Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

I have a request for you to rollback Revision as of 23:14, 16 September 2021 Hydralisk 12345 (talk) 19:13, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

There have been a lot of changes since then, many of which appear helpful. What is your rationale for the proposal? Thanks, SpencerT•C 03:30, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Subway article

Hi Spencer, this is Paige from Subway. I wanted to see if you were you available to review this request on the Subway talk page? I am currently working on drafting an Operations section that would incorporate information on Subway's business model, corporate structure, and restaurant locations. I envision an Operations section that includes Business model, Corporate structure, and Restaurants and digital subsections.

More details can be found on the talk page and I will be available there to answer any questions. Thanks PHSubway (talk) 14:40, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

I will not be able to give this request the time it deserves in a timely fashion. I added {{edit COI}} to the top of your request so it can put out a broader request for review, and I recommend you use this to get the most timely response for edit requests. SpencerT•C 02:57, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Jim Goetz proposal

Hi Spencer, hope you've been well. I very much appreciated your fair-minded approach to my Robert Rubin edit requests in the past. Currently I am working with Sequoia partner Jim Goetz and have proposed a short new section about his philanthropic giving. However after several weeks I have been unsuccessful finding someone via relevant WikiProjects to review it. If you might have a spare moment to review this request, I'd really appreciate it. WWB Too (Talk · COI) 20:10, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Not sure when I'll have a chance to give it a review so I've added {{edit COI}} to the top of the section so that someone can give it a look; please use that to give it a larger call for requested edits with a conflict of interest. Best, SpencerT•C 20:33, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest? Why are you deleting looted art related info on Cleveland Museum of Art?

You seem to have deleted (reverted) looted art related well-referenced text from Cleveland Museum of Art.

You did the same for the article regarding the museum director William Griswold with a comment "discussed in body". The well-referenced information (now deleted by you) is NOT discussed in the body in the way the main section claims "In the two instances that museum staff discovered the questionable provenance of one of its objects, he has personally led negotiations resulting in their return to their respective countries of origin." which paints a very positive picture of William Griswold. Whereas, the text (with credible references) deleted by you points to a different picture. That is; Cleveland Museum of Art has acquired the looted statue when no other museum wanted to touch it because of its dubious origins and even after it was recently confiscated by the law enforcement, the museum under the direction of William Griswold tries to cling on the looted material, yet alone "personally leading negotiations resulting to return to the country of origin".

Please could you explain why nave you deleted well-referenced counter-argument text?

Regs. Lightingci (talk) 02:48, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

I have no relationship with the Cleveland Museum of Art or to William Griswold. Please note my edit at Cleveland Museum of Art here that sought to include additional information regarding this topic in the body that was included in the reference, and I added information from the edit with neutral fashion. As for the William Griswold (museum director) article, the article must adhere closely to the Biographies of living persons policy. Neither reference mentions Griswold, and thus would be most appropriate for the CMA article rather than Griswold's, unless reliable sources mention a clear connection. I was mistaken in my edit summary and meant the main CMA article rather than the body of Griswold's article. I agree that the information can also be added to Griswold's article if a reliable sources makes a clear connection between his role in this, and you are welcome to go ahead and make such edits. RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:
