Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks! edit

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Thomas Morrissey (Jesuit) edit

Hi Tassedethe, I see that in September an editor called Zagred, I think, moved Thomas Morrissey (Historian) to Thomas Morrissey (Jesuit). You had put Historian in as a prep for disambiguation. I must say I was far better pleased with the former, but that might be my prejudices. It was as an author I had come across him. I notice that Zagred has frequently moved a page from Priest to Jesuit which I can understand, I suppose, but here I would be unhappy with it . He uses a very strange phrase explaining his edit as if there were some accepted norm when it is a Jesuit. As you are higher up the pecking order in Wikipedia, I thought I would raise it with you.Aineireland (talk) 22:54, 25 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Aineireland. A couple of options for you. Firstly per WP:BRD Zagred Boldly moved the page, you could Revert and add a Talk page comment explaining why (the Discuss part). That would put the onus on Zagred to argue their reasons, or to move to a full WP:RM. Or you could go straight to WP:RM yourself. Per their move comment (Jesuit) is pretty common as a disambiguator but it's by no means universal, see for instance Category:Irish Jesuits. Hope that helps. Cheers edit

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well T. MarnetteD|Talk 21:46, 16 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Jen Lee (sledge hockey) edit

Hi, thanks for creating the disambiguation page. I wonder if you can move the page to Jen Yung Lee instead? Three reasons:

  1. WP:NATURAL
  2. Personal preference: Facebook [1]
  3. More "correct" from a Chinese name's point-of-view; "Jen Yung" is a two-syllable Chinese given name

What do you think? Sinobball (talk) 07:12, 12 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately I don't know much about Chinese given name orthography. But I do note that all the references in the articles use "Jen Lee", and none use "Jen Yung Lee". That would lead to *not* using Jen Yung Lee per WP:COMMONNAME:"Although official, scientific, birth, original, or trademarked names are often used for article titles, the term or name most typically used in reliable sources is generally preferred.". On that basis I wouldn't support moving the article to Jen Yung Lee. Sorry. Tassedethe (talk) 19:31, 12 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi and thanks for catching the Ronald G/Gary Tompkins dup! Do you have any opinion about the best title to use as the merge target? I agree, and thanks—it’s unfortunate so much of that entry is unverified or deadlinked now, I think I am likely going to have to redirect and then merge the content piece by piece as I can find time to look for new sources. Hello, Tassedethe,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Xx236, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged Peter Christensen (badminton) for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. You may find our guide for writing quality articles to be extremely informative. Also, you may want to consider working on future articles in draft space first, where they cannot be deleted for lacking content.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Xx236}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Kali edit

Hello - I can see now why you put those 2x Kali singer entries at Kali (disambiguation) - because Kali (singer) redirects there. Do you think it would be better if Kali (singer) targeted Kali (name)? Or for all mononyms to be listed at Kali (disambiguation)? Regards, Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:16, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

The problem with that is that Kali (name) is not a disambiguation page, so any links to Kali (singer) would not be flagged as incorrect by the WP:DPL project. Nor would automatic tools (like DisamAssist or WPCleaner) be able to fix those links. Taking people with with partial matches to the page title, i.e. those with a given name or surname, and moving them to a separate "name" page is fine. But I feel people known solely or mostly by the mononym should remain on the dab page. Tassedethe (talk) 16:59, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

WP:NCTV edit

Tassedethe, I notice you are doing a lot of page moves of TV show articles lately. I'm just sending a reminder to make sure you are fully familiar with WP:NCTV on this – e.g. the differences between "TV series", "TV program", "game show", "talk show" and when to use which one of these for disambiguation; and when to use "by country" vs. "by year" disambiguation... I actually don't think you've made too many mistakes on this front, but with what you're doing I've caught a lot of others who have put TV show articles at the incorrect disambiguation. If you are ever unsure on your end, please feel free to drop me a line. Thanks! --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:42, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note. Mostly I'm assuming the title is currently correct, so I'm just adding an additional disambiguator (preferring the Country per WP:NCTVUS). Thanks for the offer of help. Tassedethe (talk) 19:47, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Live: Walmart Soundcheck edit

