Welcome!

Welcome to Wikipedia, Thomas H. White! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:

There are a lot of policies and guides to read, but I highly recommend reading over those first. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk Pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? :)

I hope you enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. We can use all the help we can get! Have a nice day. Sincerely, Ryan. 12:23, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

Nathan Stubblefield edit

Thanks for adding the scanned articles from Trumbell White and Waldon Fawcett. Stubblefield was an amazing inventor. I have followed his work for abut 40 years, and communicated with his son, shown in one of the illustrations. It just shows that for every Marconi or even Tesla, there were a hundred Stubblefields who labored without any reward or recognition. Edison 06:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reginald Fessenden edit

You wouldn't happen to know the references well enough for the Reginald Fessenden article to put the in-line citations in place, would you? The article is very good but needs in-line citations to make it GA. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast 23:20, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Experimenter Publishing article edit

I found your Early Radio History web page a few years ago while doing research in Hugo Gernsback and Experimenter Publishing. It gave me some good leads; the science fiction folks ignore the radio contributions of Gernsback. I have just created an article on Experimenter Publishing on Wikipedia and would value any comments you have on it. -- SWTPC6800 (talk) 04:51, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

On 11 June 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Electrophone (information system), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Electrophone relayed theatre shows, opera performances, and church services over telephone lines? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Electrophone (information system). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Electrophone (information system)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. KUOM edit

Thank you for your contribution to KUOM regarding the early call sign of WGMS. Of the three sources cited, at least one (http://jeff560.tripod.com/call192x.html) does not in itself support the WGMS call sign for KUOM. Another page at the same site lists a possible frequency share at 1220 (jeff560.tripod.com/1928am.html), but not necessarily a relation other than that (which could be similar to the WCAL share time relationship). The additional two sources are apparently not online and cannot be reviewed for accuracy and context. Because there is little to no other data about this possible call sign, can you please confirm the information you added, preferably with online sources? August 2016 edit

Hello! Thank you for your recent contributions to Telefon Hírmondó. I did have one note for you. I am working on a maintenance project to clean up Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this: |image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]], instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do: |image=SomeImage.jpg. There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!! babel.hathitrust.org website edit

Hi Thomas. I notice that you are systematically replacing links to earlyradiohistory.us with equivalent links to babel.hathitrust.org as you did at Transmission line. Can I ask why you are doing this? There is no obvious reason why this is necessary and the early radio history site certainly loads a lot faster. SpinningSpark 16:21, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Spinningspark: In case you are unaware, earlyradiohistory.us is my own personal site, and I'm am updating the links to my site which I believe can now be better served by links to original documents. When I started the webpage 21 years ago the idea was to make available obscure documents and articles that, at the time, were only available to persons with access to major libraries. The development of a tremendous range of online sites like Hathitrust and Google books has made much of this work redundant and unneeded, especially since, for scholarship purposes, access to the original publication is far superior to a webpage article. Also, a link to the original publication gives an opportunity to see what else that publication was covering. There are a few publications, like Electrical Experimenter and Modern Electrics, that are not online, so I will keep those links unchanged. Finally, no one lives forever, so I am assuming sources like Hathitrust will be around a lot longer than I will.Thomas H. White (talk) 16:47, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation Thomas, and great work on your part. A better edit summary would help people understand what you are doing. Perhaps just a link to the explanation above! SpinningSpark 17:08, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

WRR call sign edit

Hello, Thomas. I have included the link to the Texas State Historical Association, which is where you can find the origination of the meaning for the former 1310 WRR, now 101.1, in Dallas. Have a fantastic day, Thomas, and thank you for your years of contributions here on Wikipedia.

