Hi Rigadoun, 2 paragraphs in this entry list very different stats of tsunami casualties. You've stated an estimated 160,000 killed or mising in the opening paragraph & later on 230,000 is the estimated number. While I know that numbers vary, your readers will need one estimate to work with, please. Thanks very much, Jennifer—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.143.93.57 (talkcontribs)

What list are you referring to? I don't remember editing an article with tsunami casualties. Rigadoun (talk) 16:53, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

TSL edit

If you're going to add a criticism from a source, at least read the source to make sure whatever is being criticized is actually mentioned in the potential source in question. WAVY 10 17:06, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

To give a response, that doesn't provide much assistance because of the fact that he doesn't call TSL by name. Therefore, whoever removed the mention probably assumed (judging from that fact) that the inclusion was original research, which is frowned upon strongly at Wikipedia. WAVY 10 17:18, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
If that can be downloaded, go right ahead (but I would try to add a link to the actual audio to be safe). WAVY 10 17:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
What I meant was (if possible) converting the section to the .ogg format as providing that separately from the citation. One more thing is that it would probably be beneficial to bring up these things in a talk page first. WAVY 10 17:36, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
If not, I'd bring it up to the talk page for TSL and/or the other editors who regularly edit that page to take a listen and see what they would do (granted, it's not an expected source dealing with the show). If you can make any headway there, by all means add it. Otherwise, not sure what else could be done. Hope this helps. WAVY 10 17:44, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Adminship

Hi there! A welcome surprise to have received your message; it's certainly been a while since we last corresponded together. I've have however been seeing that you're still very active on the Missing Articles project, which is still on my watchlist. I should get back there some time, I found the article translation very rewarding. I'd like to thank you for your offer to nominate me for adminship, it's definitely appreciated. At this point in time, I'm not seeking to become an administrator, though I keep open the possibility of it for the future. So at this moment at least, I will respectfully decline your offer, with thanks. Maybe in the not so distant future...?

Have a great day. — BillC talk 00:37, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Cats and Indonesian/Javanese music

I have recently tagged some of these categories for the indonesian project, and am a bit concerned that there is an uncoordiated and disparate nature as to how gamelan, music and java and indonesia seem to have a disjointed and not very coherent category framework... any thoughts on the matter? SatuSuro 01:40, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Follow -up - am still interested - and would appreciate if you are going to create new cats - please could you tag new cats that are specifically Indonesian - with the WP Indonesia class NA on the talk/discussion page - it would be appreciated - thanks SatuSuro 03:21, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Cripes I always expect to see you on during my west australian (gmt 8+) sleep time (aka 11pm- 7am local) its a bit freaky finding you talk at mid-day my time - I'll have to get my world clock map on my widgets to get mentally adjusted. All that aside - the issue was at the time i sent the message it seemed messy and possibly the overal balance and what looked like the orphan status and separateness of the gamelan material from the bigger category of indonesian music in general seems a problem. However the biggest problem with the whole indonesian project is the large number of low populated catgeories - that actually is far more important that we build them u/ populated tem - thats where the serious issue of the cat police from outside wandering in and going for cfd slaughter - aka questioning the capacity of the project to have the resources or the articles to populated them. Sorry to have bothered. It all feels like a lot of work to get things in the project up to scratch, sigh Cheers SatuSuro 03:53, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough - they do gnarl and snarl and growl a bit - and the occasional cfd - but i think for the indonesian project they cannot handle the water (more allusive puns there than I could ever fully explain) - I was trying to herd all orphan cats into the project by tagging them earlier in the year - but still occasionally find the odd one - will probably do a complete check and review later this year of all indonesian articles - once I get the damned parallels software working with a usable version of windoze on my imac - then will be able to work with awb - dreaming dreaming - anyways - i must dig up my gamelan cassettes and digisitze them so i can work on some of the stuff as well - before i think of anything - back to the watchlist - cheers SatuSuro 04:07, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Madrigals and Indonesia

