Wikidata short descriptions edit

@MasterMatt12: Reminder that the wikidata short description is not the same as the local Wikipedia one. A local description needs to be added in these cases, either imported from the wikidata one, or written fresh. This is regarding these edits ([1],[2],[3]). Well done adding short descriptions to all 1000 top viewed pages in November 2022! I am currently pulling the data for January 2023 and am expecting to have it populated on the page within the next few days. I am also working on a bot that will check once or twice per day and auto-remove entries in the list that have had short descriptions added so you don't have to manually do it. I don't have an ETA on this, however. Uhai (talk) 22:17, 2 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Super awesome, thanks to everyone to contributed! That bot is a great idea, looking forward to seeing the new list. Thanks for all your help making this query request happen! — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 01:12, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
List for January 2023 is now available. Uhai (talk) 17:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
In case it helps, I run User:Certes/Reports/Top 1000 pages lacking short descriptions each week. It's a much shorter list because the inclusion criterion (apart from having no SD) is being in the 1000 most-viewed articles regardless of SD status, a much higher threshold than the 1000 most-viewed SD-less articles. Bot now in testing edit

The bot that automatically removes completed entries from the list is now in live testing on the page. It will run at 04:22 and 16:22 UTC every day. If you can, please avoid removing entries from the list from now on (I'm sure you'll be happy to avoid having to do this, anyway), so it can be tested effectively. If you see it do weird stuff, feel free to revert it and ideally let me know. Thanks! Uhai (talk) 11:03, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

That's amazing! — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 15:21, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
The bot definitely makes editing much easier! However, because the bot only removes completed entries twice a day, there is sometimes a buildup of articles that have been edited but have yet to be removed by the bot, and editors have to go through the whole list to find the unedited ones. Perhaps in the future, when the bot has been fully tested, it could remove entries more frequently, or have a user interface that allows editors to activate the bot each time they finish editing. Fully agree. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 16:35, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback; I agree with you. The bot is working well thus far and isn't disruptive, so, in the interest of better usability, I will go ahead and increase the frequency to hourly for now until I get yelled at. This doesn't completely solve the issue of buildup of finished articles appearing in the list, but there are other solutions I can try for the bot that will improve things, they just will require more development effort. Importing edit

@Entranced98: You frequently import wikidata short descriptions, but some of these aren't ideal. Please consider for a bit longer whether a more useful description could be written. This includes importing some very short descriptions (Actress [4]) when longer ones would be more preferable. For example, you imported "English, from 1707 British, possessions in North America up to 1776" at New England Colonies, which is confusing and difficult to read. Or, "American teacher" at Jennifer Fichter. Being a teacher is not why she was notable so this isn't the best way to say what she was. Thanks. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 15:54, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Any more? edit

@Uhai Could we have another list, please? The page still shows June, which was completed several weeks ago. MichaelMaggs (talk) 08:36, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@MichaelMaggs: July 2023 data is now available. Uhai (talk) 11:10, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Top 3000 is perfect. MichaelMaggs (talk) 11:12, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Needs an update, please? edit

@Uhai Hallo, it's late February, the current list is labelled January, and most of the items I click on have already got a Short Description (sometimes pretty dreadful, but that's another story). The note says that completed items are removed every hour, but this doesn't seem to be happening. Thanks for providing this helpful list, but an update would be very useful! PamD 09:33, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@PamD Hello, the list will always use the view counts from the previous month; the February data will be populated in the early hours of March 1 UTC. I'm not seeing what you're seeing regarding completed items; it looks like everything in the list is uncompleted with the bot having updated the list within an hour of your post. Could you provide an example of something you're seeing in the list that shouldn't be there? Thanks. Uhai (talk) 17:22, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Uhai Hallo, I can't see any problem items right now, but I note that you said the bot had updated the list just after my message. Examples I found on the list which had poor SDs which I improved are Hut 8 and Operation Tiger (1994), and several other items in my contribution list around the same time as my message. There were also the unremembered ones I clicked on from the list and found had already got good SDs. Glad it's now OK, I must have just picked a bad time. PamD 23:40, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@PamD: Hey, those 2 examples you posted were you overriding wikidata short descriptions. Wikidata descriptions are not the same as enwiki ones. Articles with wikidata descriptions but not enwiki ones are not considered "completed" and are thus not removed from the list. The differences are noted here: WP:SD-VS-WIKIDATA. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 23:46, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@PerfectSoundWhatever@Uhai But I thought the list, and the project, were supposed to show articles with no SD at all, rather than also including those with an SD created from Wikidata? PamD 14:26, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@PamD: Shortdesc helper shows you Wikidata descriptions on the page but they aren't actually there. What you're seeing aren't SDs created from wikidata, but descriptions that are only on wikidata. Enwiki descriptions and wikidata ones are completely different things, the tool just shows you the wikidata one to help you. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 14:30, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@PerfectSoundWhatever Ah, thanks, I think that makes sense ... will have another go at SDs some time, am currently on a WP:FEB24 session. PamD 14:48, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Article ranks edit

Could, in a future edition of the bot, be able to list the assessment of an article next to its name? It would help to illustrate which articles need descriptions more than others. Thanks for the amazing resource, Uhai! -1ctinus📝🗨 15:54, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is something I could add, although I did some analysis a while ago and found a large number of articles that had conflicting assessments between Wikiprojects. I think there has been some work done to fix this but I'm not 100% sure. It wouldn't be difficult to add except deciding which assessment to use in the event there are conflicting ones.
