Some tips

Hey I always love to see somebody else who is interested in improving the pages of state legislators. Here are just some things you should know. All statements need a reference, the section title should be stuff like "political career" or "Oklahoma House of Representatives), bills should not be directly linked and you should instead find news coverage stating their position or vote on important legislation. Also an easy way to organize the article sections would be like the way Addo Bonetti is. I can't wait to see what you can do for Oklahoma pages in the future. I use to be really bad at editing and didn't even understand how to make a reference lmao. BTW here is a reference down at the bottom you can use as a template when you edit pages. Also @TulsaPoliticsFan: You should double check Oklahoma's state constitution on when a person takes office. For example, Dustin Roberts took office on November 17, 2010, not January 4, 2011. Canadian laws on enlistment in International Brigades in Ukraine

The Foreign Enlistment Act 1985 ( https://lois-laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/F-28/FullText.html ) is not nuanced or ambivalent to Canadians enlisting. The criminal offence is to enlist with a foreign entity at war with a friendly state, Section 3. In Section 11 on Recruiting, there are several individuals, including a former Liberal Member of Parliament who have been active supporting Canadians going overseas, Borys Wrzesnewskyj. (I will admit to having to copy and paste the man's name.)

There is no doubt of which side is friendly to Canada. Russia has been heavily sanctioned by Canada, while Ukraine has been supported in many ways since 2014, including military trainers and whole of government advisors. After the Russian invasion, Canada provided weapons, ammunition, and nonlethal aid by the planeload. Canada has the 2nd largest Ukrainian diaspora in the world. Therefore, please revert your edit to my post.

–Yes, the Foreign Enlistment Act 1985 makes it a criminal offense to enlist with a foreign entity at war with a "friendly state." However, the act does not define the term friendly state. The ambiguity in the term "friendly state" is the reason why the legality of enlisting is nuanced. While officials have made public statements in support of Canadians going overseas (Why the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine clearly says "Canada allows its citizens to enlist in the International Legion"), the ambiguity of the term "friendly state" has been cited as a point of concern among reliable sources. See this source. The removal of the clarification would be appropriate if the Canadian government clarified explicitly that Russia is officially not a "friendly state." note the political giving section for this page is relevant--as you know this was a huge issue in the primary with millions of dollars spent on ads about it. The Daily Caller is unreliable reporting--you can remove that source if you want but it is not referenced as reporting but to show the right wing media condemnation, which is an appropriate cite of such material per wikipedia guidelines. do you get the difference? the actual cite for the donations are to mainstream reputable outlets and to the FEC, which is obviosuly the gold standard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clowncar1 (talk • contribs) 00:37, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

WP:NOR says "Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published secondary sources and, to a lesser extent, on tertiary sources and primary sources."" In the section I removed there are two citations to the FEC which are actually WP:NOR issues; they are primary sources and we want to avoiding using primary sources in favor of secondary sources. Stringing them together with the WP:DAILYCALLER source is pretty close to WP:Synth and with a WP:Deprecated sources. The only favorable source is the Tulsa World article, which only references his 2013 donation, which I still included in the article but moved into the 2022 primary section. At the moment I have not taken enough time tostudy the RSs to be qualified to speak, so I thought it best just to remove the noise I had added to the talkpage. I am presently of "no opinion". @Minoa Just to clarify, you mean the edit removing the Highland Park parade shooting from the List of right-wing terrorist attacks?

So neither of the sources that were cited in the article really seem to make the terrorism claim, but both do make the right-wing claim. I would leave the edit removing it for now, but looking at the Highland Park parade shooting article there might be a better source there that does make both the right-wing and terrorism claim. In short, I don't think the two sources provided were good enough to justify re-adding it to the list, but if there is a source that clearly labels the attack terrorism then I think it could be re-added to the list. "Commission"

I saw you found the Houston B. Teehee article.

