I am wondering why you removed my edits AND references from this article? And did you then nominate it for deletion or was that someone else? What's up. Doc? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 04:36, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I accidentally removed the non-infringing content you had written because you had mixed it with the infringing content. Next time you should probably rewrite the article in your userspace instead and then replace the "real" article with that. And no, I did not nominate it for deletion. That was Bearcat (talk · contribs). Theleftorium 10:53, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. I often wonder and sometimes even worry about these things. I was intentionally mixing my writings with the other stuff to create something that was not a copyright violation. It seems to me that the plagiarized parts of this article, from Find-a-Grave I believe, were actually lifted there from somewhere else, but since they (FaG . . .hmmmm?) do not have the sort of eye towards copyrights that we do they were not concerned. Life is good, Happy New Year, unless you are holding out for the Tibetan New Year, in which case we can discuss it then. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 03:39, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Happy New Year to yourself. :) Theleftorium 10:32, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:24, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

The Simpsons

Why did you remove my ratings table from The Simpsons article? It was referenced, and most articles on shows use seasonal ratings now.. Pic Editor960 (talk) 16:58, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

You do not have consensus to add that table to the article. See Talk:The_Simpsons#Nielsen_Rating for the discussion that took place earlier. Theleftorium 17:00, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
Wasted a lot of time for nothing then! lol. Pic Editor960 (talk) 17:04, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

GA Sweeps update

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 90% done with only 226 articles remain to be swept! As always, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. With over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 4 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. As an added incentive, if we complete over 100 articles reviewed this month, I will donate $100 to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps participants. I hope that this incentive will help to increase our motivation for completing Sweeps while supporting Wikipedia in the process. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:18, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

One Time image

Just wondering, why is File:Bieberonetimedance.jpg listed for deletion as it enhances the article by giving the reader a visual of Bieber performing the song. Candyo32 (talk) 17:16, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

It doesn't enhance the understanding of the article at all. All it shows is Bieber and his three back-up dancers. This image also fails part 1 of the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria ("No free equivalent"). Surely a free alternative of him performing the song must be available? Theleftorium 17:23, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

No free equivalent exists that would effectively identify the article's subject Candyo32 (talk) 17:28, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
I provided you with one that's just as good ([2]). I'm sure more free equivalents exist (or can be created). Theleftorium 17:34, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
However, the provided image is not of the select song. Candyo32 (talk) 17:41, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Al Jean, eh?

Good luck. Try to ensure neutrality by balancing fan criticism of him with his comments saying that he ignores fan criticism, you should find one in every single interview he has given in the last 6 years. On a slightly more serious note, you may be able to use this hilarious quote from him: "Well, it's possible that we've declined. But honestly, I've been here the whole time and I do remember in season two people saying, 'It's gone downhill.' If we'd listened to that then we would have stopped after episode 13. I'm glad we didn't." (Benji Wilson (9-1-2010). "The writer". Radio Times. p. 16. {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |date= (help)) Probably sums up the arrogant contadiction that is Al Jean (why would you have ended the show after 13 episodes due to criticism in season 2). Anyway, enough of my anti-Jean rambling, good luck with the page. Gran2 21:00, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

You really like to stalk, huh? ;) Thanks for the quote, it will definitely be useful in the article. And feel free to help out if you want to. :) Theleftorium 21:11, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
My therapist told me it was a great way to meet people ;) But seriously, it's nice to see what people get up to, especally when I have no real time to do all that much myself. But I'll see if I can find anything else for Jean's article at some point. Gran2 21:44, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 and Dermatology-related content

I noticed that you are participating in the 2010 WikiCup. I have been working on the Bolognia push which is a project to make sure Wikipedia has an article (or redirect) on every know cutaneous condition. With that being said, there are still many cutaneous condition stubs to be made, and Bolognia could be a source for a lot of DYK articles, etc. Therefore, I was thinking maybe we could help one another... a competative WikiCup that also serves to improve dermatologic content on Wikipedia. I could e-mail you the Bolognia login information if you have any interest? ---kilbad (talk) 03:14, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

