Jerry Nelson

Thanks for providing categorizations of the Jerry Nelson and SSP articles.

The guidelines for importance ratings say that High includes "All astronomers who won major prizes or awards besides the Nobel Prize." Since Nelson won the Kavli prize for astrophysics, doesn't that put him in this category? The Kavli has been called the "New Nobel" and the "Next Nobel" (though it has a bit of a different focus). The Kavli certainly conveys considerable prestige and fortune (a million dollars). What do the guidelines mean by "major prize" if not the Kavli?

Well, for major prize I usually think in terms of the Nobel or the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. It looks like the Kavli has only recently been founded and I'm still unclear about the level of prestige it denotes. But fine, it can be made a high. That'll put him in the same group as Nicolaus Copernicus, John Herschel, Fred Hoyle and Johannes Kepler. :-)

I also think the Nelson article deserves better than a Start rating. It is certainly well sourced and verifiable, and it contains a decent amount of information on Nelson's life and work. It earned a DYK on the Wikipedia front page. Other available biographies have no more information about him. A biography of a living person cannot delve too deep into private life, and it would not be appropriate to do original research into his life. I think at least a B Class would be reasonable. If there is anything keeping it from going all the way to GA, I'd like to know what that is in order to address the problems. --RichardMathews (talk) 22:35, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

It just looked like a start to me. The citations are unformatted and the article is fairly brief. For some sample B articles on astronomers, see John Couch Adams, George Biddell Airy and Fred Hoyle.

The relevant guidelines are at WP:COI, they discourage editors from directly editing the article, and encourage instead making suggestions at the article talkpage. Thanks, Joseph. It is because I am aware of WP:COI that I took the precaution of submitting this through AfC rather than just creating it myself. It's good to have an extra pair of eyes to make sure I am treating the subject fairly.

I do feel that this should be well above Start-Class. It thoroughly covers all of the material available in all reliable sources. I think I write pretty well. This could be B-Class, and I could see it not taking much to take this to GA. I have submitted to Project U.S. for assessment.
