Want to help shape the future of the Wikipedia editing experience? edit

Hi ThorbyTech,

The Design Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation is currently seeking relatively newcomer Wikipedians for user studies about their experience with current editing tools and to test out some prototype editing tools. If you’re interested in helping to shape the future of editing on Wikipedia, we would love to have you participate! The study session will take approximately 30 minutes, maximum of 45 minutes.

The study will take place in the next couple weeks, and will require participants to have access to a webcam and microphone (or a laptop with built in cam & mic), with a quiet place to go for a research session. To participate, please email dchen[at]wikimedia.org and include the following information:

  • Username
  • Email where we can reach you
  • Your city or time zone
  • Best time to talk to you

Please let me know if you have any questions! Look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Daisy Chen

December 2016 edit

Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Spilosoma erythrophleps. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!   Thank you for your contributions. It seems that you may have added public domain content to one or more Wikipedia articles, such as Spilosoma rava. You are welcome to import appropriate public domain content to articles, but in order to meet the Wikipedia guideline on plagiarism, such content must be fully attributed. This requires not only acknowledging the source, but acknowledging that the source is copied. There are several methods to do this described at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Public-domain sources, including the usage of an attribution template. Please make sure that any public domain content you have already imported is fully attributed. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:45, 11 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Quotations edit

Hi Thorby, I saw your recent changes to Lophocampa nimbifacta and Lophocampa niveigutta. I fixed the first one but not the second. If we use an author's words without explaining that we are quoting them, it is plagiarism. Please read through Wikipedia:Quotations so that you understand how to use quotes on Wikipedia. This isn't something I know a lot about, but I'd be happy to help as much as I can. Thanks,  SchreiberBike | ⌨  06:34, 27 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I thought by including a reference with the Public domain notice, that covered it. I guess not. I may need to go back through my refs. Sigh. Always something to learn.ThorbyTech (talk) 06:40, 27 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thorby, I just looked and saw that you hadn't done any Wikipedia editing since my note above. I don't want to discourage you at all. The images and text you added to articles were a great help and make the encyclopedia better for people trying to get information on these species. I hope you will keep up your good work and, like you said, there's always plenty to learn. Best wishes in the new year.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  23:32, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
