UPDATE: After a 6 week absence, I have finished moving (sorta) and now have an Internet connection again. My new home is near Williamsburg, VA, where I will continue to help care for my Mom (87) and another disabled family member. Our new home is wheelchair accessible and much newer smaller and more manageable than our old one. Thanks to all who helped with my various projects while I was off line. Yesterday I received my invitation to the Po'pay statue dedication in Washington DC, on September 22. I am now trying to figure out how to do the trip, and perhaps visit Richmond in the process. I am also trying to decide whether to spring for a book, "Richmond's Monument Avenue" (ISBN:0807826073) by Driggs, Sarah Shields; Wilson, Richard Guy; Winthrop, Robert and decided that you might have good insights into all these areas. Oh yes, as far as renaming Monument Avenue, "Traveller Avenue" I think that I learned that the Frenchman who did the Lee statue in Richmond refused to use Traveller as a model for the horse, thinking him to be not noble enough, or something, and opted for some Arabian instead. OK, Let's give writing a new article on Spokane Trophy a try. The advice which follows is MY way of researching to come up with content, which may or may not be as much in compliance with Wikipedia Style guidelines as you will choose to be (no one is perfect, but we strive to comply).
1. Look at the article I collaborated with User:Slambo on called Autorack. Then look at the same article, which was specially marked up with tons of writing tips by User:Niteowlneils. The Annotated Article for Autorack can be found at Wikipedia:Annotated article. This is a very valuable way to see how to write an article in an attractive style and keep track of the information, etc.
2. I suggest you join Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships. On Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships, you should let them know that you are writing your first article on Spokane Trophy. The members will be knowledgeable about similar topics and will probably be glad to help you with good ship-related article.
OK, on to your new Spokane Trophy article.
3. First, you asked how I do it, I like to work on content (ie text first), and then seek images after story is more or less in first draft form.
Rather than ask for permission to copy stuff from a single source, we want to use multiple sources for Wikipedia articles, and then compile the factual information into an original article. A single source would probably require the kind of permission you requested (and didn't get). Therefore, in addition to learning what I can from the link you provided, the next thing I would do is determine some more information about the subject. To do that, I will do a Google search, a Yahoo search, and sometimes more searches (ie MSN, Altavista, Ask Jeeves, Lycos, etc.) depending upon the amount of hits and quality of web sites I can find. NOTE: I have now checked as described and there are multiple sites with the lost of text information you can use to create your content. ::NOTE: I found good data on Google and Yahoo searches on the words: Spokane Trophy! Follow up on multiple hits,a nd consider what seem to be the more credible sources.
4. By using multiple sources, you do not need their permission to obtain facts which you will use, so long as you are not copying en masse and verbatim (exactly worded) their text. You should keep track of where the items of specific information comes from, so you can cite your sources. However, unless you are using a single source to bets make a point, I find listing the sources at end of article is usually sufficient. If quoting an entire sentence or two, or if you feel that the source is particularly important, then a footnote for the source right after the information is presented can be done by putting the URL in single brackets.
For instance (I am making this up), since the following is obviously an opinion for which we would want to know the source. If the content in your article made the statement which follows: TEXT: According to the local residents, the Spokane Trophy is more greatly valued by people from the south side of Spokane than anywhere else. END TEXT, Then I would immediately attribute that statement (again a fictitious source) by pasting the URL of the source in single brackets, which would end up like this: [3]
5. Remember that your personal opinion is not a source, although you may find sources with which you agree,a nd you can certainly present the independently sources information you agree with.
6. Only after doing the text content, would I consider images. That gets trickier, and you will also need to follow WP guidelines there, or let other users help spice up your story with images, if that is not your strong point. In this instance, US Navy images are generally public domain for WP purposes, and that may be a good source for you, so your task may be a bit easier on this article than some for other subjects. Personally, I have found it too hard to get permission for images not already in public domain or otherwise OK for use in WP without specifically getting permission, so if I can't find something it is OK to use without asking, I'd let someone else worry about images. If you write your initial article well with enough interesting content, other contributors will read it,a nd begin enhancing it with content and often pictures.
7. I use ieSpell (a free program) to help avoid putting content out with bad spelling, although others will surely come behind you and take a whack at poor grammar, spelling, etc., assuming your article is of interest. I've found that almost anything I write an article on for WP has someone else interested in it. That's part of the fun, because then i learn even more as I watch changes.
8. Add internal links for words in your content which have Wikipedia articles. This will help other writers find your article as well and add to the collaborative effort to refine your article.
9. As you probably know, click on the red link Spokane Trophy and begin the article, saving it with the edit summary "New Article" in the box at the bottom. Your first effort may not be outstanding, but others will help, and you'll get better as you go.
I now have some info on your subject, so one you start the article, I will try be among those to help spruce it up. If you get your feelings hurt easily, WP may not be for you, as others will surely edit your work and may chose to say somethings differently. However, I have found that most changes to articles I begin have been improvements, and what is best for the quality of Wikipedia is more important than my ego or personal preferences. Occasionally, I need to remind myself of that, and maybe you will too.
You have some images in the category Category:Images with unknown source. Images in this category can and are being deleted as we speak. You should provide sources for your images in there, if you still want Wikipedia to be able to use them. You can see the list of images you've uploaded here. After second thought, I am generally in agreement with the multiple arcticles (I even entered a stub for First Landing State Park) -- except for Cape Henry Memorial which I think would be better to merge with and redirect to Colonial National Historical Park -- but I am not going to lose any sleep over it. By the way, while looking up info on the memorial, the NPS Website states that the lighthouse is NOT part of the Memorial nor Colonial NHP, although APVA administers the National Park "Passport" stamp for the memorial. I am going to make appropriate changes to the texts of those sites (including removing the lighthouse image from the memorial), but after today, I will probably move onto other interests. Thank you for taking the time to clean up the W&M website. It is a little wordy, but the underlying accuracy is intact.
The #6 ranking you were curious about is indeed accurate (and has been for the last few years) as is the part about W&M being named the "hottest small public university" -- here are the verifying links.
PS -- I am a history buff and am not biased about W&M, it's pre-Revolutionary history is unique and very important in the history of university education in the US.
What I was challenging was the statements, In 2006, ... ranked (etc.). Since 2006 isn't even here yet, the statemenents seemed suspect. I was able to determine that both claims were regarding the 2005-2006 school year, so I adjusted the wording to reflect that. Perhaps in the collegiate community, a school year is referred to by only the ending year, much as Class of '06. Anyway, I think the facts themselves give W&M lots of bragging rights, and I hopesomeone will tone down the POV rhetoric such as "much-revered", etc., which tends to detract from the credibility of the article. I am an adult diagnosed with ADHD, who coaches adult ADHDers, is attempting to form an adult ADHD support group in my area, and participates actively in face-to-face and online ADHD groups.
I think it is a mistake to present "Adult ADD" as a separate entry. "ADD" is an obsolete term, that warrants no treatment different from other obsolete terms.
"Adult ADD" corresponds to no external official category and little external reality. ADHD is an officially recognized disorder that can occur in children and adults. The battles about whether adults can have ADHD (or its DSM predecessors, ADD and MBD) and the diagnostic criteria, though certainly worth mentioning, are officially over, though they may recur for DSM-V.
The many substantive controversies concerning ADHD, including those about whether ADHD is a single disorder, how much of it is genetic, how it should be diagnosed, whether it is over- or under-diagnosed or over- or under-medicated generally or in specific populations (including adults), which non-medication therapies are effective, which medications are effective, whether ADHD is a real disorder, and even whether ADHD might not be a good thing [Hartmann and others], need to be located in a single article that is located under a term that is generally accepted, where Wikipedia users would most likely expect to find it. ADHD is that term.
I would be happy to work with you to try to improve the "ADHD" article by merging "Adult ADD" into it.