ÄnglaNytt

Här kommer decenniets första ÄnglaNytt - information från Svenska kyrkan Los Angeles... I've been wanting to check out this church for Swedes in the shipping industry (it's in a harbor area), but everything they send me is in Swedish. I saw something about gravlax though, and some sort of hot cider type drink, so it seems worthwhile. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:51, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Is that church driven together with the Norwegian Sjømannskirken (no:Den norske sjømannskirken (San Pedro))? There weren't many sources for the Swedish one, but I was able to find some stuff about the Norwegian church ([3], [4]). Theleftorium 18:37, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Nevermind me, I see you discovered that already. I'll see if I can add some sources. :) Theleftorium 18:41, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
It's funny because even though it's a Norwegian church, the Swedes at it seem to be the ones doing e-mail updates and all that. Indeed I figured out that it's a merged church. Kind of interesting. That area has Croatian, Greek and Italian immigrant communities also, but it's becoming more Mexican now. It's a harbor area with some itneresting history. I like those kinds of threads. This website has a more general take on the Swedish history of Los Angeles [5]. Thanks for your help. Now I'm craving gravlax. A friend of mine it Norwegian/ Swedish but it's hard to get them to go to these things. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:48, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Sorry about any edit conflict I caused. I'm off it now. If you want to expand it that would be great, because I can't read those sources you linked. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:55, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

A Streetcar Named Marge

Don't you think that the top 10 list should be mentioned somewhere on the article? The Times is a notable newspaper, and several articles about Simpsons episodes mention the ranking on EW's top 25 list.Aquila89 (talk) 22:37, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

I won't oppose adding it, but A Streetcar Named Marge is a Featured article and should be held to a high standard. Simply stating that the episode was included in a top 10 doesn't really reveal much about it, and seems a bit trivial. Theleftorium 17:59, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Hm. Homer's Phobia is a featured article, and it says: "It was placed fifth on Entertainment Weekly's top 25 The Simpsons episode list", without elaborating, similarly to The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson, also featured. Aquila89 (talk) 18:48, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. I've added it back into the article. Theleftorium 20:20, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

The Jungle (1967 film)

Thanks for your message. Since the last issue on my creating the 9-11 Film Festival entry came up, many months ago, I've made more than 500 edits (some very minor ones on old films . ..!) without any problem or "bot attacks". I was just editing that entry when the bot entry happened. I have added the Library of Congress press release on the 2009 nominations (which include the above-named film) to the National Film Registry as a link under References.

Important note -- in both cases (this one and 9-11 Film Festival) the Wiki-bot picked up an *unauthorized use* by *another website* not related to LofC, which allows fair use in articles about the National Film Registry nominations. (And the bot jumped in within seconds, before I was finished with the first edit.) Thanks again for reading this. Tjmayerinsf (talk) 21:32, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Negative thinking

