Pope Sixtus I image edit

Hello, I'm Cakelot1. I noticed your edits to add images to a variety of papal articles such as Pope Sixtus I and have reverted them. If you want to practice editing, please use your sandbox. If you think a mistake was made, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Catholicism/Archive 2020#RfC on non-contemporary images of popes for relevant discussion of this sort of thing. Please also provide an edit summary in future to explain your contributions. Cakelot1 (talk) 13:46, 21 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

January 2022 edit

Please do not remove content or templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to George I of Greece, without giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your content removal does not appear to be constructive and has been reverted. If you only meant to make a test edit, please use your sandbox for that. Thank you. DrKay (talk) 21:06, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please do not use styles that are nonstandard, unusual, inappropriate or difficult to understand in articles, as you did in George I of Greece. There is a Manual of Style, and edits should not deliberately go against it without special reason. Per MOS:CAPTION, 'unambiguous depictions of the subject of the article' do not require captions and 'no caption is necessary for a portrait of the subject'. File:His Holiness Pope Alexander VIII.jpg edit

Hi Orson12345, I saw that, with your secondary user account, you've requested to rename this file to the name of His Holiness Pope Alexander VIII, declaring that the page was wrong. This is an arbitrary argument because you doesn't have any reliable reference which depicts that this portrait was created after the election of Pietro Ottoboni as Pope Alexander VIII.

In fact, there are some pictures of other cardinals wearing clothes quite similar to the papal vestments (some photos of paintings are in Commons). I understand you prefer this portrait as the main, I also prefer it because, with the knowledge of the author's identity, we can estimate the painting's chronological location to Alexander VIII's time. Bus the problem is that the official website where you obtained this file, the page of the Museo Antoniano (and also the reference to the Encyclopedia Treccani), depicts the portrait created shortly before the election of Ottoboni as Pope. Here I'm citing the original descriptions:

  • L. Dorigny, Ritratto del cardinale Pietro Ottoboni (papa Alessandro VIII) —English: L. Dorigny, Portrait of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (Pope Alexander VIII)—.

  • Il cardinale Pietro Ottoboni in un ritratto di Louis Dorigny, realizzato prima dell'ascesa al soglio pontificio come Alessandro VIII, Museo Civico, Padova —English: Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni in a portrait of Louis Dorigny, made before his ascension to the papal throne as Alexander VIII, Museo Civico, Padua—.

I also understand that you are going to explain that it is an obvious error and therefore, this portrait may had been created after Alexander VIII's papal election because the depicted vestments. Some time ago, before my IP connection address changed, we talked about this in the discussion page of the article, and I'd presented you the references from which I'd obtained the information of this painting and I suggested to assume their description as the real unless another reliable source(s) depict that this is an error and can give the real date of creation (which could help to identify it as Cardinal or Pope). With this, when I saw that you requested to rename the file with the name of Pope, I was searching another reference which can describes the real situation of the portrait to put in the article and in the file. I didn't found nothing but, in the page of the Museo Antoniano, there is the phone and mail to contact with the museum. Therefore, I think that, if there isn't any reliable source that can explain the real depiction of the painting, we can ask to the museum for more information about it. Probably, the admins of the collection will can give us new information about the painting to find its original depict, and solve this problem.

The information to contact with the museum is just before the photo gallery in which appears the portrait, I wish this can help.--81.40.135.122 (talk) 13:03, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I would be open to contacting only issue I had is that some of the paintings were all ready contemporary but you would replace with ones that didn’t look as nice as the previous one I’ve always been an art and history buff so it’s important for me that the best possible painting is being used in the info box. But I apologize for my (at times) controlling actions sometimes I can be a bit of a control freak but I’ll try work on this. Last a spent a good two houses trying to find anything about that painting I found nothing except from the original website. Have a nice day! Orson12345 (talk) 17:35, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's exactly what happened to me, and for this is why I suggested contacting the museum to try to clarify when it was really made, which could allow us to use this painting as the main one if it really represents him as Pope, in case it is confirmed that the current title is wrong.--81.40.135.122 (talk) 10:42, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

March 2022 edit

Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits a summary may be quite brief.

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing →   Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Celia Homeford (talk) 14:09, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Celia Homeford: I reverted your edit by accident. And there’s no need to put Phillip III (Phillip II of Portugal) readers can simply read that when they go Philip III page. Orson12345 (talk) 14:12, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
You made this revert by accident? You shouldn't be reverting good faith and clearly explained edits without an edit summary. Celia Homeford (talk) 14:18, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I was talking about the previous edit you made that I reverted but then changed back. Apologizes for forgetting to fill the edit summary. Orson12345 (talk) 14:25, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Philip II of Spain. Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. You claim at my talk page that you support putting everything back the way it was, so do so. It's been without the numeral for at least a decade, if not longer. Celia Homeford (talk) 14:48, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I stated for you to revert everything because I don’t want to do it just for you to revert everything back. Orson12345 (talk) 14:53, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I am reverting everything, back to the way it's been for years and years (over a decade on Philip II). The stable version has the consensus of the community and trying to impose your new change is Wikipedia:Disruptive editing, for which you can be blocked. Celia Homeford (talk) 14:55, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Pope Benedict XIII Image edit

