Group One wins

Hi, I've noticed you've added a few wins in the King's Stand Stakes from the period when it was a Group Two race to various jockeys' and trainers' articles, e.g. Geoff Wragg's win with Cassandra Go in 2001. Do you think maybe its best to just restrict the list of wins to G1 races when they actually held G1 status? Anyway, it's good to see someone editing flat racing articles, as it isn't an area which is terribly well-covered on here at the moment - I'm more of a jumps enthusiast myself but trying to keep the flat race articles up to date.--Bcp67 (talk) 19:19, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

I know what you mean about the King's Stand, but it was also a Group 1 between 1973 and 1987. Now that it's been restored to its former glory, it would be strange to include some and not others. We've sort of done the same with races like the Haydock Sprint Cup, Golden Jubilee Stakes, Prince of Wales's Stakes, Sun Chariot and so on. All races that have become group 1s. I try and keep the flat up to date, but rarely have the time to do as much as I'd like. Like you, I slightly prefer NH. Would like to see NH trainers and jockeys on Wiki with updated Grade 1 wins in the UK and Ireland at least, but appreciate it would be a long old job. The brig (talk) 20:31, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Still not convinced about this! E.g. you've noted Piggott winning the Prix d'Astarte (now Rothschild) in 1979, but it was only a G3 race then. How about noting that the race didn't carry the same status as it does now? Should we also record that Piggott won the Flying Childers in 1973 and 1974 when it held the G1 status which it subsequently lost? --Bcp67 (talk) 21:16, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Well, I know what you mean, and you're probably right. I guess that I want people to be able to set today's major races in some sort of context - ie that people should be aware that Piggott, Eddery, Fabre and so on have actually won these races that are Group 1s today, albeit at a time when they were more lowly cnsidered.

So many of today's G1 races have been promoted to that status, including such as the Queen Anne and the Prince of Wales that are now regarded among the Crown Jewels, that it's hard to know exactly what is the right course of action. However, with the exception of the King's Stand, not many yo-yo between G1 and G2 status. Today, I imagine that people want to know who has won what are the great races of the day.

The Flying Childers, which you cite, has lost a lot of its lustre over the past 40 years or so, and it no longer figures at the top of people's thoughts, I don't suppose. On the other hand, your idea of some sort of asterisk about changes in races' status has plenty of merit. The only trouble is that one might end up with a lot of sub-clauses in each profile that might only serve to confuse. If you can see a nice, tidy way of approaching the problem, I'd be more than happy for you to apply it!

McCoy's winners

Hi - you've reverted my change of earlier to put McCoy's winners back to 4,046. Apologies for that - I'd always assumed that his total and landmarks referred to Britain only, but I can see it's Britain and Ireland - only a very small number in Ireland anyway. No worries at all; I was just updating as he went along! He had another winner in Ireland today, so as of now he has 3,916 in Britain and 130 in Ireland, making a total of 4,046. Thanks for keeping me on my toes - I guess I'm just trying to ensure that such a brilliant sportsman has a constantly updated log of his achievements. Hopefully, others, including you will also keep it going. Cheers!
