RFA Thanks edit

Thanks for your strong support at my recent Request for adminship. I’ve come to associate your username with common sense and good advice, so your kind words are especially appreciated. I hope you find I live up to your expectations. Best, Risker (talk) 13:41, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations and good luck, Risker! And thanks for the friendly comment. ---Sluzzelin talk 06:37, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your sensitivity to language... edit

...as in your pertinent remarks on my Language ref desk query, is greatly valued. Keep up the good work, and may I say: I look forward to further collaborations in the future when I gear up to working more intensively and systematically (rather than my recent sporadic, limited manner) on mainspace pages. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 16:19, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated, your questions are always interesting, answering them makes the desk feel useful, and I look forward too! ---Sluzzelin talk 06:37, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposal edit

Since you were heavily involved in the discussion at Wikipedia:Responding to suicidal individuals some time ago I thought you might be interested in discussing the merits of a similar but slightly different proposal here. I would be very interested in your opinion. Cheers, --S.dedalus (talk) 00:41, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for notifying me, S.dedalus. To refresh my memory, I had to go back quite a bit in time and found my "heavy involvement" consisting of three posts in this thread, basically saying "Yeah, I've seen it happen at the reference desk, but I have no clue what to do", "no, there really are unbelievably insensitive editors, but I have no clue what to do", and "I don't think there is a lot we can do". ;)
I've occasionally grazed through recurring threads on this topic. You might be interested in the relatively recent discussions at Wikipedia talk:Threats of violence. Forcing it into official policy won't be the way to go, nor will nudging people into a formulistic procedure. I see you as an open-minded thinker, and wish you good luck. If you manage to establish a quiet corner where things can get reported and handled with discretion and without long discussions and without drama, then I will support by reporting anything of concern I might come across. I'd rather not get involved in discussions though, I have zero professional expertise in this field, and it is too emotionally burdened. Best wishes. ---Sluzzelin talk 12:10, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Westermarkt, Amsterdam edit

Thanks for your interest and thoroughness on my recent query. I realized in advance that there was some crossover between describing the statue's location relative to Westermarkt vs. Westerkerk, but I'm obliged to adhere to the source text. So I still remain somewhat unsure how to word this caption... but as further pursuit falls along the lines of "independent research" and accordingly discouraged, your input is surely appreciated! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 11:54, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Heh, I checked some travel guides:
"Nearby, on the south side of the church by Prinsengracht" (Rough Guide, 2003)
"Mari Andriessen's statue of Frank (dated 1977) stands nearby, at the corner of Westermarkt and Prinsengracht." (Time Out, 2005)
"A statue of Anne Frank by Mari Andriessen stands on the south side of the nearby Westerkerk" (This Way Guides, 2000).
I sometimes don't know where WP:V ends and WP:SYNTH begins. For some reason I was reminded of this change which made me chuckle (and hit revert). ---Sluzzelin talk 13:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for you edit

and my thanks for your support and advice on the 71.+ -- it's getting aggressive and that's the giveaway clue to this one. It's good to know you're there as ever Sluzzelin, : ) 08:22, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

European Eye and Hair Colour edit

Thank you for your vast upgrade of my rather snippy answer on the RD Humanities today. The more we learn about DNA and how very little difference there is between the human groups (races, tribes, nations, what have you), the less patience I have of anything that smacks of attempts to differentiate us, or even merely emphasize the differences, on what I perceive as silliness. I did rather pre-judge the questioner, though, and you were both kinder and more helpful. I will blame it on the heat (33 degrees C). ៛ Bielle (talk) 19:46, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I wouldn't worry, Bielle, and of course I share your sentiments. Race and skin color seem to be among the refdesk's fixations. Erm that is not only the refdesk's, I've been following the tedious debates on race and intelligence and other places for almost two years. Did you see the recent excitement and drama regarding "white pride" (if not, don't go looking for it, it's depressing). I'm always falling through all categories and there's no space for me on these charts. My grandparents were born in four different countries on three different continents, so where's my userbox? ---Sluzzelin talk 20:06, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Deleted user page edit

I've restored the user page. Do me a favor, eh? Put a note on there explaining the situation a bit so that other admins know to leave the page alone. : - ) And if you would like the full protection re-applied to that user page, just let me know. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:13, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rangeblock. edit

Let's hope it worked... · AndonicO Engage. 09:45, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I responded at WT:RD. I remember great reluctance to range-block another, far less malicious, but also annoying refdesk hooligan using a dynamic IP a while back. Please be careful you don't get yourself in trouble. And thanks for responding. ---Sluzzelin talk 09:48, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Replied back; and thank you for your concern. · AndonicO Engage. 10:18, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're a legend, Sluzzelin edit

I'm gonna have to work out how to do barnstars now. The translation was so quick, and reads so well! I'm very impressed and grateful.

