Wikipedia and YOUR History: Taking Control of the Internet

See you at the Laurel Pool Room, 9th and Main Street, Laurel, MD on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:00 PM EST. See http://www.meetup.com/Wikimedia-DC/events/205494212/ for more information. Geraldshields11 (talk) 02:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

It seems that 101.160.175.244 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) has been IP hopping. 124.181.107.97 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is likely another of .244's sock IPs. Most of the articles .244 edited probably could use protection. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 08:31, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

I just prefer David to do it?

I didn't suggest any such thing. You might want to brush up on your basic comprehension skills. I've done a fair few ITN image updates in my time, and I've never pinged David to do it for me. Thanks. Stephen 09:25, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

@Stephen: Sorry for the misunderstanding. Nastiness aside – I'm confident in my comprehension skills, thanks – I meant something closer to at least someone saying "oh, it's fine we have plenty of admins who know how to do it, but I just prefer David to do it" like Stephen suggested some might feel. It was obvious from your comment that you knew how to, and often do, swap the images, when time and resources permit. But it also seemed clear to me that you were saying, in general, that knowing how to swap the image may not be the issue and that -- in general, not necessarily personally -- there may be a preference to have David do the task because he has Commons adminship. Likewise, in general, time and resources may limit someone's ability to swap the image. And, while I'm here, to clarify, I don't have a problem with either stance, and particularly the latter; my frustration in response was due to the fact that I already mentioned early on that someone may just not have time to, or really just not want to, swap the image. There's no issue with that because this is a volunteer project. -- tariqabjotu 12:22, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. And my comment was uncalled for, apologies. Stephen 01:26, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Yemen events

Salam Tariq. I have just found that you are active in Wikipedia:In_the_news/Candidates#.5BPosted.5D_Ongoing:_Yemeni_Crisis. I am happy to meet you again. If you remember we work together with several other users to make Islam article an FA in 2007 and 2008. ;-)

By the way, I think Aftermath of the 2014–15 Yemeni coup d'état is not suitable for the events. The Saudi Arabia has launched a military operation and may invaded Yemen after fall of the Aden. So we should find a title which fits the crisis. Please participate in this discussion. --Seyyed(t-c) 02:43, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Apologies for the spam

I've been going through old TFA temporary cropped images that never got deleted and nominating them for speedy deletion. I accidentally left Twinkle's "notify original author" option on, and spammed your talk page with a bunch of notices. I've now deleted the notices and will make sure not to send any more your way. -IagoQnsi (talk)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Chokri Belaid ITN cropped.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Chokri Belaid ITN cropped.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Tariqabjotu. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Tariqabjotu.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Unprotect Template:Cite paper?

Hi Tariqabjotu. Template:Cite paper was moved and a redirect created in its place, and therefore full protection as a high-risk template is no longer applicable. I've been working to effect the adjustment of the protection level for template redirects in this situation. As the administrator who last protected the page, could you unprotect it, please? Thanks in advance for your help. --Bsherr (talk) 05:54, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Your Recent move of the Border wall shutdown.

You recently closed a WP:RM, Talk:2018–19 United States federal government shutdown#Requested move 11 January 2019, and I feel this was done in haste. Several editors who would have otherwise commented on the matter were thus not given a chance. I feel the move (nor the second move) was not necessary. Would you consider reversing your decision and moving back to United States federal government shutdown of 2018-2019? ―Matthew J. Long -Talk- 04:44, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

An entire week had elapsed, and there was plenty of support for the move, which follows guidelines. -- tariqabjotu 12:26, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Tariqabjotu, I am not disagreeing that there was plenty of support, but my concerns went unaddressed. For such a highly trafficked page, I do not feel a week would be sufficient. Thank you for your response. ―Matthew J. Long -Talk- 17:36, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
