AWB

It's very useful for my purposes. You specify a category and it opens all the pages in that category (alternatively, you specify a page and it opens the links on that page), and you can undertake maintenance tasks. It gives you lots of suggestions stemming from the Manual of Styles. One of the tasks I use it for is to add politics parameters to WPNZ. I haven't really explored what it can do and it's probably much more powerful than that. Schwede66 18:53, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello Linbit, thanks for the response. No pressure, but since you ask a couple of questions, I thought I'd give some context. The requirements are to have an interest in the subject. What's involved? Nothing, really. You just join a bunch of like-minded people, there's a project where some issues get discussed from time to time, and there's a huge long list of things that one can do. It's all there on the project page and its talk page. Of course, you could simply watchlist those pages, chip in whenever you feel like it, or go there and ask questions. Or do all those things, and stick the taskforce box onto your user page, thus formally joining. That's all there is to it really. I guess the biggest advantage for you is to be able to ask questions (e.g. how do I do succession boxes) - put it onto the talk page and you'd expect an answer pretty swiftly. Then again, you'd get the answers whether or not you formally join. It's all one big happy family :) Schwede66 03:50, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello Schwede66, I have decided to join the project. I am concerned that the articles about New Zealand general elections are not written in a consistent way - if you compare the articles on elections from 1990 onwards to those for 1987 and before, you will see what I mean. I would like to rewrite them all so that they are consistent, but unfortunately my changes at one article (for the 2005 election) have been reverted. That's great news that you'd like to join - a warm welcome! It seems you are feeling annoyed about New Zealand general election, 2005 and I can understand that. I suggest that you post something about your proposal on the taskforce talk page (given that it will affect not just one article, but eventually a whole lot of them) and I will comment on it there, as that's the right place to have the discussion. I suggest that you leave a short note on the election page's talk page that the discussion is happening somewhere else, and I would specifically invite Moriori to participate. Moriori has just reverted me again at the 2005 election article, this time without any explanation. It doesn't come across as very friendly. Moriori, I have tried to make several changes to the lead of the article. You reverted them all. You only gave a reason for objecting to one of the changes I made. Hello Moriori, I don't think that Linbit came to my talk page to 'complain'. I think he sought some guidance, and I get the impression that he felt uneasy about the way you had interacted with him. It's perfectly ok in my book to seek counsel somewhere and I for one did not perceive this as a complaint.

I would like to give you some feedback, Moriori, and it's intended as constructive criticism with the intention that you can give this some reflection, and are ultimately perceived in a better light. Your editing style is somewhat bold and there's nothing necessarily wrong with being bold when editing articles, but the same behaviour can have an abrasive feel to it when it is employed while interacting with other editors. This would especially be so when interacting with new editors and WP:BITE gives some useful guidance on what should and shouldn't be done. As I say, this is intended as some constructive feedback, as I assume that you are not aware that you come across in a way that's not as welcoming and inclusive as should be expected, so that you have a chance to reflect on this and bring about an improvement.

The reason that I've invited Linbit to participate in the politics taskforce is that I detect a keen editor with a strong interest in politics who, with still under 100 edits, has made some very valuable contributions. My preference would be that you join me in giving him some positive encouragement, as he could be a real asset to have.

I hope you value this feedback - it's well intentioned. I value your ability to write in a very concise way and would be delighted to see you interacting with others in a way that demonstrates that you value them for their strength. Hello Linbit, good to hear from you. Are you in the habit of looking at the history page of articles, checking out the edit summaries? There, you'll see that two previous editors have commented that the word 'only' is not neutral. And yes, it's a qualifier. If you are a fan of that party, then you might take offence ("No, it's not 'only' 1050 votes - we really worked hard for it, expected to get 500, but received twice as many votes" is what they might say). So if it's left out, then the reader still gets the fact without there being a qualifier. You might still think that the word is helpful to the reader, but WP is a collaborative process, and if there's a few others who disagree, then one has to go with the flow. Does that help?

