Barnstars are surprise gifts of appreciation for exceptional but unpredictable work. There's no telling when someone will feel like giving one, they're just tokens of random glee we pass around when inspiration strikes. My advice: keep learning, trying new things, doing great work, talking to others, finding ways to contribute... and barnstars will follow! Also, making a habit of recognizing others' great work when you see it is a great step (not to give so that you receive, but because it's part of being an excellent member of this community, and makes us all happier and more productive).