Still, I'm disappointed - had the mistaken impression the Compagnie della Calza was an eerie behind-the-scenes organ of the state - do you know if I am right in thinking they were also referred to as the Eterni? Am I thinking of a different group? - there was something in venetian government called (I think) The Ten - I'll look into that. Adambrowne666 (talk) 12:44, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

... thanks, too, for your note on Sedlec -- I love ossuaries, and though I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it, I must admit I am perversely gratified to hear the Capuchin Crypt is a grotesque experience - there's something about the nexus between putrefaction and ancient Christianity that I find compelling - I'm reminded of an excellent essay on colour I once read, where a certain shade of purple is described as being peculiar to certain skin diseases and Catholic kitsch.

We visited the catacombs in Paris - huge ossuaries - interesting how all the tourists, ourselves included, became quite hilarious after a while, as one does when a taboo is broken - in this case, of course, it was death... Adambrowne666 (talk) 12:52, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I thought I'd saved your email address, but Outlook Express says I haven't - can you send it to me again? Adambrowne666 (talk) 09:56, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the intoxicatingly blue plate - very beautiful. Adambrowne666 (talk) 01:33, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's The Story Behind This? edit

So, what happend:

Congratulations! Sluzzelîn hereby pins you with the NightFalcon’s award for having a “Z” in your name while at the same time managing to do lots of great work here on Wikipedia! Feel free to give it to anyone else who is doing lots of good work while still having a “Z” in their name! Sluzzelin

?68.148.164.166 (talk) 09:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's not much of a story, but here it is: I gave this particular award to an editor who has a Z in his name while still managing to do lots of great work here. What inspired me to do this was receiving the original award by a user who evidently thought kindly about my user name and contributions. ---Sluzzelin talk 10:05, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, haha, that's funny. I guess I somehow couldn't find it the first time I looked at your userpage.68.148.164.166 (talk) 08:23, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

your translation of "arquitectura animica" was spot on and releived a week long investigation. Much appreciated. --Shaggorama (talk) 17:03, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Points of view edit

Ah, it's a forest of brambles this points of view thing when it can be argued forwards and backwards and maybe all from someone with a plan from 'way back. My head's spinning too now. Luv you Sluzz, Julia Rossi (talk) 00:56, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's sharp of you (again!) because sometimes they're so tall, you don't know they're there... until they move (or refuse to).  ; ) Julia Rossi (talk) 09:45, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Irregular regulars edit

Yeah, our minds must have crossed paths about this. His most recent was pulled by TOAT yesterday and that kind of made up my mind to not encourage him (he's already posted on the talk as 79.75...). Meanwhile, I'm not sure what to make of Zain's latest edits, any thoughts? -hydnjo talk 01:50, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oops! I knew I was being too bold. I assumed that the "Actually"s are used when the sig is not the same as the username - I see *I* had one too. I'll go revert myself. Sorry, Zain Ebrahim (talk) 09:34, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's not quite clear, I admit ... but yeah I agree with your reverts, Minor typographical aberrations probably don't warrant an "Actually" and I think they're meant for when the sig doesn't contain the "actual" user name. I added three more according to my actual interpretation. But hydnjo are our bosses here! ---Sluzzelin talk 11:19, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ahh . . . I see. That makes sense. Zain Ebrahim (talk) 11:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sluzzelin, regarding the "Actually"s, you described it perfectly. That page may be in my namespace (for now :-) and I'm grateful for your many contributions but I disclaim that bossiness stuff. And Zain, (I think you're watching), I didn't want to be the sole arbiter which is why I asked here.-hydnjo talk 14:13, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Clumsy Zain edit

Hi. Just saw your edit summaries at the RD Talk. Sorry for all the edcons - I was going wild there. Definitely will use preview from now on. Anyway, looks like the jury's out - I'll leave it open for a while and go close it later. Cheers, Zain Ebrahim (talk) 09:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Heh, I can't count how often I've thought: "ok no more hitting save before I've thoroughly previewed everything", only to frantically tweak and mistweak eighteen times the next time I post something. Same with articles: I try writing entire referenced expansions offline, post them, and then find myself making many many edits until I'm satisfied. Zain not clumsy! Zain human. ---Sluzzelin talk 11:19, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, :) Zain Ebrahim (talk) 11:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
(see) Yes, jury's out. I beg you to give us a chance to repopulate the Ent desk, and we can review in a month or two. Deal? ---Sluzzelin talk 11:22, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yep - sounds good. Btw your Ent-Troll comment on Julia's talk page was brilliant. Zain Ebrahim (talk) 11:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

:-P 2u2! edit

Srsly, dear Sluzzelin, I appreciate your input. I'm optimistic that my suggestion will generate interest, consensus, focused mutual effort, and of course significant and long-lasting results to the great satisfaction of all concerned and glory of the ongoing Information-access Revolution. We shall see? Meanwhile, wishing you a happy weekend (though mine's already waning and with much freelance work yet to accomplish...) -- Deborahjay (talk) 09:25, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Boom edit

He he he. Actually, what I meant was that I dislike giving barnstars. Receiving them ... well, that's a different matter entirely.  :) You're very welcome, my friend, and thanks for the compliment. -- JackofOz (talk) 22:33, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't soliciting one, really I wasn't, but that's just beautiful. Thank you, Sluzzelin. -- JackofOz (talk) 07:31, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
