Tropical Storm Cindy (1993) PR rainfall edit
Hey, DR. I have a question: in your report, the peak total for Cindy in Puerto Rico is 4.60" at Puerto Real; however, a report from the USGS that was archived by the NHC mentions the peak total as being 5.54" near Cerrillos River. Hurricane Paul 1982 edit
Hey there DR! I was wondering if there was a reason that this rainfall map for Hurricane Paul in 1982 was never published. I'm currently writing an article for List of New Mexico hurricanes, and that map seems to indicate that Paul caused some decent rainfall in New Mexico (3 inches in the one spot). HURDAT discrepancy edit
I've discovered a discrepancy for the numbering of the storm with the track shown here. At the article, there was once a storm numbered as #4, although it didn't exist in HURDAT - that edit remained in the history for at least four years (I didn't check which edit added it). I couldn't find the storm as "#9" - which was the original number used in the article for that storm - and the track does say it was #8. HURDAT calls it #8 too, but the MWR for that year says it was #9. So does this HURDAT document, which is confusing] - HURDAT has just entered the 1940s' reanalysis (AFAIK), and in that document, I don't see any storms that were added for 1947. - That makes sense, given Floyd did 14". Particularly where I live (right next to the ocean), I can't see it being nearly that high. Am I right in assuming that adjacent to the ocean would not experience the maximum rainfall at this latitude? For that matter, when was the last time there was a well-defined hurricane that made landfall north of North Carolina? Yea, I figured that. I haven't been involved much with the meteorology Wikiproject, but I got the sense of inactivity after I saw how little used the talk page was. I'm glad you responded though! What do you think of this so far? I think I may do something like List of United States billion dollar weather disasters, or something like that. Use the NCDC, and then find any other billion dollar disasters floating out there (starting with Betsy 65). That might come after doing some other assorted weather projects, like the 1998 Chiapas flooding and fixing up some other flood articles. - The history of TC Naming is rather complex and needs a bunch of better sources are needed to be found. The SHEM history is virtually non existent, while we have to figure out if the X, Y, Z and Greek names were added from 1985 or if it was just introduced full time in 1987.Jason Rees (talk) 02:10, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Some thoughts on what makes a basin edit
What makes a TC basin? It isnt by TCWC/RSMC since the borders between TCWCs in the Australian region are not very clear. (eg: Jakartas AoR ends at 10S in some parts and at 9S in others). It is also worth noting that the last inspection of NHC made it very clear that they wanted CPHC and NHC merged (Pg 19). So what makes a basin - i would personally recommend that its done logically by the RSMC AoRs (eg: WPAC 180-100E, AUS 90-160E etc).Jason Rees (talk) 17:58, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
- In some ways, NHC acts as if they already deal with the northwest quarter of the globe, TC wise. I've seen a refereed article try to demarkate the basins by areas of genesis. If you chose that route, there is a clear division around 120W in the northeast Pacific between the normal northeast Pacific genesis area south of Mexico and the storms which form farther westward, towards Hawai'i. The area around Australia and Indonesia is a mess...from what I've seen, TCs from the eastern section of the South Indian could easily be grouped with the Austrailian and southern Micronesian formations. Hey, I checked for the 1956 document, but I had no luck (although I did find something that might allow me to make an article for the July 1933 Texas tropical storm). It sounds cool though, especially since I love those older storms. BTW, I put this conversation under the "Beryl" header, since I wasn't sure whether you saw my message on Beryl's talk page. Since you're the rainfall guru, I was wondering whether you thought if the rainfall before the storm formed (namely in Cuba, Bahamas, and south Florida) should be included and with such detail? Over the last few days, ive been going through that report and have spotted a discrepancy between your Maxima and it, over Hurricane Florence's 1953 Rainfall in Lockhart Alabama. According to the book it peaked at 13.6" (Pg: 178/188), however using NCDC data you have it peaking as 14.71. - They might be using different date sets. In that case, they're both right, and the decision is yours. =)
July 1933 tropical storm edit
Heya DR! I'm continuing my work on the 1933 AHS, and I came across something (usual discrepancy between sources). MWR says 22.3 inches of rain, but HPC says 21.3 inches. How come the inch difference? I'm mostly concerned because there is no HPC page to actually cite it to, since it appears that storm never got a proper page (and I'm not a fan of citing images). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:04, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Why is it always a one inch discrepancy? When I get to work next week I'll check into your and Jason's discrepancies within the worksheets. In his case, it's likely that I used a longer time period than the 1956 report. In your case, Cline may have made an error in math. This report from 1956 agrees with my amount. Yay?
