I don't have any objection with the article or section. It could be an article itself in Current events. I request you to do so. There may be thousands of issues associated with such university, we should not list it on the front page of MSU. It is a global encyclopedia and should include the details about the university. About Khatri

I ned your help regarding whether Walias are khatris

I know I made an edit about Walia also being called Ahluwalias. This is because I am one myself but noone is really sure in my family and relations whether we are Khatris or a groop such as Sonis and Aroras. Also if if we have mentioned Walias then why don't we have Monetek Singh Ahluwalia in the list of known personalities?

Please don't let caste bias come into this.

India basher

Hello Vikram Singh. At the moment, I can't see how the article is encyclopedic. Unless it is done to a standard like Anti-Americanism, then I don't really like these articles because they are vulnerable to subjectivism and woolliness. Perhaps some kind of article about international relations would be more appropriate. As for my Vietnamese background, I'm not sure why this would particularly matter? India Basher

India Basher is a term often used by reporters for a few prominent western politicians who are critial of India as a political entity (see references below). It has specifically been used for who have supported separationist movements in India. It is also occasionally used for writers who are seen as being critical of India.

Origin of Anti-India bias:

This map reflects the findings of Freedom House's 2006 survey Freedom in the World, concerning the state of world freedom in 2005.

  Free. Freedom House considers these states to be liberal democracies.

  Partly Free

  Not Free

India became independent in August 1947, and adapted a constitution in January 1950. As Churchill had written on the even of India's independence [1], a country of 18 official languages, 1652 dialects and numerous distinct social groups, was not expected to survive as a united nation. It was believed that a democracy can survive only in a relatively wealthy nation.

Independent India has struggled with poverty, crop failures, disorders, wars, corruption etc. Yet democracy has managed to survive and India has now become an example for the third world.

India's first Prime Minister Nehru chose an independent course for India, independent of both USA and the Soviet Union. India emerged as a major proponent of non-alignment movement. This caused several western politicians to become hostile to India.

Anti-India Legislations

A few politicians in the west, specially in USA, have been active in introducing anti-India legislations and have opposed aid to India.

In 1997, HR 182, the Human Rights in India Act, was sponsored by Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) and Rep. Gary Condit (D-CA). to cut-off U.S. development aid to India until the president certifies to Congress that India has taken "certain steps to prevent human rights abuses" in India. Another resolution, H. Con. Res. 37, sponsored by Condit and Rep. Dana Rohrbacher (R-CA) called for an internationally-supervised plebiscite in Punjab on the question of independence for the region. Dr. Gurmit Singh Aulakh of the Council of Khalistan was involved in these legislations [2].

Dan Burton introduced H.R. 4641 in 1990 to terminates United States developmental assistance for India in regards to "barbaric atrocities were being committed against the Sikh and Kashmiri communities by the India regime" [3].

Support of the Separationist movements:

Several prominent politicians in the West have been supporters of the separationist movements in India. These movements include:

• Khalistan: proposed Sikh nation around state of Punjab, India
• Nagalim: a proposed Christian nation around modern Nagaland
• Kashmir Separationists: (JK Liberation Front etc.) a proposed Muslim nation in modern state of Jammu and Kashmir

Prominent India Bashers:

The major politicians who have been termed "India basher" include the following.

• Edolphus Towns, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, from New York. He has been a supporter of Khalistan and Nagalim. In the US House of Representatives on 26/27 July 2000, a statement by him, John T. Doolittle of California, and Dan Burton of Indiana stated:

"1. India's campaign of terror against minorities is clearly designed to wipe out the minorities. It is time to declare India a terrorist state and it is time to cut off American aid to India to help strengthen the hand of human rights there. And we should support self-determination for all the minority nations seeking their freedom from India. The predominantly Christian nation of Nagalim, which India holds, is about to begin talks with the Indian government of their political status. I hope that these talks w ill be the beginning of freedom not just for the people of Nagalim but for all the minority peoples and nations of South Asia."

