Help Me - Sorting Table by Date

This issue below has been "answered" but not resolved. The dates in the table at November Project are still not sorting correctly. Any table experts able to tell me what I'm doing wrong?? Thkie (talk) 12:58, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

I can't seem to make the table located at November Project sortable by date... what am I doing wrong? I feel like its bc I have some "unknown"s in there but even if I remove them it still doesn't sort. Help? Thkie (talk) 18:01, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I tinkered with it in preview mode. I deleted the unknowns--that didn't help. I changed some of the dates to MM/DD/YYYY (which should be changed anyway if it's an article about a US-based event/thing), but that didn't help. Finally I deleted the data-sort-type="date"| content in the header, and that seemed to work. So maybe that's not necessary, or maybe it's not formatted properly. Hope that helps. It's a little funky still, that's for sure. I'm seeing 2011 values in the middle of the table instead of at the top or bottom, so it's not just you. It almost looks like it's trying to sort alphabetically or something. I'm re-opening your help request so that someone else can take a look at it. No probls. I'm tempted to put back the "data-sort-type", as it makes sense to include it. I don't think my change of the dates to the {{Start date}} template harmed the table any. It certainly shouldn't have. On a lark, I deleted all the references in preview mode and tried to sort, so that's not the problem. I hate tables. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:34, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

You need to input the dates in one of the various date formats, not as start date, and then it will work for you. 02-02-2002, 02.Feb.2002, 02-feb-2002 etc. Should fix itSPACKlick (talk) 14:27, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

If you look in the revision history, you can see the start date format was just added recently by Cyphoidbomb. The sorting wasn't working previous to this. Thkie (talk) 14:35, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

The problem with the format proposed by SPACKlick, is that the dates appear to show up just as you've entered them. So even though they're sortable, they're now in an unpleasant "02.Feb.2002" format instead of a natural February 2, 2002. According to WP:SORT, there IS a way to sort by full date. WP:SORT#Month, day, and year. Maybe the table needs to formatted a different way? I do notice that the section I've linked to mentions that if a number for a date is left out, the sorting is broken. We have that situation in the table, both with a February 2013 value, and it's possible that the Unknowns are messing it up.Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:10, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

I experimented around, and got it to "work" (using a preview window, I didn't want to save the page during my experiments). There are four problems with the table:

• First of all, the "unknowns" are a problem. Every row has to have a date for the column to be sortable.
• Secondly, the Madison, WI date is also a problem because it has a month and year but no date, and the dates have to be consistent in format.
• Third, the "start date" format won't sort properly, they have to be formatted as regular dates not in a template ("January 15, 2014" for example).
• And finally (the biggest problem), you can't include references in the cells, because the table has no idea what to do about them. The cells can only include date information or they won't sort.

So you're going to have to figure out a way around all of these problems if you want the table to be sortable. -- Atama頭 19:03, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, ya'll. Not totally sure what you want here, but I took a stab in my sandbox. Hopefully, you know that the initial sort when the page first loads is determined by the order in which the entries are added to the table code. Then when the little sort arrow(s) is clicked, the fun begins. The data-sort-type="date" does not seem to work well, yet, in the header in a multi-column table like this one, so I used data-sort-value="xx" in each entry, instead. Commas and geography

I've reverted your reversion of the addition of commas at Cherry County, Nebraska: according to MOS:COMMA, we need a comma after a construction like "$CITY, $STATE". Thus

"Valentine, Nebraska, was swallowed by the earth..."
not
"Valentine, Nebraska was swallowed by the earth..."

My personal taste would run toward leaving the second comma out in many cases; however, while we're editing WP, we should abide by MOS. — Ammodramus (talk) 20:25, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
