Another Esperanzial note... edit

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Thanks for clearing up the Manitowoc/Two Rivers "suburb" line. I tripped over that in my last reading of the page, but I had no clue how to correct it. There's no way Two Rivers is a suburb of Manitowoc. Jachim69 07:41, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Northern Ontario edit

I'll rewrite it to be a little more clear, but the part of Nipissing that lays below the "dividing line" is still considered part of Northern Ontario, because it's part of Nipissing. Bearcat 07:33, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

The green areas were already explained in the article; they're treated as part of Northern Ontario in some circumstances (FedNor, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines) because they're a bit of a transition zone economically and culturally between the south and the north, but they're not considered part of Northern Ontario geographically. Category:Midian et. al edit

Hello, TShilo12. I would like your opinion and feedback regarding a discussion I am having with Briangotts here about various categories including Category:Midian and Category:Edom. This issue is whether the categories themselves should be subcategories of Category:Torah people and Category:Torah places, or whether just the articles which actually are about Category:Torah people, such as the parent article Edom and Esau, should be tagged. Further explanation and a place to both voice your opinion and vote may be found on the talk page of Category:Midian. Thank you for your time and input. -- Avi 19:35, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I didn't see the discussion behind why this image was deleted, but just so you know, I copied it to nl:Afbeelding:Regent-Parrot-238.jpg. If it was legitimately deleted, I'll leave its deletion from the Dutch wikipedia in your capable hands. Tomertalk 01:50, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

That image was deleted because it was licensed under cc-by-nd-nc, not . (That was how it was tagged when you copied it to NL, but it was wrong.) NL doesn't seem to have a template for the correct license; I don't know whether they accept noncommercial photos anyway. dbenbenn | talk 01:57, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:IdP.PNG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:IdP.PNG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 18:05, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, with regards to replacement I was mostly thinking along the lines of "drawing" a new map, there is not a whole lot of complex topography in this case after all, the biggest trick would be to get the longditudes, latitudes, distances and proportions correct, the islands themseles are basicaly just blobs on the map anyway. --Sherool (talk) 16:08, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

EC Website edit

Hello,

Thank you for the message.

I looked at your pictures. The subjects are good but they contain distractions. But the real secret is in post edit. I cleaned up the [Synagog photo] in GIMP. Your pictures are fine, they are just raw (not cleaned up) and that is the difference. If you saw the raws of mine you would not be impressed. Even the photos I have are poor, just as you pointed out, because it is winter. It sucks the life out of photos, well at least photos that are not nature based.

As far as the Mosque, there is no active site right now. That will hopefully be fixed soon. Also there are no photos of it because it is not green out yet (and the old photos I have do not show the whole building).

I have tons of photos on CD, I should look through and see what I have on Chippewa.

Finally, is appropriate to answer a message in usertalk within your own usertalk or on the usertalk of the sender?

Thanks,

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1 edit

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

YOU will love this request... edit

Hi Tomer: I have received the following request concerning Rabbi Yaakov Meidan:

Rav Meidan, now a Rosh Yeshiva in Yeshivat Har Etzion, recently requested that his name be spelled in English publications as "Yaaqov Medan." As you can imagine, this spelling garners much fewer Google hits than when spelled with a k. Should his article, and all mentions of him, be changed to "Yaaqov" in deference to him as a self-identifying entity, or not? I'm not familiar enough with WP:NC to know the answer. 'Would you be a dear, and fetch me that pen? Thanks.' edit

Tomer, thank you for your comment. I am not an expert on subjunctive mood, having learned it by example and usage in ostensive manner. When I bring up items about this topic to my friends in daily life, their response is 'how else would you express it?'. The keyword is "would", in my opinion. Here is my justification for the classification:

  1. A virtual occurrence - Wife A asked, but A did not know outcome
    • A: Would you be a dear, and fetch me that pen?
  2. Husband B hears and fetches (no longer virtual, is now real). B hands over pen as the outcome.
    • A: Thanks.
    • Now B knows he is dear to A. Another close call for the marriage.

