Notability edit

Hi Schwede66, thanks for the your comments on British rowers. I have had a similar discussion in the past about notability and would argue that any sports person who is capped at full international level by Great Britain (or their respective nation) in their respective sport is notable (even more so in a major championship). You only have to look at football if the arguement arises because bios are completed on all football players right down to tier 5, 6 & 7 of the football pyramid and if comparing a bio for an international rower competing in the World Championships against a footballer that played several times for Forest Green Rovers or Solihull Moors FC then clearly a justified arguement exists. Your GA nomination of Hokitika Clock Tower edit

The article Hokitika Clock Tower you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Hokitika Clock Tower for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Postcard #5 edit

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 4 October: Hokitika

Kia ora from Hokitika! Tomorrow I pack up the car and head to Greymouth to present to Development West Coast our previous month's work, before heading south • Yes, Glacier Country are supplying accommodation in south WestlandŌkārito, Franz Josef, and Fox – for the next two weeks. Possibly because I mouthed off to the media that Fox Glacier's entry is so short who would want to stay there? • So this week it's Ōkārito (splitting the article into settlement and lagoon), kōtuku, spoonbills, the West Coast Wildlife Centre (Q99767675), rowi, Franz Josef glacier (and NZ glacier photos in general glacier articles), historic buildings thereabouts, etc • I uploaded lots of Stewart Nimmo photos of the Haast area, and have some Paparoa ones by Jase Blair coming soon. • Pakoire noticed that Fayne Robinson (Q99836010) needs an article – can we collaborate on one? He's def notable and we need more coverage of Māori from the Coast. • Also women: see the Westland women in the WikiProject Hokitika Museum Google doc and Hokitika Museum Google drive. • Last week I wrote or improved articles about Hokitika Museum, Lake Kaniere, History House Museum, Lake Mahinapua, and Westland District Library. Error check, cleanup etc welcome. It's great to be able to work from folders and scrapbooks stuffed full of newspaper clippings! • Housekeeping: Thank you all for collaborating and filling in gaps, especially with historic buildings. Paora has been doing some great work. Please keep letting me know of any photos you need taking on the spot. • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

Gorgeous Lake Kaniere. Yes, it really does look like this.

Category:Unidentified buildings in New Zealand edit

Kia ora Schwede66, was looking for something new to do. Have been working my way through School profiles as well lately. Anyway, with the photos. What are your thoughts on what needs to be done, as the first one I came across, it now appears like it maybe all written up? NZFC(talk)(cont) 04:36, 8 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Postcard #6 edit

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 11 October: Franz Josef

Gidday from Franz Josef/Waiau! Deserted tourist town, everything's a bit pricey, but there are kea circling over the main street which makes up for a lot • I just spent three days in Ōkārito, wrote articles about pakihi and Ōkārito lagoon, and took/was given a lot of photos of Kōtuku and hiking trails. A dearth of printed sources on Ōkārito but there are enough photos and info to make at least sections/galleries for buildings like Donovan's Store (Q79300924), Ōkārito School (Q79303038), and Ōkārito Obelisk (Q79309599) on its article • There are too many photos of Franz Josef glacier! It would be great to make a curated gallery of the most useful ones on its Commons page. Also finding and uploading good photos from DigitalNZ and the Macmillan Brown A. C. Graham Collection would help heaps • Local heritage sites that need articles: the Hendes Gallery, Defiance Hut, Chancellor Hut • I'll be spending Tuesday in the West Coast Wildlife Centre, looking at baby kiwi and improving Haast Tokoeka and Rowi articles • Great to see a new Fayne Robinson article from Pakoire, and Maida Bryant from MurielMary; Paora's been beavering away on lists of mayors • Housekeeping: do reach out to any of the team for a hand if some random editor knocks you back or makes trouble. Don't let them rattle you! We're here to help each other. • Take care and be kind — Giantflightlessbirds

In a few decades the Waiho River bed will be higher than Franz Josef. Won't that be fun!

