EP Brakes edit

I have added an article you suggested on the subject of EP brakes on SR railway vehicles.

For what it is worth I think the primary article is rather untidy, and I am wondering whether to launch into a clean-up.

Hi, Soarhead77! Unfortunately, using non-free images of living people is unacceptable except in special circumstances (see the non-free content policy for details). Far North Line edit

In the Springs of both 2003 and 2004 I travelled from Inverness to Thurso (on the midday train). Both years I travelled on trains which were formed of four carriages. All the carriages were carrying passengers. --Stewart (talk) 18:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Stewart,
I regularly travel on this line, commuting between Inverness and Invergordon. I use the 07.22 southwards in the morning and the 17.52 back in the evening. This latter train is always formed of two class 158 units, but one is *always* locked off to the public no matter how full the other one gets (and it gets pretty full this time of year with tourists etc) and is used to move empty stock from Inverness to Wick - the only thing they do is let the public do is take bicycles in the second unit. Tonights train was particularly busy so it was in this spirit I did the change! I was under the impression they might open this to the public at some time but they don't.
They do this since there are (I think) three trains to Wick from Inverness and four from Wick to Inverness.
In 2003-4 were these units 156s?

In carry not recall which year it was (I gues it was 2003), but on one occaision it was a combination of a 156 and 158 units. The other time was two 158 units (a big change from my previous trip in 1983 - 7 Mk1 carriages and 2xClass 37 locomotives with a train split at Georgemas). Southbound trips on both cases were a 2-car 158.
The situation you describe happens on the Cambrian Coast line from Shrewsbury where the additional unit is coupled. At Machllyneth the train is split with the rear portion then being made available to passengers. Not a nice experience when it is raining. --Stewart (talk) 19:29, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

It does sound like it was before the 158s took over completely! They make announcements like "This train is for Wick ..... Georgemas Junction, Thurso, Georgemas Junction and Wick, which tells you which way they go! The Friends of the Far North Line want the 158s replaced by 170s, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon. The local papers are full of the idea that Scotrail will spend £1.3m on fitting the 158s with retention tanks. I'd like them to refit the ones with next to no legroom so they're as comfy as the other ones. (I think there are 5 or 6 like that) Then I think well, it could be worse, we could have 142s. Having said that I've never seen anything other than a two car train on this line in the last couple of years while I've been using it - so perhaps you should undo the change I made that you undid, or make a note about what used to happen.
We don't see 37s on this line any more, just the ubiquitous 66s with the odd freight, (the last one I saw was at 06.40 this morning!) and every Tuesday in spring/summer/autumn the Royal Scotsman with usually a Class 47 from West Coast Railways in charge, going back on Thursdays. This waits at all the passing loops for the service trains to go past.
The other excitement in this area is the Caledonian Sleeper which comes into Inverness about 8.30 am usually with either 67011 or 67007 in charge - I sometimes see that, if its not late and the FNL isn't - the 07.22 was only 15 minutes late into Inverness this morning. Presumably whichever 67 is not in Inverness goes to Fort William!

I have not used the line since First ScotRail took over the franchise. I think the edit is correct for the section which refers to the the period when National Express ScotRail ran the franchise. My feeling is your information about formations and rolling stock usage would be most appropriate for the section that refers to the First ScotRail era. We are both right for the appropriate time periods we are familiar with.
It was also in the period when the train went Inverness - Georgemas - Thurso - Wick - Inverness (or vice versa) that I travelled on the line. I have always managed to get to/from Thurso without going via Wick. I do think that the provision of a service between Thurso and Wick is an improvement. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
