March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Any interest in improving Hoosier cabinet?

Thanks for great work on Sneath Glass Company. In case of interest (or in case you can recruit some interested people), Hoosier cabinet could use some work. I've found some relevant references, including an academic book about the history of Hoosier cabinets that could help get somebody started on this. Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 21:00, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

Yes! However, it may take a while before I can get to it. I'm finishing up a too-long article on the 1st West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, that will be up for peer review and then GA. It is currently in User:TwoScars/sandbox2, but I will switch it over next week. I also plan to upgrade Fostoria Glass and have a picture or two to add to it. As info, the "collector's Hoosier Cabinet" in the Sneath article actually belongs to my cousin. If someone else wants to tackle Hoosier Cabinet before I am ready—that is OK. Otherwise, I will add it to my list. Do not worry, if I take on Hoosier Cabinet, it will not have 200 citations like in the cavalry regiments—hopefully 20 to 50. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Murano glass, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page American Indians (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

TwoScars/sandbox5

Hi. I think you may have created TwoScars/sandbox5 by accident. Perhaps you either meant to create a mainspace article under a different title (instead of "TwoScars/sandbox5") or meant to create User:TwoScars/sandbox5? Bennv3771 (talk) 03:44, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

I've moved it to the userspace under User:TwoScars/sandbox7 since "TwoScars/sandbox5" is clearly not an appropriate title for a mainspace article. Bennv3771 (talk) 03:52, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

WV in Am. Civil War edits

Hello, sorry to bother you again, but you are the only other active editor for WV Civil War pages. Mark McCain has been removing and adding material willy-nilly to the West Virginia in the American Civil War page. He's added corporals to the Notables list and removed Confederate generals. I just wanted to alert you. I will try to reverse some of his vandalism today. Thanks, Dubyavee (talk) 18:53, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

  • Thank you. Dubyavee (talk) 19:39, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
    • Hello TS, I heard from Peacemaker, I've decided I will just re-edit pages after he is done rather than be confrontational. He removed John Echols from WVians in the Civil War because he wasn't born in WV, but left in Benjamin Kelley, who was born in MA and lived in Philadelphia when the war started. He is trying to set WV history back to 1950. Anyway, here is an essay by a Canadian historian who is working on a new book on WV Civil War, but it won't be out for a few years. This is an essay he wrote for Ohio Valley History Journal, I thought you would find it interesting.

    • I looked at the 1st WV Cav. page, you are correct, I would put the number of MOH at 14. It's a case of a "reliable source" (which is cited twice) that is not reliable. Every other reference I've found on Google says Burns was in the Infantry, not Cav. I saw your note at the end of the article. I think he is very careless, he put the same "info" onto the WV in the Civil War page. Dubyavee (talk) 03:36, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

I will make some edits to the WV in the Civil War page and point out to him that the info on the MOH is incorrect. Mark Snell says that James Burns was in the 1st Inf., and I will look for other corroborating refs. Dubyavee (talk) 17:55, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

I made the change to the 1st WV Cav. page as well as changes to the WV in

the Civil War page. Dubyavee (talk) 21:36, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi TwoScars. MarkMcCain reverted my edit despite my showing that James Burns was not 1st Cav. Either he is not very perceptive or is deliberately twisting the facts. I think it would be alright if you reverted his edit, if I did it it would seem like an edit war. Dubyavee (talk) 18:18, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
Hello again. I took the most effective route and wrote an email to the WV Archives to tell them about the error. They are usually pretty good at correcting errors, so I think the easiest solution is to pull the reference out from under him. Dubyavee (talk) 20:08, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
The WV Dept. of Archives has corrected their list of MOH recipients and I corrected the article page to the correct number. Dubyavee (talk) 19:34, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I changed the lead to not have any citation and say the most of any West Virginia regiment—which agrees with GTM. If a book or newspaper article somewhere says this is the most of any regiment, or one of the highest of any regiment—that would be great to add that back in. TwoScars (talk) 19:49, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi TwoScars, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 01:37, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Thank you for your message; I do not have any suggestions for improvement. It may be that the C rating was too low and perhaps a B rating could be justified.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 09:17, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 8

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 5th New York Cavalry, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Army of the Shenandoah (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