I do not necessarily disagree with your points, but, beside the size issue in the main ADHD article, another reason the adult article was started was that adult issues where frequently deleted or minimized in the overwhelming interest in ADHD in children. I have heard unconfirmed reports that ADHD in adults will be more specifically addressed in the next Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. I recently read in the news that adults who are taking meds for the condition have increased by 400% in past ten years. The children, children, children and hyperactivity emphasis ADHD gets publicly and in WP detracts from the adult aspect, which is much less well-known.
I personally feel the separate article increases public awareness and that of persons who may be undiagnosed and suffering. A lot of us have met that last criteria.
If you cannot live with the current separate article, what about a compromise? Perhaps we can revamp the adult article, removing a lot of the duplicate material and condense it into a much shorter one, referring readers to main article ADHD? Keep the external links which are to adult-related sites. And join the edit wars on the ADHD article on behalf of adults.
Also, I urge you to look into the Yahoo group for adults and get on the email list for messages. It is growing and there may be additional support for your efforts to be found there. The link is: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/aadd/
One final thought. Web search engines such as Google and Yahoo search are now getting lots of hits on the current adult article, which increases public awareness. Merging the article will largely destroy this value we have accomplished.
I would like to see input from other editors before we take such a drastic measure as a merge.
Since you primarily work on VA. You might be interested in this Virginia State Highways. I created that after I created the WV version based on the US Highway Template. When working on some of the WV highways that VA had shared numbers with it seem logical. Like VA 259 and WV 259, they are really the same highway. I need to create a MD Highway template.
He destroyed hours of work on the WV Template and the highways. Converted everything to a list that was harder to Navigate. Wikipedia:Templates for deletion WV is near the top, and VA is near the bottom. Not sure what these guys are thinking the Template is much easier to navigate. Could use some voting in favor of keeping it. Thanks

I was working the Template to make it better. I had put in the existing entries, tighed in the connectors that shared numbers with WV. Then I was going to pair it down. I ended up off the WV and VA road stuff into some French and Indian War Forts and just hadn't gotten back to it. When I did I found all this stuff going on.

