OCC and panel sales

LOL, OCC just removed my comment that the first week sales for Oasis:Be Here Now included panel sales from the bottom of their news article on 25. The whole article reads like an apology to Adele fans for the fact that they've chosen to go for a previously abandoned sales figure, but 'it's OK 'cos there's lots of other records out there to break!' Last time I looked. The really funny thing is, the article in Music Business Worldwide was changed after I (and probably many others) quoted it, from saying that it was panel sales to: "However, Official Charts Company data experts have now told MBW that ‘panel sales’ were not part of Be Here Now’s sales, as the practice had died out by the time the LP arrived in August 1997." Don't know what info you have from that era? Not quite sure how they got a figure of 763,000 and a figure of 813,000 for the same 7 days. Then today, they announced that 25 has sold a million and that BHN didn't (as previously stated) do this in 11 days but rather 17! Actually I just had a good laugh looking at the OCC's list of top Christmas songs – Alexandra Burke's version of "Hallelujah" at no. 5, well I never realised that it was a "Christmas" song... Colombian film

Hi Richard, I've come across a book by McKee Irwin and Castro Ricalde that has a chapter on the early history of Colombian cinema, with lots of names of films, cast and crew. If I were to create some articles and stubs, would you be able to come up with supporting material from libraries, etc near you for expansion of the same? I've already done one for Alla en el trapiche as an example.

Underworld

It's fine, I understand, it's just that I thought at the time "they're not going to like this, I must change it" but I can understand it now, I won't change anything again. However, to me, the band and virtually every other Underworld fan besides myself, dubnobasswithmyheadman is their debut album and can't be regarded as otherwise as they really are two completely separate bands. Depending on whether you really do like them or are just saying that to calm me down you will or will not also feel this way. I can easily find another source besides their website stating that the album was their debut and the other band just happened to have the same name (it wasn't the "second version", there has always been only one Underworld, if you know what I mean) Anyway have a nice evening! @Underworldfan97: I know, I view it as their debut too! ;-) But what you, I or the band "think" is irrelevant, the fact is that it is their third album (albeit with a different line-up) and Wikipedia isn't about what anybody thinks, it's about facts. Any discography book, such as Martin C. Strong's, would not have two separate entries for the two versions for the band. You yourself have just said there has only been one Underworld – therefore logically the first two albums must also be by the same band and dubnobasswithmyheadman must be the third. It isn't Wikipedia's job to appease artists by removing facts that they may not agree with. And believe me, it's one of my top five favourite albums of the 1990s, but as a Wikipedia editor I have to be objective and not let my opinions affect my editing. I know, it's fine :-) When I said about there only being one Underworld, I meant in the same way Hyde and Smith mean it, that it is like the original band named Underworld and the two albums by them never existed in the first place. BPI Awards

Oh look - BPI have quietly added back-dated certifications for old albums! Suddenly Queen Greatest Hits is 20X Platinum and Bridge Over Troubled Water 10X. I wonder if they have started at the top and are working their way down because it feels very selective at the moment: I can't honestly believe that Sgt Pepper sold 17X Platinum and no other Beatles album sold more than 2X (apart from "1"). Hello Btljs - been off Wiki for a couple of months due to work, moving house, etc. That's very interesting, and I agree, entirely selective – sounds like they wanted to update the top 20 or top 40 best-sellers of all-time for some reason (new updated list coming out?). I'd be surprised if any of the Beatles' studio albums has sold less than 1 million in the UK... I mean, they were number one for 51 out of 52 weeks from May 1963 to April 1964, they surely weren't going to do that on just 600,000 combined sales in an entire calendar year at the height of Beatlemania. I completely disagree that you think that "Love Me Like You" shouldn't have passed because you think some sources are "reliable". Can I ask if you edit music articles? Perhaps I was a little over the top in my blanket condemnation for which I apologise – most of the sources you quote are not the ones I have concerns about, apart from perhaps Idolator, which is a blog and I don't know how official the writers are... it was more the likes of Hollywood Life and the review from Press Play OK which concerned me. @Calvin999:Yeah, you've obviously seen my polite query on MaranoFan's talk page as to why the Daily Mail isn't a reliable source in his opinion - I'm not going to get involved in that argument. If you look at the edit history of various Little Mix articles you'll see I've been quite active, but mostly in reverting unsourced sales figures and other content by annoying IPs - I think that's something you would agree with me on, so I think we're actually on the same page here. I tend to try and improve music articles from the past rather than current artists (see the list on my user page) because the likes of you and IndianBio are doing fine work on the pop music articles, no need for me to get involved there. :-) Richard3120 (talk) 22:51, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Portuguese peaks

