Question for you

Hi Lostinthebush - I am relatively new to Wikipedia but I recently tried to create an article on Wikipedia on Agnotology which was summarily deleted without as much an explanation. I think this is an increasingly important term in the History of Science area and should be kept.

This action wasn't taken by you but I am asking you this because I went through something similar when I was creating an article on a society created by Lala Lajpat Rai. That time I was given a warning to say the article is likely to be deleted and I managed to scavenge some articles to prove it didn't need to be. I would appreciate it if you could let me know how to go about writing an initial blurb on an article - for sometimes one just knows enough or has only enough time to start an article without citing all the sources - and not have it be deleted peremptorily by some guard. You can leave comments on my talk page - varuag doos

Muttiah Muralitharan

Hello Lost. The bot tagged Murali as WP:INDIA. I am wondering what the criteria is for the bot - did it stamp Muralitharan under India because he was in the Tamils cat? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:26, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lost, I tried the new plug-in support for the India project. It worked well! End of the process, got my bot blocked. :) Please take a look at this discussion and hold-off on running your bot until it is resolved. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:18, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think ANI is a good place to discuss this. Just so you know, I had already posted at WP:COUNCIL and had invited comments. I am in no hurry to get my bot unblocked. I just hope it will get a speedy resolution. Thanks for the help. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 15:16, 27 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ganeshbot

There was a discussion taking place when I blocked it. Several people didn't like its function, and so I blocked it until we could come to a consensus. (I'll admit that I was agreeing somewhat with those who wanted it stopped.) But, anyone can unblock it without telling me. It's just a bot. and it now appears that the consensus is more towards keeping it running. Well, I'm not so sure of that last sentence, looking at the discussion again. Unblock at your own risk! Hi Lost. Yes, help is needed. Do check out the peer review. Also please see if some gross mistake/wrong information is there. People from Delhi would be best to judge. I still have doubts on the "Culture" section. It should be more condensed. But it is difficult to decide how to condense/ what to remove etc.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:04, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tagging Indian actors

Lost, I'm not sure that I can stop you if you rev up the bot again, but I will remove tags when I see them. You can't call it vandalism; it's a content dispute. Or a process dispute.

I strongly object to the way that many Indian editors want to pigeonhole people. They want to label by nationality, religion, ethnicity, state of origin, and caste (varna and jati). Bakasuprman assured me, at one point, that just as fruit came in different varieties, so people came in different varieties. That's just plain wrong. Social scientists these days stress the mutability of identity. Identity is negotiated. An individual can claim or reject identities; a group can accept or reject claimants; outsiders can make their own classifications whether or not the individual and the group agree. Thus you have Nazis classifying people as Jews because they had one Jewish grandparent, even though neither the individual nor the Jewish community accepted that identification. Classification by outsiders is a precursor to communal riots, ethnic cleansing, many of the horrors of the 20th and 21st centuries.

I also strongly object to stamping articles with the Indian flag. It's like European colonialists planting the flag and saying "It's ours now." I see no point in it other than ego-gratification and the creation of mini-empires within WP. I see no proof that it has improved even one article. If the US and the UK editors aren't doing it, I don't think Indian editors should do it.

Sorry. You approached me politely, which I appreciate, but I can't approve of the enlistment of WP in the service of real-world national aggrandizement. I reject nationalism. It has killed millions. I know that I'm an oddball in rejecting such a widespread belief, but there it is. I hope that I'm just ahead of the times, and that eventually others will follow me. I tried resolving but he didnt respond. The main problem is that he's using a partisan book, but if I use a Marathi citation or Google books he flames me. His articles are nothing short of advertisements of his loyalaties. He gets enraged even if i place more sources tag. I have myself solved the problem of Yadavas of devagiri by adding many citations and crediting his author as well. I hope he doesnt create any problems now. It will be nice if u ask him to stop removing cited content. Is it fair to remove cited info if u dnt agree with the author's views. Even I dont think his citations are good,so am I allowed to delete it? Vishu123 12:04, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vishu123 harrassment