Some sub categories might be a good idea.

I have been working on some French and Indian War British Forts in WV, such as Fort Ohio. They are relavent to UK and US history. We are not supposed to us two stubs, but to be accurate you need to, a US-UK-colonial-hist-stub would solve that problem, and these suggested stubs will define the era that the historical place or event belongs in. It will give it more context.

Wikipedia:Categories for deletion I added the list for deletion since the table is easier to navigate. This really shows the problem of an open system. That is what is compeating against the template. The template shows up on each highway entry, the list makes them goto another page to continue. VA 895 was the interesting one in your list. I created this today Interstate Highways in West Virginia which I based off the CA one that I made when I split then Interstates and the US Highways out of the CA State Highways. I started modifing List of U.S. Highways in West Virginia to a similar look, but some sheilds are missing and I have to make them. I also put all the states info into this one Interstate 268(Proposed) I have a meeting with WVDOH coming up and will see if they are any further along. I also had to repair Corridor H (Appalachian Development Highway System), because a guy deleted the History because it came from the state, which is Public Domain. Thanks for the heads up. I think I fixed what you were talking about. I think the trick was that you were using the pipe character (|) to try to create subcategories but that's not how to make subcategories. If you want Category:First Families of Virginia to be a subcategory of of Category:Virginia history you have to create both categories and then put the category label (Category:Virginia history) on the subcategory that you want to be a subcategory (Category:First Families of Virginia) ) ditto for the category DAR. yikes - this is a tough one - to start out with. I have not found the sculptor during my first go-'round but all is not lost, yet. While driving through Tennessee two weeks ago or so I stoped at so book store in some now forgotten town and picked up a book on Scandinavian History that was mostly illustrated by art. It exciting that you heard back from the expert. On images, works of local and most state government employees in the US are not automatically in the public domain. You might get lucky on the Wikimedia commons, thats where I found a picture for your Govenors Palace article, or you could try flickr- anthing there with a creative commons licence that allows commerical use is fine for use on Wikipedia. I also just learned that Kodak Kodacrome is no longer developed except at two places in the universe. They have to to be sent there, so my pictures fron Richmond are mostly on hold. A couple of things. First, I just saw your user-created image (Image:Jackson Valley Campaign Part1.jpg) and wanted to compliment you. What a nice piece of work~ Should you find the time, we could use a much simpler one in the Historic Triangle article, showing Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown, and the Colonial Parkway which links them. I also wanted you to know that we were able to determine from multiple sources that William Mahone's middle name was Thomas. He apparently, chose to not use it, and those writing of him have respected that. However son, his William T. Mahone Jr. used the middle initial and name, and it is fairly well documented through Mahone family sources. I completed my relocation this summer to a rural portion of James City County near Williamsburg. Although we will be unpacking for years, the slightly milder climate and the much more bucolic surroundings are a welcome improvement from our longtime home in busy Richmond. Lastly, if you like the "Talk Box" on my user and talk pages, I know how to make one quickly for you. It really helps when people leave messages. Try it, you'll like it. Just let me know.

I actually draw the maps by hand, sometimes with the aid of tracings from history books. Are you asking for a map that shows modern roads and things like Navy yards or just the terrain and those cities? (The latter is relatively simple if something like http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mgg/topo/state2.pl?region=va.jpg is used as a base.) Do you know the trademark or the name of the manufacturer of the shuttle buses of the Wiki Wiki shuttle line used between terminals of Honolulu International Airport?
The bus line is operated by Airport Group International, and the buses are owned by the State of Hawaii. Photos are available here:

I thought so as well, and another bus enthusiast has confirmed. It is a Chance (model RT-52). The RT-52 was an early product. Chance Coach Inc., was later manufacturer of the American Heritage Streetcar trolley-replica bus and the low floor OPUS small and mid-size transit bus. Changed its name to Optima Bus Corp. Looks good! I think the vote will be keep. If I had anything to add, it would be maps of streets and rail, a GRTC logo, words about the chesterfield link bus, and maybe somehting about bicycle trails (isn't there some movement to put bike lanes in or something?).
