Yein-- I feel like you could elaborate on the difference in the presentation of female rappers of color (women in the spotlight) versus women who are video vixens (assigned to the background.) I'm sure there is also a lot of overlap there. 1)For my research I would like to focus on how the media portray black women in the industry. There are a total of six female rappers I would like to focus on; Queen Latifah, DA Brat, and Missy Elliott juxtaposed Foxy Brown, Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj. For these women in particular the majority of the media focus was on their body image, and other personal life style.The focus was not so much on their music. During my research I want to see if there are any similarities the artist share, Their recognition in the industry, and what each artist have contribute to the culture of hip hop. 2) the gap between female and male artist in mainstream hip-hop 3) Who as he power the artist or the record label?
I think that this is a great idea for a page. The artists that you have lined up to discuss are good examples of female representation in hip hop culture and how polar opposite these artists are. Not only this, but there are many examples of women in the media solely getting credit for how they look rather than what they are actually doing. I also agree with Yein that it's a great idea to do a comparison with female rappers and video vixens; definitely some similarities there! Hey Tasha! So I think that we are working together now that we are all partnered for our wiki project and I have to say that I am really happy this is your topic because I think it is an important one. It looks to me like this first paragraph that you have is your introductory one...? You might want to reword some of the sentences that state "in this article..." or "the purpose of this article..." and stuff like that because generally speaking that is how you would introduce a topic in a paper where you would be making an argument, so you might want to gauge it to sound more informational...like in an encyclopedia entry. In terms of structure and information that you might want to include moving forward, I think you can/should totally use some of the articles from the anthology that we read for last week that speak to how some of the representations and hyper sexualization of WOC in hip hop -- specially how these images are rooted in the history of black women in America. I am thinking specifically about Kaila Adia Story's "Performing Venus ~ From Hottentot to Video Vixen: The Historical Legacy of Black Female Body Commodification" (page 235)...you could use some of the historical facts she brings up in like a "History" subsection for your page. Also, thinking more about your top specifically in the present moment, Jocelyn A. Wilson's "Top Drills, Strip Clubs, And Representation in the Media: Cultural Reflections and Criticisms from the POV of an African American Female Southern Hip-Hop Scholar," would be a good article to pull facts from about the specific criticisms that feminists have about WOC representations in hip hop. Since this is an encyclopedia article you could probably have a description of how women are presented in hip hop culture in a positive and negative sense in the article's introduction and then have a subsection entitled "Criticisms" where you could bring up specific scholars/peoples that have spoken out against this representation, but to balance it you might want to find articles (if there are any) where females from within hip hop who do not feel as thought they are being exploited speak to the benefits of their position (e.g. capital gain, agency/reclaiming their sexuality, etc.) that way your article becomes more balanced in terms of the perspectives offered.
