Assassination

Assassination is typically applied to a prominent person. John Saunders was a junior police officer, still on probation, and around the same age as Bhagat Singh. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:25, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

PS You could write: "In 1928, Singh and his associates fatally shot a British junior police officer, John Saunders, mistaking him for the British police superintendent James Scott, whom they had planned to assassinate, and who they believed was responsible for the death of Indian nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai. Scott had ordered a lathi charge in which Rai was believed to have been injured. Singh and his associates also shot dead an Indian police constable who came to the aid of the dying Saunders." The reason why I prefer to use "murder" is that, according to the sources, Saunders who was riding a motorcycle was first shot by an associate of Singh. After he fell, and after his assailants discovered their error, Singh pumped four or five more bullets into the injured Saunders. We could use:

• wikt:murder - a loaded word, mainly for involving relatively unknown people and usually for personal/petty reasons.
• wikt:assassination - a more technical term, in addition to what you said, also has to have political or religious reasons.
• killing - the most neutrally and almost weightless word, isn't there in the Words to Watch but almost like the case of WP:SAID.

Here we have an officer in authority (okay, now you're saying junior, so we're threading on this part being disputable) and being killed due to an obvious political motive. I'm thus more inclined to use assassination. I'm more or less fine with any of them, IMO no need to get sources to back up this wording. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:02, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Another thing: remember what I you to do about the lengthy lead first statement about that DYK you created at WT:INB? Same issue with both Bhagat Singh and SCB. Singh (...was an Indian nationalist whose participation in acts of dramatized political violence against the British in India, and subsequent arrest and execution at age 23, turned him into a hero and martyr in the popular folklore of the Indian independence movement.) and Bose ( was an Indian nationalist whose defiant patriotism made him a hero in India, but whose attempt during World War II to rid India of British rule with the help of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan left a troubled legacy.). It's just too long...yes, you've tried to put the main notable aspects of the subject, but we can stick to just "was an Indian independence activist." Put the discussion about them immediately after. I'm pretty sure assassination cannot be used in a case of mistaken identity in which an officer on probation is shot by accident in place of the police chief. If authors use it, they're making a mistake. Can't summarize Bhagat Singh with one lead sentence, "... was an Indian independence activist." It is too vague, too inaccurate. It is the same with "revolutionary." I have reduced Bhagat Singh somewhat, but violence and folklore are an essential part of his story. In controversial subject topics, creating Simple Wikipedia-like lead sentences cause just as many violations of Wiki rues as do overlong sentences. In less controversial subjects, such as Gandhi or Mandell Creighton, both of whose leads I have written, I don't have any such issues. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 01:07, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

And what is the point of referring me to Wiktionary, which in any case is not a reliable source, and then editorializing, "a loaded word, mainly for involving relatively unknown people and usually for personal/petty reasons?" Where is that written in the Wiktionary entry? The two leading dictionaries in the English language say no such thing. Murder (n), OED: "The deliberate and unlawful killing of a human being, esp. in a premeditated manner;" Webster's Unabridged: "the crime of killing a person under circumstances precisely defined by statute: such as, ... a first-degree murder that deserves either capital or severe punishment because of being willful and premeditated, being committed with atrocity or cruelty (as by poisoning, starvation, mayhem, or torture), being committed in the course of the commission of a serious felony (as arson, burglary, or kidnapping), or being committed after lying in wait for the purpose of killing the victim." Was only trying help. I made it clear above that I felt all those were really minor and just suggestions. Really no need to take me on trial for that. To be fair, I didn't even use wikt but my in-built OS dictionary, I just don't like copy-pasting definitions here and I don't see any major disagreement in the definitions from all three of them. Help on Tamil Nationalism article.