So 'would', 'should', 'could', 'might' get lumped into subjunctive usage, in my book; they signal a virtual existence. No probability of occurrence is assigned, merely possibility.

But 'will', 'shall', 'can', 'may' signal a different usage, to me. In this case, they are uttered in the present as an expectation for the future, with a high probability of occurrence. Their usage can be countered with a subjunctive statement.

Thus to me, subjunctive trumps both imperative and indicative.

C mutters to D:

  • "It might dangerous to stick up your head"

D sticks up his bare head, and a bullet twangs against his forehead, stunning him. A, B, and C can only laugh. D is rueful. Ernie Pyle documented an occurrence like this in World War II.

Thus in my view, only action trumps the subjunctive.

Any insight you might have would be welcome. --Ancheta Wis 11:47, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I dunno about the grammatical aspect, but I think somehow only action trumps the subjunctive might be an interesting insight on how to spend ones life. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 22:34, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2 edit

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

WP:WPWI, HollyAm, etc. edit

Hello Tomer. Have you heard from HollyAm at all? I'm assuming she's taking a wikibreak, like she did from 2002 to May 2005.

I saw on her talk page that you were wondering how the Recent Changes in Wisconsin-related articles list was updated; it's something that I created back in August 2005. Its sort of clunky, but it works and doesn't take too much work to update. I go to the Template:WikiProject Wisconsin page, then click on "What links here". I then copy everything that gets spit out, and paste it into an Excel spreadsheet. I automatically remove all the "talk:"'s, leaving the articles, categories, etc. I then sort the list by type and alphabetize it, pasting the results in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wisconsin/Wisconsin_recent_changes. Insert the headings, and voila. Updated list. Now that I'm back, I'll start doing this once a week again.

Also, a very-belated congrats on your RfA. Sorry I wasn't around to support you in it, though I can see you really didn't need it.

Cheers. --BaronLarf 16:49, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Could you take a look at the first sentence in this section? It claims that Persians are descendants of some "Aryan tribes" migrating from Central Asia. Sounds like outdated racial theories to me. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3 edit

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Admin help needed at WikiProject Judaism edit

Hi: Recently, User:Ems tried to archive the talk at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism by "moving" the entire page and thereby losing a few years worth of edit history in the process. I have tried to correct it but it needs the intervention of an admin to REVERT back the entire process so that the edit history will show up where it is supposed to be (namely on the history of the main talk page and not in "archive 9"). Tomer, I may need your help again. edit

You know, I might need your help again. What times are you on IRC? Yesterday, I unwittingly stepped on a Wikipedian "landmine" so to speak. Now ESkog won't even talk to me on IRC. A few hours before I went to bed last night, I sent him an invitation to talk in my private chatroom; he didn't respond. Before that, he even said I could speak with him on IRC or his talk page, but he seems to ignore me on IRC, and hasn't replied to my latest reply on his talk page as of yet. Is there a "festering" in progress? I hope not, so either way, I ask if you can help restore the cordial and warm atmosphere of our mentorship again. My efforts haven't seemed fruitful enough.

All I did was upload ESkog's photo and ask if it was ok to have it here and place it on his userpage but he reacted like he saw an evil apparition. This was totally unexpected, and he told me he had discussions several times about people's personal info; I didn't remember ESkog talking about how he wants his privacy in particular, but he said he told me about that too. Oh, why couldn't my memories of this discussion resurface before uploading his photo? If they have, I wouldn't have uploaded it in the first place. Seriously.

Now not only the mentorship, but my life as a Wikipedian seems so fragile now, and there's no hope of that fragile aura lifting anytime soon; he said he doesn't "see this probation ever ending." This means, seemingly, even if I make 11,999 good edits down the line, if I forget about those probation terms and unwittingly release even an inkling of personal info on the 12,000th edit, the mentorship ends, I get blocked indefinitely, and probably won't even be allowed back under a completely different username (on the pain of a CheckUser check, an indef-block of also that account, and a revert of all of that username's edits, even if they were as obviously good as correcting spelling errors.)