I'm very glad, and somewhat relieved, that you enjoyed it! The reaction at the screening I attended was somewhat mixed, I think because many in the American audience didn't have an appreciation for Nordic culture and so couldn't relate to the humor. (On the other hand a lot of people here liked Kitchen Stories which was torture for me.... so who know!!!) I was happy to see it won a big award at a major festival in Europe that helped it get wider release. It's a pretty sick movie I suppose, but I thought it was very provocative and funny with a lot of good artistic commentary on popular culture and conventions. I'll try to take a look. Take care. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:40, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I mucked about and rewrote the script several times. See what you think and please fix anything I mangled. Cheers. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:37, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the help, the additions are great! You must have a good memory to remember so much of the plot. :-) I nominated the article for DYK (as a co-nom) with the hook "... that director Bård Breien's directorial debut was the Norwegian film The Art of Negative Thinking, for which he won the 'Best Director' award at the 2007 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival?" Theleftorium 20:46, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
It made a big impression on me. I like foreign films because so many in the U.S. are so utterly shallow. To spend tens of millions on a movie without even bothering to develop a good storyline or dialogue is a tragedy. :) I guess I like more realistic characters which the casting and genuine qualities of Negative Thinking really captured. It didn't have much over acting type drama or haha funny acting.
I actually saw the movie when it was screened at the American Film Institute's festival in LA, so I got to meet the director and ask questions. My friend who is Nordic (and works with people recovering from tramautic brain injuries) also loved it. I think it will be a cult classic, but it needs more buzz.
Was You, the living any good? The title reminds me of Ayn Rand's We the Living, but I don't know if there's any connection.
Doesn't the main character in Negative Thinking turn a hose on the socializing group at one point? I still laugh just thinking about all the craziness in the movie like the way Tori drives or when the main character comes down the motorized stair climber dressed as a Vietnam movie character or Rambo or something (I forget who exactly he was made to look like, but I remember the bandana, long hair and attire...). That movie is so ironic. It was challenging find myself laughing so hard at someone trying to throw themselves off a roof, only to find they can't get their wheel chair over a divet. Really great stuff. Sick. I guess that's why I liked it? Oh well. :)
Anyway, I'm just glad you enjoyed the movie! Thanks very much for creating an article on it. I enjoyed reading it.
Elling is also one of my favorites, and there was a Denmark crime movie where the guy sets up a restaurant out in the woods that was good too, but I can't remember the name or the details. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:33, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Or maybe it wasn't a bandana. I just looked at a clip and he wear a baseball cap. And it was a fire extinguisher not a hose? Uh oh, there goes the memory... :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:15, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
You, the Living was good, especially the music, but I think its perhaps a bit overrated. I generally prefer foreign-language films over Swedish films, which often have really crummy lines don't sound believable (lines that no average Swede would use). Although foreigners don't notice that so I guess its a bit hard to explain. English is generally a much richer language than Swedish. That's why I speak and think in Swenglish all the time IRL. :) Theleftorium 15:56, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Did you know... that The Art of Negative Thinking is a Norwegian movie about a parapalegic who rebels against the interventions of his support group and its lead social worker?

That's a much better hook, thanks! Theleftorium 15:56, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
I just went and checked and your hook looks good! :) People often reject or change mine anyway. In a case like this I figure most people haven't heard of the director or that perticular award, event though it's a major one. Those are things I want them to find out about by reading the article! So I try to lure them in with something intriguing that they might want to learn more about and can relate to ie. a parapalegic, a rebel, a social worker. Someone will probably object that it just summarizes the movie, but I think it just gives a teaser of the broad outline and people may want to know more. And I think those subjects are things of interest to people. Working in the Vietnam war movies and pot smoking would have worked too. Who knows? Like I said, I rarely see eye to eye with the DYK folks. :) For example I thought it was cool that an architect designed a building where reform Judaism was established in the United States, but a different hook was chosen about how he designed two buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But I don't know if people can get into that because most have never heard of the buildings (even though the are significant and interesting historically). My understanding of a hook is that it's to try to snag people and make them want to learn more about a subject. So it seems to me that lots of places are historic and listed on the register, but a building where something really significant happened (especially to many Jewish readers) would be a better hook. I've also tried hooks that are somewhat mysterious to lure people in, like not saying where something is if I think it will add curiosity because I think it's good if hooks don't just summarize an article, but that has caused objections too. So who knows. What would the Art of Negative Thinking suggest? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:48, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
I know what you mean. For the ferret legging article I chose the hook "... that the sport of ferret legging is open only to sober male contestants, who must first remove their underwear?" That certainly made people curious. ;-) Theleftorium 16:14, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
Exactly. I guess there are those who want the hooks to stand on their own and be informative. There's something to be said for that maybe. But I think having teasers can be fun also. It's good to make people inquisitive. Take care. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:52, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Re:Mr. Burns

The Naming conventions for people (admittedly, it's not aimed towards fictional characters, but from what I can tell, that guideline is usually applied) say that a page name should not start with "doctor" or "Mister" or titles along those lines (it's why Nick Riviera and Julius Hibbert and Seymour Skinner go with their "real names" rather than their more well known names). Again, that guideline is for real people but I can't find anything specifically for characters. I don't really agree it, we should be able to go with their common name rather than using the characters lesser known "real" names for page titles (of course, using that logic, Waylon Smithers would be moved to "Smithers", Ned Flanders to "Flanders", etc.). -- Scorpion0422 19:04, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

