January 2024 edit

Wikipedia's technical logs indicate that this user account has been or may be used abusively. It has been blocked indefinitely from editing to prevent abuse.

Note that multiple accounts are allowed, but not for illegitimate reasons, and any contributions made while evading blocks or bans may be reverted or deleted.
If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you should review the guide to appealing blocks, and then appeal your block by adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|Your reason here ~~~~}}. Note that anything you post in your unblock request will be public, so you may alternatively use the Unblock Ticket Request System to submit an appeal if it contains information that must be private.

Administrators: Checkusers have access to confidential system logs not accessible by the public or by administrators due to the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy. You must not loosen or remove this block, or issue an IP block exemption, without consulting with a checkuser or the Arbitration Committee. Administrators who undo checkuser blocks without permission from a checkuser or the Arbitration Committee may be summarily desysopped.

Request reason:

Hello, I have just received notification of a block - which seems to have been due to 'sock puppet' action. I am confused as to why this has happened - I have, in the last hour, submitted my first edit in a while, a change to the location of a village in my local area (I had noticed on the Wikipedia app map that the location was wrong.) Shortly after this, I was notified of the block. This is my main wikipedia account, I do not have any others so I do not see how I can be acting as a sock puppet. Thank you

Accept reason:

TechGoblin, please accept my apologies: User:Blablubbs convinced me that I was wrong. I hope this didn't turn you off from editing Wikipedia, and I appreciate your patience. Drmies (talk) 15:26, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • CU: it is possible that this user is not lying, but the sockmaster is devious. Please, feel free to run CU. Note that this editor was on a range that was occupied by a sock, they have the same user agent, the edit falls within the sockmaster's interest, and they returned after a long absence shortly after I blocked User talk:2TigerBW, as did a self-confessed sock, Architecturescorpion. Drmies (talk) 21:07, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Drmies, I appreciate the fact that you acknowledge I may not be lying - and understand the challenges with differentiating between real and fake accounts. Please let me know if there is anything I can send to help prove my case. I also understand that the long break in edits provides less information to prove I’m not a sock - however hopefully the quality of previous edits may help, alongside the fact that I have mainly focussed on Greenfield in my last couple of edits, due to my local knowledge of the area. I look forward to hearing from you. TechGoblin (talk) 21:27, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • @Drmies: Having looked at this account and several recent ones from the SPI archive, I think this is likely a false positive and would be in favour of an unblock. Happy to give more detailed technical notes in private, if you'd like? --Blablubbs (talk) 22:27, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • Blablubbs, I am fine with it if you think you're right. Sure--I'm interested, because the master is clever and prolific. Drmies (talk) 03:51, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Drmies, thanks, I left a note on your talk page on the private wiki. I'll hold off so you can give it a read and tell me if you think I'm overlooking something. Best, --Blablubbs (talk) 11:52, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Drmies, Thanks to you and @Blablubbs for taking the time to look into this and sort the issue so promptly. There is no need to apologise - I would prefer Wikipedia to be a reliable place which it is more so thanks to your help. I look forward to starting making more contributions, do you have any advice for a ‘new’ (returning) contributer such as myself? TechGoblin (talk) 23:26, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lincolnshire edit

Hello! I'm just popping by as I've edited your contribution to the 'history' paragraph in the lead of Lincolnshire. The information you added was great, and I've kept it, but you might want to consider being more direct in your writing. It's fine to just say 'X happened in Lincolnshire', rather than 'Lincolnshire's history is important because X happened'.

Finding your 'encyclopedia voice' can take a bit of work, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Thanks for improving the article. All the best, A.D.Hope (talk) 17:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