What over-the-counter memory supplements do you suggest? I need to start taking those right away! PS: Like I said, would you please help me in what I hope to restore? Hope you talk to ESkog sometime. --Shultz IV 13:28, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Polynesian Project edit

Hi. Yep I am a New Zealander and a Polynesian too. I have seen 'Tshilo12' in a lot of the history lists. I had a look at Sala y Gomez. I couldn't resist attempting to tidy it up a bit. Actually I am pretty busy on Polynesian mythology here on Wikipedia. It was a total mess and is slowly becoming less of one. User:Bucketsofg have been working on it for two or three months - a loose collaboration that began after a rather hasty decision on my and User:Grutness parts to nominate 50 p. myth stubs for deletion in March. I am more into the mythology and the languages rather than geography etc. But not averse to helping where I can altho I have my work cut out trying to fix P. Mythology. For some examples of what I've been up to lately check out Kupe and Rangi and Papa. I was also hoping to get a whole heap of articles going on the Māori wikipedia even tho I tend to get dis-encouraged by what I take to be nitpicky vibes I get from some of the users there. I feel as a Māori speaker I have a lot to contribute so I will just have to get into it. Kahuroa 06:13, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deletionism facing (Judaism) articles edit

Hi Tomer: I have just placed the following on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism. Shabbat Shalom, IZAK 09:17, 19 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shalom to everyone: There is presently a very serious phenomenon on Wikipedia that effects all articles. Let's call it "The New Deletionism". There are editors on Wikipedia who want to cut back the number of "low quality" articles EVEN IF THEY ARE ABOUT NOTABLE TOPICS AND SUBJECTS by skipping the normal procedures of placing cleanup or cite tags on the articles' pages and instead wish to skip that process altogether and nominate the articles for a vote for deletion (VfD). This can be done by any editor, even one not familiar with the subject. The implication/s for all articles related to Jews, Judaism, and Israel are very serious because many of these articles are of a specilaized nature that may or may not be poorly written yet have important connections to the general subjects of Jews, Judaism, and Israel, as any expert in that subject would know.
Two recent examples will illustrate this problem:
1) See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zichron Kedoshim, Congregation where a notable Orthodox synagogue was deleted from Wikipedia. The nominator gave as his reason: "Scarce material available on Google, nor any evidence in those results of notability nor any notable size." Very few people voted and only one person objected correctly that: "I've visited this synagogue, know members, and know that it is a well established institution" which was ignored and the article was deleted. (I was unaware of the vote).
2) See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Berel Wein where the nominator sought to delete the article about Rabbi Berel Wein because: "It looks like a vanity project to me. While he does come up with many Google hits, they are all commercial in nature. The article is poorly written and reads like a commercial to me." In the course of a strong debate the nominator defended his METHOD: "... what better way to do that than put it on an AfD where people who might know more about the subject might actually see it and comment rather than slapping a NPOV and cleanup template on and waiting for someone to perhaps come across it." But what if no-one noticed it in time and it would have gone the same way as "Congregation Zichron Kedoshim"? Fortunately, people noticed it, no-one agreed with the nominator and the article was kept.
As we all know Googling for/about a subject can determine its fate as an article, but this too is not always a clear-cut solution. Thus for example, in the first case, the nominator saw almost nothing about "Congregation Zichron Kedoshim" on Google (and assumed it was unimportant) whereas in the second case the nominator admitted that Berel Wein "does come up with many Google hits" but dismissed them as "all commercial in nature". So in one case too few Google hits was the rationale for wanting to delete it and in the other it was too many hits (which were dismissed as "too commercial" and interpreted as insignificant), all depending on the nominators' POV of course.
This problem is compounded because when nominators don't know Hebrew or know nothing about Judaism and its rituals then they are at a loss, they don't know variant transliterated spellings, and compounding the problem even more Google may not have any good material or sources on many subjects important to Jewish, Judaic, and Israeli subjects. Often Judaica stores may be cluttering up the search with their tactics to sell products or non-Jewish sites decide to link up to Biblical topics that appear "Jewish" but are actually missionary sites luring people into misinformation about the Torah and the Tanakh, so while Googling may yield lots of hits they may mostly be Christian-oriented and even be hostile to the Judaic perspective.
Therefore, all editors and contributors are requested to be aware of any such attempts to delete articles that have a genuine connection to any aspect of Jews, Judaism and Israel, and to notify other editors.
Please, most importantly, place alerts here in particular so that other editors can be notified.
Thank you for all your help and awareness. IZAK 08:43, 19 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shira Hadasha edit