@Eurohunter: exactly – the Portuguese charts from acharts are not official and therefore shouldn't be used. The charts on portuguesecharts.com are copies of the official ones compiled by AC Nielsen and are for digital singles sales only, but they only started in January this year. Hey Richard, I see you like hiking and live in Bogotá. Have you been to Chingaza and the other parks? Suesca? I have been to San Gil, not to the others yet. Will work on those a bit on the side of the Muisca project and the goal is to get the Muisca people at least up to a GA using the template of the great civilizations of the Americas. Ha ha, well my mother's side of the family are from Pasto, I lived in Pereira for 18 months when I first moved to Colombia, and now I'm in Bogota... not sure whether that makes me a pastuso, a paisa or a rolo. :-) I would love to visit Chingaza and the rest – my dream is to do a week-long hike around Los Nevados or El Cocuy. Sadly my girlfriend considers walking up Monserrate to be the equivalent of running a marathon, so I'm still waiting. With the current weather in Bogota I'm not exactly desperate to be outside, hence a lot of time spent on Wikipedia in the last couple of weeks...

RE: Template:Football stadiums in Colombia

Well, according to Help:A quick guide to templates, a template is "a Wikipedia page created to be included in other pages and usually contain repetitive material that might need to show up on any number of articles or pages". You have not understood the purpose of this template I made. This template is used in these articles:

• List of association football stadiums by country
• List of football stadiums in Colombia
• List of stadiums in South America

This won't be used in any of the articles of the stadiums it names, because the purpose of the template is to keep updated the list of stadiums in Colombia and with it the three articles I mentioned will have the information updated. --Brayan Jaimes (talk) 21:05, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I've had a quick look – first, there are FAR too many references breaking up the flow of the text... in a biographical article like this, you shouldn't have a reference after every phrase. You should take out all the references to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube because on Wikipedia it is recommended to avoid self-published sources (WP:SELFPUB), and also Discogs is not considered a reliable source because the data is generated by users, and is therefore not always 100% accurate. I know you need references for the release dates of the albums, but they should come from another source, not Discogs. I also think there are too many references to charts, which should really be more important in the Basshunter discography article. If you remove all those references it might be easier to read and then we can see what needs changing. Richard3120 (talk) 00:17, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

There are different informations from different sources so it isn't possible to cut unecessary references because all of them are needed to proof of sources. I wanted to avoid social mdia references but in fact it is nonsesnse. It is just like use official site. Some references there are interviews so it is part of greater things. There are labels and publisher social media. It is important also to use official social media accounts so there are official accounts only. There are also simple things like year of born his brother, production credits etc. Very simple, so I can't belive it can be problematic. But there is too much detail, a lot of the information you have supplied is not important at all – you don't need to mention the chart positions, sales, certifications for every single, just highlight the significant ones, like "Boten Anna" and "Now You're Gone"... for example, for "Boten Anna" all you need to say is "the single reached number one in Sweden and Denmark, and was a top ten hit across other European countries". Also there is no point in a sentence like "Basshunter use social media like: Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, SoundCloud, VK or YouTube to communicating with fans, sharing and publishing his music and videos"... it isn't important at all, every other music artist uses social media, so there is nothing special about it. The source for his brother is fine, but it isn't important what year his brother was born, it is not relevant to Basshunter and his career. Honestly, I expect that another editor will edit the article considerably.