In most of those cases, the character's real name is either unknown or very obscure. I think the rule is that if their full name is used multiple times, then that should be the page name over "Mr. _____". But like I said above, I would support a move to Mr. Burns, it's just a redirect to that page anyway. -- Scorpion0422 00:24, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

In case you didn't notice, there aren't any secondary sources in the couch gag article, either. THF (talk) 14:07, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

True, there aren't any secondary sources in the couch gag article. The sources do exist, however, they just haven't been added to the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of The Simpsons couch gags. Theleftorium 14:10, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to   Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than   Hunter Kahn (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to   Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Deleting my contributions

A few questions:

1. Are you an admin for wikipedia?

2. If not, then who are you to delete my contributions and tell me my sources are not reliable?

I'm sorry but this is REALLY irritating. How are you the authority of what's accurate and what isn't? Aren't you just another internet editor like the rest of us?

You deleted my cultural reference contributions on two Simpsons episode articles. A "First Blood" reference in "Separate Vocations" and a "Rocky III" reference in "Brother from the Same Planet". And, I DEMAND an explanation. What is a reliable source TO YOU??

I listed NUMEROUS sources for my contributions:

1. "Rocky III" reference in "Brother from the Same Planet":

http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Brother_from_the_Same_Planet/References

http://www.snpp.com/episodes/9F12.html

http://en.allexperts.com/e/b/br/brother_from_the_same_planet.htm

http://www.tv.com/the-simpsons/brother-from-the-same-planet/episode/1358/trivia.html?tag=cast_summary;trivia#allusions

If this many websites are in concensus, then why is it NOT credible?? Are you saying ALL these sources are false?? You don't even need to look for sources. You can just watch the episode "Brother from the Same Planet" and if you have watched "Rocky III", you'd KNOW it WAS a direct reference. Anyone could make the connection.

Please respond, I deserve an explanation for this act of censorship. I'm not spamming or vandalizing the article. I just want to contribute. User: edlitz36, e-mail: edlitz36@yahoo.com Edlitz36 (talk) 20:16, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

dopuppföljning

What is dopuppföljning? Also is Månadens or Du Levande a film with Roy Andersson (it won three Guldbagges whatever those are...). Is it any good? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:36, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi. :) I think dopuppföljning is basically a party of some sort that is celebrated on the one-year anniversary of a child's baptism. I don't think it's very common in Sweden.
Du levande (You, the Living) is a film by Andersson. It's pretty good, especially the soundtrack. The Guldbagge Awards is essentially the Swedish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Theleftorium 15:38, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
It's playing at the Svenske Kirke (sp?), but I watched some clips and I'm not sure I can handle it. :) You guys are like the Czechs of Northern Europe. Very intellectual and artsy! ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:30, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

How 'bout you, what have you been up to? Aw, my "secret stach". ;) Thanks, I appreciate that comment... a lot. I'm "cleaning" the article, so that I can create it... soon. Like old times. P.S. I did learn from a good teacher. :P --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 21:47, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome, you deserve the "teacher" bit. Well, Wikipedia's been there for all of us. I totally get why it's stealing your time. It does that to me, too. But, I love it... and I don't care who knows it. :) So, how busy are you? --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 21:59, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
Oh, that sucks. Also, it's no wonder why I haven't seen you as the "leader" in the Cup. Hunter is one of them. I thought maybe you didn't sign-up. Man. It also explains why I haven't seen you at GAN, either. I was gonna ask you if could do a "look-over" in "Gypsies, Tramps and Weed", but I saw the "busy in real life" template, so I didn't "go there". Now everything makes sense. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 22:09, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

CP

Hi. :) Just came upon your listing for Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 January 29. I just wanted to remind you that CP is not for drawing immediate attention to copyright problems, because generally those are not looked at for seven days after listing. If you're just trying to draw attention to a potential problem, WT:CP may be more effective. But it is helpful either way if you tag the article so that other contributors can help resolve the question or address the problem. I'm sure you know that there's a whole load of templates that can be used. They're collected for convenience at the copyclean resources page. With one like this, if for some reason you don't think that {{copyvio}} applies, you might consider {{copypaste}}. Anyway, I'm sitting down to investigate this one now (primarily by searching to see if they copied from us or the other way around), but just wanted to suggest this for the future.