Shevua Tov and Chodesh Tov, Tomer,

Tomer, if you take a look at my edits, you'll that the overwhelming majority of the articles I've added content to, including Passover, Passover Seder, Korbanot, Amidah, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, Avi Weiss, Birkat Hamazon, List of Jewish Prayers and Blessings, Zugot, and much more, makes no mention of any particular style of tefilla. I've edited on a variety of general Jewish subjects. I believe you've spoken without actually looking at what I've done.

If you look at the Partnership Minyan and Shira Hadasha articles, they are both notable and well-sourced. "Shira Hadasha" has thousands of Google hits, and the Forward article in the Partnership Minyan article quotes leading OU and YU figures discussing it, not just the usual figures from JOFA. Moreover, a number of related articles like the ones on Jewish feminism, Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance, and Blu Greenberg weren't started by me: I'm hardly the only one creating content on these subjects here.

I respectfully suggest that you're not basing your opinions on the merits of my edits. I invite you to examine their merits more closely. --Shirahadasha 02:26, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tomer, Regarding your reply

Hey Shirahadasha...I wasn't making any judgments about you or your edits. My comments above, copied here by someone else, were in reponse to someone else' statement that you didn't appear to be new to wikipedia. The only judgment I made was that you and Anystat were one and the same, and that that was why your edits didn't appear to have been made by someone new to wikipedia. As for whether or not the Minyan Shivyoni Hilchati stuff is noteworthy, as I've made clear elsewhere, my concern regarding them is exclusively in the interest of ensuring that WP:NPOV#Undue weight is followed. Tomertalk 23:27, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

With regard to the comment below, given that you're not making any "judgments about you or your edits", would you be so kind as to clarify your comments re "POV-pushers" etc.?

Please review my comments above at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism#Self-promotion... I thought this subject had been dealt with already, but as happens so often when it comes to POV-pushers, that sentiment was apparently premature... :-\ Tomertalk 08:05, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just a friendly reminder. Thanks. --Shirahadasha 04:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tomer, as I recall the two principle difficulties with the "Minyan Shivyoni Hilchati" article were a poor choice of name and poor placement ("minyan" was a bad idea and showed ignorance about Wikipedia's structure.) I believe these issues have been addressed.

It should be clear there's no POV forking. "Orthodox Judaism" and "Reform Judaism" are in some sense POV forks of "Judaism", and for that matter "Judaism" and "Hinduism" are POV forks of "religion", but surely a distinct approach to worship is a phenomenon in its own right, not just a POV fork of the next category up.

