Veevers Vandalism

For some reason I was looking through the edit history and came upon a deliberate change of Veevers working in the area in 1950s, to the 1980s! Have a look at either side of the "Revision as of 03:00, 1 June 2009" and you will see that an IP editor made that change. Further research this morning has led me to understand that there are few impact craters with meteoritic material still associated with them; but I do wonder how big a dimple has to be before it is called a crater. I was surprised to find that Acraman, in the north of the Eyre Peninsula, has chondrite associated with it. It is huge, and believe it or not, I figured out for myself that it was a crater, simply because of the circular manner in which the roads run around it. When the kids were little and we were heading for Coffin Bay, we had a choice of either the east road or the west road - while studying the map I began speculating that the circular structure we were driving around was a crater.=Greg Winterflood (talk) 00:58, 15 June 2011 (UTC) Summerdrought (talk) 08:24, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

I have it on good authority that Argadargada refers to the end point, or run out of the Sandover. So it appears that Huckitta, Arkete, and Argadargada might all have the same meaning. I have had a quick look at the Wikipedia:Manual of Style and it is a comprehensive section; is there something in particular that you wish me to study?

OK on the "Personal Research" being unacceptable as a reference. I have used Fire Across the Desert, also Files and Site Plans viewed in the Adelaide Office of the National Archives of Australia generally as reference material. If you could be specific I will expand on the references for the particular entries of concern. I worked on the Range for the best part of 30 years and have hands on experience with some of the items that I have entered. My wife worked on the ELDO Project for 1966 to 1970.

Hello Charliebarsby, your experience at Woomera could be invaluable in fixing up the articles about Woomera. The article Woomera, South Australia needs much more in the way of verifiable references, for example there are no references at all in the Introduction and Overview sections, and the first appears in the Establishment subsection of History. It seems that P. Mortons "Fire across the desert" would be a very good reference, but nowhere in the article is its ISBN number quoted so that readers can verify that it is a legitimate source. I suggest you look at Wikipedia:Citing sources as the main reference for the method of doing this. Also, looking how other editors have gone about it always helps. Hello Summerdrought, Thank you for these tips which I will follow up in due course. My opinion on first reading some articles related to Woomera is that they are RAAF biased and lacking in detail on what preceded the RAAF take over. Hence my interest in adding a bit more information to reflect more accurately what has occured in the past.

The ISBN for Fire Across the Desert is ISBN 0 644 06068 9 Commonwealth of Australia 1989. Apart from the files in the Defence and National Archives it is the best written reference available.

Hello again Charliebarsby, I am green with envy that you have signed copies of LB's books! I have paperback versions of his books, except for "Around the World in 80 Delays". If you have a paperback copy of his "Bush" series, there is a small (35x45mm) image of him on the back cover, which is what I used as a guide for the pencil drawing. My focus recently has been writing new articles about his roads, which had not yet been covered. It is still a work in progress. I concur with your comments regarding RAAF bias in the Woomera related articles, something which you might be able to re-balance in due course. I travelled the Anne Beadell Highway in 2007, some of the Connie Sue, the Gary Junction Road, Sandy Blight Junction Road and part of the Gary Hwy since then. Hope to do more in future. Good Morning Summerdrought, Thank you for the tip on the Talk page. I have created a Talk page this morning. OK on the photograph, it is on the back of four of the "Bush" series books. Do you have the book Len Beadell's Legacy by Ian Bayly ISBN 9781921496028? It is a reasonable reference although there are some errors of fact and he is obviously inclined towards the aborigines. He doesn't appreciate the fact that if LB's roads had not been constructed that many of the Communities would not exist as they were developed after the roads were constructed. I know Len's family and for several years before her death I had been in contact with his wife Anne on numerous occasions. She gave me copies of selected portions of his diaries however these were given in confidence and I would not pass them on to third parties. I would be prepared to share information with you if I can be of assistance although my main interest is the period 1946 - 1956.

My aim has been to correct works that have been writtem about him which are not factual. I have recently written an article that was published in the Austalian Sapper Magazine (an annual publication) regarding the so-called "Beadell Rescue". This incident happened in mid 1956 about half way between Mount Davies (north-west corner of SA) and Emu. The original short article was writen by Major Dennis Magee who was in charge of work conducted by the Royal Australian Engineers at Maralinga early in the project.

The only roads that I have travelled are Watson-Maralinga-EMU-Mabel Creek, Watson-Maralinga-Oak Valley-Volk's Hill Corner-Emu-Mabel Creek and also Dingo Claypan-300 mile peg and down to the Anne Beadell Highway. Plenty of bush bashing north of Emu looking for suitable areas for projects. Observatory Hill and Aboriginal Stone Henge were highlights during my travels

For reasons known only to themselves LB is not appreciated in the Royal Australian Survey Corps "clique". It is the best example of Tall Poppy Syndrome that I he ever encountered.