One detail I noticed in my sources was that Teehee served on the "Supreme Court Commission", also referred to as the "Supreme Commission"; however, I'm not clear as to what this commission actually was.

I initially thought it was the Oklahoma Judicial Nominating Commission, but that was only established in 1967, 14 years after Teehee's death.

@DragonflySixtyseven This is super interesting. I've never seen this commission mentioned before and if I had to guess it may be some sort of precursor to the current Judicial Nominating Commission. There are a few defunct state positions, commissions, and agencies in Oklahoma and not all of them have articles. I'll see if I can find some law review articles on the history of the Oklahoma Judiciary to help clear this up, but it may take me little bit. The University of Oklahoma and University of Tulsa law reviews are probably the most likely journals to have the answer to this question. Especially if you already checked the Oklahoma Historical Society's online resources and have not found mention of it.

I also thought maybe it was just another name for the Oklahoma Supreme Court, as this seems to indicate, but our list of justices of the Oklahoma Supreme Court doesn't include Teehee, and neither does it include John Jarman or Tom D. McKeown, who have both also been mentioned as having been appointed to the Commission. DS (talk) 15:37, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

@DragonflySixtyseven So after doing some research, I think I have an answer for you. The Oklahoma Supreme Court Commission was an commission that assisted the Oklahoma Supreme Court with writing opinions and handling cases. From reading a few law review articles about other states, they appear to have been more common in the 19th and early 20th century. Oklahoma hasn't had one since the 1950's from what I can tell. The commission would be created by the Oklahoma Legislature and be for a limited amount of time. The commission Teehee served on expired December 31st, 1930. The prior commission expired at the end of 1926. A new commission was created in 1927.

I found this summary in a local paper published in 1930, The legislature each two years has created a commission to assist the supreme court in handling a heavy docket. After opinions were prepared they passed conference of commissioners, then were passed by a court conference before being issued. Hope this helps! TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 23:54, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Probably, but it may take a little while to put together Oklahoma Supreme Court Commission as an article. I'm finishing up law school (and like Houston B. Teehee have to get admitted to the Oklahoma bar) so I'll have less time to edit the next few months. I don't think I'll be able to write this article in one sitting either so I'll have to figure out how to setup a draft article space. If I have to dig through newspaper archives to construct the whole thing it'll be pretty time intensive, but I do think it's probably writable. TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 02:43, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Category removal

Why have you been removing Category:Cherokee Nation (1794–1907) from articles about 19th Century Cherokee history? Is there a consensus that this category is not appropriate for many of the articles it was used in? Bneu2013 (talk) 12:35, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Well, Category:19th century Cherokee history is a subcategory of Category:Cherokee Nation (1794–1907) and normally we don't list every higher category and only list the most specific subcategory. I don't think I moved anything out of the Category:Cherokee just trying to move things to the best subcategory. If there is a specific page that you think should be in both categories feel free to re-add them to the category. TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 15:12, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

In most cases there would be no need to include both. However, I think some articles that are explicitly relevant to the original Cherokee Nation, such as Red Clay State Historic Park and New Echota should be included in both. Bneu2013 (talk) 02:22, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Fall in Lynn In Mary Baker Eddy wiki page

I see that the entire section on the Fall in Lynn has been removed. Everything is cited as to its source, often contemporaneous newspapers. In other historical wiki pages, like FDR's, I see newspapers cited routinely. What is the problem here. I am not clear. Metaphysical historian (talk) 01:18, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