Hi, I understand that your portrait has good quality but the current one has got known creator and known dates of creation which precise the time when the painting was made, so we can estimate that it was created during Benedict XIII's pontificate. This information should be more relevant than another portrait that could be made a lot of time after the Pontiff's death. I hope than you can understant it, thanks. --79.145.148.64 (talk) 07:31, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

P.S., the portrait which you improved is also in the article, precisely in the infobox of the beatification process. --79.145.148.64 (talk) 07:33, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I understand your point but every portrait that you have put has gotten to stay and frankly I don’t thinks it’s right for me to compromise every single time we have an interaction. Perhaps the original image can stay in the info box and the image you put can be placed in the article. Orson12345 (talk) 17:15, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm not trying to compete with you, it's not about "beating you" or "you beating me", it has nothing to do with that. Honestly, the previous portrait, which is of known authorship and contemporary to the pope, is more appropriate due to its historical relevance. In addition, I think that changing the image for the aesthetic preferences of each person doesn't seem like an objective enough argument to carry out in an encyclopedia.
After this, I'm going to revert the edition to open a consensus in which community can vote which is the most apropiate for search an objective decission.

79.145.148.64 (talk) 19:56, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I’ve always been very willing to compromise. And I never said anything about a competition or me beating you. These “compromises” we come too are always what you want and what I want always gets thrown out the window and that is simply not fair. But I don’t appreciate you misconstruing what I said in the article talk page. Orson12345 (talk) 20:21, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
As I'd said in the article talk page, I don't getting thrown all your contributions out the window, there are some whith which I agree with you and when another person treates to change it without reasonable explanation I tried to restored to your last contribution, so I'm not throwing your editing out a window and I don't edit with this criteria as you think. If you prefer, I can go away and stop editing if you like, but in contrast with other IPs or registered users, I try to edit with the most objective vision possible.79.145.148.64 (talk) 20:46, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I never said for you to stop editing and I would never suggest for another editor to stop editing. But I just simply don’t agree with the changes you have made to several pope articles which is fine we can agree to disagree. Orson12345 (talk) 20:50, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I will no longer revert anything you do since there’s no point to doing so. Orson12345 (talk) 20:54, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry, I'm leaving the project now. I didn't banning you, I was treating to do constructive editions as I saw in similar articles, but it appears that you are angry for that. I don't treating to annoy users for free. But dom't worry, I'm leaving now the project.

I'm going to restore your contributions also. Good contributions! 79.145.148.64 (talk) 21:03, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Everything thing you are saying is false I have no problem with you editing. But you don’t seem to want to compromise with anything. But as I’ve said several times we can agree to disagree. Orson12345 (talk) 21:08, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Founding Fathers RFC edit

I'm one of the principal participants (the initiator but not moderator) of the Request for Comment on whether the signers of the Continental Association are considered founding founders of the USA. I just noticed your comment in the Discussion subsection of the RFC, which you began with "No" in bold. Did you intend this as an actual vote in the RFC? If so, to have it counted, you probably should move this up to the bottom of the RFC voting section below the vote previously last entered by user Gog the Mild. This suggestion is in no way intended to influence your vote. Your comment just seemed out of place. If you wish, you may indicate in your Edit Summary that you're moving it at my suggestion, though this isn't required in any way. Thank you. Allreet (talk) 14:13, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Allreet: I moved my vote to the survey section thanks for the advice. Have a nice day! Orson12345 (talk) 16:05, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Time for a little housekeeping? edit

Hi RP. Your talk page is getting kinda crazy. Just a suggestion but it might be time to do a little housekeeping. You can usually safely delete automated messages and for the rest, set up one of the auto-archiving plans. See WP:ARCHIVE. Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Arran edit