"2. Strong action must be taken. We should cut off India's aid until human rights are respected. We should demand self-determination for the people of Khalistan, Kashmir, Nagalim, and the other minority nations under Indian rule in the form of a free and fair plebiscite on the question of independence. That is the way democratic nations do it. Is India the democracy it claims to be or not?" [4]

• Dan Burton, member of the United States House of Representatives from Indiana. He has been a supporter of an independent Kashmir and Khalistan. [5]. On Oct. 7, 1994, he declared in the U.S. House of Representatives [6]recognizing the "seventh anniversary of the declaration of Khalistan":

"On October 7, 1987, 10 years ago today, major Sikh organizations in Punjab and around the world declared the independence of Khalistan--their homeland. I rise today in part to mark this important and solemn day. The fact that this independence movement has persisted for 7 years under the withering oppression of Indian security forces is a tribute to the Sikh people."

"I rise also to recognize the work of the Council of Khalistan, based here in Washington, DC, and supported by Sikh communities across the country. Dr. Gurmit Singh Aulakh, the president of the Council of Khalistan, has worked tirelessly over the last 7 years to bring the suffering of the Sikhs to the attention of the Congress, the administration, and the world community."

• Jesse Helms, former five-term Republican U.S. Senator from North Carolina. About two decades ago, he had circumvented the State Department's refusal of a visa to separatist Khalistan activist Jagjit Singh Chauhan by inviting him to testify before a Senate agriculture committee he headed. [7]

• Lord Avebury is a member of the British House of Lords. He has been an active supporter of the Kashmir separationist movements [8]. He is the founder of "Friends of Kashmir" and is said to control Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) [9]. In a Sept. 1995 inter view he stated:

"The tendencies in India will follow those in other parts of the world, a centrifugalism, .... I'm thinking of the break-up of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia."

They have sponsored activities of the anti-India separationist groups by introducing and supporting legislations opposed to India being a unified nation.

Some of them have been accused of having received financial support from Pakistan [10] and separationist groups. [11][12]

Recent developments

The relationship between India and USA have undegone remarkable changes since Clinton's 2000 visit to India [13], and specially after 9/11 attack in 2001. India is no longer an ecomonic basket case, but is now widely regarded as a major economic partner of USA; as well as an ally in the war on terror.

There is now an increased respect for India's democracy. Thomas L. Friedman writes in New York Times (October 9, 2002):

The more time you spend in India the more you realize that this teeming, multiethnic, multireligious, multilingual country is one of the world's great wonders - a miracle with message. And the message is that democracy matters. ... This truth hits you from every corner. ...50 years of Indian democracy and secular education, and 15 years of economic liberalization, produced all this positive energy. [14].

Dan Burton, who visited India in March 2006 [15], appears to have changed [16].

UK, which had long tolerated the Kashmiri Militants (actually Mirpuri) in UK, encoutered a series of bomb attacks in London (21 July 2005 London bombings), the majority of terrorists were of Pakistani/Kashmiri origin. [17]. Impact of this is yet to be seen.

Khatri

Hello. An editor posted a message in Wikipedia talk:Notice board for India-related topics regarding some edit-wars in the article Khatri. I must clarify that I myself do not know anything about the origin of Khatri. However I found some offensive comments regarding the origin in the article and so - I did not delete - searched for the verifiability of those comments. I found out that the slokas quoted from Manu Smriti were really there in a translated version of the book, available in the web . this link will take you to the book, see chapter 10. So I supplied reference to the offensive comments and later, modidied the tone. However, IMO these comments should not be deleted as they are well referenced. Please try to cite some other source that substantiate the other view of origin strongly. (In fact I supplied some reference that support the popular view). I saw that those comments were deleted not by you, but by some anons. But you "restored proper version", that's why I write this to you. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:50, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Ok, now I understand. There is some discrepancies in the translation. However, the thing becomes even more critical! In that case, you can revert the changes I made in the origin. Even better will be a mention of the translation controversy. You can tell that while the translated Manu Smriti indicated that "Kshattri" are born "in the inverse order of the castes" etc, there is dispute regarding the translation as the original word is "क्षत्ता" that does not translate into khatri. You can cite the shloka in Sanskrit. In that case, anyone who will be trying to make some offensive comment can be stopped. As you are in possesion of the original sanskrit version and are quite knowledgable in this regard, I feel this editwar can be ended with this compromise. This will be beneficial for the article. Castes and Tribes of the Punjab