Related to this, you should fill out an edit summary yourself whenever you edit something in mainspace. It helps those who watchlist those articles, and it's obviously good when one wants to understand issues like we've got here. Providing an edit summary is part of the WP etiquette. Dunedin architect

Hi Schwede - it looks like a good start... I don't know that much about him myself, although I do have an interest in Dunedin history and work as an art critic, so architectures somewhat peripheral to that. For what it's worth, by the way, Mason & Wales is still one of Dunedin's main architecture firms. The Wikipedian who'd probably best be able ton extend the article is User:Peter Entwisle (talk), who is an expert in the field (literally - he has written numerous books on Dunedin history and architecture, and has his own article in Wikipedia). His wiki editing skills aren't brilliant, so it would need tidying up afterwards, but I'm sure he'd get a huge amount of information into the article. Names of May, Lusk & Hobbs added to Franklin electorate, but it looks as though Richard Hobbs was elected in a by-election (1878) as he was the MP for 1878-79 only. I hope that life is treating you well. I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to reply to your message. I’m so happy that you like the information I added on Wikipedia. I hope that you and many people have found it useful. There is still a lot more that I would like to add to the sections on the reforms carried out by the Liberal and Labour governments over the course of the Twentieth Century, as well as Willy Brandt’s achievements as chancellor.

After next week, I’m going to take a break from contributing to Wikipedia for a while as I’m going to be very busy in my personal life, but I will add some more information (and references) later in the year. I’ll also check out that talk page you told me about in a previous message.

Huia feedback

Hey man, thanks for your constructive feedback on the article back in June, I just fixed that issue with the 3 mentions of the bill in the lead and also, the lead has now been expanded in terms of length. Kahuroa, Casliber and I have together now got 3 new visual elements up and added to the article: a distribution map, 2 century old photographs of lowland deforestation in the North Island and a Callaeidae template. Both your other 2 suggestions are excellent and I would like to implement both before we go for FA review - with the references one, yeah it will take a few hours to sort out but I think it will be worth it and where a single source is used many times for an article, using this template seems to be standard practice in FAs across most subject areas R.E.M. for ex. Avon River

I have been to CHCH, and have had a geology course or two ... and although it seems reasonably obvious that the Avon River is in geological terms quite young, finding the NZ geology source that mentions the estimated age of the river (on the internet) is not easy.

I have cleaned up the text, but hope that you can find the source for this. The river's age is important in the context of the 2010 earthquake.

The article is 10,500 edits from being fully useful -- and the water table interconnections to the glaciers is still unclear to me. Eyreland (talk) 07:56, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

The Canterbury Museum probably has had a display on the region's river systems -- and indicated the age of all of them. Te Papa might have done the same too.

There is a NZ specific textbook on landforms and surface geology, but I don't believe it covered rivers by age.

Almost no NZ river is older than 10m years, as NZ was mostly 'drink' that long ago. The Nile and Amazon are at least 50m years old or something like that... Eyreland (talk) 08:51, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the enquiry. You may have noticed that I've recently worked on other things (3rd and 4th Parliament, tidying up electorate articles, working my way through unassessed politics articles (only 500 to go), and First Maori elections have all been rather time consuming). I'm still going to pull the mass-DYK off, but it won't happen by 9 October.

An overview page gives the status of what is ready. The talk page lists a few tasks. What I've been doing lately is to find the exact election date, and I've got as far as 1905 (John Hall) - something odd happened there (he was appointed, not elected), but I have still got to find a source for it. If you want to chip in, I'd say finding an obituary for each one would be the next logical step. Start with Henry Sawtell and work down the list.

If we both want to work on this, I'd say we should organise the talk page better, outlining (in a table?) what's been done and what is to do for each article. If you have other thoughts, please discuss. I value your input. Schwede66 19:25, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

I'd recommend that you start writing articles like that in user space and once they are ready, moved them into main space. That's even more important with BLPs (biographies of living people), as it gets around the problem of having unfinished articles put up for deletion. Do you want me to show you how to do that? Hey, how are you? I am going away to the beach for a week (without internet!), and I won't be able to maintain User:AlexNewArtBot/NZSearchResult and WP:NNZ. Well, it wasn't too hard at all. It can just be very time consuming, depending on how much effort one puts into it. For example, I've put {{WPNZ}} and, where appropriate, {{WPBiography}} tags on all articles before I shunted them across. I've also prodded or put up for AfD everything that required it. That takes a bit of time, I suppose. So it makes me even more appreciate the work that you undertake on an ongoing basis, and others before you. On an unrelated note, I should let you know that I've taken your talk page off my watchlist, as it's incredibly busy and sometimes it drowns out everything else. Although I indeed used the website noted as a source: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/antarctica-and-nz/timeline, I felt that I had rewritten it in my own words. Is there a way to get back what I had written so I can have another go at it?