I acknowledge not every variant form of worship deserves a Wikipedia entry, and there's a legitimate discussion to be had about distinctiveness and notability. As to distinctiveness, the JOFA definition quoted in the article makes clear the phenomenon is clearly defined with agreed on standards and practices. As to notability, I appreciate that there is no article on your home synagogue Temple Shalom of Eau Claire, Wisconsin -- not every minyan get an entry -- but notability is due not only to the size and number of minyanim set up on an ongoing basis, (admittedly only a few dozen at most). It's also due to the numbers and prominence of the people and organizations who have talked about the concept and the number of articles and discussions they have engendered, as the sources cited in the articles plus those thousands of Google hits show. If balance isn't adequate, it can be addressed. "Shira Hadasha" and "Partnership Minyan" are different concepts in something like the way "Yeshiva University" and "Modern Orthodox Judaism" are, and both are notable in their own right. --Shirahadasha 04:11, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tomer,

I suggest we tone things down a bit. The article may or may not be notable, but surely there's no issue of vanity. The article isn't promoting me, any individual I know, or anything I own or control or have a big role in. If you made an article about Temple Sholom, it may or may not be notable, but I think even your webmaster role wouldn't be enough to make it fall anywhere near the definition of vanity. You may have a warm regard for Temple Sholom, but it's just too much of a stretch even to think of it as being an extension of you. Same here. It's possible I came up with a naive choice of username and should change it yet again to something more neutral,

I'm also not understanding why you have difficulty with the issue of definiteness. Perhaps we are focusing on different aspects. I've been focusing on whether worship services are run according to consistent standards. The JOFA definition is fairly precise, sufficiently so that a Gabbai (or Gabbaiah) could use it and know how to set up a service, exactly what should be said, and exactly what parts of the service can be led by women and what by men. In this sense there is definiteness.

You may perhaps be focusing on the place they have within Judaism, how it relates to what's going on elsewhere. Are they Orthodox? Are they Conservative? Are they something in between? The Forward article quotes Orthodox figures who doubt whether the approach will ultimately be accepted as a legitimate variant within Orthodoxy. And certainly not everyone who comes to these things considers themselves Orthodox -- there's a large contingent of Conservadox/Conservative/Reform people who come for a variety of reasons. But Wikipedia certainly need take no position on this issue. An SUV is a clear concept regardless of whether one thinks it should be classified as a car or a truck.

As to notability, there's an article on the Union for Traditional Judaism. 787 Google hits. But it has an important place in denominational history, marking the struggle for self-definition on the right wing of Conservative Judaism as mainstream Conservativism moved towards the left. Phenomena like Avi Weiss' Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, JOFA, etc. mark varying degrees of disaffection with the mainstream on Orthodoxy's left as even MO moves rightward. The diverge of the two mainstreams has left an increasing gap. Perhaps one or the other group will widen a bit, perhaps a nondenominational continuum of unaffiliated groups will form, or perhaps there will be some sort of convergence and a new denomination will form between the two. It remains to be seen.

For a variety of personal reasons an approach that attempts to respect a rigorous approach to halacha while feeling more kindly towards inclusiveness appeals to me, although I make no claims to living a perfect life myself. It's definitely not for everyone. My personal view is that halacha is kind of grey -- the sources have various seeds in different directions that could potentially sprout into huge trees, but it can be read as black or white if one feels strongly enought about it, although I don't think either black or white is a fair read. I'm personally comfortable with most aspects of the Orthodox service, would be comfortable adding a prayer or two rather than change most things (although I think women should thank G-d for not being men.) I'm personally not interesting in a religion where people simply make things up as they go along. But I absolutely hate places where they put women in things that look like cages, and don't think there's any justification for reading certain things as expansively as has often done or other things as narrowly. --Shirahadasha 01:58, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tomer, wanted to bring to your attention a recent article in the RCA's journal Tradition (they're a year behind, so it really is recent), see [1]. Here's the abstract:

For many women, exclusion from meaningful participation in the public service, including aliyyot to the Torah, is the starkest and most grating example of what they perceive as Orthodoxy’s insufficient sensitivity to their needs as spiritual beings. Rabbi Mendel Shapiro, arguing that innovation helps insure a system’s adaptability to new challenges while still balancing stability and flexibility, suggested that contemporary realities create many halakhic opportunities for women to be called up to the Torah and receive aliyyot. R. Shapiro is not the only one to have made this argument, but his article in an Orthodox journal sponsored by Edah has been identified most frequently and prominently as the supporting evidence for a small number of Orthodox congregations having adopted this practice, most notably Congregation Shira Hadasha in Jerusalem. Both for its inherent interest as an attempt to mine sources creatively and for its impact on the current Orthodox world, R. Shapiro’s analysis deserves serious consideration. (emphasis added)

