Top 25 - EXO Clarification edit

Hello,

I was just wondering if you could elaborate on the problem with EXO's page? Is it artificial views? I saw you mentioned malicious efforts and wanted to know exactly before writing my blog entry for another site.

Thank you!

MultiFanStan (talk) 21:06, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@MultiFanStan: - EXO fans have long attempted to artifically inflate page views for various social media charts. Igordebraga unearthed a series of tweets co-ordinating efforts to elevate Wikipedia page views which have since been deleted, and as far as I am concerned they are blacklisted. By the WP:5000, they would sit comfortably in the Top 3. These views are clearly distorted, as there is nothing to support such high views, and also see EXO excluded on the grounds of the percentage of mobile views. Hope this clarifies things, Stormy clouds (talk) 21:23, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's a hint that on the Wikipedia:5000, the mobile percentage is quite low, because apparently the campaigns to boost EXO views advocate for desktop views. igordebraga 15:55, 21 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please participate to the talk pages consultation edit

Hello

Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.

We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.

We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

You're a 'Featured Host' edit

You may have seen this announcement that all the 'Featured Hosts' - whose names and pictures randomly cycle round in the Teahouse Header - have just been updated.

As you are currently one of the 29 most active editors at WP:TH, your name and an image has now replaced that of an inactive host. Because you've already added yourself to the full list of active hosts, I have simply used the same image (even though it looks like something a bit unmentionable!). StudiesWorld (talk) 22:05, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • @StudiesWorld: - I have seen the edit which I made to 2019 South American blackout, which you are claiming to be a copyright violation (diff), and I have seen your reversion subsequently reverted by Martinevans123 (diff). In no way do I feel that my edit constituted a copyright violation of the material posted to the Associated Press, as the relevant material in the citation I added "patients dependent on home medical equipment were urged to go to hospitals with generators" was altered to ""Patients who were dependent upon home medical equipment were urged to travel to nearby hospitals, where similar devices were still functional courtesy of backup generators.". Any similarities (and I acknowledge some are present) are a consequence of the fact that there are a limited number of ways to express the relevant facts in an appropriate fashion. However, in my view, this is appropriate material added with the necessary citation, not a copyright violation, and I consequently would request, in light of this, that you rescind the user warning you have placed on my talk page, as I do not feel it is justified, and that you could direct any further discussion of this issue to the relevant article talk page. Thanks, Stormy clouds (talk) 22:30, 16 June 2019 (UTC).Reply
I have struck my user warning. At first it seemed to me to be somewhere between copyvio and close paraphrasing. However, thinking more about it, I have come to agree with you regarding the limitations of phrasing. I apologize for leaving this warning. StudiesWorld (talk) 23:41, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
@StudiesWorld: - thanks for striking. I understand where you were coming from, so it is no problem. Kudos on the work on the article and the nomination at ITN/C. Stormy clouds (talk) 23:44, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, discussion pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at WP:TH, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Masum Reza📞 20:56, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • @Masumrezarock100: - hi. I understand your user warning here was in good faith, but I am going to ask that you please strike it as it is not justified. I note that you are referring to this diff, whereby I, as the edit summary suggests, am tidying up various comments as a consequence of a messy edit conflict. I can understand that you may have thought that I was removing comments based purely on the character count, a mistake I myself have been guilty of, but if you look at the changes made in the diff, and that revision of the page, you will find that all content removed had been erroneously duplicated by the aforementioned edit conflict, so I was merely tidying up comments which had been placed there twice to render the page parsable and easy to read. Consequently, I was not actually removing other people's comments, but rather cleaning up my own mess in the preceding edit. As a featured host of the Teahouse, I can assure you that I would never deliberately remove the comments of others, and I hope that you see this now and strike your above warning. I would also recommend, given the current state of the section in question with several comments present twice, I would also ask that you consider undoing the effects of your reversion (I would do so myself, but I am reluctant to revert a reversion of one of my diffs). Thanks, Stormy clouds (talk) 21:57, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
I apologize for not checking edit history and also for giving you the warning. I have struck out the above comment. Masum Reza📞 22:10, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Masumrezarock100 - no problem whatsoever. Like I said, I understand where you were coming from, and have done similar myself in the past. Thanks very much for understanding, and for striking the comment. Stormy clouds (talk) 22:39, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Top 25 Report edit

While I eagerly wait your next report: politics repel me (I have equal contempt for left wingers who complain about everything and right wingers who push for outdated and\or nasty ideas), specially after meeting some really engaged people in college. Yet now I've been labeled as having a political agenda. Welp, that's something I never expected. igordebraga 03:49, 2 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Igordebraga: - welcome to the wacky world of the internet in 2019, where, irrespective of actual political leanings, everyone is simultaneously a communist and a Nazi. Makes sense, I guess. OK, I'm being hyperbolic, but for what it is worth, I don't believe for a second that you have been pedalling a political agenda, but I guess such criticisms are another peril of the job. Feedback on annual top 50 report edit

I was proofing the annual top 50 report, and couldn't figure out what the word "errand" was doing there. Maybe you meant "errant?" Not being sure enough to change it, I left it as-is. - Bri.public (talk) 19:01, 7 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bri.public - no, you were correct in that being a typographical error on my behalf, which I have since amended. Stormy clouds (talk) 00:08, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
In case you ever come back, that 2019 report made Reddit have a field day with you once (with a stray mention to my Cameron Boyce write-up... and missing that I didn't write the AOC one). igordebraga 06:04, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
igordebraga - they may have been onto something regarding the verbosity (though it wasn't aided by a thesaurus and was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, and even the naysayers seem to agree with the actual points being made). It also appears that I came off significantly more vitriolic and mean-spirited towards Billie Eilish (who I think is perfectly fine, and much better than Ed Sheeran - whose 2018 entry this entry was mimicking) than I intended. There's something mildly entertaining in how much a lot of it feels like the pot calling the kettle black (and your Cameron Boyce write-up was entirely correct, no idea why you were catching strays, especially since your remarks are justified by the fact I have completely forgotten Cameron Boyce). Hope you're keeping well, thanks for sharing this. Stormy clouds (talk) 08:59, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Given the other day I saw you thanking me for reverting, as Serendipodous put it, "someone [who] felt the need to alter a page that had been archived for years and not viewed by the general population simply to save the blushes of a dead man", hope you're dealing well with life given it even pushed you away from Wikipedia, and in case you still check on the Top 25 Report, that all the people who emerged to help me are pleasing you. And having just checked Ireland at the 2020 Summer Olympics, that you have been enjoying Tokyo (as my experience has alternated between happiness and frustration - helped by questionable refereeing - all under heavy insomnia) igordebraga 05:53, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • igordebraga, thanks for passing by. Apologies for leaving you high and dry with respect to the Report, I promise it was not a conscious decision on my part, but rather than I had less time to compile them (especially once university transitioned to virtual learning). The newer authors have stepped up to the plate admirably though, and it remains a really interesting and engaging read. As for Brazil's plight in Tokyo, I (similarly struggling with time zones albeit to a lesser extent) caught and was really impressed by the surfing, and I think the men's football squad is amongst the strongest at the tournament, and was on track to gain some revenge for 2014 before they took their foot off the gas against the Germans. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
