August 2012 edit

I imagine you realize it's not okay to put profanity in the music genre section, like you did at Nickelback, but I'm letting you know anyways. Please stop, or you're likely to get blocked. Thanks. Sergecross73 msg me 00:36, 31 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Any thoughts on what has been said at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Sergecross73#Sup ? Seems pretty clear you you have indeed vandalized the page with profanity... Sergecross73 msg me 03:01, 5 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Stop wasting our time with this nonsense. It's undeniable with edits like this that your account is vandalizing the Nickelback page. If your account doesn't stop making edits like that, its going to be blocked, regardless of "who" is making the edits. (Hint: It's not Salvidrim.) Your recent edits edit

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button   or   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 18:06, 5 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for either being a troll, or a compromised account. See contribs.. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Request reason:

After receiving the first message, I did not make one more profain edit on an actual, "mainstream," per se, page. I think generalizing me as a "troll" and banning me for a conversation with a higher person in which I am trying to plead my case is hasty and unfair. As you are able to see, I usually make legitimate edits, and I intend on continuing to do so in the future. Thank you. RickWilliams75 (talk) 22:08, 5 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

I'd like to emphasize that we're talking about Nickelback here. Nobody on God's green earth should care about this band being messed with. For freak's sake, the Detroit Lions' fans had a petition made a year ago trying to keep Nickelback from performing at their season opener. Were they banned from Detroit Lions games? No they weren't. Why? It's freedom of speech, baby, yeaahhh. Lighten up, and move on; that's what I like to say. Banning me for one simple, humorous post is like giving Ben Stiller the death penalty for a speeding ticket. RickWilliams75 (talk) 22:03, 6 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

I am declining your unblock request because it does not address the reason for your block, or because it is inadequate for other reasons. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.

Then what do I do to get somebody to give my block an expiration date?RickWilliams75 (talk) 23:15, 7 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the reasons for the block and articulate a path forward that reassures the community that the actions that led to the original block won't be repeated. I don't think that is possible here, based on your input so far. Wikipedia isn't for everyone, it is an encyclopedia after all, not a forum, blog or general purpose information website. You may do better at one of those types of websites, as I fear the corroborative and collegiate environment here is something you don't seem willing to adapt to. Request reason:

I understand that I was blocked for calling Nickelback "shit." I'm sorry for doing so, and I promise that, if you unblock me, I will get back to the beneficial edits that I am used to making. I am not a troll, but at that one moment I admit that I was. I've been a member for a few years now and have made many edits, and I think you should take that into consideration. It's not like I made the account a few days ago just to wreck Nickelback's genre, but I deeply regret doing that to the page. RickWilliams75 (talk) 19:25, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

The idea that you were blocked only for calling Nickelback "shit" is absurd. You have made a number of disruptive edits, not just that one. You have made attacks on other editors. You have exhibited a battleground mentality instead of editing collaboratively. You have persistently claimed that you have not made edits that were plainly made with your account. (If that is not true then you need to explain why we should trust you after such blatant lies, while if it is true then your account must remain blocked as it is a compromised account, and we can't trust it ever again. If you wish to take up Yunshui's very generous offer (below) then you will have to address these issues too. JamesBWatson (talk) 19:58, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rick. I've discussed this with Dennis, and I'd be willing to offer you an unblock on two conditions. Firstly, prior to your original block and the actions leading up to it, many of the "beneficial edits" you had made were indicative of genre warring. If you are unblocked, I would expect you to avoid making edits to genre classifications in music articles for at least three months; you can use this time to demonstrate collaborative editing elsewhere on the project, where your opinions may be less heated. This will hopefully help you to get a better idea of Wikipedia policies and consensus-based editing. Secondly, your unblock would be conditional upon you finding an appropriate mentor and working with them to improve your editing. A list of mentors who may be willing to adopt you can be found here; if you find one or two you like the look of, please leave a message here and I will alert them for you.