The article isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of Mendel Shapiro's or Shira Hadasha's approach. But it does make clear that the RCA regards the phenomenon itself as not only a notable issue but an important one, one deserving of serious consideration and careful scholarly treatment in its leading journal. I hope this description, which is clearly a reliable source as to what a large segment of the English-speaking Orthodox world regards as notable, puts an end to any disagreement about the notability of the phenomenon and its appropriateness for inclusion in Wikipedia. All the best, --Shirahadasha 19:07, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't just take other people's word for it: I checked the page myself and saw that not only did the page have a copyright notice on it, that your copy and paste of the external source even had the "print this page" link still in it. Hebrew and Yiddish are [primarily] languages edit

As you've recently made numerous edits to "disambiguate" my use of Hebrew and Yiddish in the wiki internal-link syntax for the respective languages, I'd like to comment: Technically you're correct, even though there are apparently redirects for both when an editor fails to write the full form, i.e. Hebrew and Yiddish . We can surmise that the redirect was set up because others, besides myself, don't always take the time or make the effort to write the full form. BTW, are you running a bot to perform the "<dab>"?

I do consider the value of disambiguation in running text for the names of languages which are also adjectives for geopolitical entities and nations, e.g. English, French, Polish vs. English-language, French-language, Polish-language, etc. Thanks to your pointing out that I haven't been consistent in writing this way; I'll endeavor to do so from now on.

However, in similar running text, the above does not argue for adding "-language" to Hebrew and Yiddish -- which are essentially the names of these languages as well as their adjective form (in the great majority of instances). We hardly need be reminded that there was never a "Yidland" or that Israel is the sole sovereign state where Hebrew (not "Israelish") is the primary (though not sole) official language.

So I hardly think any ambiguity is involved in writing "Hebrew" and "Yiddish", such that text editing of this sort would be superfluous, besides cumbersome and intrusive. (And BTW, all my ancestors come from the unnamed "Yidland" and I myself live in Israel :-) -- Cheers, Deborahjay 09:52, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Update to clarify the above: Having read your response at my User Talk page, Tomer, I can see that my discussion above was oriented toward the use of "language name" vs. "language name_language" in text editing. Your explanation of disambig for this in Wikipedia linkage was certainly helpful in providing me with some understanding of the whys and wherefores of this issue in theory and practice, that had previously eluded me for the most part. Thanks! -- Deborahjay 23:42, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orthodoxy "founded" issue edit

Hi Tomer! The discussion on Talk:Judaism on this issue seems to be heating up a bit. Both Conservative and right-wing Orthodox Judaism have a mutual interest in presenting themselves as the only two possible traditional alternatives. Haredi says if you're not a right-wing fundie you're Conservative and Conservative says if you're not Conservative you're a right-wing fundie. They agree. And both have distaste for a position in between. But I think Daniel Sperber's positions generally have a lot of merit. You're welcome to come out and blast it if you prefer. --Shirahadasha 05:41, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I inserted the comment that I did about Reform Judaism into Talk:Judaism because of the above comment. I did not see the word "traditional" in the above comment beforehand; otherwise, my comment would likely not have appeared. — Rickyrab | Talk 02:57, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

A short Esperanzial update edit

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regional vocabularies of American English edit