Hi. I am asking your opinion on this festering dispute that has developed between myself and Satbir Singh since the past few days.

The facts of the matter are like this:

I created a template called Castes and Tribes of the Punjab with a view to studying the caste and tribal groups that exist in what was the ancient Punjab region (Punjab (Pakistan), Punjab (India), Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). My intention, unlike any Ibbetsons, Todds or Cunninghams was to study these groups from a purely anthropological perspective sans any controversy so that people visiting this portal would get to know about the huge mosaic that my province (I am a Punjabi) is.

I started with a few groups. But soon enough the groups began to increase. For the sake of brevity, I grouped them under Categories. As the template evolved, I learnt not to name any category speculatively.

The final categories were:

Brahmin groups. Dalit groups. Jat clans. Khatris and other groups. Rajput clans. Shaikhs and other groups. Tarkhans and other groups. Others (groups to which i could not attribute any specific status). In the last (Others), I also included groups such as Kamboj, Khasa, Ahir and Gujjar. However, Satbir Singh separated them and bunched them under a new category called "Surviving Ancient Kshatriya Tribes".

Since that day, a revert war has been on between the two of us. According to Satbir, these groups such as the Ahirs (the ancient Abhiras), the Gujjars (Gurjaras), the Khas (the Khasas), the Kamboj (Kambojas) and Yadav (Yadavas) are ancient Kshatriya tribes mentioned in a number of ancient Sanskrit texts.

My own personal opinion is that all this is true. However, some points must be noted:

The Varna System is a topic subject to a lot of controversy and dispute. I have been noticing this in recent weeks. Pages such as Khatri, Rajput, Kayastha and Bhumihar have been vandalised because many people don't agree with the Varna status of these groups. If the Ahirs, the Gujjars, the Khasaa, the Kambojas and the Yadavas are Kshatriya groups, then so are the Rajputs, Jats, Khatris, Tarkhans et al. I did not create a category entitled "Kshatriya groups" in the first place because I knew I was treading on soft ground. All the above mentioned castes claim Kshatriya status. But we all know, how disputable these claims are. The rigmarole that is the Varna System is known to us all. For example, the Jats, who in the Vedic and Mythological periods were workers should be placed in the Shudra Category under the Varna System. But many Jats clans consider themselves the equal and perhaps the superior of Rajputs as adhrents of Kshatriya Dharma. My own caste, the Khatris and related groups such as Aroras claim Kshatriya status. But we have seen on the Khatri page as to what became of that claim. Ahirs, Gujjars and Yadavs are considered to be OBCs in most Indian states inspite of their being the descendants of ancient Abhiras, Gurjaras and Yadus. There is a controversy raging on the Yadav page presently if I am not wrong, on the status of the caste. Taking all these points into consideration and being aware of the fact that there are users (say Sanjay Mohan and Holywarrior, who have caused great disputes on various caste pages, I proposed categories such as "Kambojs and related groups" (Kamboj, Kamboja, Kamboh and Khasa) and "Gujjars and realted groups" (Ahirs, Gujjars, Dhangars and Bakarwals). But Satbir Singh and another user named Sze cavalry01 objected to it. They returned to "Ancient Kshatriya Tribes". I did a little compromise by making it "Ancient Warrior Tribes", which I later realised would also be POV. Therefore, I changed it to just "Ancient Tribes" - A completely unspeculative term.

