Standardized test

As an expert, can you help improve this page? It's full of uncited material that may not be true. Thank you! Chris53516 16:25, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Chris53516, I wouldn't say I'm an "expect." I'm more like a "recovering former user."

I like what you've been doing to that group of articles. I'll pitch in here and there if I think of a good reference, etc. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 16:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

From the archive, you said: "My doctorate is in Educational Leadership with a specialty in educational evaluation. I've worked in the field for the past 20+ years."[1] (emphasis added). If you're not an expert, I don't know what one is. Chris53516 16:53, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
After working under real testing and measurement experts, I know I'm not one - too esoteric for me! But like I said, I'll help out where I can see some value to be added.

Userbox

I just made another userbox: {{User:UBX/No trade with animals}} before noticing you moved the other boxes. Feel free to move this as well. Since you appear to be interested in education as well I'd appreciate your comment on some ideas I wrote down. --Fasten 18:07, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I've moved the box. As far as some ideas go, they might be adding up to "quite a few"!

Do you have anything specific in mind what you're looking for? Rfrisbietalk 18:56, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looking for? - You mean any particular question to you concerning my text? One question could be: Is promoting a theory of mind in pupils and educating pupils to be pedagogues as a means of socialization a topic that deserves further attention (in detail) or is this, for some reason, intentionally not a part of formal education? --Fasten 16:27, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, like that. I'm really not well-versed on the subject, but Howard Gardner's Theory of multiple intelligences might relate in some way to theory of mind. Project Zero is one approach to addressing such issues through formal education, usually in alternative and/or magnet schools. I hope this helps. Rfrisbietalk 16:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question?

Excuse me, but what have you done to my userpage? This really wierd thing has popped since you edited my page and I don't like it. Please fix it. loulou 20:46, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi loulou, it was just a coincidence that I updated your "caring cat" box about the same time an admin deleted your "pre-teen" box and left the "really weird thing" in its place. I put a comment around the problem so you can see where it is. You might want to just delete that line. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 20:55, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry

Sorry about the accusation. I just didn't see the Admin on my page history. Do you know why they deleted the preteen box? loulou 21:05, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's fine, it was an honest mistake.

The admin's action didn't show up on your talk page. You have to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:User_pre-teen and here [2] to see what happened. Not the easiest thing to follow, is it? Rfrisbietalk 21:13, 3 August 2006 (UTC) Just changed the wikilink to full URL to prevent your talk page from showing on What links here of deleted template.--Andeh 22:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mistake

Sorry about reverting your addition of a cat to Bhajan. However, may I point out that technically Bhajan is a Hindi term whereas Bhajana is the Sanskrit term. The meaning in each language is also slightly different. In Sanskrit it means worshipping God in general while in Hindi it is more specific, chanting/praising to God with a religious song. But I guess it is alright to have the cat because Bhajan is still derived from Sanskrit. GizzaChat © 13:34, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not a Sanskrit scholar, so I only can go by what I've read here and there. English translations and spellings of Eastern words don't help much either, especially since so many Hindi and Urdu (?) words are derived from Sanskrit. Personally, I find the "a" present or absent at the end of many words, e.g., yog/yoga, to be so close in meaning, I almost always think of them as the same thing. As far of different meanings, I think of them like English words with subtle but different variations. Maybe you could add the spelling distinctions and meanings to the introductory paragraph of Bhajan. I've seen similar notes in other articles where this type of modern language derivation from Sanskrit applies. Thanks again. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 13:49, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bastique, Are you interested in moving this template to your userspace? I'm going to nominate Wikipedia:Userboxes/Pets for deletion. Rfrisbietalk 03:09, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

While I'd certainly rather have the Userbox in my userspace rather than see it deleted, I'm completely befuddled as to the intent. Rule number one of WP:GUS clearly states If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In other words, there has never been a controversy regarding the nature of one's pets, why in the world is there a need to Userfy them? As an admin who has been privy to userbox conversations both on site and off, I've never heard of any issue with the pet userboxes. Why cause problems where there are none? Bastiqueparler voir 16:21, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Personally, I was opposed to the eviction of userboxes from template space altogether. However, that's not how things have played out. What I see from Wikipedia:Userboxes/Userbox location straw poll is an emerging consensus that, "What's good for the goose, is good for the gander." Interest userboxes generally are not seen as "hard-core" encyclopedic topics. Of the thousands of links I've redirected, very few users have objected. You have been one of the most notable exceptions. By putting Wikipedia:Userboxes/Pets up for deletion, we'll have a chance to see where the community stands at this point, particular since other pages already have been deleted. Rfrisbietalk 16:31, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Userbox Bypassing

In the future DO NOT change anything on my main page. It is NOT Rfrisbie's Userspace, It is MINE! I take it as a violation, and do consider it vandalism! You shouldn't be doing it on my page, or anyone else's!