Hope things are going well with you. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:30, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Midwest Technical Institute

Thank you for noticing that Midwest Technical Institute was a copyvio. I rewrote the article and removed your speedy tag because I thought the subject might be notable, and I was able to add references to it. Often the best way to deal with a copyvio article about a potentially notable subject is to stub the article so that it is no longer a copyvio and then expand it with references from reliable sources - or, alternatively, to leave it as a stub with any problems such as unreferenced tagged so that someone with more time can expand it. - Eastmain (talkcontribs) 22:40, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for rewriting it. I've seen you work on several copyvios before and I really appreciate it. :) I actually prefer to rewrite articles too (I've rewritten several copyvios and even gotten some of them to DYK status). WP:COPYVIO on TV Show episode summaries

Hello! I'm sorry to bother you, but I have seen you do a lot of work on removing copyrighted material from episode summary lists. As a newbie, I have also tried to do this, but it seems to be a losing battle. I recently removed summaries copied from ABC Family press releases on List of Greek episodes, just to find them replaced with new summaries from TV.com. (I only checked a few so far.) My question: Should these be removed too? Are there any sites at all where episode summaries CAN be copied? Another question, not directly related to this...how do you know if the summary was copied into wikipedia, or was copied from wikipedia? Is there a way to tell? Sorry for the questions. I'd appreciate any help/info/suggestions you can provide. Thanks. --Logical Fuzz (talk) 21:10, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi! You're not bothering at all. I'm glad you've decided to help out with copyright issues. :) Yes, summaries from TV.com should be removed because they are copyrighted. All websites that are released under the CC-By-SA license (all Wikia sites, for example) can copied from, as long as attribution is provided (either in an edit summary or by using one of the attribution templates). Knowing if the summary appeared on Wikipedia first can be tricky. Copied content is usually not wikified (no wikilinks, etc.) so that could be a sign. You could also use archive.org, and if you're unsure you could ask for a second opinion at WT:CP. I hope that helps. Theleftorium 21:23, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Thank for your response and your suggestions. It is very much appreciated. I didn't know about archive.org. I'm always learning here! Now, back to work on those summaries.... --Logical Fuzz (talk) 21:44, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

I don't know if the article used to mention this, but Jean is married to fellow Simpsons writer Stephanie Gillis. Unfortunately, I've searched for sources that say this, and haven't found much. One that I found a while back mentions that Jean's wife is named Stephanie, but nothing else. It is mentioned in Ortved's book, but it doesn't give any details (ie. Couple of concerns

(1) I was wondering if there was an accidental "catch all" copyvio tag on most of Keith Cieplicki. I'll be the first to admit parts of the article are violating copyright law, but I did re-word a lot of it before putting it on. There are parts that I feel should stay, which at present are blanked from the copyvio notice:

  • The entire Playing Career section except "He was the Burlington Free Press Player of the Year his senior season and was recently named to the Barre Times Argus "Dream Dozen," which honored the 12 greatest Vermont boys and girls basketball players since 1960."
  • In the Syracuse University section under Coaching Career, I think that whole section should stay except "While with the Orangewomen he posted a 28-55 overall record in four seasons.[8] His most successful campaign came in 2004-05 when he guided the Orange to a 13-16 overall mark and the team’s first Big East Tournament victory since 2002 with a 65-58 triumph against Georgetown."
  • The entire Controversy section, which if one were to read what is on the Wikipedia page versus what is in the article used as a reference, it is quite noticeably different (similarly structured but definitely re-worded).
  • And I'm just wondering where the violation was for Coaching career:University of Vermont. I'm not accusing you of anything, I just couldn't find the article that that section was allegedly copied from. If you can provide the link (again, not accusing) I'd be fine with the tag as is.

