Style

Mary Shelley: while I agree that "the couple and her sister" is not ideal, we try hard not to name our subjects by given name alone (unless as children). Any idea how to avoid that? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:34, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Capitalisation of "church" by itself

Greetings. FYI the word "church" is not capitalised in Wikipedia articles by itself even when it is referring to a specific church such as the Church of England. In WP articles this principle is exactly the same as it is for universities and other institutions, even if those institutions capitalise them in their own publications. There are a few exceptions but this is not one of them. Please see MOS:INSTITUTIONS for further information. It includes "church" in its examples of words which are not capitalised by themselves. Philately symbols

Hi. I'd like to explain somewhere the various symbols for cancellation marks. Where would be a good place, do you think? Not all are available in Unicode, so I've created SVGs for CTO cancel (), pen cancel (), etc. But I'm not sure what they all mean, exactly, as I've only found explanations in German. Titles and styles

Hello,

Yesterday I made an edit that was reverted by this account. It is a convention in Wikipedia that those holders of titles (among them, Peers), shall have The Right Honourable as a prefix, their title in lieu of a name, and their Post-nominal letters in the Honorific Suffix field. Please refer to Valerie Amos, Baroness Amos, Margaret Thatcher, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, or Alexander Windsor, Earl of Ulster (who is not a peer but has his subsidiary title as a name), for further examples. WDC references on car pages

Hello Sbishop. Placings in the WDC achieved with a car are and always have been considered directly relevant to the car's article, hence why we have always reported on drivers' titles achieved with a particular model. Drivers use a chassis to compete just as much as a constructor uses a chassis to compete, so both championships are equally distant from the car as each other. Operation Mincement (film)

You reverted my edit as "Expresses personal POV about film script - not encyclopedic ". Hardly POV to show that the film-maker opted to insert a historically untrue bit of love-interest fluff, while excluding a vital bitter-sweet element of the book whereby the deliverer of the fake documents was ultimately hanged for his anti-Nazi efforts. Of course it is encylopaedic! There are so many examples (such as "The Last King of Scotland") where a film-maker takes a good true story and emasculates it with unbelievable nonsense. It would be fine to discuss the scriptwriter choices in a factual manner, including omissions and additions. But using terms such as 'superfluous' turns it into personal commentary. The user did this with my edit to Spencer film. He cited "British English" on edit summary which is no way an explanation for a not rather "minor" editing on the page. As an FYI on the revert on Julie Christie, it was part of a mass rollback from an IP hopping block evading editor causing a lot of disruption on actor's articles. Thank you. I should say that due to my pressing a button too early, the revert was published without the short explanation I intended to insert, which in brief was that the CIA and its 1950s publication cannot be regarded as a neutral and academic source for a view on whether Stalin was a dictator. How to avoid incredibly annoying notices from DPL Bot

Hi, greetings, etc. I see your talk page is plagued by notifications from a well-meaning but fuckwitted bot which is programmed to complain when you link to eg Pygmalion, since there are (strange as it may seem) multiple articles with this approximate title. That's what dab pages are for. The solution is unbelievably simple. Click Special:preferences → Gadgets → Appearance, and click/enable "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange". It does what it says on the tin. All you need to do (assuming you can read orange text) is to navigate to the specific article which you were intending to link to (out of the multitude of possibilities of which you you are now aware), copy the actual article title, and paste it between the time-honoured square brackets. Voilà!

Re: Nikolai Voznesensky - he was indeed dead: but karma works in many ways, and (if I may opine) you come across like some sort of Soviet-era commissar, as if N. Happy to help. I actually was hoping to be mildly insulting, which obviously didn't work quite as I intended. Nevertheless, is there not a case for connecting the importunate B's untimely demise to the restoration of N's reputation, since B seems to have caused N's downfall in the first place? I made an immediate connection when I worked out the timeline, and I suspect other readers would also like to be informed: but of course correlation does not imply causation. Reason for revert was "Not a reliable source". Sandler appears to be a reliable source. He is a historian and the author of more than 50 books. This factoid about Ziryab is also mentioned on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziryab#Cuisine so I have no reason to doubt it. The Moving Finger

Hi. I saw your edit summary reverting my edit on Agatha Christie's The Moving Finger. I have a copy of the book here—a recent US reprint—and it definitely says "an airplane accident." Do you have a copy of the book that says "motorcycle"? If so, perhaps this is a UK vs. US edition change, although I'm not sure why it would have been made. It may well be a US/UK thing. Yes, I do have a UK edition which refer to a motorcycle accident. Certainly there should eb consistency - in my view the easiest way to achieve this simply is to delete all reference to the cause of the accident. Hello, there. Since I am fully making a page for the second Elizabethan era, I noticed that you reverted my edit on Mary of Teck - the one where I said that she was also known as the Lonesome Queen.

This was simply not vandalism, but a misunderstanding on your part. I read it on some random website that she had been called that, but now I can't find the source for it. It wasn't vandalism, just lack of clarity.

That isn't the point. The official name of Finland isn't Finland and the official name of Italy isn't Italy, but English Wikipedia refers to those countries by their names in English, just as French Wikipedia, for exampel, refers to the United Kingdom as Royaume Uni. Persuasion

The new version of this film is adapted using unconventional filming techniques such as breaking the fourth wall. If you have not seen the film then possibly you could restore the additions to the plot section which were started. If you are not familiar with films which use the fourth wall then I could list some for you. The changes should be restored for me to finish the plot section. I am very familiar with what 'fourth wall' means and how it is used in this film. Your additions need to separate out the plot from commentary on filming technique, which belongs elsewhere in the article, if necessary in a new section. Thanks for adjusting the caption to the image. The Purple Rose of Cairo is one well known film plot which uses fourth wall in the Wikipedia Plot section, among other films that do this. There are so many fourth wall asides made in this new version of Persuasion that it seems it will need to mention the fourth wall in the Plot section, no matter who writes it. See the plot section to The Purple Rose of Cairo as an example. If you have seen the 2022 film Persuasion then you can include it using your way of stating it. I have read the summary section in The Purple Rose of Cairo article and it does mention the fourth wall issue - but does so by restricting itself to what the characters do, which I suppose is alright. Either the photo should appear alongside other photos in the article, as happens with some other people with blue plaques or, particularly if the article is already crowded, there should be a link in the 'see also section' at the foot of the article to the relevant English Heritage page at:

Hello Ponsonby. I noticed that you removed the explicit mention of Mike Wallace and reworded it to just "Several people" but looking at another actress page like Taraneh Alidoosti in which there are explicit mentions of people who reacted. The text on the Alidoosti page identifies a large number of well known people in the same profession as Alidoosti supporting her. It is unclear to me why an Irish politician with no connection to Barrera should be identified by name in this context, it appears quite random.Ponsonby100 (talk) 11:14, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

I see your point but, there is also a article like Mahsa Amini, in which there is mention of each celebrities's reactions.