I see that you mention that you are located in Cairns. How long have you lived in the area? I was born and educated at Gordonvale and left there to join the Army at age 17. Flying by with a fly-by

I don't think I'd characterize "flyby" as "American" usage so much as a manifestation of Americans not knowing how to hyphenate compound adjectives and verbs any more because... oh, I won't get started on that issue! I think "flyby" is not dead-on incorrect, but definitely suboptimal, and would go with the OED "fly-by" myself under the circumstances. I have a distinct recollection of coming upon this issue in the past (although, apparently, according to the article history, not on Jupiter) and it isn't out of the question that I may have rolled my eyes and "compromised" with "flyby" in the name of intra-article consistency and at least eliminating glaring horrors like "the spacecraft made its final fly by of Mercury on 30 April 2015". (I tend to do a good bit of copy-nitpicking with the mobile app at 2 a.m. [insomnia relief; eh, it beats Candy Crush] and while I try to avoid getting mired in long articles under circumstances when keeping written style notes isn't practical, alas, it happens, and I try to finish the surgery as inoffensively as I can lest I zonk out asleep with an editing window open.) Peninsula Developmental Road

I think you might be being a bit too vigilant here given this is a new user and WP:NOBITE applies. I think reaching out and talking to them about how to improve what they are doing might help a bit. They seem to be acting in good faith and I suspect they are a TMR employee who knows all about the road, but struggling with policies, processes, licensing etc. As someone who does Wikipedia training, I know new users find it all very bewildering. And, importantly, new users are unlikely to read an article Talk page nor look at the edit summaries in the History (they just don't yet know about them). So you probably need to write on their User Talk as that is your best chance of reaching them because they get the "You have new messages banner". At the moment they probably have no idea why their contributions are being deleted and probably getting rather angry and frustrated by it all. Kerry (talk) 00:39, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Photo request

Hi, Summerdrought! As you mention you live in Cairns, I was wondering if you might be able to help me with a photo for Commons. I have just written the article Edward Albert Koch (a doctor in Cairns who died in 1901 having figured out the connection between mosquitos and malaria) and there appears to be no photo I can find of him. However, there was a memorial built to him, now located in Anzac Memorial Park (corner of Abott and Spence Street) (see map) which has "on two sides of the dome are sculptured likenesses in Carrara marble of Dr Koch" and when you look closely at this photo of the memorial you can see there is a carving of a man's face. So I was wondering if a close-up photo of this carving might be good enough to be used to illustrate his article. I am guessing the carving on the monument is probably the source of the image on the Dr Koch foundation website. Anyway, if you are in a position to help with this, many thanks in advance. As a result I have modified the entry for Thomson DR in the RJL of Landsborough Highway (with an Ozroads reference) I have also added State Route 14 (as per Google maps) to the List of road routes in Queensland. I love your maps, and have not noticed any errors to date. While on this subject, I recently left the following message on Talk:Irrigation Way: "One of the wonderful maps that show the subject road in a distinctive colour would be great for this article." Moonie Highway

Hi Graham,

• 1. I can see the updated map on my PC (in Win Explorer) but I can only get the old one on my iPad (in Safari). Any ideas why this is?
• 2. I have had the following feedback on your map from user Scott Davis:

Hi John, (1) You will need to clear the Safari cache on your iPad, as the old version is being displayed. This occurs because there has been no file name change with the updated image. Hi Graham. Thank you for that. When you revisit that map, could you please also check the Surat Development Road? The line on your map east of Surat doesn't seem to go to the same place as the line on the external maps linked from de:Surat Developmental Road. I am not familiar enough with that part of Australia to have any idea which (if either) is "right". I intend to learn to make maps for myself sometime if I find a pile of "free time". Northern Territory roads

I have put a junction and locality table on Plenty Highway tonight too. My sources were Google Maps and the article itself (including the map). When you are next thinking about the Gunbarrel Highway, could you please check the link in Yulara, Northern Territory and either cite or correct it? Hi Scott, I have added Camooweal as the main destination of the Sandover Hwy, otherwise the junction list looks good. I presume you are using google maps for the distances, which seem to come up a bit shorter than Hema maps, but are probably close enough. I have deleted the Gunbarrel Highway from the Yulara article, as it was incorrect. I have noted though that the Great Central Road is also named Tjukaruru Road on my 2007 edition Hema maps. I must admit though, that when I last travelled that road in 2015 (from Giles to Ayers Rock), I did not take much notice of the road signage. At that stage the Great Central Road had not seen a grader on the Northern Territory side for four years, and was in the worst condition of any major road I have ever been on! Cheers. Thank you. Yes, Google Maps was me reference for distances. I think the link on the Plenty Highway reference even includes the waypoints. My impression is that the NT calls the road from Yulara to Docker River "Tjukaruru Road" and Western Australia calls the road from there to Laverton the "Great Central Road". I often find just thinking about what I read helps me to improve the things I know something about, and that triggers others to add what the have found too. The latest thing I noticed is should the (Old?) Gunbarrel Highway also appear near the top of the map of the Anne Beadell Highway. --Scott Davis ^Talk 07:54, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Graham. I've started assessing our dragonfly pages to see whether they really are stubs or are something more. So, I figure if there is much more than the basic what-where-how, then the stub template can go. • Castlemate Unfortunately no, I don’t have any written references. I wrote to him once because I intended visiting Veevers crater, and there were errors in the text of the crater article, particularly with the actual years quoted. Some days later I was surprised when the phone rang and it was John Veevers on the other end. We spoke for about half an hour and it was delightful to have a conversation with him and sort out the errors. I promised that I would give him a call using a satellite phone from the crater bearing his name, which I subsequently did. I also sent him some photographs taken at the crater after returning home. We corresponded a few times by email, but usually about other suspected impact craters, and he was always kind enough to provide an opinion. Summerdrought (talk) 07:13, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

I've added a taxobar linking this article to other online databases of species, and then made it go live by linking to this species' entry on Wikidata, also ensuring that this article connects to ones on the species in other languages, and to the Wikimedia Commons category. For some reason the link to your first citation, the Levi paper, was dead, so I found a copy on the Internet Archive and linked to that. I also specified which page this species is on. For the categories, you'd actually set the species to index under "keyserlingi"-I'm not sure if this was intentional or not? I've changed it to "radon" but obviously no worries if that's something I don't understand. Finally, the Levi citation doesn't actually specify much about location so I've added another instance of the ALA citation to provide a source for what territories it's found in. Hope that's all OK!