(2) The second concern I have is regarding Henry C. Wolf Law Library. Neither one of you have reviewed it yet, but given the article's length and whatnot, I fear that there might be a stray sentence or two that are the same. I wanted to point this article specifically out to you as a preemptive concern that it will be wrongfully tagged, in entirety no less, as a copyright violation. It's not (so far as I am aware). When I created that article a year or two ago, I remember using the law library's website as my reference, but I spent literally 3 or 4 hours re-wording and re-writing it. I even made the note in the article itself (at the top of the history section) that it was "adapted and abridged" from the website, proving that it wasn't copied/pasted. I just don't want to see all those hours of agonizing work blanked in one fell swoop because it appears as if it is a copyright violation. Jrcla2 (talk) 20:53, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry. The reviewing admin will notice which parts are copied and which are not. Since the copyvio template can't just blank a few sentences, we have to blank it all. Regards, Theleftorium 21:59, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Kevin Kiesel

I am disputing another copyvio tag. In Kevin Kiesel, the paragraphs titled "Albright" and "Fairfield" are correctly blanked, but "Assistant coach" and "Millersville" are uniquely written and have been wrongly blanked. Jrcla2 (talk) 21:28, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

I have left a note about processes, including why the bulk of the article is blanked, at his talk page. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I replied exactly at the same time above. :) Theleftorium 22:03, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
You should probably read my note there. :) The reviewing admin probably won't look for exact sentence matches; CCIs are handled differently than SCV and CP matters. And, by the way, I really appreciate your work on this one. The backlog is getting a bit out of hand! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... I think I will have to be a bit more specific with the template then. What do you do if the copyvio appears at the beginning and at the end of the article, but not in the middle? Theleftorium 22:08, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
It depends on who created the article. If it isn't the CCI contributor, you can simply remove it and place {{cclean}} at the article's talk. You can also revert back to the last version before the subject's contributions. If it's foundational, you can tag it {{copyvio}}, since the entire article is likely to be a derivative work. (Even if foundational, if it isn't extensive, you can clean it on the spot.)
I only place the {{subst:copyvio}} in CCIs if the violation is foundational or if it is such a contentious or popular article that it may have regular contributors willing to help salvage content. Otherwise, I remove it immediately. While with SCV and CP, we do not start with a presumption of infringement, with CCIs past history is sufficient evidence. The article reviews are a courtesy to other contributors and the project, since even though policy supports it we don't want to lose content that we don't have to.
We have some special templates we use in CCI cleanup. For instance, if you can't find the source but you have good reason to believe there is infringement (if it matches a pattern, say with the Doctor Who plot copier), you remove the text presumptively and place {{subst:CCI}} at the article talk. If the contributor created the article and you tag it for presumptive deletion (for the same reason), you use {{subst:CCId}}. For between cases, I have a template I use myself for when I've reverted after verifying some infringement but noting that some text removed may be clean: User:Moonriddengirl/CCIr. --22:37, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for clearing that up. Theleftorium 22:43, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Tony Alamo

Regarding your claim that the Alamo comment was a copy vio, I did a google search last night and got this result there I found a few citations with the same comment, the citation Flying added was no wayback and as the comment is so small and was to be found at multiple locations as far as copyright violation goes I saw it as non existent anf being unable to find the citation flying added to support it, I felt it was at multiple locations and not a clear violation attributable to any single source, the exact same comment is at CBS news here, 21st and at the new york times here and at the location you say is the copyright owner usa today here and here as the exact comment was so simple and at multiple major locations I felt it not actually a violation and not attributable to anyone, this opinion was also compounded by the fact that she had added a citation that is now unavailable and why add a citation about the incident when you have supposedly copied the tiny comment from another location, I feel that you may well be wrong in your assumption as regards this claim of copyright violation, please let me know how you feel about this as I wanted to go over some more today but if your of the opinion that I left something that was a violation I will leave it to others, thanks. Off2riorob (talk) 16:53, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

The reason that the sentence appears in so many sources is that it comes from an Associated Press article (which is copyrighted). Sure, two copied sentences is not really a serious copyright violation, but I think it's best to be avoided. Your help at the CCI is greatly appreciated so please don't stop because of this. :) Theleftorium 17:03, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, in future when I find some small issue like that I will just give it a small write to make sure, I am glad you brought that up as it helps me learn the level of care to take. Off2riorob (talk) 17:17, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

