Lexus LS article also needs improvement IMO

The history section seems to be poorly written. The awards section also needs work. Major improvement of current 2007- LS is needed. Safety, performance, styling, competition.

S-Series

I am not sure...I was under the impression that the Aristo/GS is related to the Crown, and shares the same platform, but all the articles I have read suggest that the new LS is an 'all-new platform' with of course the stretch for the LWB. Alright, thanks for your quick response. I think we might need to add dates after the mention of the LS being related to the Crown and the S-Series platform. The 1990s LS, up to '03 and now '06 was certainly related to the Corwn and the S-Series platform. But the new LS (2007-) may differ, espcially since Lexus is now sold in Japan as Lexus. I will do my best. In fact, after anetode informed me about flickr's CC-licensed images, I went to great lengths to replace/add numerous images, including several promophotos, with flickr images. Only then did people begin deleting them due to the post-May 2005 "commercial use" clause, leading me in multiple cases to have no choice but to revert to promophotos. 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:LS_first_gen_testing.jpg - there is no other way to get a photo of the LS during testing, as it was top-secret.

2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lexus_lineup_early_90's.jpg - it is very, very difficult to get a photo of the entire early 90's Lexus lineup together; these cars are very rare, including some at the time, and all of them as of now (together esp.).

The My.IS site is very significant, more so than many of the other sites on the list. I beg to differ, it states that this is a copyrighted publicity photograph which qualifies as fair-use because "a free image could not be created to replace it." I also added "No free-use images available as of yet; vehicle still under wraps." There are no publicly available photos of this vehicle, all that exists to wikipedians is this officially released teaser shot, at least until sometime in 2007. Let me clarify. You're right--so far as the zooming features of the SVG are. What I was referring to was the design and layout. The logo listed at 'brands of the world' is out of date, that is a poorly done version of the 1989 logo. The dealers and other areas since now emphasize the Circle-L first and foremost, the titles second. The 'brands of the world' version is badly cropped in that the bottom of the letters are chopped off, at least when it appears on the article page. Not to mention that the Circle-L is way too close to the letters.

I am EXCEPTIONALLY frustrated because I do not have Adobe Illustrator, nor can I afford it right now. I have spent hours upon hours trying to find freeware/shareware programs that would allow me to create an SVG. I have followed your insistence on the SVG issue, which I acknowledge is the wave of the wikipedia future standard, to wit's end. I have downloaded literally dozens of SVG-capable programs, finding in vain that they do not support transparency and other features. Only Inkspace seems to be capable but I have not yet figured it out. I have pounded my desk in frustration that what should take 5 minutes has taken over 5 hours with no end in sight.

THANK YOU for ending my frustration. The logo you have created is more accurate, more nicely sized, and nicely labeled as well. I will now add it into the article.

BTW I use Firefox not IE and I have not been able to zoom, but Firefox supports SVG AFAIK and I never see any white or gray boxes, the transparency works.

I use Inkscape. I used to use firefox, but I stopped liking it. But anyhow if you have any questions about Inkscape don't be afraid to ask. I only use a friend's Illustrator sometimes to convert eps to basic svg, then I open that in Inkscape and edit. I'm sure there is freeware/open source which can do this, and I will look into this this evening. I will also look into your new logo. --Indolences 17:26, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestions. I would like to know how to make transparent backgrounds in Inkscape. At this present time, I think the current logo is good enough. I have tested the above prototype logo and it isn't good enough by far, and the contrast with the rest of the article is not sufficiently clear IMO. Yes, it has the same general shape, but it has the proper 3d details that the real logo has. Would it be easier if I separated out the individual components into separate files and they could be combined as layers for the final SVG (assuming that can be done)? No it's not. Strangely doing a search for 'Lexus' leads to a different logo, here, similar to the older logo, here. The logo used on the article is the more commonly used one these days, but it has existed since the launch of the division.

Anyhow, I don't have Illustrator and Inkscape is a mystery to me, although I have downloaded it. It seems like this SVG business is more trouble than it's worth if you can't easily edit logos to keep them current and accurately representative. I don't suppose converting the PNG to an EPS would make a difference--make it easier to edit in Illustrator? The image is fairly straightforward, basically the 3D effect is comprised of an inner and outer layer to the logo components, plus the shadowing effect. Enigma3542002 06:33, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

EPS is just another vector format, like svg. Usually one does not just "convert from *raster* to *vector* format. using the trace tool (shift alt b) one can trace an image, but the results for something like this logo are usually not pretty (I tried). also be sure to turn the "smooth" box off. Here's something I used that tool for: NOTE: This is no longer true as I have replaced this image with one taken from a PDF.

it's got lots of round in it, just as the original. For more complicated images, one must redraw the image (In inkscape), using the raster as a guide. consider this:

I had to redraw it, line by line. I tend to just draw a bunch of straight lines then use the simplify tool (ctrl L) and round it out.