The article Live: Walmart Soundcheck has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Regarding a recently moved page edit

Hi Tassedethe,

I recently noticed that you moved Nothing Lasts Forever (EP) to Nothing Lasts Forever (Coldrain EP). This seemed to be done relatively well, until I went into the page statistics for page views. ([3]) As you may have noticed, this only recognises the page being started up recently and doesn't acknowledge the page views the article had before hand. ([4]) Page views here have consistently been nothing ever since you moved the page. May I suggest you to merge the article instead?

Many thanks. --GeorgeKnight201101 (talk) 18:44, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Merging is only appropriate if there is more than 1 existing page on a topic. The move was necessary to distinguish the two EPs Nothing Lasts Forever (Coldrain EP) and Nothing Lasts Forever (Tribe of Gypsies EP). And yes the result is that Nothing Lasts Forever (EP) will get very few views as readers will correctly go to the new title directly. Tassedethe (talk) 18:01, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Wars and the Israel-Palestine conflict...please fill out my survey? edit

Hello :) I am writing my MA dissertation on Wikipedia Wars and the Israel-Palestine conflict, and I noticed that you have contributed to those pages. My dissertation will look at the process of collaborative knowledge production on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the effect it has on bias in the articles. This will involve understanding the profiles and motivations of editors, contention/controversy and dispute resolution in the talk pages, and bias in the final article.

For more information, you can check out my meta-wiki research page or my user page, where I will be posting my findings when I am done.

I would greatly appreciate if you could take 5 minutes to fill out this quick survey before 8 August 2021.

Participation in this survey is entirely voluntary and anonymous. There are no foreseeable risks nor benefits to you associated with this project.

Thanks so much,

I have redirected all links to Albert Cheng (politician). His radio host career has more than 20 years, Chinese language media even nicknamed him Chief Executive of the morning as this radio programme was air in the morning. A tag has been placed on Thomas Audley (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Genie & Golden Years edit

Hello, Tassedethe,

When you are correcting redirects, could you give a glance at the talk pages? I've found a number of talk page redirects that were broken.

One could argue that talk pages are not necessary for a redirect but since some editor created it, I'd rather fix it than delete it. Thank you and I hope you are well! Liz Read! Talk! 22:46, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Transclusion & excerpts edit

I appreciate your efforts to reduce errors in wikipedia. Unfortunately your edits with the edit summary "Fix errors for CW project" are creating errors for articles that are transcluded, including those using {{excerpt}}. Your edit to Results of the 1880 New South Wales colonial election created an error to a large number of pages where the results are excerpted. For example at the Electoral results for the district of Canterbury your edit making the link to #East Sydney means that clicking on the link at the district results page leads nowhere as there is no section of that name on that article, rather than linking to the intended Results of the 1880 New South Wales colonial election#East Sydney. There is nothing wrong with using the article title as part of a link to a section, but if you think it improves wikipedia in some way, you should mark the text using the markup <includeonly></includeonly> rather than deleting it and creating an error.

Which brings me to the other type of error at 1870 Braidwood colonial by-election. The article is excerpted to Electoral results for the district of Braidwood at which it includes a link to the election, consistent with every other election excerpted on that page. In order to avoid the above nonsense <includeonly> tags are used in the title so that the link only appears on the page that transcludes the results. Your edit to 1870 Braidwood colonial by-election created a misnested tag when none existed before by deleting the the second of that markup. I appreciate that you are acting in good faith and may be unaware of transclusions and excerpts. Ironically the main purpose of using transclusion is to reduce errors and attribution issues where the same information is presented in different ways. Transclusions can be a bit technical and if you wish to discuss the intricacies of those, feel free to ping me. --Find bruce (talk) 06:43, 15 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I am using a tool Wikipedia:WPCleaner and the parts of the edits that you are referring to are being automatically applied by that software. I will ask the developer to look into it. Tassedethe (talk) 19:04, 15 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