Please see this regarding editing other users userpages.

That being said (calming down) if you feel I need to change something, ask me first before barging into my house and rearranging my furniture.

I do understand there is some crazy little controversy regarding Userboxes, and German Userboxes. However, I don't quite understand what the whole thing is about frankly, despite what this says.  — [Unsigned comment added by Z-vap (talkcontribs).]

And to quote from User_pages#Ownership_and_editing_of_pages_in_the_user_space

As a tradition, Wikipedia offers wide latitude to users to manage their user space as they see fit. However, pages in user space still do belong to the community. (emphasis added)

I'm sorry you object to the userbox migration, but it is what it is. If I need to edit other userpages to move things forward, so be it. Rfrisbietalk 17:14, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Religion

While, in general, I am AGAINST the GUS, I also concede the point about religion (and controversial politics, for that matter), as per Wikipedia:Jimbo on Userboxes. As such, to hopefully settle things down, and stop the continuing of moving/deletion of topical preference userboxes, I've been working on emptying Wikipedia:Userboxes/Religion. Religion only has 3 left, then we "could" nominate it for deletion. I've tagged all three for userification. - Jc37 09:38, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I moved the boxes. I'll redirect the links later. Rfrisbietalk 11:33, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's why Cyde is so willing. Xaosflux hosts the sexuality directory and started Category talk:Wikipedia GUS userboxes. I'll ask Cyde first, after I do the redirects. It might be gone by then anyway. Thanks for working on this!

Some help for a newbie?

Hi! Came across you after you edited my userboxes section. I was wondering if you could clarify an issue for me:

I am interested in other cultures and religions, so I put a couple of "This user is interested in..." type userboxes relating to religion on my userpage.

And now I'm apparently Jewish and a Unitarian Universalist, despite being an agnostic (of little to no Jewish descent, either, from what I can tell). Yeah.

Now, I have been perplexed by the take/policy on userboxes and userspace and whatever before, on Wikipedia. But this just takes the cake. Why should a userbox that LITERALLY says "Interested in" put you in the category of "belonging to" a religion? Why does it do that? What's going on? What's the meaning of life? (Sorry, got caught up in the moment. But seriously... what's going on with those things?)

  • Because it can, because it said so, a lot of commotion, 43...but seriously, some userboxes have a category embedded in them. Some template pages show you when you look at them outright, others you have to "edit" to see the category. Take a look at User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes/Religion. You'll see some "Is a bla bla bla" and some "Is interested in bla bla bla." Anything I "userfied," I just moved as is. If you happen to pick an "Is interested in" box the puts you into an "Is a" category, let me know and I'll fix it. Rfrisbietalk 16:45, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I realize that apparently, the "belonging to" religion userboxes were changed because it was seen as POV (I'm of the opinion that members of a religion would know more about it than outsiders in a lot of cases, and that it should be allowed under the same policy that allows userboxes that proclaim a profession or degree of expertize or fluency level in a particular language, but hey, what do I know?). I still am absolutely dumbfounded, however, to discover they were changed to "Interested in". There is a HUGE difference between being "interested in" something and actually BELONGING to it.

Anyway, is there any way to fix this? I don't want people asking me about religions I know very little about, but I do want to state an interest in them on my userpage. What's going on? :\

On another note, I've been working a lot on the fan fiction article lately (to the point where I had a semi-nightmare last night about anon users messing up the pages I'd worked so hard on, heh), and it grew into such a monstrously huge article that we've seperated a couple of sections out into other articles, one of which is Fan fiction terminology.

Would it have been better to title the page Glossary of fan fiction terms? Should I create a redirect under that, maybe, so that somebody doesn't create a second redundant article or something?