Postcard #7 edit

Final Postcard from the West Coast

Friday 23 October:Reefton

Kia ora koutou from Reefton! • We're in the last few days of the project, so time to wrap up loose ends. • Most of the last week I was based in in Fox Glacier, organising photo uploads from Fox Glacier Guiding of the glacier itself and Chancellor Hut, check them out • I've also photographed hiking trails and worked on articles about the West Coast Wildlife Centre, Lake Gault and Lake Matheson • Here in Reefton I'm improving the article about the town, have found info on the Inangahua County Library for DrThneed, and am writing about the Reefton Distillery • There are photos of all of Reeftons's historic buildings (and I've added a few), but no articles about the Reefton Courthouse or the Reefton School of Mines, and the Reefton Power Station article could do with work • Since I last wrote DrThneed has been hard at work on libraries, there's a nice Donovan's Store article from Gertrude206, much-needed improvements to pounamu by Pakoire, and Paora's been super-industrious with historic buildings but most importantly managed to produce a photo of the giant sandfly of PukekuraHousekeeping: I'm sending out prizes kindly donated by Development West Coast and Friends of Waiuta to those of you who've worked hardest on the project, so if I ask for a postal address that's why. But even if you just signed up to get these postcards, that's fine too! • Thank you all for making a wonderful project work; I've never coordinated a team effort like this, and I think it's potentially a model for other edit-a-thons. Its been great fun. And I hope this has inspired you to keep chipping away, improving the coverage of New Zealand's beautiful West Coast. Ka kite ano, — Giantflightlessbirds

Untitled edit

Hi Schwede66. I’m new to the Wikipedia editing, but i’m trying to add intresting info.

The page i’m trying to add to is: Heather Tanguay ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heather_Tanguay#Early_life_and_family )

I’m trying to add the following info under the section EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY: Heather’s oldest grandson is the former IL Ulfstind (link to wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IL_Ulfstind ) footballer Henning Kvaal-Tanguay.

Here is the reference to his footballing career at the club: https://www.fotball.no/fotballdata/person/profil/?fiksId=2409143

Henning Kvaal-Tanguay is a notable and well known figure in Northern Norway, and his connection to Heather Tanguay will help boost the viewing numbers of her wikipedia page.

Hope this information helps. Please contact for further info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.189.25.18 (talk) 02:22, 9 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I've already left you a message on User talk:109.189.25.18 about what to do and what not to do. IL Ulfstind doesn't even mention Kvaal-Tanguay. Why would the information be of relevance? The person profile is one of a thousand. The club is sixth tier in Norway. Schwede66 02:29, 9 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for answer. Wanted to help with intresting info to the page, especially with fun fact that few people know about. How many former kiwi mayors have grandsons playing football in Northern Norway above the arctic circle? The english page for the club, IL Ulfstind, is quite poor. But the club is well known in the area and the players are highly regarded in the community. Here is even an newspaper article from when he (Henning Kvaal-Tanguay) first joined the club’s youth setup after his move from Palmerston North, were Heather Tanguay was the mayor. Missing cite in Norman King (New Zealand politician) edit

Back in 2012, you added short cite to "Zavos 1978" but no such source is listed in the bibliography. Can you please add? Also, suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. All you need to do is copy and paste importScript('User:Svick/HarvErrors.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Svick/HarvErrors.js]] to your common.js page. Your reversions of my edits to "Template:NewZealand-gov-stub" edit

Greetings and felicitations. I noticed that you reverted my edit to Template:NewZealand-gov-stub with the reason

Undid revision 989078085 by DocWatson42 (talk) restore as per MOS:HYPHEN

I actually made that change per MOS:SUFFIXDASH, since "New Zealand" is a spaced compound. In light of this would you please be so kind as to undo your reversion? —DocWatson42 (talk) 07:53, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@DocWatson42: Self-reverted as requested. I think I've come across MOS:PREFIXDASH and MOS:SUFFIXDASH before, but it's so obscure that it may be worth using those links in an edit summary so that other editors can read up on it. Schwede66 18:05, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Next election edit

I think you have a typo in the html comment you added at 2020 New Zealand general election. The comment says "before October 2022, do not change this to 2023; your edit will be reverted". I think your mention of reversion applies to changing the word "Next", but the year in the comment "October 2022" appears to be incorrect. If I'm right, please change it. If there's something I don't understand about the electoral cycle, please post on the talk page of the article to explain why this Parliament can not last beyond two years.-gadfium 19:52, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sorry if it's a bit obscure, gadfium. If an early election hasn't been called by October 2022, we know that the election will be held in 2023. It takes a wee while for an election to go through the process after being called and it must be held within the time frame specified of the law. So by October 2022, we'll know that it will be held in 2023. Before then, a snap election may be held in an earlier year. Schwede66 20:11, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps you should expand the html comment then, because I doubt I'll be the only person to misunderstand it.-gadfium 20:18, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
How's that? Schwede66 21:02, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
All good, thanks.-gadfium 21:22, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Confusing reference in an article on Himalayan Tahr, and sections out of place edit

moved to here from m:User talk:Schwede66

I have been researching Himalayan tahr in New Zealand and found this article: Himalayan tahr