@Metaphysical historian The problem is the newspapers were not really cited. They were listed as having existed and quoted, but no WP:inline citation was provided. Normally an old newspaper cited will be cited to an online newspaper archive (See Frederick Drummond or Randolph Murdaugh Sr., both articles cite 100+ year old newspaper coverage, but link to the archive for WP:verifiability) or they provide a note to were a physical copy of a non-online source can be found (See Winnie Branstetter footnote 7 which directs readers to a physical university's archive). We can quote and reference the newspaper stories that were originally listed, but someone needs to provide a citation so we can verify those stories are real and quoted accurately. It's not enough to say "according to the New York Times on April 15, 1888", you need to provide a link to the article in an archive or indicate were the information is from if its a non-online source. I see that the examples cited say "via Newspapers.com" but there are other old newspaper vendors (Newspaperarchive, Genealogybank, etc.) that require a subscription. Can I say "via . . ." and list them? I suppose I can figure out how to provide the link but am not sure someone who is a non-subscriber would be able to see it. Yeah, I prefer Newspapers.com just because I know how to use it and get free access through Wikipedia (If you have access to the Wikipedia library, you do to). Any other newspaper archive should be fine too though. Just add |via= to indicate what archive your using.

Also, keep in mind these sources are just news reports, and on the Mary Baker Eddy page scholarly sources that discuss these events may be given more weight (see WP:BESTSOURCES) than contemporary news reports. Some of the books cited on the Eddy page are available on archive.org. TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 03:49, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

Ugh. Apparently, LegiStorm pages are free access if you get to them via a Google search, as I did, but if you attempt to get to the URL directly, you get the show-me-the-money screen. My search was simple, something like "Joe Donnell" if you want to try to independently verify. Meanwhile, I will try to find a free alternative to the information tomorrow. If I'm not able to do it tomorrow, it probably will take me several days, as I expect to be minimally involved with WP over the long weekend. Structured data in Wikidata related to articles on Tribal politicians

Hi @TulsaPoliticsFan. I came across your work via some comments you've posted. I'm interested in and working on structured data within Wikidata as it relates to Tribes and Tribal Governments in the U.S. I'm also a citizen Cherokee Nation but living at-large; just getting to know some folks closer to CN lands. Two things:

1. I'll be looking to your articles on Tribal politicians as I hash through the relevant schemas and properties in Wikidata and may ping you with questions. My interests are in seeing more thorough representation of Tribes as we exist now in the Global Knowledge Commons, and your focus on documenting Tribal politics is a great contribution. I've also been thinking about better representation of Tribal legislation and legal decisions and wonder what you may be thinking in that regard.
2. Have you heard about the Gadugi Corps initiative launched by Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr.? I've been chatting some with Shawn Crittenden who's heading the task force working on that about engaging citizens and especially young people interested in data science and technology on digital volunteer work of various kinds. It might be interesting to think about how that engagement might include organizing hack-a-thons or similar engagements on Wikipedia/Wikidata/WikiSource/etc contributions.

Osiyo @Skybristol, good to meet you and if there is anything I can do to help feel free to reach out! I'm also an at-large citizen (living on the Muscogee Nation's reservation next door to home).

On your first point, my thinking on where I'd like to go with the tribal coverage has been less tribal legislation/legal decision and more tribal government. I've been wanting to write (but haven't started yet) articles for the Cherokee Constitution, Council of the Cherokee Nation, and Courts of the Cherokee Nation (with potentially Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation and District Court of the Cherokee Nation). My first thought is that legislation in the Cherokee Nation is going to probably have a shortage of sourcing (I've worked a little bit with Cherokee legislation as an attorney and it's hard to find non-primary sources which we'd need for a Wiki article), but there may be a few legal cases that could be significant enough for a Wikipedia page (Cherokee Nation v. Nash comes to mind; it has coverage in law reviews). But outside of biographies of tribal politicians (which btw, there isn't a single biography of a Cherokee freedman on Wikipedia yet; that needs to be fixed), I've been thinking more on expanding just general government pages: the constitution and three branches of government.

On your second point, I've heard a little, but haven't looked into it. If we had enough interested editors we could try and set up like a WikiProject Cherokee or maybe start a working group in Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America. Also, not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I'm a former teacher and would be both able and willing to teach a Wikipedia 101 class to Cherokees interested in learning how to edit. We could probably set up some sort of edit-a-thon too/instead if that's more what you're thinking. Women in Red does a monthly edit-a-thon for women biographies so I'm sure we'd be able to find editors for an indigenous edit-a-thon. But the short answer is yes, I'm interested in helping get more people involved in editing Wikipedia.