Also: I found out that Raisinets redirects to Chocolate-coated raisin, despite the fact that it's a well-known registered trademark for a particular BRAND of chocolate-coated raisin. I have no idea how to fix this. :\ There's enough info in chocolate-coated raisin for a stub on Raisinets, but what do I do about the redirect?

Signed, a Newbie. [ Runa27 15:50, 8 August 2006 (UTC) ]Reply

Userboxes

Could you tell me how to create userboxes?--KojiDude 06:15, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi KojiDude, take a look at Designing a userbox for the basics. You also can just pick a box you like for the design and then just adapt the code to make your new box. Because of WP:GUS, probably the best place to put any boxes you make is something like "User:KojiDude/Userbox/Boxname". You can post your boxes at User:GRBerry/Userbox migration. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck! Rfrisbietalk 11:46, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP:UBX talk pages

Hey, I was just thinking, (bad idea, I know ) and I wondering if you'd be interested in moving some of the orphaned userbox directory pages (like Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/Religion) to the talk pages of your userbox directories. I'm very surprised they were still there...and it worked! List of Userboxes

I found that list, but since it was so old, I decided to make a new one... manually... (I should have mentioned this to someone before, so that they could talk me out of it : )

Sooo, several hours of typing/pasting/etc later...

They aren't a "huge" mess... but some observations:

  • 1.) We should have a better or clearer naming convention, or something.
    • There is no standard to capitalising the first word after "User " (it's about 50% lower/upper case). This also means that there are many hundreds of userboxes that are listed twice, once with an uppercase second word, and once with the lower case second word (though more than a few are redirects).
    • several userboxes have a dash (-) or NO space between "User" and the first word.
    • greek, russian, etc. letters in the name.
    • the use of punctuation, such as "/" "," "..." etc.
  • 2.) Several appear to be attempts to make userified templates. I'll work on moving those to each user's userspace.
  • 3.) Many (very many) religion/politics ones are "back" in template space, it would appear that they just apparently "accidentally" haven't been added to the Userboxes sub-pages.
  • 4.) there are more userbox redirects than the number of userboxes on a single subpage : )
  • 5.) Oh, quantity of userboxes = 10027 (though that includes redirects, and 118 templates that have "user" as the initial word (though some of those have "userbox" as the first word). So it's roughly 10 thousand userboxes in template space. ouch.

Can I run away screaming now? : )

- Jc37 13:00, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is that all ya got?!

But seriously, Jc37...what are you, RoboJc37?!!! That's such a great job!!! Why don't you post it at Wikipedia talk:Userboxes or some place like that? Some questions/comments. Where did you put the list? I doubt such a "non-sanctioned" group of pages ever will have tight naming conventions, especially in userspace. I expect the best we'll have is some related boxes will use a given convention. Some folks even made proper nouns lower case to force a convention. Hmmm? Different capitalizations of the same word often mean "competing" box styles, or just variations. The (-) and "no" in names usually means "against." Make sure you check with someone to get their okay before you move a box into their userspace. If they support the idea but don't want the box in their space, go ahead and use User:Rfrisbie/Userbox/Blablabla. If the religion box resurrection is deliberate, the Category:Wikipedia GUS userboxes should eventually catch up to it. Ditto for redirects. See Category talk:Wikipedia GUS userboxes/Completed. Apparently, we don't have enough userboxes yet! Okay, running and screaming now authorized...scissors optional! Rfrisbietalk 13:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I think that sort of thing is fine for "themed" userboxes, but I think the "messy" ones are fine too. I've made some comments about that at User talk:Lady Aleena/Userboxes/Allies. Rfrisbietalk 14:46, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
well. I totally did not understand that response at all : )
could you clarify what you're talking about?
I also checked that link, and still didn't understand.
(as a help, try defining "that sort of thing".)
- Jc37 14:51, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
e.g., naming conventions, parameters, meta:ParserFunctions, and anything else intended to "wikify" userboxes. I just think they'll always be "messy" because that's their true nature. :-) Rfrisbietalk 14:57, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I meant "wikify" as to mean that I added brackets and the word "template:" to what I had listed, so that you could click on them : p
As for "messy"... If that was true, why the attempt to add the word : "User" at the start? Sounds like a naming convention to me : )
That said, I wasn't condemning the examples, merely showing examples, to see what others thought : )

And as for adding the list somewhere... should I try? it's over 10k names. Is that too long of a page? I also don't want to be the cause of another controversy, if you understand. Detailed thoughts on this would be appreciated. : ) - Jc37 15:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I guess we're just talking about "degrees" of naming conventions. "Template:User..." is pretty clear in templatespace. Some have tried other, more specific conventions, with varying degree of success. Wikipedia:List of userboxes has 953 names (112 Kb). That's over a ten-fold expansion!

