afraid that claim would have more credibility if you didn't have a history of provocative edits and edit summaries on Swansea-related articles. I'm far from being the only editor who's noticed the pattern.Pondle (talk) 19:32, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Welshleprechaun, sadly there are times when an editor's record and past conduct is pertinent, and given edits and comments like these[4][5][6][7][8][9] you can hardly claim to have a history of accurate, helpful and non-partisan contributions to Swansea and related articles. As for 'provocative edits' on my part, well I believe that you're the only one who's ever "had a problem" with my record on here, which I think speaks for itself.

Local boosterism does indeed happen on lots of articles, but singling out Swansea as a particularly "notorious" example is a bit rich. If you ask a neutral such as Snowded, Bettia or Ghmyrtle I'm sure they'll confirm that much of the problem with boastful additions and peacock terms on Welsh articles has, sadly, been on Cardiff and related pages (including a few changes that you yourself have made over the years, such as [10][11][12]).

As for the issue at hand, I'd only support placing the ONS urban area stats in the lead on Swansea if that approach was applied consistently across the Cardiff, Newport and Wrexham articles too. Swansea shouldn't be singled out for special treatment simply because you feel that its boundaries city are 'wrong'. This is supposed to be a neutral encyclopedia, for that we need a consistent approach. Pondle (talk) 13:09, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Of course content disagreements are par for the course on Wikipedia. But where I've had occasional differences with editors such as Daicaregos or FruitMonkey, we've always been able to resolve them amicably, and I've never questioned the motivation for their edits.

In contrast, many of your edits on Swansea-related pages - for example, your removal of Swansea from the Mumbles Pier article, or your recent change of "Swansea Central Library" to "Swansea Library" - have been both inaccurate and (at best) pointedly unhelpful. Ten seconds of Googling would have shown you that "Swansea Central Library" is indeed correct, so why make this change? Were you trying to make a point or simply to irritate other contributors?

As for your accusation that the Swansea article is "notorious" for boosterism: (a) 'notorious' suggests "widely known", whereas you're the only person making this claim; and (b) you'd be taken more seriously if you could provide diffs as evidence. At the moment, your allegation seems to be based solely on the fact that the ONS urban area stat isn't mentioned in the lead, as opposed to the infobox or the demography section. That's pretty thin gruel. Notice that recent versions of the Cardiff and Newport articles haven't even mentioned the equivalent figure anywhere. By your definition, isn't that also "notorious boosterism"?

Having said all this, I welcome your acceptance of consistency, and there does need to be a broader discussion of what stats belong in which parts of each article. The current approach is a mess that lends itself to POV disputes, and the WP:UKCITIES guidelines aren't that helpful on the technicalities of population statistics. I'll raise this elsewhere. • Template names have now been modernised and/or megred into super-templates, for example Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest has now been merged into Template:Eurovision Song Contest making it even easier to find everything under one template. If you are planning to create a new template, please keep the standardised titles in mind. Other templates have been modernised and a full list of them can be found here.
• The Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision Song Contest articles have now been standardised to keep a consitancy throughout the project and to the genral reader too. Skeleton article drafts can be found for Eurovision Song Contest by Year and Junior Eurovision Song Contest by Year.

The "cultural extravaganza" concept may be the same, but the format is completely different. The Radio Festival will be competitive, while the TV Festival is just a showcase of music so is non-competitive. ABU Radio Song Festival 2012 - Twenty-six entries from sixteen countries took part in a preliminary selection round. Of those, fifteen have been selected and will perform in the first ABU Radio Song Festival on 11 October 2012. ABU TV Song Festival 2012 - Thirteen countries have confirmed participation in the first ABU TV Song Festival on 14 October 2012.

WikiProject Eurovision - Memorandum

Eurovision Mini Memorandum 30 June 2013 There are a couple of discussions taking place via the project talk page that require urgent attention from as many members as possible. These are... A new RfC has opened at Project Eurovision in regards to how "Country by Contest" articles such as Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest, Denmark in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest and Australia in the ABU Song Festivals will be stylised. Also there is an urgent discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Colour codes for last placings, which is discussing a matter in connection to chromostereopsis (blue text on red backgrounds). And finally, the newsdesk are looking to recruit a couple of project volunteers to assist in compiling the monthly newsletters, as one of the co-ordinators has taken an indefinite period of time away from Wikipedia due to personal reasons. New Wales Coast Path WikiProject

I see you're a member of WikiProject Wales and have contributed to Welsh articles. There's a new project, Llwybrau Byw!|Living Paths! under development which you might be able to contribute to. Lonely Planet rated the coast of Wales "the best region on Earth" in 2012, yet there is a very low number of articles on the history and culture of places along the Coastal Path and the many and various activities and attractions. This promises to be an exciting project as it gathers momentum with many Users joining in. Let's make this WikiProject, like the path itself, the best on earth! Nomination of List of bus stations in Wales for deletion
