Hi, RachelSummers77, welcome to WikiProject LGBT Studies! We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles of interest to the LGBT community. Some points that may be helpful: Our main aim is to help improve LGBT-related articles, so if someone asks for help with an article, please try your hardest to help them if you are able. Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it. The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, peer review and a project-wide article collaboration, all of which you are welcome to take part in. We also have a unique program to improve our lower quality articles, Jumpaclass, so please consider signing up there. If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to our translation section, to help us improve our foreign LGBT topics. If you're planning to stay, have a square in our quilt! You can put anything you want in it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you. Girl Genius

Generally, I understand the rule of thumb is that we minimize the number of external links to the subject's own website(s): one to the subject, maybe one to the "parent company"; that's about it. We are not here to provide a directory of links and websites, not even official ones. simon amstell

there seems to be a major misunderstanding on the simon amstell page. his sexual orientation and jewishness do not feature prominently in his stand up. his current touring show, which i have seen, is called 'no self'. he does not make any gay or jewish jokes. in fact the theme is the illusion of identity, that such labels are absurd. if he was also making jewish or gay jokes as is currently suggested, the actual show title and content would not make sense. to go by reviews is not an accurate enough source. reviewers always put artists in easily understandable boxes. surely we can attempt a better, more accurate understanding here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.129.130.172 (talk) 10:51, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

re Amstell page

But do you have any verifiable sources? Otherwise, what you are doing is "original research": Wikipedia is not the place to publish your own opinions, experiences, or arguments. Anyone can claim that the subject of a particular article does such-and-such or believes such-and-such, but these claims must be backed up and properly cited. Also, we've come up with quite a few sources that demonstrate that his religion and sexuality _do_ seem to figure into his work. Whereas, you're the only person claiming that his show is more about Buddhism than anything else, and have not come up with any sources to prove this (specifically, to prove that his show is about Buddhism but _not_ at all about his growing up Jewish or being gay). The burden of proof is upon you.

I have to ask--do you have a problem with his religion or sexuality even being mentioned? Because if that's the case, you should also be aware that Wikipedia is not the place for censorship. And Amstell is very open about himself and these things do come up in his work on Never Mind The Buzzcock and other places--his religion/sexuality may not be mentioned in each and every piece of work he does, but there is enough of a trend for the current article to be accurate. I'm changing the wording from "stand-up material" to "work" so that it's more general, though.

Finally--the page has a long history of people trying to remove any and all mentions of his religion and sexuality, particularly the latter. At first it was "oh, he _happens_ to be gay, but it's nothing to do with his career". Then we found sources proving otherwise, and rather than come up with something that directly challenges that, people just removed the cited information (another big no-no). If you wish to contest material, you must do so by the rules--otherwise, it looks like you're simply trying to remove content which you find objectionable because of your personal beliefs, not because it's factually untrue. And this is one of the best ways to get banned from editing Wikipedia. Rachel Summers (talk) 16:50, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

this is a recent review of SA's stand is... his religion and sexuality are not featured prominently. citing an episode of buzzcocks where he and john barrowman make humour from their sexuality and one or two moments of 5 years of popworld shows does not justify 'prominently'

this type of sentence makes him sound like a gay jewish comedian like other more old fashioned comedians who base most of their act around their ethnicity/background/gender etc. in fact amstell's most recent stand up show was called 'no self' and was about a failed relationship and experiencing existential angst, as the above review shows.

i am not posting this because of personal opnions/beliefs... certainly not homophobia. i am gay myself. i just think the statement is entirely at odds with the person he actually is - someone who has been praised (as above review) for doing something far more thoughtful and intelligent than one note jokes about being part of a minority.