The problem with using social media, even if it is official, is that it can be biased: it is better to find an impartial source. For now we can use iTunes for release dates, but I would prefer to find the information in Music Week or other sources... I will try and look up release dates when I am in the UK next month. What can be biased in things like production credits? I know there can be biased things generally but no this situation. I made mistake. Source for Facebook is for brother name. Every release it is the first release date so it is hard to found these sources in sites like Music Week or AllMusic. I seen some errors in iTunes because they showing dates which are not possible. I can try with Web Archive. I think it is important to tell about downloads and just some words for story of it because it made him popular. I think I skipped already a lot of details. I don't mean production credits – I mean things like sales figures and biographical details, which you have taken from his record label's website (Extensive Music), so they will be biased because they are trying to promote their artist. Honestly, my personal opinion is that there is far too much detail, and not all of it is important. The article is referenced on every side with 7 independent references and this user gives no specifics, just reverts and places that stupid ugly tag on the page without any ground. Hello Tisquesusa, I'm actually in the UK this month, so I can't watch the Copa America! I had a look at the article and I think the issue the other editor had were that the references were not independent: CVs and descriptions of work experiences are not generally considered independent sources as they are written by the author themselves, and likewise the last three references are to works written by the author – the fact that they are published by the university where he works doesn't make them secondary sources. So the only independent sources would be the interview and the articles from Semana and El Tiempo. Richard3120 (talk) 11:03, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Ahh, well enjoy the Old Continent then! ;-) But that is the whole problem; that user doesn't read or check links. The CV comes from the colciencias site that lists many CVs of scientists; written by that site, not by the scientists themselves. WorldCat also lists works itself, not the writer. And the problem is also the arrogance and lack of specifics. He doesn't care shit about what I write and how the article is set-up. Just going over new articles and tagdumping. Luckily it's now gone. Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 350 articles in just six days. Non-free image use?

Hi, are you able to clarify what you said about adding images of people? I was under the impression that if photographs were uploaded to Flickr or YouTube under a free license, and taken in a public place ("At an event where people are openly taking pictures"), then they're fine for Wikipedia. Hi Neegzistuoja, you are correct, but my worry is that some of the photos were uploaded illegally to Flickr is the first place. For example, the photo you used of Brendan O'Connor was presumably originally found here, and because it comes from an Australian government website and it looks like a posed photo at an official meeting, I thought that perhaps there were copyright issues in play here. I also don't know what the legal status is of pictures taken as stills from videos, such as that of Myf Warhurst – presumably the copyright for the video belongs to Waffle TV, and I honestly don't know whether taking a single video still counts as copyright infringement.

Please don't think I am accusing you of widespread copyright violations – it's obvious the vast majority of the images you have uploaded are public domain and perfectly fine, it was just the status of a few that concerned me. I think I need to ask the question on the talk page of WP:Image use policy to get some clarification on these points, there are some grey areas here. Richard3120 (talk) 19:40, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Keyofgemini, I didn't nominate the article for deletion so I can't remove it, and Wikipedia doesn't work like that – once the AfD tag has been added, it is then discussed at the relevant deletion discussion and a consensus is reached, you can't just remove the tag. The question is not whather the information is accurate or not, it is whether there are enough reliable sources to establish Mr Asher's notability. TLC discography

Thanks for patrolling the TLC discography page. I have it on my watchlist too, due to the frequent vandalism, even though I don't particularly care for the group. @Nqr9: personally I quite like the group (CrazySexyCool is a great album), but the main reason I have ended up with that page on my watchlist is a result of the nightmare that is List of best-selling girl groups – I don't know what it is about fans of TLC, Destiny's Child/Beyoncé, Little Mix, Fifth Harmony and the various Japanese and Korean girl groups that causes them to have endless battles about which one has sold more than the other. That article easily gets two or three IPs per DAY making unsubstantiated claims about their particular favourite, and there are at least two page patrollers who appear to be working full-time just to revert all the changes – the page has just been protected yet again, and I'm using the breathing space to push on the talk page for changes to the all-time top ten table, which is the main bone of contention. In contrast, the TLC discography seems to only average about three IP vandals a month – no harm in asking for semi-protection, but I wouldn't be surprised if an admin decides that three vandals a month isn't enough to justify the protection. I found the discography had been greatly overinflated last year and made a lot of corrections to chart peaks and certifications, and they seem to have stabilised since then. JGabbard's Kent Music Report end of year chart positions beyond the top 100

Replying to your comment on my talk page re: JGabbard's Kent Music Report end of year chart placings outside the top 100, citing David Kent's book:

You are correct. His 1970-1992 chart book only contains top 25 charts for each year up to 1992, though his chart was superseded by the ARIA Charts in mid-1988. Therefore, this user's citation is incorrect, and it is bad practice to cite something that you obviously haven't sighted yourself. This user doesn't appear to be a vandal, but is clearly adding this information without citing a valid source. I'm not sure where they got this information from, but I have scans of the Kent Report top 100 charts from that era, and they do not extend beyond the top 100, other than having a list of "singles (or albums) receiving significant sales reports beyond the top 100" - but these are not numbered, and no such lists exist for the annual charts. I would be curious to know where they got this information from - my only guess would be possibly from David Kent directly, but then, unless they referred to screen-shots of correspondence, how can they prove it is accurate? I would be inclined to first ask where they obtained this information from, if not to remove it, as they have not provided a valid source (and it seems they don't even own or have a copy of the book they are citing).Nqr9 (talk) 06:08, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