A special well done goes to   Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to   Hunter Kahn (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70).   Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points),   Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points),   Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and   Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Bart Gets Hit by a Car

I have some time to listen to a DVD commentary today, and I was wondering if you would mind if I added a production section for this article. Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment already has a production section (it just needs reception and more sources), so BGHbaC is the only one from the season 2 eps that still needs DVD information. That way, we can finally get that pesky second season finished. -- Scorpion0422 18:21, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

I don't mind at all. Last week was a bit busier for me than I had expected. As for "Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment", Cirt said he would finish the article when I asked him in January. You might want to drop a note on his talk. :) Theleftorium 19:27, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

The Better Man (book)

Thanks for tagging this for speedy deletion, it was indeed a straight cut&paste copyvio. However it appears to be a notable book, so I have completely rewritten the article, using the author's page (which was what was copied) to craft a much shorter plot summery, and then added several critical comments. I don't think three is any remaining copyright issue, but since I technically declined your tag, I am dropping you this courtesy note. DES (talk) 01:46, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

No problem. Thank you for the rewrite. :) I'd be good if you could remove the copyvio from the history, though. Theleftorium 11:35, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

What is the projects thoughts on using user votes as part of the reception? [6] Or is it better we just stick with professional reviews. CTJF83 chat 20:11, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

We should definitely only use professional reviews. Theleftorium 20:15, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, also Treehouse of Horror II looks GA ready, and it appears User:ImperatorExercitus has disappeared, perahps one of us should submit it for him to further the drive. CTJF83 chat 20:56, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Shouldn't that be a GA or an FA? Anyway, it needs more inline sources. Theleftorium 21:35, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Well on the GA review the reviewer thought it should be an FL, cause it "is essentially a list". Since I have no FL experience, and you have lots, do you think it should be a GA then and not an FL? CTJF83 chat 21:38, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

I think it looks pretty good. Why is "Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious" used as the example of an episode he produced in seasons 8-9? Why not mention "Lisa's Sax", which was the first episode he wrote without Reiss? -- Scorpion0422 18:05, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: Dunst

Thanks, I appreciate that comment. Will I see any of your articles on there? Though, don't expect to see any more of my actor FA's on the Main Page. OMG, I never knew that so much vandalism occurs when the article is featured there. Never again. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 22:10, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

That's a great article, and good Lisa episode. I was going to support it, when it was at FAC, but I didn't get the chance. Oh well. Yeah, if you see the article's history, a lot when on. I'm just grateful it's protected from IP's... at the moment. So, are you still busy? --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 22:28, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh, that still sucks. You know, I saw your name at GAN, and I thought just maybe that you'd return full-time. Well, if you're not in writing mood, what you up to here? P.S. I don't mean it like in a "bad way", just wondering what you up to, you know. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 17:30, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh, that's cool, your helping the community out with that, that's not bad. :) If you do, I'll be happy to give you a review, been meaning to review some articles for a while, since I got a couple over there. I'm up to the usual, you know, working on random stuff (episodes, wrestling, actors, etc.), and for a second time, have Brad Pitt at FAC. I've been doing kind of good... kind of, but you're doing better than me. :) --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 18:10, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

The Devil Wears Nada

I don't know if you're still working on the article, but the appearance of Nicolas Sarkozy & Carla Bruni in the episode received a bit of coverage in the media, so that could be incorporated. [7] You wouldn't be able to add this, but now the media is reporting that Bruni had an extramarital affair, which is interesting because in the episode, her having an affair with Carl is a major plot point. -- Scorpion0422 03:20, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Behind the Laughter

Good day, filthy Swede :) Long time no talk. I know you're involved with the Simpsons articles on here so thought this was the best place to mention it - the Behind the Laughter article is a bit of a nightmare to read, none of the writers nor the director are listed. I was wondering if this was intentional or if it can go ahead and be added. PS: unrelated, but PM me on MT2 with your msn :) IvanP91 —Preceding undated comment added 07:49, 16 March 2010 (UTC).