The unstated third condition is of course that you refrain from personal attacks (directed or nebulous, in edit summaries or anywhere else) and vandalism, but that, I hope, will not be a problem for you again. If you agree to these conditions, please leave a message below. Yunshui  14:14, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Yunshui. I'd like to take you up on that offer. I'll stay away from the genres and get a mentor. Thanks. RickWilliams75 (talk) 01:53, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps you could expand on that by explaining more on how you will move forward, and addressing JamesBWatson's concerns as well. Getting unblocked is a little more complicated than just signing on the dotted line, it does require that the admins believe you understand the issues, not just willing to say you will be a good guy from now on. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 03:45, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have placed an {{adoptme}} template on your userpage to alert potential mentors; if there are any specifically that you would like to contact I am willing to get in touch with them on your behalf. You should, as Dennis says, address the issues raised by JamesBWatson above: convince (don't merely tell) us that you will not cause future disruption. To make it easy, here are the questions that need answering in one easy-to-respond-to chunk:
Response: Of course I stand by my claims. RickWilliams75 (talk) 21:44, 15 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • If you now admit to making the edits (which it appears, from your unblock request above, that you do), what guarantees can you offer that you will not lie about your editing in future?
Response: Well, I plan on not making profain, "troll" edits in the future, so I shouldn't be in the same position. RickWilliams75 (talk) 21:44, 15 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Now that you have accepted the temporary topic ban on music genres, what areas to you intend to edit in the future?
Response: Correcting mistakes, updating bands' new music and what-not, adding to summaries, etc. RickWilliams75 (talk) 21:44, 15 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm not trying to force you to jump through hoops here, but I'll be sticking my neck out by unblocking you, so I'd like to see the above issues addressed. You should also note that I will not be unblocking you until you actually have a mentor, not merely on your say-so that you'll get one. Your email is not blocked, so if you would like to contact a potential mentor directly, you can do so by going to their userpage and clicking the "Email this user" link on the left hand side of the page. Yunshui  07:43, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, now I'm confused. In your first answer above, you continue to claim that you didn't make disruptive and profane edits to the Nickelback page ("I have not one time messed with the Nickelback page in any way") and that you were framed for said edits by Salvidrim ("He made it himself using my profile name just to make it look like I have been tampering"), yet in your unblock request higher on the page you admit to the edits, and in your second answer immediately above you give assurances that you won't make such edits again. Either you didn't read the thread I linked to or you are being somewhat disingenuous. I ask again: do you continue to claim that Salvidrim somehow vandalised the Nickelback page using your account, and that you did not make those edits? Yunshui  08:09, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah? I already admitted that I was trolling that guy. How many times to I have to come out about that? Jeez. That all happened before you linked me anything anyway. And for the record so you're not confused for some odd reason anymore, Salvidrim did not take over my account. It was ME who messed with the page. Anybody could figure that out. Again, I was trolling them by denying it, or at least attempting to do so. I didn't think that would make them so gigantically enraged toward me that they would take the convo to the head hanchos of wikipedia though. I thought they had better things to do in their day; I don't, but I thought they did. RickWilliams75 (talk) 21:21, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
The tone of your above comment is not exactly reassuring, and I would also like to have seen something more concrete than "correcting mistakes, updating bands' new music and what-not..." as your proposed plans for the future. Then again I imagine this process of justification must be somewhat frustrating for you, so a degree of curtness might be expected, and you have at least clarified your position. Okay, the offer stands: get yourself adopted by a mentor and I'll unblock you. Yunshui  06:48, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
What am I supposed to do if I don't have an email? RickWilliams75 (talk) 21:46, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Post the name(s) of the mentor(s) you would like to consider you for adoption here, and I will notify them for you. A full list of potential adopters is here. Yunshui  07:12, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Let's go with Chris the Paleontologist. RickWilliams75 (talk) 02:51, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Chris has graciously agreed to take you on, so I will unblock you after posting this message. I suggest you start by visiting Chris' talkpage and introducing yourself there. I imagine he will have suggestions for areas you might like to edit in to help you get a handle on Wikipedia policies and processes; keep in mind that he's trying to help you out here and follow his advice.

To reiterate and clarify the terms of your unblock:

  • You are entering into a mentorship agreement with User:Chris the Paleontologist. You will be expected to work with him, follow his advice, and turn to him as a first port of call if you have questions. He may assign you various tasks or tests to complete to demonstrate your understanding of Wikipedia. This mentorship agreement is expected to last for a minimum of three months, after that you may continue the arrangement if you and Chris are both in favour of doing so.
  • You are under a voluntary topic ban on music genres for three months, and will not make changes to the genres of bands or musicians during that period.
  • You will abide by Wikipedia's policies on personal attacks and vandalism; in other words, you will do neither.

Failure to abide by these terms allows any administrator to block you indefinitely without prior warning. You will be taken to have broken this agreement if:

  • You persistently fail to follow Chris the Paleontologist's advice or instructions without good explanation.
  • Chris finds it necessary to report you to an administrator or to the administrator's noticeboard.
  • You make any changes to the genre of any band or musician before 26th December 2012.
  • You make any edits that can be indisputably construed as vandalism or personal attacks.

If you are blocked again for violating the terms of your unblock, it is extremely unlikely that you will be unblocked.

I wish you the best for your future as a Wikipedian, and hope that you'll enjoy contributing to the project in the future. If you have any questions or problems and Chris is not available, I'm happy for you to contact me for assistance. All the best, Yunshui  07:55, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