Hi Tomer, JackLumber here. I was just puttering around with the above-mentioned article---much of a fixer-upper indeed---when I came across your suggestions on the talk page thereof. Yes, most of what you said is correct. Just one thing---when you noticed those blunders (such as powwow listed as Chinook), WHY DIDN'T YOU FIX THE ARTICLE YOURSELF?!? That's Wikipedia, that's just the way it works ;-) I noticed the errors under "Pacific Northwest" about 6 months after your post---and before reading your post! Anyways, wanna help cleanup the "North" section? (In the meantime I completely changed the layout). As for the "What kind of American English do you speak?" quiz, mischief night, toilet papering, cruller, sneakers, cellar, rotary, gut, sunshower, carriage, /ɺut/, /ant/, and /'mɛɺi/-/'mæɺi/-/'meəɺi/ are "Yankee" (meaning "Northeastern" in this context, although some of these terms are local to some areas while others are widely used throughout the U.S.; I believe that soda is also considered "Yankee"); devil beating his wife, catty-corner, buggy, crip course, y'all, icing, rolling, and coke are "Dixie"; devil's night, frosting, drinking fountain, and kitty-corner are "Upper Midwestern." Incidentally, I speak 45% Yankee (and I say basement, not cellar), 40% General American English, and 10% Upper Midwestern. (5% unspecified!) But my American is way too polluted anyhow. List of Puerto Ricans edit

One of the main concerns about the "list" is that it is getting out of control and that many names of people who have only had their "15 minutes of fame" or simply are non-notables are being added. I propose that we set up guidelines as to who should be admitted with a clear definition as to the terms "notable" and "fame". I am calling upon the parties interested to express their opinion and to help develope these guidelines. I believe that after we take a vote and reach a censensus, said guidelines should be followed and posted either on the article or the articles talk page. We need your help. Israeli members of Knesset discussion edit

About the criteria, you are right, and I have already replied to you in the discussion. About your accusations of gross misunderstanding of history, I just have to say that it is true that Israeli Arabs are Israeli citizens. There's no doubt about it. In the same way, from that point of view, if someone was born in The Netherlands in 1941, that person would be German, isn't it? They live in an occupied territory, such fact doesn't change their nationality, that's the point you seem to ignore, a paper won't make them Israelis, actually, they will be second-class citizens forever, since they are not jews. And, with due respect, it is a bit strange to see your opinion about several independence movements and not making the same judgement to the Palestinian one. Just one more thing, I've met several Palestinian politicians and diplomats in my life, perhaps you didn't, so, don't think your Jewish ancestry, which I respect very much, puts you in a better position to discuss this issue and grants you the right of being arrogant and claiming that I ignore historical facts. Need administrator help in Temple in Jerusalem

Hi Izak,

A user by the name of Biblical1 has completely rewritten the Temple in Jerusalem article multiple times, presenting some rather speculatve views of a few contemporary thinkers as objective fact and scholarly consensus. At this point, would it be possible for you or some other administrator to freeze the page and guide a discussion on the Talk page? Thanks, --Shirahadasha 04:46, 27 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

jerusalem temple edit

Hi,

I would like to direct you to the Jerusalem temple discussion. Shirahadasha requested a complaint based on 'speculatve views of a few contemporary thinkers'. If you follow the discussion, the professors were classified as "contemporary" because of their practicing university, I believe Shirahadasha also classified one as contemporary because she was an 'Executive Director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies.'

There were no grounds for it being speculative as the information came from published works distributed to religious studies scholars at public institutions, I just so happen to be in a biblical studies class. I find it disturbing that people can edit articles and information based on hollow allegations. I think Shirahadasha is like many other users who "guard" articles to see if they conflict with their prophetic view of history (or their view of history that arises from religious scripture). This in turn means they alter facts that conflict with their personal view, in which case they resort to attacking the sexual preference of the author of the source.

Shirahadasha even went as far to say "biblical scholarship(a form of religion studies) is not npov"...

Religious studies :

The multi-disciplinary, secular study of religion. It is distinct from theology and incorporates multiple disciplines and methodologies including the sociology, psychology, philosophy, and history of religion in addition to comparative religion