However, Satbir Singh does not agree. He calls it a "gross suppression of known historical facts", "a crime against history" and "a political agenda" and has termed me a "Vandal". I have put forward my points. But both of us are yet to agree.

I have fighting a revert war with him for almost a week now. Have a look at the template's history page and Satbir Singh's talk page to get a complete idea of the whole fracas.

This fight has become downright silly. I surely don't expect myself to spend my time, money and energy on such a silly matter. And I am sure neither does the other party.

As of now, Administrator Shresth has protected the page on my request. He has also asked that the dispute be discussed on the talk page of the template and a consensus be reached. Yourself and anybody else you know who has an interest in the Punjab, please come and express your opinion on the talk page.

Potential rev of Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America

Hi Vikram. As you probably know, Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America is protected due to the recent edit war; the protection will remain until the dispute has been resolved. That particular edit seems to have consensus from both Bakaman and Borntorebel, but I'd like to get the broadest consensus possible before moving ahead with it.

I know you're interested in FeTNA's position on the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, and I'd particularly appreciate your help researching that. I'd appreciate it if you could help track down any additional FeTNA statements, particularly any pre-1994, as well as 1996-2004.

I am sorry I did not respond to your questions earlier.

Why you're conflating support for the Tamil side in the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict with support for the LTTE. Is it your opinion that there does not exist any Tamil anti-Sinhalese / anti-Government-of-Sri-Lanka positions outside the LTTE?

There have been (although LTTE has been successful in largely eliminating them) other Sri Lankan Tamil groups, who have fought for the rignts of the Tamils there. However FeTNA has been associated with LTTE. FeTNA has never been critical of LTTE's murders of Sri Lankan Tamils opposed to LTTE.

Why you're so attached to the paragraph-length description of the February 2006 FeTNA textbook press release, which is longer than the entire rest of the textbook section, and almost three times as long as the entire descripton of FeTNA's position on the issue.

FeTNA's role in the California Textbook controversy was quite significant. Its perspective needs to discussed in detail.

These three are frequent vandals:

• User:IPKapoor inserts "The Khatris are an Asura community"
• User:SanjayMohan: inserts "Punjabi Khatris are a community of the Asuras"
• User:MSKhanna inserts "The Khatris are Sudra community" or "The Khatris are a despised community"

I have had all of these people blocked, and the page locked so that only registered users can edit it. Out of interest - I am curious, and have a few questions for you, which I hope you don't mind answerring, if they aren't insulting (they aren't meant to be!)...

1. Asura is a curse erm, meaning demon, yes?
2. What does 'Sudra' mean? Is it a curse word also?
3. Why is redirecting to Kshatriya (or something like that, I can't remember the spelling) - Why is that bad?

No, don't worry, I have nothing against you or Khatris. I am sure that Khatris and Aroras had almost identical backgrounds and are basically the same caste. Indeed, the Arora article says "Aroras...like their Khatri brethren, have also prospered because of strong work ethic," and talks more about Arora-Khatri links. What I do not support is IP User 81.149.27.200 making mincemeat of facts and history, all coming together to assert Khatri superiority and to say that Aroras were always Vaishya caste. ie. these types of edits. About religion, Khatris are not Muslims, but many Khatris converted to Islam to become Punjabi Shaikhs and that needs mention. Similarly, the Arora article states that many Aroras converted to Islam became Khoja Shaikhs. Also, ideas that clans like Malhotra originated from demi-gods like Yudhistira (who incidentally had no children by the end of the Mahabharata) are completely flawed and cannot be allowed to stand. I have no doubt you are knowledgeable on the topic, but as per Wikipedia:Reliable sources, Wikipedia:Verifiability and [[Wikipedia:Citing sources}}, I am obliged to put tags wherever things are not sourced. That is, don't you agree, better than deleting all unsourced material which is what I should be doing? I do not consider Aroras and Khatris to be adversaries, but I'm just making some edits based on observations and a long-standing edit war with an IP user who has a superiority complex.
