Acro edit

Hi Spino, I checked with the original source and the sizes on the Acrocanthosaurus page did need to be increased. I've made the changes now. Dinoguy2 (talk) 14:57, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

T. rex edit

Regarding T. rex (no such thing as a "T-Rex", anymore than a disease called E-Coli!), the hip height in the paper is probably measuring the total length of the leg bones. Obviously, in a life pose with knees naturally bent, it would be a bit shorter. Actually, in resting posture I wouldn't be surprised if it were more like 3m at the hip, losing a meter from bending in the hip, knee and ankle joints. I'll look into the newer bite force study for addition to the article. Dinoguy2 (talk) 22:10, 30 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah, thanks for the link. But why use a news article when you can use the original study? :) Apparently it's available free online: [1] Dinoguy2 (talk) 15:39, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

(To Spinodontosaurus) I that under the pic on your profile (regarding theropod sizes)you put Spinosaurus as being 18 meters long. I wouldn't have a question about that, but when I figured that a meter is 3.3ft, I found that you're saying that spinosaurus is 62.7ft long. You also put Deinocheirius at 15m (49.5ft), Carcharodotosaurus at 14m (46.2ft), and Deltadromeus also at 14m, and both Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus at a mere 13m (42.9). ???????????? Care to explain?Dinotitan (talk) 16:14, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

personal attacks edit

Hello, I posted a warning on the talk page of User talk:Giganotosaurus Fan12345, but your |recent post there is a borderline personal attack. Keep things cool and this will blow over. de Bivort 20:54, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for the note. It's my guess that you're right about his intentions. I just think it's good to reserve judgment until he actually damages a WP page. That said, we're all keeping our eyes out and I doubt he'll get far if he vandalizes anything. de Bivort 22:19, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Scale image edit

I wouldn't mess with any weirdly displaying pictures, the Wiki thumbnail generator has been on the fritz the last few days, and users were advised to wait for the tech staff to sort it out. I just checked the file and it looks fine to me so I re-reverted it. Also, make sure you try clicking the 'purge' button on Commons if it looks like a new file version isn't sticking (usually due to your personal cache or something, not clear on what that does but it works for me!). MMartyniuk (talk) 23:11, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bary and sucho are almost always underestimated in size. If you look at individual lengths of bone rather than the vague "length estimates" people usually throw around, they're enormous animals themselves. I based the ones in my scale chart directly on these rigorous skeletal drawings: [2], so you can see for yourself :) As you can see and as reported here [3], the skull of Baryonyx is about 1m long and that of Suchomimus would be even bigger, though it's less complete. I didn't actually know about that 75cm humerus, but the current arm length would be consistent with that if not bigger. The main reason I (and others) tend to give it shorter arms is simply based on the trend seen in other groups of large theropods. The dorsal crest of Irritator (I think "crest" is a far better term than hump or sail and matches what we call the same structure in modern reptiles...) is simply a guess based on a scaled down Spino. Spino's crest is shorter in front than in back, which artists often get wrong and may make Irritator look unintuitive in silhouette. MMartyniuk (talk) 23:31, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, I based the proportions on the scale bar in Scott Hartman's skeletal, which may be a little too small. Here's a comparison: [4] The top one is roughly in the posture of my scale chart and tops off at 3.5 m at the top of the illium, and in mine I added a lot of extra meat on the bone--that is the top of the back is fat, muscle, etc., not the illial ridge. Despite the extra mass mine still tops out at about 3.5 m so I think that's a reasonable maximum hip height even if the leg bones are too large. As for the new limb material, I had heard rumors and seen that statue before, pretty cool if true but should be taken with a grain of salt until something is published on this specimen. The PD neural spine is indeed from something undescribed. MMartyniuk (talk) 22:12, 29 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the notes. some of this is based on the fact that Hartman has drastically updated his skeletals since I made the silhouettes. I'll take a revised look at these this weekend. As for bulkiness, it was inspired by this paper. http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0026037 Note that Hartman tends to put soft tissues on the skeletals at or below minimum girth as found by the study, making a few look slightly shrink-wrapped to me. MMartyniuk (talk) 22:57, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok, finally had a chance to look at this. I re-scaled Hartman's most recent (i.e. today!) skeletal of the Spino holotype to the rostrum size of the dal Sasso specimen, and the result fit into the current silhouette like a glove. If anything, based on the fact that Hartman has reduced the length of the skull in proportion to the body, this may indicate that the dal Sasso specimen's body would be even larger than depicted in my current scale chart. I also scaled in the image of the known portions of the Carch skull, and didn't see any change necessary. I had added soft tissue over the dorsal rugosities which were almost certainly present in life, which may be why you thought the shape didn't match. Lining up Carch, Gig, and Rex side by side, all three are identical in length, so I'll leave Carch in second place simply because it's alphabetical. I have though updated the skull on Gig to follow Hartman's new restoration. MMartyniuk (talk) 14:55, 22 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