Dear Robert, if I may call you so, I see you are an experienced wikipedian and a member of WP:WikiProject Royalty and Nobility, which I am not. You should know better. However, I wonder why in the article Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Arran you change the argument of the "name" parameter of the infobox from "Richard Butler" to "The Earl of Arran". This is quite plainly not his name, but, if I understand it right, a style or part of it. The recent FA John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, promoted by Gog the Mild and promoted by Hog Farm uses the same infobox "Noble" and has name=John Hastings and title=Earl of Pembroke. Do do this simply so that it reads "The Right Honorable the Earl of Arran" above the image on the infobox, which is according to Forms of address in the United Kingdom the style you would put on an envelope addressed to him? I do not think this would be a good reason to depart from how the name parameter should normally be filled in. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 08:50, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello there! Well, my opinion on the name parameter is that it should be their title not their real name. Most nobles would have been addressed and known by their title, not their personal name. The majority of articles on Wikipedia refer to various nobles by their title, not their actual name. One is example is the FA article you mentioned, John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, in which he is mostly referred to as “Pembroke” not “John Hastings”. The majority of British nobles/peers on Wikipedia are formatted as the title being there name. The only time I see in wiki articles that nobles aren’t referred to by their title is in the early life section, when they do not yet have a title, but once they have one, they are normally referred to by that title. Another example of them being known by their titles is the English/British government succession boxes, all of them are referred to by their title, not their name. As most articles use the title as the name, I was simply trying to bring some consistency to nobility articles, since yes, the majority do use the title, some do not. I hope I answered your questions! Kind regards, ✠ Robertus Pius ✠ (TalkContribs) 15:04, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Dear Robert. I agree of course with you that in the text these noblemen, as soon as they start their tenure, should be called by their title, just "Arran" (not "The Earl of Arran") in the present case. The cited FA also calls the subject "Pembroke" in the text but sets the infobox's name parameter to "John Hastings" and its title parameter to "Earl of Pembroke". You should follow that example. Besides, the FA omits the honorific_prefix, probably for conciseness. Otherwise, look for a counter-example: an FA that uses the mentioned Infobox parameters as you do. Do you think this issue should be discussed on the talk page of your Wikiproject? or on the talk page of the Infobox noble template? With thanks and best regards. Johannes Schade (talk) 17:44, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, something I have noticed is that the medieval and many of the early renaissance nobles are formatted the way Pembroke’s infobox is. Most of the 17th, 18th, and 19th century nobles are formatted with the title being the name on the infobox. Not sure why there’s this inconsistency. Possibly because different editors edit these different eras. A lot of Wikipedia is based on personal opinions, but I think there should be more consistency in Wikipedia. This discussion would probably be more suited for the nobility or office holder infobox talk page, you may start a discussion if you wish. But, from a consistency point of view, there’s more nobles to have the title as the name than ones who don’t. So to have consistency, it would be better to change the few then the many. But that’s just my opinion. Thanks, ✠ Robertus Pius ✠ (TalkContribs) 20:01, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thomas Butler, 6th Earl of Ossory edit

Dear Robert, looking back at the infobox image I put on Thomas Butler, 6th Earl of Ossory I agree with you that the "Zoomed in lead image looks terrible". User Aintabli made me a similar remark in April ("his pic zoomed in is creepy") on the infobox picture I had put on Antoine Hamilton. In that case I replaced it with a less zoomed-in one that Aintabli seems to have accepted. I did the same now with Ossory. Please have a look. I hope you find it acceptable. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 10:59, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

To be honest, it looks just as zoomed in as before. I personally don’t see the reason to have small cropped/zoomed in images as the lead image on articles, but I am aware some editors prefer that. I have made this similar argument with several other articles that have zoomed in lead images, some editors agreed, some did not. I personally think the full portrait looks better as the lead image, but you have a different opinion, which is perfectly fine. I’m not too passionate about it, so if the zoomed image stays, I’m fine with that. Thanks, ✠ Robertus Pius ✠ (TalkContribs) 15:14, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Dear Robert, thank you for the fast reply and your openness to discussion. I like to treat the lead image like a passport photo, if possible. I always give the full uncropped (unzoomed image) in the text. I find that sometimes the full picture shows much more the fashion of the time than the personality. Both aspects are of course interesting. The full image in the text can have a longer caption whereas in the infobox the caption should normally not exceed a single line. I have looked for examples of where you had to face editors who preferred cropped images. The only example I found was Salmon P. Chase. Do you remember others? Has this ever been discussed in detail? With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 19:18, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, it’s hard to remember. I do believe I had tried to put a less cropped version of William Henry Harrison’s lead image but it was reverted, and I believe it was talked about in the talk page, or maybe it was just back and forth edit summaries. I’m sure there have been detailed discussions about this matter but I either don’t recall or they were before my time on Wikipedia. Kind regards, ✠ Robertus Pius ✠ (TalkContribs) 19:52, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I had a look at William Henry Harrison, you remember right Your zoom-out to the full painted portrait was reverted. However the cropped version had a caption saying "official portrait" so one would have expected to see the full portrait. This was not really dicussed on the talk page. Thanks for your kindness and all your trouble, bye, Johannes Schade (talk) 08:18, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Morphia edit

Hi, Robertus Pius. Since you seemed quite happy to take on the Baldwin V review, I was going to ask you whether you would be interested in reviewing the article about Queen Morphia as well. It is not too long (due to a modest coverage in primary sources), but now I see that you have not been much active in the past couple of weeks. Let me know if you are up for it; I would like to nominate it for DYK by Sunday! Surtsicna (talk) 22:43, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sure! Let me know when you nominate it for GA and I’ll take a look at it. Kind regards, ✠ Robertus Pius ✠ (TalkContribs) 02:53, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

No problem. I just wanted to give you first dibs :D There will be more. I intend to nominate Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem, Maria Komnene, Queen of Jerusalem, Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, Agnes of Courtenay, and, after I am done with them, Guy of Lusignan and Amalric of Jerusalem too. Happy editing! Surtsicna (talk) 18:42, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