I guess that sounds a bit too large for a wikipage. Since it's not an automated list, my main concerns are how would you (or anyone) keep it up-to-date, and how would it help to manage the userboxes if it isn't accurate (realtively speaking)? Is the effort worth the cost? For now, I'd just keep it on your own and decide how useful it is to you before you add it here somewhere. Rfrisbietalk 15:24, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Speaking of said controversy... I've been re-reading "some" (it's quite voluminous) of the information about the previous "war" (since I apaprently missed it). This link is is to a comment that apparently started it all. (Well, a specific admin's actions based on interpretation of that comment, actually.) I thought you might find it a useful read. mail] - Jc37 15:30, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that looks vaguely familiar. Have you seen Wikipedia:Jimbo on Userboxes and Category:Wikipedia userbox discussions? I missed the first wave or so myself. I started getting into it around May, then got into WP:GUS when Jimbo basically suggested that was the way to go.
May 27, 2006 The middle ground is to let people do as they will in the user space, and merely use reason and argument to teach people over time why one ought not use Wikipedia userpages for political or other campaigns.... while at the same time saying, no, really, the template namespace is not for that, that we do not endorse this behavior. This is the solution that the Germans have put into effect with great results.
It seems to have calmed things down quite a bit. Rfrisbietalk 15:56, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Part of my point/concern is that SO many people are quoting WP:GUS as the reason for moving the userboxes, when it states clearly at the top of that page that it's not a policy. And that the apparent concerns were "controversial" userboxes and advocacies, not ALL userboxes. Even the admin I metioned above wasn't attempting that.

So now that the discussion on pets is closed, and even though it was "no concensus", the automatic reaction was to userfy? I thought no concensus meant to "leave it alone"? - Jc37 16:26, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just in the sense of "don't delete throught that process." WP:GUS is it's own "process". I'm already in the middle of more "userfying/ GUSifying"!

Rfrisbietalk 16:33, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

By the way, two more points to keep in mind...the fact that very little active opposition to userfying takes place any more and the Userbox location straw poll suggest an emerging consensus that GUS applies well beyond controversial boxes. For example, no one really said, "Bring those pets back to templatespace! Now!" Rfrisbietalk
There is very little comment at all.. note the difference between the hundreds back in January, and the dozen now. Not to mention that "pets" was a rather minor category. In re-reading the comments, I would differ with the statement that no one was interested in userboxes staying in template space. It was just that this was "pets". - Jc37 19:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Things are slowing down, but more will move. I'm moving zodiac boxes because they're related to religion and beliefs. I don't have any particular moving plans after that. I know Cyde wants media boxes out. I haven't noticed any big pushes on anything in particular lately. Rfrisbietalk 19:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Border

Do you have some automatic thing that adjusts the border on your user page/talk page? - Jc37 14:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, it's called snoop, steal, copy, paste, type, type, type...

Do you have something in mind? Rfrisbietalk 14:41, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

lol, oh ok, it's just your timing was such that after every time I posted here, I would look at my watchlist, and would see "border" : ) - Jc37 14:51, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Userfied Pets

Hi,

That was fast! :) To what new location did they go, out of curiosity? On the principle of two heads being better than one, I won't do the speedy myself, but I'm sure an admin who wants the page gone (eg. User:Cyde), will gladly do it for you, and may have already. Best wishes, Xoloz 16:18, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

That was just a courtesy call - giving you the first right of refusal.

My boxes go to User:Rfrisbie/Userbox. The pets are linked at User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes/Pets. I usually ask Cyde or Xaosflux to delete stuff. I'm in the middle of WP:AWBing them right now, except for Template:User Siamese owner which Bastique seems to "own." I left him a message. Rfrisbietalk 16:30, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Userboxes/Pets

Would this be a candidate to move to someones WP:GUS area, it has a lot of history, and a talk page. — xaosflux Talk 19:05, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

NM, found it in your userspace, I've migrated the history to your pages history. — xaosflux Talk 19:11, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
