Welcome edit

Dear Shyamal, Viren and AshLin, thank you so much for your kind words and guidance. I am a newcomer, and it will take me a while to get used to Wiki. I was just browsing and saw that there are so few photographs on the site with regard to Indian Butterflies. I am a bit crazy about photographing them and have photos of most of them, and this can be seen on my site, Butterflies of Karnantaka so that you can guide me how best I can help the site. Thank you. Santosh 04:18, 20 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Santhosh, thanks for the beautiful images. It would be best if you added the images to the commons http://commons.wikimedia.org - that way it can be used in any language wiki including for instance the Indian language versions, without having to duplicate the images. Keep up the great contributions. Shyamal 08:58, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Santhosh, great stuff. As Shyamal said, add you images to commons. Its more useful there. Also within the image you have included your name along with a copyright mark. I think you will need to remove this copyright mark and upload again. This is because the mark is in direct conflict with the license you are uploading the pictures under which is cc-by-sa. --Viren 06:18, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Hi Namby,Reply

Welcome from my side too. But write something about yourself on your user page. How you got interested in butterflies and what resources you have. We're looking for more members to contribute in our informal Wikipedia Indian butterflies team. Care to devote some Wikipedia time on this? regards, AshLin 14:02, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Yellow_Orange_Tip.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Yellow_Orange_Tip.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 14:31, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

First steps to contributing in Wikipedia edit

Dear Santosh,

You are welcome anytime. However to contribute successfully to Wikipedia requires you to learn how to use wikitext and wikiformatting as also policy and general rules.

For example, you mistakenly placed a message for me on my user page, whereas it should have been on the talk page. I have moved it now. I'm using this is an example :).

Your next question will be, 'How?'. For this, first read all the pages linked at the top by MyNameIsNotBob .

Secondly, visit WikiProject Lepidoptera which is meant for people, like you, who are interested in working with Wikipedia Lepidoptera articles.

Thirdly, do get involved with scientific names and other details. Without that knowledge, you will face barriers to understanding the finer aspects of Indian butterflies and moths (dont miss out on this wonderful group of insects).

Fourthly, keep your interest alive. Just photograph whatever you can. Do read online tutorials to learn to take excellent photos. See Yuwaraj Gurjar's photo-album pages. Find the link on ButterflyIndia archives of about a month ago.

Thats all for now, that at least two months work. Have fun. bye. AshLin 10:35, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

How and where to upload images edit

Hi santhosh, I've been thru your images on your pages. You really have a good set. Now I think first we need to guide you as to how to upload your images and where to upload them to. Now this is gonna be a large thing, so copy and paste it in notepad or something so you can refer to it as you implement the steps

Step 1: Where to upload We upload all images to wikimedia commons. http://commons.wikimedia.org/. You will probably need to create an account here for yourself. The point of commons is that it is a common palce where persons can upload images, videos, etc, for use in any wikiproject. You have been uploading only to the english wikipedia. Images here are limited in their usability and exposure.

So create an account, log in and click on "upload file". Now read on.

Step 2: How to upload

You've uploaded images before so you know how to upload stuff. I just want to explain that you need to put some "stories" for each image uploaded. I normally use this template

{{Information
|Description =
|Source = 'self'
|Date = ''
|Author = Viren Vaz (self)
|Permission = cc-by-sa-2.5
|other_versions = ''none''
|}}

Description is pretty much the caption. Add a nice detailed caption. Like "so and so sitting on so and so thing and doing so and so." Source is details about who took the image (In your case it would be self), where the image was taken and pretty much any other information you wanna add. I use cc-by-sa-2.5 as my permission. Read about it here [1]

You also MUST add a license to the image. The choice of licenses are given in a drop down box below the description box.

Step 3: Categorising

OK here comes the most important part, Categorisation. There are 2 ways of doing this, one is to tag the images with the closest category you can find. For eg. Lemon Pansy would get tagged with the nymphalid category, if Junonia exists then that would be the category (Lemon Pansy belongs to the genus Junonia of the family Nymphalidae). That way other ppl can find the image. We dont use this method, personally I feel the images get lost in the 100s of images in the same category. What we do is create an article for each species and categorise the article under the family it belongs to. Heres a sample page

;Species: ''Limenitis procris''; ([[Pieter Cramer|Cramer]], date = 1777)
;Family: Nymphalidae
;English: Commander
<gallery>
Image:RN012 Limenitis procris.jpg|Commander butterfly
Image:Commander un.jpg|Commander UN
Image:Commander egg.jpg|Egg of Commander
Image:Cat commander.jpg|Caterpillar of Commander
Image:Commander frass chain.jpg|Frass chain made by the caterpillar of Commander
Image:Commander pupa.jpg|Pupa of Commander
</gallery>
[[category:Nymphalidae]]

Go to the page and see how it looks commons:Limenitis_procris This way it is much easier to find images. Sometime the images you add already have an article. At those times just add the image between the gallery tags. After that you can add it to an article on wikipedia using exactly the same method you have been following.

OH YEAH. Please remove the copyright mark from your images. The name is no problem but if you could put it in a corner and use a subtle font color it would be appreciated.

Thats it now go tiger go. a big grin and a thumbs up

I know it looks complex. It takes a bit of getting used to, but doing it right the first time avoids the need to keep going back and changing something or adding a category or license. We are always here to call upon in case of messups. Remember you dont have rights to mess up something so bad that it cant be fixed with a sorry and a simple revert, so, relax and enjoy contributing. --Viren 15:36, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Id of Danaind edit

Hi Santosh, The picture [2] is that of Blue Tiger, Tirumala limniace and not that of Dark Blue Tiger, Tirumala septentrionis.

Please reload this image with correct name in Wikimedia Commons and delete your image in Wikipedia. If you want I'll do it for you. Regards, AshLin 14:47, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