I'll give the lexus thing another go on the morrow, but I don't see what the big deal is about having the newest slightly different logo... Is this one of those pet-peeve things which only you will notice?

The 3d can be done with just having similar letters (double click with the edit path nodes (f2) tool and the letters or the emblem should break apart.. I'm not sure about the letters but I know the L will... I'm talking about the svg btw) and resizing them (be sure to have the "lock" thing on so it will be proportioned) and the shadows can be done with gradients.

Also try searching lexus.com or whatever for pdf files, which are vector, and see if a logo is vector within the doc (just zoom in on it and see if it's prettyful). one can do this by using the google search engine (google.com) and searching something like site:lexus.com filetype:pdf . if you find one let me know and I'll extract it and everything. also if you see any flash ads or flash anything with the logo (right click and zoom to see if sharp) that will do too.

Thanks for your help. I believe I can find a flash ad that has the logo in it, or something, or maybe work on it in Inkscape. I should also clarify. This is not just a 'new logo' -- when they started in 1989 this was the logo. There were (and still are) several logo versions in use. However, for the upright display, the current format is preferred. And the Lexus logo is supposed to be in silver--it rarely if ever is in black if there are other colors on the same page/article. I have also noticed that the other luxury marques, such as BMW, or Audi, or Cadillac have logos with true color, not the black and white. This idea didn't originate from me, although I am now pursuing it. Several months ago, before even the previous PNG file, other Wikipedia users attempted to load silver colored logos, so I am not the only one who sees this discrepancy. Yes, I realize it is not a huge issue, but it is a matter of accuracy, and any user who browses the luxury marque pages will notice. The original black logos that are floating around on some pages are placeholder ones from years back, the new SVGs and higher-res logos are in color and more detailed. It took quite some doing for this logo to get a silver color that would work with the Wikipedia infobox's light gray color. Anyhow, thanks for your help in this matter. I just noticed you replaced the b/w one with your updated one. The new one is over 100 times bigger (file size) and is not very well done. This is no insult on you, as not even I can accomplish what you want. It looks nice as a thumbnail but when zoomed into as an svg has many artifacts. The purpose of vector graphics is to make things simple, and make line drawings clean. In my opinion wikipedia does not need to have the most up to date logos, as the silver one is exactly the same except for coloring and shading. The toyota svg on this site is 7kb; the honda is 4. The lexus one I uploaded was less than 6. Yours is over 500kb. We're both silly though. You on your lexus connoisseurism and me on my svg. :) -Indolences 03:45, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

I have checked up on other Wikipedia SVG pages and they state that although a larger file size may result from the SVG, it's not a big deal since Wikipedia generates thumbnails and the file size of those is much smaller (24 kb main page, 66 kb logo page). Yes you can say that the size of the main file is much larger, but Wikipedia can handle it because few if any care to visit the logo page, much less download the full logo. The main concern is about how it looks on the main page. And only the inferior, poorly-written articles about the luxury makes still retain the black and white, unfeatured logo.

Say what you want, but it makes sense for Wikipedia, a site generated by users and updated in real-time, to have the more updated pictures and logos. And by the way, dozens of other car makes still use .png. If I had been allowed to use .png, this whole thing would have been over much more quickly, with a minimum of fuss, and practically better quality except for the zooming-in feature. I wouldn't have had to waste my time, go to the trouble of learning all this SVG stuff and image manipulation, just to satisfy the SVG implementation when dozens of other automotive articles still use SVG or less.

seriously, I think Wikipedia needs to look again at mandating SVGs for logos. And by checking, I see that according to Wikipedia:Logos it says "Overly high-resolution versions of logos should be avoided, however, as they are less likely to be fair use. :- Do not use SVG formats, as this can infringe on fair use. However, if vector artwork is available, they can be rasterized to a screen-resolution PNG format.

- Where possible, logos should be uploaded in PNG format. JPEG format should not be used as it is lossy and results in a less professional appearance."

So it seems there is some flexibility in this regard.

I realize there are many artifacts in the SVG and I have not been fully satisfied with the result. If I had more time and more Inkscape skills I would redo it further. Because it's not just the color, the Circle-L logo is supposed to be beveled with 3 sides. That's all I can say about that for now. If you can find a way to fix those artifacts, please be my guest. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
