Include File: in Template:Fdw?

Your edit summary in [1] indicates File: should not be included in calls to {{Fdw}} but the documentation example includes it. The documentation for {{Fdw-multi}} also includes File: in examples. {{Fdw}} adds File: to the (non-linked) created section heading and to the file link but not to the section link to Wikipedia:Files for deletion, so it seems at least one of the links will be wrong. I'm not active at images for deletion and don't know what the practice and other templates and instructions say but can you make this more consistent or start a discussion if necessary? Oprah's First Tweet

Hey, there, you said http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oprahsfirsttweet.png "fails WP:NFCC#1 (replaceability) and WP:NFCC#8 (significance)."

First, what would be a replaceable website screenshot of a tweet? Can someone license their tweets under a creative commons license? As for significance, it's Oprah's first tweet, which was a pretty notable tweet and a sign of Twitter's mainstream acceptance.--The lorax (talk) 21:55, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

I've moved the discussion to Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Yes, tweets can be released under free licenses. Oprah's first tweet might be significant if the article discussed Oprah specifically. However, as it is the image is just used to illustrate the "content of tweets", which could easily be illustrated with something else. Repercussions of alt-text handling change

This MediaWiki change seems to have broken some of the stuff documented in Wikipedia:Alternative text for images #Purely decorative images, Wikipedia:Extended image syntax #Alt text and caption, and Wikipedia:Picture tutorial #Links. Was this intended?

Here's the problem. Usage like this:

[[Image:Flag of the United States.svg|22x20px|link=]] [[United States]]

formerly generated an image with no alt text, which caused screen readers to silently bypass the image, as intended (because it's just decoration; all the intended info is also in the text). But now it generates " United States", which contains the unwanted alt text "Flag of the United States.svg", which means a screen reader will say something like "Flag of the United States dot ess vee gee link United States". It was much better the old way, when the screen reader said just "link United States".

A lot of pages rely on the old behavior, through templates such as {{flag}}, and I fear that these pages are now less-accessible to visually impaired readers. Do you know why the change was made? Is there some way we can fix the problem, that's simpler than modifying a ton of templates and articles? Eubulides (talk) 22:02, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Update. I changed the guidance in Wikipedia:Alternative text for images #Purely decorative images so that it recommends marking purely decorative images with "|link=|alt=" instead of the old "|link=". This new advice should be portable to both old and new behavior. But I'm still hoping that we can fix MediaWiki instead of having to change all those templates and articles.