In the section "Current control method" the following statements is made

"In New Zealand alone, an estimated $840M have been spent on alien species per year (0.9% of GNP), 25% being towards vertebrate mammals. Of these total costs, $400 M have been dedicated to defense against the invasive species. If conditions maintain, "the total cost of alien vertebrates in New Zealand may therefore exceed $270 million per year".[33]

The reference (33) for this statement is:

Clout, M. N. 2002. Ecological and economic costs of alien species in New Zealand. Pages 190-193 in D. Pimentel, editor. Biological Invasions. CRC Press

The referencing is a bit unclear - it's a simple text box and not the usual WP style. I think the editor wants to cite the Clout article in Pimenter's book "Biological Invasions" of which I have yet to find an online copy to read. I don't know if I should change the format of the reference as I haven't seen the source material.

Also the sections in the article: Control by hunting Current Control method seem to be general sections which are not attached to the section on New Zealand although they relate only to New Zealand. What would you advise? Should I just move the sections and put them with the New Zealand section? Many thanks Christine User talk:Noracrentiss 26 November 2020

@Noracrentiss: I've moved this to here as I don't keep an eye on my meta.wiki page. To answer your question on the format of the reference, there's nothing wrong with reformatting it. In fact, it would be good if you could apply a reference template as part of a tidy up. With regards to your content questions, I'm afraid it isn't an area of interest to me. Hence, I'll stay out of that. In a general sense, I would always encourage other editors to go ahead and make something better. If others disagree, that's a perfect opportunity to discuss the issue on the article's talk page towards agreement. I hope that helps. Schwede66 08:42, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, reference has been re-fornmatted. Noracrentiss (talk) 07:45, 27 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dixon Jr. edit

I saw your edit changing Dixon to Dixon Jr. Typically per MOS:SURNAME, the surname can be presumed to refer to the subject of the biography. Also at that point in the article, the two previous uses of "Dixon"'s also referred to the younger one, so it shouldn't be ambiguous which Dixon is being referred to. In any event, "Dixon Jr." might not be correct either. "Jr" is typically only used when the father and son share the same middle name, but it's not apparent from his father's article what his middle name was. I'll leave it to your discretion. I already approved the DYK. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 18:30, 15 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Issue regarding reverting my edit edit

Hi @Schwede66. I noticed you reverted my edit on the page of Peter Fraser, when I removed the "PC" postnominal letter from his title. "PC" is only for peers in the privy council, in order to distinguish them from peers who arent in the privy council, as all peers will have a suffix, and those below a marquess will use "the right honourable", even if they arent in the PC. Non-peers on the other hand will just use "the right honourable" to identify themselves as being in the privy council, so the postnominal letter shouldnt be used for non-peers. Therefore in the case of Peter Fraser, his title would be The Right Honourable Peter Fraser, CH (Though of course there isnt any official rules on styles of address, this is just what is commonly done). Hopefully that all makes sense. NotADev (talk) 01:12, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@NotADev: You cannot just go round and remove content without an edit summary and on top of it marking this as a minor edit. Where is the discussion about the above issue? If there is one, and consensus was achieved along the lines you outline here, you need to refer to that in an edit summary. If the discussion hasn't happened yet, I suggest you initiate that. Schwede66 01:17, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not sure how you don’t see this as a minor edit, the difference to somebody reading it would nugatory and would surely be considered minor. And uh, i can start a discussion but i fear nobody else will contribute to it for a while, so it would be pretty pointless for such a petty edit. The Bledisloe Medal was instituted in 1930 by the then Governor-General of New Zealand, Lord Bledisloe. The original terms for the award of the Bledisloe Medal set out in 1930 specified that recipients should be alumni of the institution. In 1995 the Lincoln University Council approved new conditions. These expanded eligibility to current or past staff members, with the basic criteria for the award remaining the same: “Making an outstanding contribution in their chosen field, advancing New Zealand's interests and/or bringing credit to Lincoln University."