https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/ebw05 Joe Polichino (talk) 14:39, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Joe Polichino: Laurie E. Jasinski's full statement at the WRR history page you linked to is "The origin of the call letters is unclear, two suggestions being 'Where Radio Radiates' and 'White Rock Radio,' referring to a broadcasting tower at White Rock Lake." This really doesn't meet the standard to make a definitive conclusion that WRR was a requested call meant to reflect the first listed slogan.
Jasinski's review doesn't give a reference for the two listed suggestions, but they appear to come from page 9 of Richard Schroeder's Texas Signs On: The Early Days of Radio and Television (College Station: Texas A&M University Press, 1998), which states "On August 4, 1921, a provisional license for a Land Radio Station, Limited Commercial Class, was issued to the city of Dallas for WRR (Where Radio Radiates; some people thought the call letters stood for We Reach Rockwall) by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Navigation, with 100 watts transmitting power." However, Schroeder also doesn't give a reference for this claim.
It really wasn't until the mid-1920s that stations figured out that they could even request special call letters, before then they just used whatever random call sign they were issued. Note that Jeff Miller's Requested Broadcast Calls of the 1920s page doesn't have an entry for WRR.
Sometimes stations did adopt slogans based on their existing call letters, but I searched the extensive holdings at americanradiohistory.com and didn't find any examples at all for WRR as a requested call or that the station even ever used "Where Radio Radiates" as a slogan. Moreover, a 1936 article on radio call sign meanings noted that WRR didn't have a slogan, reporting: "Although sloganless, Station WRR of Dallas, Texas, has long cherished a compliment paid by a blind listener who stated WRR, as far as he was concerned (and that went for other shut-ins, too) meant 'Worries' Ready Relief' ". ("What's in a Station's Call?" by Madeleine Moschenross, All-Wave Radio, September 1936, page 375.)
So overall, I can't find any reasonable evidence to suggest that, like virtually all radio stations in this time period, WRR was anything other than a randomly assigned call sign, or that the station had an official slogan based on its call letters.
All of this reminded me that I had copies of WRR's first two licences, which I have uploaded to the Wikipedia Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WRR_radio,_Dallas,_Texas,_August_5,_1921_license.pdf

On 16 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article WVOI, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a jury awarded $225,000 to the prospective owners of Florida radio station WODX because of poor record-keeping and breaches of their lease agreement? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/WVOI. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, WVOI), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Proposed deletion of KGED (Batesville, Arkansas) edit

The article KGED (Batesville, Arkansas) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not enough in-depth coverage to pass WP:GNG. Adding the info to the Lyon College page in the student life section, and then redirecting there is a good alternative.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WBAA edit

Wanted to let you know I just made a major expansion of this page. Since you've been on a tear with this stuff and we're starting to get our first radio station centennials (this being one of them—traditionally April 4, though the first known broadcast was April 21), I know you'd be interested and might have something to add to the early years. It's a fivefold expansion and is also designed for GA nomination sometime this year. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 19:05, 20 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

A suggestion edit

Wanted to give you a minor suggestion for your pages. Have you tried using citation templates like {{Cite news}} and {{Cite web}} in your references? This way, the style of your references is consistent with what most pages use. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 02:54, 27 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

November 2023 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in WCBS (AM), disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Please see MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE for more information regarding why the image was removed. It's best to discuss on the article's talk page before adding images that may be problematic. Thank you - BlueboyLINY (talk) 00:37, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Why was WFCI changed to WPJB??? edit

Why was WFCI changed to its later throwaway WPJB callsign? It was WFCI from 1941-1952, & only used WPJB for its final 2 years, & “WPJB” is more associated with 105.1 anyway? Stereorock (talk) 03:26, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Addional: there is now a low-power F.M. station using the call WPJB-LP, so the WPJB page should be a disambiguation. Stereorock (talk) 03:28, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The station's history is that after Frank Cook (who likely deserves a page of his own) died the newspaper saw an opportunity to add an AM station by buying WFCI, which it operated for its final two years as WPJB. Then it was able to purchase a better station, WEAN, so limited by the FCC's duopoly rule, it deleted WPJB, which, per my understanding of the Wikipedia standards, is the call sign to be used when reviewing the station history.
My understanding of the Wikipedia disambiguation standard is that there needs to be at least three (3) entries for one to be created. In the case where there are two (2) examples, the policy is for cross-referencing hatnotes, which would be the case for WPJB if there was also a WPJB-LP page. However, as far as i can tell there is currently no Wikipedia page for WPJB-LP.-- Thomas H. White (talk) 04:07, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks! You have intrigued me with Frank Cook having his own page!!! Stereorock (talk) 12:36, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