Hey. I am back from Babar island so would like to contribute a little more on the history. Is there a template for writing up the history of a region? I interviewed quite a few people in the Babar Islands this time. How do you handle unwritten oral history from tribal indigenous sources? Like what's politically correct? Was thinking about writing up their experiences under the Imperial Japanese Army's occupation. BTW I checked out your /sandbox and was pleased to see some of my favourite music listed. You say on your talk page (or somewhere) that you think that Indonesia is systemically neglected or something. What do you mean by that? I can contribute in Indonesian (but I have to send it to friends who are mother tongue speakers for grammar checking) for the Indonesian project. If you want to email me my generic pseudonymous email is now theozoic@hotmail.com. Thanks, Theandra Theandra 04:59, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Alternate formulations

Hi there. I made some alternate formulation for Um ar-Rehan at the WP:TDYK page and would deeply appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Tiamat 15:49, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rigadoun. Thanks for the quick response. Yes, the name comes the town's legendary abundance of basil (I believe wild) in years past. I'm not sure what the situation is like today. (I've been to Barta'a but never managed to visit Um ar-Rehan, but if I ever do I will make sure to ask for more information from the villagers. There's sure to be an old woman with some knowledge of that subject there.) Thanks again. Tiamat 16:01, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Missing Music Encycl. Topics

Hi, thanks for the invite - how did I show up on your radar? Most of my recent articles have been on pop music, which isn't a part of that list. I do a bit of work at WP:AR1 on music articles there from time to time. I'm curious to know, how was this list compiled? It is rather gigantic... Chubbles 01:15, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, and the compliment; I hadn't visited the project page in a while. Yes, actually the lists are where I go to get a lot of article ideas (either there or browsing the New Grove, which accomplishes the same thing). I added myself, and removed the inactive cat, since there's nothing inactive about it. Chubbles, the lists were generated by compiling lists of the contents of many major music encyclopedias; e.g. every article in the New Grove should have a link on the list (even the ones that are just redirects). Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 18:59, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Reference templates

Thanks for the heads up. I am aware that there are different templates to use for different situations. And I'd love to use these! But I use a program called NPWatcher and it doesn't have a button for {{unsourced}} or the like. I have already requested that this be added to future versions. For now I've just been using the {{sources}} tag. I will try to remember to use a more appropriate tag, if necessary, by hand. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 04:54, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

gamelan music

Um... I don't know what I'm doing so please be patient! I answered your questions under my talk page. Bisa bahasa indonesia? Have you studied gamelan or do you just like listening to it? -just curious. Under the Palmpedia sight I will have a Bali travel page... of course I'm going to have lots of Palm pictures but I am also going to work in some gamelan music... I want to help out my friends in Munduk. I didn't write down the titles of the pieces so I will have to ask someone. I studied Balinese gamelan for four years and Javanese gamelan for ten but I haven't had a chance to play for about 10 years. I really miss it! Sounds like we have some things in common. I have a lot of different recording... I have some of a Balinese priest "singing" prayers. Anyway, I'm excited that the guy who started Palmpedia asked me to contribute. I'm a photographer and he's seen my pictures of palms.. ha ha that's how I got the "job" I know what you mean by addictive!! I've never attempted to work with ANY type of code before so it's been fun. I actually figured out how to put the gamelan music on my page all by myself. "Cut" and "paste" are my two new best friends! Palmpedia is in its very begining stages... there's a lot to be done. Once I figured out how to do internal and external links I have been working on putting a link where ever possible! So now I'm the "Link Lady." Anyway I just started this project on Saturday... I haven't got much sleep since then!! Well, if you feel like taking on another project and joining another wiki, join us! Palmpedia It would be nice to have an experienced member on the team! We are all stumbling through it blindly. If you do join us, be sure to leave some links for me! Anyway, if you have some time please have a look at what we've done so far! You can go ahead and delete this message if you want after you read it... it's a novel! Thanks!--Enjula 01:23, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rigadoun. Yes, I'm aware of those pages, that's were I got the idea. As for how I make it, I either just happen to find articles in other wikis that don't exist here or I use google to search in one wiki for articles with interwikis to other languages but not to English (example). DYK updating