More on WP:COPYVIO on TV series episode lists

Hi, I'm back with another question. I was starting to remove almost all the episode summaries from List of Mercy episodes because they were direct copies of text at TV.com. Some of these have blatant spelling or punctuation errors, making it clear they come from the same source. My question: TV.com is editable by anyone who signs up. They can write their own summaries. So how do I know they weren't copied from Wikipedia, instead of the reverse? Is there any sort of "rule" that any info contributed to those sites is copyrighted by the site (becomes their property) and can't be reused? But then I'm back to which came first. Anyways, I didn't delete them after all. I'd appreciate your insight. Sorry to bother you again. Thanks. --Logical Fuzz (talk) 03:23, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi again! :) Wikipedia:Spotting possible copyright violations has some good advice for spotting copyvios (especially the "Indicative, but by no means conclusive signs" part). I don't think there is a way to tell where to content came from originally, other than asking the contributor who added the content. TV.com's Terms of Use might contain the answer to your final question, but that is too complex for me. I'll ask an experienced editor about it. Theleftorium 15:32, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I'm sure I don't qualify as a more experienced editor, but the terms do say "All materials published on our sites ... are protected by our copyrights" and later "You hereby grant us ... irrevocable, royalty-free, nonexclusive, sublicensable license to use, reproduce, create derivative works of, distribute, publicly perform, publicly display, transfer, transmit, distribute, and publish Your Content" (emphasis added). I'm afraid that doesn't clear it up because of the non-exclusive part, because if it was from Wikipedia in the first place (or the same person wrote it) then (as far as I know) it's still fine. So it's still a chicken/egg problem. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:04, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for spotting that! :) Logical Fuzz, I think the best solution would be to ask the contributors if they wrote the content or got it from TV.com. Theleftorium 16:13, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Yes, and a chicken/egg problem it remains. :/ Generally, if the material is not archived, I look for context clues. Does the person who added it have a history of this, for instance? Were all of the summaries that are duplicated on TV.com put on Wikipedia at the same time? Neither of those are definitive, but can help you judge. One of the biggest clues I look for are changes. I scroll forward from the edit where the content appeared to the first change and compare it to the external site. Does the change make it more like or less like the source? This is no help, obviously, if they do not change. :) Let me go take a look at the specific list and see if any of my tricks will make the situation more clear. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:15, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

No archives. Rats. Looking at the latest episode, I seize on the words "anorexic disorder" and search the history to see when it first showed up. Right here. This series of edits is a strong indication of infringement. It was all added by one person during roughly one time frame. The content did not change, so that's no help. But if these summaries had been added over weeks or months, they would more likely have evolved naturally. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:23, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you all for your comments, and thanks to Theleftorium for the link for spotting possible violations. I didn't mean to make this question any additional work for anyone. Sorry, Theleftorium--to me you are an experienced editor! ;) ETA: Funny thing, Moonriddengirl, you found that out in a much better (and quicker) manner than I did. Very good catch. Thank you all. --Logical Fuzz (talk) 16:26, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
TheLeftorium is a very experienced editor. :D Just to be clear, even if they did write it, we need them to verify that, which is difficult with sites like tv.com. If content is previously published elsewhere we can't import it under our copyright policy and Terms of Use unless it is verified to be compatible. That makes it challenging for authors to contribute content both to us and sites like that or IMDb. They can't easily verify that, by putting up a notice at the site. (And I do this practically all day every day, so I've gotten a bit efficient at it; you can, too, if you want to, Logical Fuzz. WP:COPYCLEAN needs you! ;D) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:31, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh, PS, I did notice you've been doing a good job of watching out for copyvios there. Appreciated! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:33, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, I thought I was doing a good job, but I missed the re-add. I could have sworn I'd stripped that page already. Silly me...I'm always learning. Thanks, though. --Logical Fuzz (talk) 19:31, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Heh, thanks Logical Fuzz! The evidence Moonriddengirl found is probably enough to remove the summaries from the article. Hopefully this resolved your questions. :) Theleftorium 17:08, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Will do, thanks a bunch.--Logical Fuzz (talk) 19:31, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly.   Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B.   TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is.