Sir, this person Vishu123 has been adviced by admin user:blnguyen that his snippets and marathi citations are not useful on English wikipedia, nor do they convey the full context of the authors intended meaning. Admin user:utcursch has also adviced this puppemaster (of god knows how many socck puppets though he proudly accepts two) that his marathi language self translations are secondary to English language books on English wikipedia but he is too "thick" to understand this. You are right, only third party resolution may seem to be a solution but this has not worked in the case of this person who has shown utter disregard for it in the past. The Seuna article is one example. Admin user:utcursch, acting as third party, constructed this article using all English language sources on hand, which Vishu123 promply went on to vandalise. His main goal is to remove all Kannada/Karnataka references in the article which has come from valid sources. He calls my English language authors "fanatics". He has created so many sock puppets, its really hard to decide which version of him did what. He is trying to tire down admins and fellow users who now keep away from his issues making it easier for him to make his own rules. He has been blocked/banned so many times that even admins dont know how to deal with this person anymore. We are not dealing with an ordinary wikipedian here nor is he as new to wikipedia as he claims. He has been around for over 6 months. thanks.Dineshkannambadi 13:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

First of all all that Mr.Kannambadi says about Mr.Bl and Utcursch is totally false. He wants to comfort himself by assuming their support. U r free to look for their so-called support. I have proved that Google books are allowed here.

I have made this id because my earlier id was blocked because of his conspirancy. The citation he uses are though in english language are extremely fanatic and unreliable. I dont have anything agaisnt Karnataka if doesnt bring it to irrelavant topics like yadavas who have nothing to do with it. He is fidgeting because i encountered his lies with my citations. Image:Alfred-Ford.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Alfred-Ford.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 02:15, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unleashing bot on individuals

Lost, I haven't changed my mind, I've just been busy.

I don't think a template re a government belongs on individuals involved in the film world. They have nothing to do with the government. They work in films that are shown all over the world. They film all over the world. They hold Indian nationality in most cases, but that's not necessarily so. I don't see why the bot should be grabbing for the government of India anything remotely associated with India. That's like saying that nationality is the main attribute of people and things.

I don't think assessment should be linked to the projects. I don't think the templates should be on the talk page. I don't think projects should be recruiting on talk pages. I don't think a couple of people should be asserting their control of thousands of articles and spamming them with project ads.

It's just me and I can't stop you. I can just hate and loathe the whole thing and remove templates when I see them. I hate ads, I hate spam, I hate templates. I think more people are going to be feeling this way, as the templates crowd the tops of talk pages and it gets harder and harder to actually USE the talk pages. WP:ADOPT

Hi there,

As a user looking to Adopt with the Adopt-a-User program, there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention, as well as request help with the backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

You should know that the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking. Once adoption is complete please use the templates found here on the Adoptee's and your user page.

Also numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Furthermore a new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you have and if you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

So I hope you get adopting soon - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 15:19, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2007

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

Thanks for response. I was truing to break free to report this nonstop vandal but wanted to get appropriate warnings and reverts into place first. Last time I reported a vandal, no action was taken as the Admin who responded felt the warning s needed to be used first so I make sure warnings are documented before I report a vandal. Cheers, HJ 14:37, 5 February 2007 (UTC) The only reason I post the acts is when I see and act of vandalism and note that another editor caught it and never checked to see if the vandal was in process of a series of acts. I have found that the vandal as well sees that we can pull all their pranks and even had one apologize yesterday after I posted all his acts. I throw in the "admin" comment so vandal realizes that there are people watching their activity. Too many of these pranksters are repeat violaters and come back for more and only get a mild warning. I'm just trying to build a case against the more prevelant and crude pranksters. Cheers, HJ 15:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vandal or clumsy editor?

This is third day of seeing either vandalism or clumsy editing on carrier related articles from now 3 different similar IP addresses. The latest being User talk:144.139.59.173. Only one or two edits seem to be genuine, the rest remove the same images over and over. I have tried to follow this activity and summarize the activity with warnings on the successive talk pages, but have gotten no response from whomever is doing it. If the person involved is moving to different computers, then the warnings may not be seen before he moves on. This is getting old to say the least and I'm not sure how to address it as it is being repeated daily. It seesm somone is trying to contribute, but doing more damage than actually adding content.