Thanks for starting the next update (which is now overdue). I noticed that you included three that were related to the United States. I'm not sure if you follow WT:DYK, but there has been a lot of criticism about over-Americanization of DYK, and I wanted to warn you to be cautious about that. (No more than two per country is the usual rule of thumb.) I realize most of the oldest entries are American, which makes it harder, so we may have to use three. Rigadoun (talk) 18:03, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I had noticed that, but had also noticed that nearly all of the soon-to-expire nominations were from the US as well. (If you want the list of nominations I add to Template talk:Did you know, you'll see that almost none of them deal with the US, precisely because I want to keep potential listings as topically and regionally varied as possible.
In putting together the Next Update, I deliberately left space for additional nominations, and would not at all have been surprised or upset if someone had moved a nomination back from the Next Update to the Talk page. DYK selection is a community process, and I simply wanted to have as much as possible started on the Next Update to lessen the work others would need to do. Thanks for the advice! --EncycloPetey 21:27, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Well, I could try, though I've never done it before. However, IvoShando has just reverted my reversion of his removal of the expired noms contested by EncycloPetey, and the current set is therefore too short and lacking an image -- perhaps you'd like to restore the 2 noms and picture, which look ok on a cursory look to me, so that someone with admin privileges can update the main page? I've asked both parties to come to the discussion page, so we shall see. Cheers, Espresso Addict 14:41, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Category:Car rental

Turns out there are two sub categories in there. I'm still moving articles out, when I discovered that we also need Category:Truck rentals. I may include that under car rental for now, but there probably is a better common parent category for both car rental and truck rental. Any ideas? Also boats and aircraft are other vehicles available for rent. Vegaswikian 20:45, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Category:Vehicle rental sounds good. I'll make the parent Category:Vehicles. Vegaswikian 20:48, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Organizations

I didn't remember creating those at all at first. They were not my creation (as far as creative idea that is.), however I did follow some redlinks at WikiProject Organizations. It is their goal to organize things in this manner. I get the sense that things are going slow! I am pretty sure that those categories will, in fact, be filled someday. However, I don't see any harm (or help really) by deleting them for now. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I may look into the situation, and if it can be done, I will work on it. Buster Smith

I noticed you made some comments on a user's page a while back about his edits to Buster Smith. Well, I think I've addressed your concerns. You were right: the text was a direct dump from another source. I found the direct text and used its sources and re-wrote the whole article (pretty much from an infoheavy-wikipoor stub to a stable start class article). I also created the album article for The Legendary Buster Smith, to co-incide with it. I'm pretty happy with it. I don't think there's really much more that could be put in the article. I found some good sources, but I don't think there's a lot that can be expanded upon without going into unnecessary detail. I hope that was what you wanted. --lincalinca 16:44, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I'll bear that in mind if I'm looking for something to do. As it is, I'm trying to work in the project and policy space. I just saw how unsightly this page was, and as I gathered more information, I became more and more interested (I even bought the album on iTunes) and worked my way through the whole article. --lincalinca 22:38, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

I was looking through your contribution history and noticed that you ran for adminship back in April. Are you still interested? From what I can tell you have a stellar contribution record, have learned from your few mistakes, have always been very calm and civil, and no your way around. I'd hate to think that you've been wanting to help out as an admin all this time but simply hadn't been asked yet. --JayHenry 21:28, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

I think that's great! I'm not really part of the popular crowd at RfA, so it might be wise to find a co-nominator. If anyone has offered to nominate you in the past we should ask them if they are still interested. Have you been in any major controversies I should know about? I didn't see any, but admittedly I've not looked through all 13,000 contribs! Also, do you feel comfortable with your knowledge of the relevant policies? If not, I'd want to give you time to read the different pages that are linked at the top of WP:RFA, namely administrators' reading list, how-to guide, and guide to requests for adminship. I'm a bit busy right now, but will be around in about 6 hours to start setting things up. --JayHenry 17:56, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, let's go ahead and wait until Sunday then to start the nom. It's silly, but I've seen people reviewing RFAs get annoyed when their questions are not answered within 24 hours. Xoloz is a very respected editor, and since he's already offered to nominate, I'll ask if he still has the time. --JayHenry 20:19, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

I see you beat me to it. The reason I left the redirect on Édouard Molinaro's page and just added a link to Cristian was because eventhough I've never heard of Édouard (maybe I should look him up), I didn't want to suggest that Cristian (a quite ordinary serie A player at the beginning of his career) was equally notable than an evidently productive filmmaker. Elisabeth Lillström and Elisabeth Olin