Hi. This time, I want your help on this article. The India section of this article doesn't look neutral and seems a bit biased. Although most part of this section is sourced, some claims made in this section highlight only part of what is mentioned in the source while some claims are somewhat misleading. @Vibhss: I've been a bit less active these past few weeks and can't do much on my own. Briefly spot-checking it: the section is a bit lengthy and can spot obvious blatant problems besides this para (In 1958, S. P. Adithanar founded..) being sourced to dubious references. Additionally over-reliance on Indian media rather than global ones or better quality sources (academic sources etc) on such a cross-country historical issue but this is probably needs more checking, just a REDFLAG alert. Disclaimer: I've also rarely touched Tamil-nationalism articles and this is just my two cents (paisas) on it.

Do you have anything specific in mind? I can tell you my thoughts on that. Else you're better off raising it on that article talk page (seems to be maintained by at least one experienced enough editor) and taking a stab at editing. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:54, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

And the South Western Ghats montane rain forests use it with italics, still confusing and probably needs to be made consistent (we probably don't have an interest in pursuing). Your post prompted me to rummage the history of the page. The section was written in 2006 or 2007 by Saravask and me, and originally titled, Flora and fauna. Here is an edit, mine, from 2007, and the shola is italicized! See here, however, sal, babul, etc are not. MOS:FOREIGNITALIC says do not italicize foreign words which appear in Merriam-Webster Online. Shola and sal do not appear but babul does. So, it's neither here nor there. The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]

Other changes:

• You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
• The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
• The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
• You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7]
• Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
• The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
• A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
• There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [11]

Future changes

• The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
• The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

Assesment

With the bifurcation of Bardhaman district in West Bengal on 7 April 2017, I have helped in developing two articles - Purba Bardhaman district and Paschim Bardhaman district. Both the articles were initially marked Stub, and now require reassessment. Kindly help. I am particularly keen on taking the Purba Bardhaman district article to that of a Good Article. Here's what I've found:

• In general for both:
  • History, Etymology pertinence: This is probably the main possible issue I've found in terms of content. Both detail almost the same general history about Bardhaman district. They're mainly repeating content, WP:CFORK comes to mind here. Since both article pertain to just the recently created districts, their history doesn't go beyond that strictly speaking. It has to be just in one place where it can be covered in detail and that should be the older undivided district article--assuming this area covers just this district and no other place. You know better, I'm unfamiliar with it.
  • Both the lead sections can be expanded per WP:LEADLENGTH: two or maybe even three paras enough.

• Purba Bardhaman district
  • Can some of the captions have links to the various subjects shown?
  • Excess low-level headers (====Katwa subdivision==== etc), just use regular list syntax. Headers needed only for, at minimum, multiple moderate sized-paras; not such stubby portions.
  • Fauna section no relevant links as compared to the others

• Paschim Bardhaman district
  • Divisions here can be put into list form; fits the exceptions for WP:USEPROSE (like how you did the above article).
  • Remove gallery and put the Commons link below per WP:IG and since there's a little space left for one or two, consider maybe choosing from there.

Both are definitely C, but for B would need some work and moreover, I can't give it that detailed review now. What I highlighted above in my point "*In general for both:" would be something to focus on. I think the problem here is that both these articles have a quite limited WP:SCOPE, being districts (they're usually more administrative, less covered by sources, less distinct culturally etc than a city or a state) and even worse, they're recently created. The most important sections would be those which make it differ from the main old article and relevant to its recent history; so even the newly added "Literary traditions" mainly talks about historical figures referring to the old main region like the History section. Thus it should just cover the content related to administration (Demographics, Divisions, Geography) provided they're specific to only the newly formed districts and distinct to each of them.

