Thanks for your compliments and if you really want to know the definition of "mesmerizing animation" my/Zom-B's Mandelbrot zoom in animation might be worth a peak too. OK, fair enough. At least I tried :-) It is something I feel strongly about: I first mentioned it on the Talk:The_Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(radio_series)#Cult_following page, where you will see that I list out the first 10 hits on that search in the New Scientist archive. As I say on that page, he gets about 80 hits in 1000 issues of New Scientist... which is more than I would imagine any single scientist achieving... even Einstein might struggle to get that many hits. So, yes, we could certainly turn each of those (or at least the best ones) into conventional bibliographic references. However, that's not exactly what you are asking for... we would have to go through those articles to find which ones not only liken the scientific idea to the Douglas Adams idea, but also comment on how the latter was remarkable in pre-dating the former. I am sure that I remember that some of those articles do indeed say something like that. It would just take a bit of research (which I could do), provided that you first confirm that this would be time well spent :-) (Well done, BTW, for the banner on your talk page :-) ) TheAMmollusc (talk) 07:44, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I know :-) I am aware of the danger, and certainly, I take your point. Indeed, the Wikipedia:Orphan#Suggestions_for_how_to_de-orphan_an_article section does say as much. The problem is that by tackling the orphaned articles backlog, I am constantly encountering (and thereby learning about) subjects that are new to me. Although I do my best to read each article as thoroughly as I can, I remain a novice in the new subject, and consider it safest to put the reference to the orphaned article in the See also section, and let an editor more expert than I work out how to weave it better into the main part of the article. Yes, I noticed it yesterday, and had a look, and was suitably impressed. Well done! No, I can't say I have a great deal more to add. I know the name of the lane that he lived in (Watermans Lane) and remember the wood-carved plate on his gate (complete with little mice I think it was). Contrary to what it says on the Dibden Purlieu WP page (and hence, also, now on the Ron Lane page), I don't believe that Dibden Purlieu is technically in the New Forest (with the boundary lieing immediately outside the village, on the other side of the main road between Fawley and Totton). If you can think of anything that I might be able to look into, then do ask... but I can't guarantee anything... I live a long way away from there, now. TheAMmollusc (talk) 06:38, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Nanotechnology link

I have reverted your edit to nanotechnology. Adding a link to an article page in order to encourage editors to review the linked article is not helpful to our readers. If you need a review, ask at a suitable page, not in the mainspace. The article is a one sentence dicdef stub which you suspect ought to be proded. It should not be linked anywhere.

I also do not approve of the practice of linking rubbish articles merely for the sake of de-orphaning them. The link should always be of some benefit to the reader. SpinningSpark 12:12, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

OK, I take your points (especially the one about asking at a suitable page, which I have, indeed, done in the past on other occasions). I would like to add one observation, though: I do find it comes, to me, as a slight shock that you seem to imply the existence of two distinct populations (us and them) on Wikipedia; until you wrote that, I had always been thinking of it as a single population (those users who have never edited an article are simply users who have not yet started editing articles). Of course there are two distinct populations. The vast majority of Wikipeida users have never edited an article, and most never will. It is not "us and them" though; most editors probably read something now and then as well. Actually, you could say there were more than two groups; the community of editors has little overlap with the community of developers, who are just as important for keeping this place going. Sorry, I don't live anywhere near the museum so no chance of pics or sharing their information plaques. deOrphaning script

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.