Hi Rigadoun! I recently noticed, that there has been an article with the name Elisabeth Lillström, which you have redirected to Elisabeth Olin, as Lillström was her birthname and Olin her married name and the name she was known under. I suppose that earlier article was really about Olin, so it's perfectly correct to redirect it- that's not what this is about. But i saw this as an opportunity to use that old article's name to create a new article- about Olin's mother, Elisabeth Lillström! She was also a famed actor and singer and have an article on Swedish wiki, and i wrote a lot, (though it could probably use some spelling!). I hope that was okay? --85.226.235.164 12:36, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your welcoming-message! I'm glad it was okay; i don't know what the article that you redirected looked like (i didn't start that), but as i saw the name, i got the idea to write the article! I was just a little unsure if it was allowed to start a new article that way. I know they are a lot of Swedish musicians needing an article! I mostly write about historicall people though. If they are any list to add names of people who deserves to have an article here, i wouldn't mind adding some! Again, thank for the welcome! --85.226.235.164 18:25, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

They are about two women who worked as doctor's in the first half of the 19th century; they were given permission to do so, though women whas otherwise barred from this profession; Lovisa Årberg, (born 1803), active as a surgeon in 1820s-1860s, and the famous so called Kisamor (the mother in Kisa), whos real name was Maria Jansson, (1788-1842), who was given a medical license i 1825. Also, were should one put suggestions of articles on alleged witches during the witch-hunt? I am unsure were to put Sofia Lovisa Gråå (born 1749), principal for Dramatens elevskola but never herself an actor, and the murderers Charlotta Ridderbjelke (d.1810) and Sofia Maria Ekwall (1826-1897). I would also like to suggest the Stenborg Theatre, the second theatre in Stockholm in the 18th century. I'm sorry that i asked so much! Oh, one smaller thing; iv'e noticed that the name should perhaps be changed in the article of Sara Fredrica Strömstedt-Torsslow. She was called first Sara Strömstedt, and then Sara Torsslow, and she is known in history and in the refeence-books as Sara Torsslow (Fredrica was not used), so it's not necessary to use all names, and perhaps troublesome with the letter "Ö" in English. If you look at Swedish wiki, and in the link-sources, she is listed as Sara Torsslow. I just thougt i should mention it, when i saw it.--85.226.235.164 14:00, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

You're an Admin!

Congratulations! You may now use all the admin tools such as your mop and bucket to make Wikipedia better! -- Cecropia 07:51, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Congrats!! I don't know about you but I was nervous all week. Can't believe I almost forgot to support. And wow, no opposes or neutrals at all! Good luck with the tools. (Don't block me!) --JayHenry 07:54, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

heheh who doesnt - i have been offline for weeks at a time with both the darkside (pc) and the other (imac) at very slack tech locations - just jump in every now and then to harass friends :)

Trust it all goes well - cheers SatuSuro 05:37, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations! Your overwhelming success is a credit to your natural talents and impressive record. I know you will excel every expectation. Best wishes, Xoloz 14:28, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
I probably shouldn't have been worried, but RFA can be an unpredictable environment. I had never nominated before so I was quite nervous that I was going to mess something up. The PRODs looked good to me. Did you ever see: Wikipedia:New_admin_school? I'm not sure how good the lessons are, it was only created a month or so ago, but it might be worth checking out. I'll keep you page watchlisted, and if you ever need help with anything let me know! --JayHenry 05:59, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Bears

It is a Himalayan Brown Bear, it should probably be taken out of the red bear article. The guy who added it is an indefinitely blocked user and suspected sock of User:Gorge He. T Rex | talk 12:47, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Interwiki links for crap "articles"

Thank you for linking from Kanendo Watanabe and similar crap articles. (OK, so have me locked up for incivility. But the fact that there are hundreds of the damn things is a major pain in at least one orifice.) It's a valuable service, letting people go from a worthless page to a possibly informative one. But I wonder about links in the opposite direction, such as this. Yes, conceivably they could be useful: a knowledgable reader of the Japanese article could take it upon themself to improve the English one. But I think that this is unlikely. I recommend avoiding links to "articles" that are of little or no value -- though I can't quote you any guideline (let alone policy) that would back me up here, and though I know that somebody's bot will probably do the dirty deed anyway.