I asked this user what the source of the Australian peaks they added was, and they said it was from a document based on the book, and that they had no reason to believe the information was inaccurate, as other data from the document matched up with other wikipedia entries. I wrote on their talk page that I have the book, and only an annual top 25 chart appears in it; plus the scans of the Kent Music Report weekly charts I have do not list chart positions beyond #100. I've asked if they can forward me a copy of the document, but haven't yet received a repsonse. I removed the entries they added for 'Here Comes the Rain Again' and 'Straight Up' - the latter wouldn't be correct, anyway, as David Kent's charts were not used by ARIA after mid-June 1988.Nqr9 (talk) 03:07, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

Good evening, I read your message at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of number-one songs of 2018 (Singapore) and while I don't mind if that particular article gets deleted, I was surprised that you mentioned that you have "concerns" about other articles I've created, namely List of number-one songs of 2018 (Colombia). I just wanted to clarify that when I created that article, National Report had not updated their charts since November 2017, which is why I put the Monitor Latino charts. Hello CHUI372 – my concerns about the Colombia article are (1) I always thought that the official national chart in Colombia was the one supplied by National-Report, and (2) whether the Monitor Latino chart was also considered an official one. I know that Monitor Latino themselves are a reputable company and have been supplying the Mexican chart for some years – it's just that if you look at List of number-one songs of 2017 (Colombia) and previous years, they all use the National-Report chart, and I think it would look strange to switch chart providers without any reason. I didn't know that the National-Report chart hadn't updated since November, which seems very odd. Of course, it's perfectly possible that there is more than one accepted chart in the country – the USA had both the Billboard and Cash Box charts for many years, as illustrated in List of Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles of 1980 and List of Cash Box Top 100 number-one singles of 1980. I think maybe we should have two articles titled in the same way, i.e. List of National-Report number-one songs of 2018 (Colombia) and List of Monitor Latino number-one songs of 2018 (Colombia). To be honest, I'm not sure if National Report can be considered an "official" chart either, given that they don't mention any sponsorship from the Colombian government or from a Colombian recording association on their site, nor have their charts been mentioned by the Colombian state media (by contrast, Mexico has at least 2 "official" charts, given that Monitor Latino's charts are covered by Notimex, which is the government news agency, and on the other hand AMPROFON represents the Mexican recording industry and is also a member of IFPI), but I do understand that it's the most popular chart. I don't think there's a need to make multiple articles for one country, I think we can just put both lists on the same article, or if you don't find the Monitor Latino charts to be accurate at all, those can be removed, what's your opinion? --CHUI372 (talk) 08:52, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

@CHUI372: you might be right about National-Report, actually... I think it's become the "official" Colombian chart by default, because it's had no competition since it started in 2009. However, I don't think that means it can be replaced entirely by the Monitor Latino chart – there are many song articles that use the National-Report chart placings over the last eight years, and I think it would be strange if we didn't continue to use it. But I don't have any problem with adding the Monitor Latino chart as well if you want – I won't object to having both charts in the same article, although I foresee that some other editors might complain. But we'll worry about that in the future.

I should point out that I think National-Report also compile charts for Venezuela and Ecuador, so maybe you will have the same issue for Venezuela – that there is both a National-Report and a Monitor Latino chart. Richard3120 (talk) 01:00, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

@Richard3120: I've just added the National Report chart to the article. In fact it seems to be the only chart National-Report has published this year, I can't find the charts for January on their site or on their archive. As for Venezuela, actually I've seen that the chart used for that country on Wikipedia is Record Report. The Wikipedia article states that it's the "official" chart for Venezuela, but again, their website doesn't mention a specific sponsorship from the Venezuelan recording industry, or from the Government, so I'm not sure if their charts are more reliable or "official" than the National-Report or Monitor Latino ones. And just like National-Report, for some reason Record Report has only published one chart so far this year. @CHUI372: Does National-Report have an archive? It's always been a complaint that they only publish the current week's chart, and once it's gone, you can't see charts from previous weeks, so you have to manually archive each week's chart. @Richard3120: I looked at the "Noticias" section of their website, they've published news articles about the February chart, but none for previous weeks of 2018.
