New Reflinks tool edit

Hey Teri-- looks like there is a new and reliable Reflinks tool developed by User:Zhaofeng Li that you and the volunteers can use. I've tested it out in a few places and it seems to work quite well, and even has a few customization options that weren't previously available. To add it in, go to Special:MyPage/common.js and add in the following text:

{{subst:iusc|User:Zhaofeng Li/Reflinks.js}}

I'll post these instructions at our project talk page for future reference. I, JethroBT drop me a line 23:28, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

How to block edit

Only admins can block, and I'm not one. The usual sequence of events is to give the vandal a sequence of increasingly severe warnings: {{uw-vandalism1}}, {{uw-vandalism2}}, {{uw-vandalism3}}, {{uw-vandalism4}}, and then to report them at WP:AIV. Sometimes, if several vandals are targeting a single page, it's better to request page protection at WP:RFPP instead. Philip Trueman (talk) 16:11, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Philip Trueman Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. TeriEmbrey (talk) 16:18, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

A new reference tool edit

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. If you have a few minutes, please visit the testing page for simple instructions on how to try this new tool. Regards, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:48, 10 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject X edit

Hello Teri! Per your request on Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Pilots I have prepared a draft on Wikipedia:GLAM/Pritzker/sandbox. Please let me know what you think. Cheers, Harej (talk) 19:33, 22 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Harej: That is awesome! How could the archives for the project be worked in? TeriEmbrey (talk) 15:18, 24 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'm assuming you're referring to the completed tasks? My plan is to migrate the to-do list over to our Wikipedia Requests system which will make it easier to keep track of tasks as they are done. As for the tasks already completed, I could move them over and then immediately mark them as complete. The tool does not do this yet but there will be a counter to keep track of completed tasks. Does this sound workable? Harej (talk) 20:30, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Harej: I was referring to Wikipedia:GLAM/Pritzker/Archived_outcomes especially the Articles created as we sometimes need to refer back to this at PMML. Thanks so much for all your help! TeriEmbrey (talk) 20:35, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

It shouldn't be an issue to work those in; there's a bot that will generate a list of DYKs for a WikiProject and the completed articles can be documented in Wikipedia Requests as above (with a list of said completed articles generated). Harej (talk) 22:12, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Harej: If we can work those items in, then I think we are ready to move out of the sandbox. Thanks for all your help! TeriEmbrey (talk) 13:47, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice edit

Hi TeriEmbrey, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Ruby Jane Douglas edit

I stumbled into this subject on the GLAM redlink page and have been really taken with her story. I'm finding lots of sources, but could use more. The page will definitely be put up for DYK. Does the museum library have any information on the WAC Special Services Entertainment programs? The entire subject matter of WWII WACs is fascinating. If I need to visit, I'll be glad to come down. BusterD (talk) 21:53, 25 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wow! I just stumbled onto her married name and as Jane Douglass White, she became quite a figure as a professional musician and Christian entertainer. There's a bunch of material available. However, I'm still interested in WAC Special Services entertainment, especially now that I've discovered and started writing soldier's show. BusterD (talk) 19:55, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@BusterD: Thanks for working on these articles.

Here are some more online resources for you:

The Museum & Library has lots of books on the WACs that circulate (including via interlibrary loan). The catalog is searchable here: [[5]] and our OCLC symbol (which your local librarian will need for the ILL request) is ILPML.

Have a great day! TeriEmbrey (talk) 14:18, 27 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much. I've put this up for DYK (along with her song) but I'll be building this article in the meantime. Lots of high to medium quality sources. Originally this was just about a school teacher who joined the wartime army and wrote a song. It's going to be about a young soldier who took her wartime experiences and made another career out of the confidence and contacts she made while a soldier. This is an awesome citizen soldier story, but the kind that rarely gets told. Until now. Thanks for the redlinks. BusterD (talk) 18:39, 29 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm looking for Far from Eden by Camilla Mays Frank, an autobiography by White's WAC song co-author. I don't see it in the Pritzker museum library collection based on a preliminary search. It does appear to be available for second-hand purchase. I'm not anxious to buy it merely for the purpose of article creation/improvement, but might do so if I knew the book would be accepted by the library as a donation after my use. I have too many history books already. This sort of work seems exactly in line with the museum's focus on the citizen soldier. BusterD (talk) 18:54, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@BusterD: PMML loves book donations. If you'd like to donate volumes to PMML, send an potential donation inventory list with a postal address to us at librarian@pritzkermilitary.org PMML responds to donation inquiries via formal letter. Your donations may be tax deductible so be sure to check with your financial adviser and keep your acknowledgement receipts. Thanks for your support and all your work on the Wikipedia articles! Does the library have access to Navy Times archives? edit

I'm trying to source the removal of captain's gigs in a February 2008 issue of Navy Times. BusterD (talk) 08:22, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

PMML has e-access, but I didn't see the article you are looking for. Do you have a better citation? TeriEmbrey (talk) 14:41, 27 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Maybe this will help. Here is the deadlink: https://www.navytimes.com/news/2008/02/navy_captgigs_080210w/ BusterD (talk) 17:08, 27 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Here's the complete citation: Ewing, Philip. “The Gig Is Up.” Navy Times 57, no. 21 (February 18, 2008): 4. https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f5h&AN=30023699&site=ehost-live.

Abstract: The article reports that the captain's gigs of 11 U.S. Navy aircraft carriers will be phased out by June 2009. It is stated that under a directive issued by the Naval Air Forces, these carriers must turn in their captain gigs, which are motorboats that bring ferry commanding officers to shore when their ships are anchored away, by June 30. It is claimed that the removal of these boats will cut the maintenance costs and free up valuable hangar bay space.

That should help you get a copy of the article through interlibrary loan at your local library. TeriEmbrey (talk) 21:03, 29 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have relayed your link and cite material to WT:SHIPS. Thanks enormously for going to this trouble. For my part I rode in an actual captain's gig once, when I was selling Navy Times at Pearl Harbor (my first job). We lived at Halsey Terrace while my dad was a senior ETC on sea duty and and at NAVCOMMSTA Wahiawa. BusterD (talk) 22:40, 29 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@BusterD: Thank you for sending the citation to WT:SHIPS and for sharing the anecdote about your time in Hawaii. PMML is actively seeking veterans to participate in the oral history program here. Please help us spread the word: https://www.pritzkermilitary.org/whats_on/holt-oral-history-program Best, TeriEmbrey (talk) 18:23, 30 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

WP:AFC Helper News edit

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future.