No need to reply, but if you want to do so please do here rather than on my talk page (I hate pingpong discussions). -- Hoary (talk) 06:38, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Josef Friedrich Anton Fleischmann

Hi. I see you have just changed Johann to Josef. However Grove gives Johann. Why did you put Josef? In fact I have asked an admin to change it to Friedrich Fleischmann - which is apparently the usual short form - and the one the German version uses. Best. -- Kleinzach (talk) 04:25, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Maybe all those links on the German page were to try to establish his name, but if he actually used Friedrich that would effectively remove the problem, and we could note Josef as a possible name in the text. I'll do that - let me know if you see any problem.
I've already asked Adam Cuerden to move the page to Friedrich Fleischmann, though as you are also an admin, perhaps I might ask you if Adam doesn't get round to it?
Thank you also for your kind words! I've been more active here than I ever intended, the Opera Project has been a very active little corner of WP. However I've never had any ambitions to move up in the organization. I'm probably too controversial anyway for trying to develop guidelines at the project level rather than working on WP global policies. -- Kleinzach (talk) 08:06, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Grove has "(Johann) Friedrich (Anton) Fleischmann' and it may well be that Fleischmann wasn't always consistent in what he called himself. Maybe it's OK as it is now? Let me know if you still think there are any anomalies. Best. -- Kleinzach (talk) 03:26, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

"Based on"

Hello Rigadoun, your query raises a puzzle for which I would welcome your input.

I'm sure we agree that editing without a reference source is a terrible idea, and articles should have lots and lots of in-line references to indicate where all the material came from.

But what if all the material comes from one single reference source? In such a case, I could, in principle, add a footnote to every sentence, which would cite the very same source. But this seems a little bit inelegant and reader-unfriendly to me. I felt it better simply to declare, once and for all, that everything in the article came from the same source. Yours sincerely, Opus33 (talk) 01:15, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, Rigadoun. On reflecting, I think it's probably best just to footnote everything, all the time--even if it looks a bit awkward. This prepares the article for the addition of future references from other sources.
The article you pointed out in your first message is now a multiple-reference article and is fully footnoted, so I think I've fixed the problem you observed. Yours truly, Opus33 (talk) 17:59, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Barí language prod

When you removed the prod on Barí language did you notice that the only source was the anecdotal memory of the creator of a question he asked another person several years ago. And that he admitted he may have the spelling wrong. Do personal, uncrecorded interviews, really count as sources? Thanks Mbisanz (talk) 21:57, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Ok, looks like ther eis a source at a reputable site. Forget my comment. Mbisanz (talk) 23:16, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for supporting my RFA

<font=3> Thanks for your support, my request for adminship passed 62/0/0 yesterday!

I want to thank Snowolf and Dincher for nominating me, those who updated the RfA tally, and everyone for their support and many kind words. I will do my best to use the new tools carefully and responsibly (and since you are reading this, I haven't yet deleted your talk page by accident!). Please let me know if there is anything I can do to be of assistance, and keep an eye out for a little green fish with a mop on the road to an even better encyclopedia.

Thanks again and take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:34, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

rhino request

Hey Rigadoun! How's the admin life treating you? If you're not too busy deleting bad pages, I'd love to have your help with an article I've been working on. I just finished doing a lot of research on Sumatran Rhinoceros. Since you're in WikiProject Indonesia I'd love it if you could take a look in the article and see if I've made any obvious mistakes, or if there are sections that are unclear, etc. A fresh set of eyes would be greatly appreciated! (I've been reading about these rhinos so long that I'm going a little crazy.) --JayHenry (talk) 08:00, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

After your question about the Hamburg Zoo I got a bit carried away... The weird thing is that even after all that research I'm not 100 percent sure it's the same as the Zoological Society of Hamburg, so I haven't added a wikilink yet. I'm submitting it for DYK :) Thanks for your helpful comments at the review. I've addressed most of them and left a few follow up questions on the rest. Thanks! --JayHenry (talk) 07:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
