Lois DeBerry edit

Hi. I've nominated Lois DeBerry, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created on September 13, where you can improve it if you see fit. Thanks, MeegsC | Talk 17:11, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Daniel edit

My goal was to make a list of all senators who were behind the Fairtax, and then add the information to their respective pages, along with the cite. I was still learning how to do that, beginning with Cornyb, and had to hit the sack. My time is more limited than I like. Brian Pearson 23:11, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vice Chief of Staff article edit

Thanks for expanding the article and adding the reference. To the best of my knowledge, your link contains the most complete list of incumbents available online. I had to cobble together the rest of the table from the individual biographies linked in each table entry. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Morinao 07:07, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Don McLeary.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Don McLeary.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:34, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ceres (and other astronomy articles) edit

Why did you remove a web reference and replace it with an incorrect reference (here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ceres_%28dwarf_planet%29&diff=next&oldid=163092473)? It looks like subtle vandalism, but I'm assuming it is not. Jim77742 06:24, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could you also please explain your edits at Neptune, Asteroid, and Small Solar System Body? There was no reason to delete the text, especially without some sort of explanation or discussion first. --Ckatzchatspy 07:09, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, Ckatz, but I thought possibly inaccurate information without citations, with only [citation needed] added to compensate, was worse than not having that information at all. As for my edit to Ceres, my intention was to remove a dead link and also remove what I thought was a dead link, because I kept getting a 403 Error at that one. Request edit

Hi there. When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's header in the Edit summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you. Image source problem with Image:Abu Nuwas crater.png edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Abu Nuwas crater.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:26, 21 October 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Lunar crater articles edit

Hi, some other Wikipedians and I were examining the lunar crater articles you've created, and we found the lunar crater reference template to be in very poor taste. It has therefore been removed from several crater articles you've created, because much of the information could not be verified so that in-line citations could be inserted into the article. Specifically, the "satellite craters" section has had to be removed every time. I've checked nine of the ten sources in the template, except for The Moon Observer's Handbook by Fred W. Price. Is the information in that book, and if not, where did you get the information? Thanks. Daniel Bush 03:36, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Well I'm mildly sorry you feel that way, but I am not at all pleased that the Satellite crater information is being removed. To me that seems malicious and destructive, and I will see that it is restored. I originally inserted the template because I want to maintain the information in one location, and people were not satisfied with the information being on the List of craters on the Moon. I.e. I kept seeing "needs references" templates being added to the lunar crater pages, even when the main list was being mentioned as the reference source. After inserting that template I no longer see such requests, so to me it has more than satisfied the requirement.
Note that I just added in a reference to the template for the Satellite crater information, that was already on the List of craters on the Moon page. However, if you had actually checked the other references you would have found the Satellite craters listed in "The Clementine Atlas of the Moon".
You are always free to insert additional inline citations for specific facts on the individual crater pages; I have done so in several instances and the template content can also be considered as general references and they can always be cited Harvard style.
Perhaps there is some way we can reach a compromise here? — RJH (talk) 14:56, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
By now I've gotten almost all the references you used, either physically or through the services of Google Books. I'm changing all of your lunar crater articles to use in-line citation format. I've restored all the information I've removed, but provided in-line citations for each fact, so the reader won't be confused on where the information came from. I'm sorry to have caused you any trouble. Thanks.Daniel Bush 16:45, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're going to change all 2,400 lunar crater pages by inserting inline citations for all of the information? That's going to be an absolute nightmare to maintain. But I guess if you're going to do all that, then it's your nickel. I will, however, have to insist that the list of general references be maintained on the List of craters on the Moon page. Even if we just call it "Further reading".
A combination of inline citations and the general references works fine for the Aristarchus_(crater) page. I would rather we used that, with suitable additions to reference the general list. Perhaps you could modify that page first so we can see how well it works? Otherwise, whatever... Thanks for letting me know. — RJH (talk) 15:22, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I have been placing the eponym information at the end of the lead, as it is the least important aspect of a lunar crater article. — RJH (talk) 18:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'll do that from now on. Daniel Bush 18:51, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Matthias Groote.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jackaranga 23:58, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac 23:43, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Javad Zarif.gif) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Javad Zarif.gif.

Thank you. Fair use rationale for Image:David Fowler.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:David Fowler.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 06:18, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