Also, you should definitely reach out to some other editors at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America. I've only been editing about three years, but some editors there have much more experience and will have ideas I don't. @Omnis Scientia, I made the category modeled off of the other subcategories for other states. The point of the subcategory is have a category for Jewish Americans from Oklahoma. I personally use this subcategory, and others like it, to improve biographies on minorities in Oklahoma. Unfortunately, the user who made those categories did a very poor job. They only had three to five pages, majority of them politicians. It seemed FAR easier to move the pages to the categories in Category:Jewish American politicians (or which ever was the appropriate category) than fill them up with thousands of pages.

Another issue is that there are no similar categories for other minorites. There is for Native Americans - which makes sense - but no similar categories for Latino/Hispanic Americans or African Americans or American Muslims. I checked all of this, to see if there was anything similar before I undertook the resorting of these categories.

What we can do is create a page like "History of the Jews in Arizona" for Oklahoma. The state has quite a history (and here) so it would make a sizable article. Since you are the expert (I'm assuming from your name!) I would defer to you on this. Omnis Scientia (talk) 21:41, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

@Omnis Scientia, I can agree that the other states categories were underdeveloped, but the Oklahoma subcategory has 13 articles and four articles in the politician subcat (with more historical state representatives that will go in the category once their articles are written). The Oklahoma subcategory does not meet the small category requirements for speedy deletion.

As you point out there is subcat for Native Americans by state, which I think is a good precedent. While there isn't an Category:American Muslims from Oklahoma, there is a Category:Christians from Oklahoma. Some ethnic/religious groups have by state subcats and others don't. That doesn't seem like a compelling reason to undo other people's sorting work and the incongruence seems like a good reason to go to categories for discussion.

I've been interested in working on getting a History of the Jews in Oklahoma article started, but haven't gotten to it yet. And I'd like to note that even if I wrote the article it wouldn't have the same utility function as the category (quickly finding all biographies associated with the state from the minority group).

I do want to note I totally believe you're acting in good faith. Also, I apologize if I come off defensive, but I spent a few hours finding all the biographies for the Oklahoma category. TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 22:18, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

So I don't know what enrollment for the Cherokee Nation looked like during what Kirby Brown calls the "dark age" of Cherokee Nation history between 1907-1970. I would feel comfortable considering them enrolled if they were on the Dawes Rolls. If they or an ancestor are not on the Dawes Rolls, I'd say no. If they're not on the Dawes rolls, but an ancestor is, then I am unsure. I know "it's probably a case-by-case thing" probably wasn't the answer you were looking for, but it's a bit of a contentious question.

Keep in mind there are arguments between the UKB and CN about whether or not the CN is a successor state or the same CN that's existed for centuries so there is some political implications to questions of citizenship during that timeframe that some editors may feel passionately about. @Bohemian Baltimore, So Old Settlers can mean a few things

1. Old Settlers as a political category exists between 1817 and 1839. They are citizens of the Western Cherokee tribe who were voluntarily removed to Arkansas in 1817. In 1828, the Western Cherokee were removed to present-day Indian Territory. They were a distinct political community from the Cherokee Nation in the east. When the Cherokee Nation (1794–1907) was deported to the Western Cherokee reservation, there was conflict between the Western Cherokee and "Eastern" Cherokee. Eventually, by 1839, the two factions officially merged into one political community by signing the Act of Union between the Eastern and Western Cherokees. James Mooney puts the infighting as lasting until 1846.
2. Old Settlers as an ethnic group (maybe more accurately a sub-ethnic group) refers to Cherokee people who identify as the descendants of the Old Settlers (citizens of the Western Cherokee). Most people who use the term mean this.

I'd support an article for Old Settlers (ethnic group) and Western Cherokee (Cherokee tribe in existence between 1817-1839).