I made it C but you can too, anything lower than A class can be self-assessed (WP:ASSESS) and don't need a formal review. Be sure to remove the |reassess=y part when done. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 03:42, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

I noticed you have kept and defended dubious unscholary sources on that systematically introduce, rewrite and and legitimzie OPINION PRIMARY RESEARCH based unpublished (paid publishing) POV work such as I highlighted on Birbal. With due regard to right to privacy and benefit of doubt, yet to avoid any CONFLICT OF INTEREST, may I know if you are a MUSLIM (reason to defend and game the system)? As a self-disclosure, I am atheist, Im a scientist. I want to see NEUTRAL, INDEPENDENT, PEER REVIEWED SCHOALRY WORK and not junk being introduced. 2. Are you and user Drumutt are one and same person, two accounts used by same person (same IP address?), or two people working as buddies to game the system including introducing and legitimizing POV and then running off anyone who points it out with warnings? I am NOT YET accusing, apologies if what I am wondering is incorrect but I have to get to the bottom of it. I will not let Birbal POV vandalized biased subvious edits remain there, i have followed the due process of benefit of doubt to the edits then i read the text referenced, i identified th biased musliims PRIMARY RESEARCH POV been incorrectly and misleadingly attributed to a Hindu meenakhis while it in fact is UNSCHALRY NON-PEER-reviewed non-acceptable (not in the index of acceptable and respected publication) work of CM NAIM of either self-published or paid-published type of obscure publication. The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Provided resources are the sole property of the beneficiaries and should be used for the betterment of the movement.

If you're an active Wikimedian, and interested to receive support from this project, please apply. It will take around 10 minutes of your time, and will ask descriptive questions about your contribution to Indic Wikimedia projects.

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

• The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
• The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [15]
• Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [16]
• The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

• The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
• Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
• The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) {{reflist}} template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [17]

Project Tiger Writing Contest

In 2017 – 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and user groups from India, are piloting a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program will (a) support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and (b) sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

Phase (a) has been completed, during which active contributors were awarded laptops and internet stipends. Phase (b) will be a contest in which editors will come together and develop a writing contest focused on content gaps. Each month three individual prizes will be awarded to each community based on their contribution for the month. The prizes worth 3,000 INR, 2000 INR, and 1,000 INR, will be awarded to the top contributors for each month. The contest started at March 1, 2018, 0:00, and will end at May 31, 2018, 23:59 (IST). I wish I could say yes to that but unfortunately, "on a wikibreak indefinitely" still seems to aptly summarise my real life situation. Peer review newsletter #1

Introduction

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

• THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
• Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

With a bit of effort we can renovate the place to look like this!

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

• {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
• {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

Update #3: advertising

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has wrapped up most of their work on the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual diff tool. The team has begun investigating the needs of editors who use mobile devices. Their work board is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are fixing bugs and improving mobile editing.

Recent changes

• The Editing team has published an initial report about mobile editing.
• The Editing team has begun a design study of visual editing on the mobile website. New editors have trouble doing basic tasks on a smartphone, such as adding links to Wikipedia articles. You can read the report.
• The Reading team is working on a separate mobile-based contributions project.
• The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer supported. If you used that toolbar, then you will no longer see any toolbar. You may choose another editing tool in your editing preferences, local gadgets, or beta features.
• The Editing team described the history and status of VisualEditor in this recorded public presentation (starting at 29 minutes, 30 seconds).
• The Language team released a new version of Content Translation (CX2) last month, on International Translation Day. It integrates the visual editor to support templates, tables, and images. It also produces better wikitext when the translated article is published. [18]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Ugog Nizdast. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Allie Brosh

Hi there, thanks for your message about Allie Brosh. Looking at again, I think my tag was unwarranted and I will remove it. I'm sorry about that. I think my concerns were partly about the level of detail and activities of Brosh's that don't seem notable or connected to her work - for instance, participating in track; her surgery. Also, some stuff not referenced as far as I can see ("Brosh's online presence again got sporadic with a single tweet in November 2014"; "Brosh has been active on Reddit and likes it because it was the place where her first posts got popular"). And a couple of typos: "Brosh said she started her blog to avoid her college physics final wondered if people would like her work"; "In May 2013, she made a second post which was long and chronically her struggle and thoughts of suicide".
